Uncertainty quantification in MELCOR Safety analysis of ARIES reactor designs

MELCOR-TMAP is a combined thermal-hydraulics and tritium tracking code developed to simulate severe accident scenarios in fission and fusion power plants. Here, we demonstrate the results of MELCOR-TMAP analyses on historical ARIES program reference designs. By coupling MELCOR-TMAP with the open source RAVEN probabilistic risk analysis framework’s Bayesian UQ capabilities, we also demonstrate key uncertainties in material properties with the highest impact on tritium inventory and plant risk.

Commissioning of the Advanced Rare Isotope Separator ARIS at FRIB

The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University (MSU) consists of a newly constructed linear accelerator and fragment separator that are designed for enhanced production rates of rare isotopes for use in research and other societal applications. Recent activities through to August 2022 took place to commission the Advanced Rare Isotope Separator (ARIS) and carry out the first experiments. This followed commissioning of the newly constructed linac that is designed to provide orders of magnitude higher beam power than the previously coupled cyclotrons. This required that more advanced target, beam dump, and collimation systems of the new separator be designed and constructed to sustain unprecedented conditions by heavy ion beams. Commissioning with ~1 kW beams began recently and results from activities that began in late 2021 are reported here. Comparisons between the previous and current facilities are provided.

ARIES Network Requirements Review

The Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) is the high-performance network user facility for the US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC) and delivers highly reliable data transport capabilities optimized for the requirements of data-intensive science. In essence, ESnet is the circulatory system that enables the DOE science mission by connecting all of its laboratories and facilities in the US and abroad. ESnet is funded and stewarded by the Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) program and managed and operated by the Scientific Networking Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). ESnet is widely regarded as a global leader in the research and education networking community. On May 1, 2021, ESnet and the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), organized an ESnet requirements review of the ARIES (Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems) platform. Preparation for this event included identification of key stakeholders to the process: program and facility management, research groups, technology providers, and a number of external observers. These individuals were asked to prepare formal case study documents in order to build a complete understanding of the current, near-term, and long-term status, expectations, and processes that will support the science going forward.

ARIES / Flatirons Facility - Hydrogen System Capability Buildout

Under the "Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems" (ARIES) initiative, hydrogen system capabilities including a MW-scale electrolyzer, storage system, and MW-scale fuel cell generator will be designed and commissioned at NREL's Flatirons Campus. This hydrogen infrastructure will support H2@Scale goals by enabling integrated systems R&D to study the science of scaling for hydrogen energy systems. The system is designed with flexibility to provide a testbed to demonstrate systems integration, grid services, energy storage, direct renewable hydrogen production, and innovative end use applications (e.g. HD transportation, natural gas blending, etc.).

Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems (ARIES) Cyber Range Overview and Threat-to-Consequence Demonstration

This presentation was presented at the Aggregation and Grid Security Workshop - held on June 17-18, 2025, at NREL in Golden, Colorado. The goal of the two-day workshop was to address the critical cybersecurity challenges for the future electric grid. The threat-to-consequence demonstration showcases NREL's capability to model, simulate, test, and evaluate cyberattacks targeting energy systems that coincide with natural hazards, as well as the ramifications for the energy grid as a whole.
