Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in samples of Ryugu formed in the interstellar medium

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contain ≲20% of the carbon in the interstellar medium. They are potentially produced in circumstellar environments (at temperatures ≳1000 kelvin), by (~10 kelvin) interstellar clouds, or by processing of carbon-rich dust grains. We report isotopic properties of PAHs extracted from samples of the asteroid Ryugu and the meteorite Murchison. The doubly- 13 C substituted compositions (Δ2× 13 C values) of the PAHs naphthalene, fluoranthene, and pyrene are 9 to 51‰ higher than values expected for a stochastic distribution of isotopes. The Δ2× 13 C values are higher than expected if the PAHs formed in a circumstellar environment, but consistent with formation in the interstellar medium. By contrast, the PAHs phenanthrene and anthracene in Ryugu samples have Δ2× 13 C values consistent with formation by higher-temperature reactions.

The Psyche Gamma-Ray and Neutron Spectrometer

A Gamma-Ray and Neutron Spectrometer (GRNS) instrument has been developed as part of the science payload for NASA’s Discovery Program Psyche mission to the M-class asteroid (16) Psyche. The GRNS instrument is designed to measure the elemental composition of Psyche with the goal to understand the origin of this mysterious, potentially metal-rich planetary body. The GRNS will measure the near-surface abundances for the elements Ni, Fe, Si, K, S, Al, and Ca, as well as the spatial distribution of Psyche’s metal-to-silicate fraction (or metal fraction). These measurements address three of the five Psyche mission science objectives: determine if Psyche is a core; determine whether small metal bodies incorporate light elements into the metal phase; and determine whether Psyche was formed under reducing conditions. The Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (GRS) uses a cryocooled, high-purity Ge (HPGe) sensor to detect cosmic-ray generated gamma rays in the 60 to 9000-keV energy range. The HPGe sensor is surrounded by a borated plastic anticoincidence shield that provides three functions: active background rejection from charged particle interactions in the HPGe sensor; fast neutron measurements; and direct measurements of the incident galactic cosmic ray flux. The Neutron Spectrometer (NS) uses three 3 He gas proportional sensors, each with different material wraps to measure thermal (<0.4 eV), low-energy epithermal (0.4 eV to 1 keV), and high-energy epithermal (up to 100 keV) neutrons. This paper provides an overview of the Psyche GRNS, including: its science and measurement objectives; the design of the instrument hardware, software, and operation; pre-launch performance measurements and its initial performance in space; and an overview of its data products and expected operation for different Psyche mission phases.

Nitrogen- and oxygen-rich organic material indicative of polymerization in pre-aqueous cryochemistry on Bennu’s parent body

Nitrogen-containing organic compounds play key biological roles, and their identification in primitive astromaterials such as meteorites can shed light on the origin of life. However, meteorites are typically contaminated by uncontrolled exposure to Earth. Here we show that pristine samples returned from asteroid Bennu contain polymeric organics exceptionally rich in nitrogen and oxygen. These polymers contain a variety of functional groups including amines, amides, N-heterocycles, and aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, among others. They are seen in a carbonaceous vein with mineral inclusions and in multilayered organic sheets. Their morphology and composition indicate formation from pre-aqueous N-rich precursors and later modification during aqueous alteration. These findings demonstrate that asteroids like Bennu contain complex nitrogen-rich organic phases formed by pre-aqueous and aqueous processes, and they expand the known inventory of potential prebiotic extraterrestrial compounds.

Secondary corundum‐bearing assemblages in Allende Ca,Al‐rich inclusions: Mineralogy, petrology, oxygen, and aluminum–magnesium isotope systematics

Here, we report on the mineralogy, petrology, oxygen, and aluminum–magnesium isotopic systematics of the secondary corundum-bearing assemblages in type B CAIs 3529Z and 3529G and fluffy type A (FTA) CAI ALH-2 from Allende (CV > 3.6). In 3529Z and 3529G, 2–5 μm-sized euhedral-to-subhedral corundum grains associate with secondary alumoåkermanite [(Ca,Na) 2 AlSi 2 O 7 ], grossular, spinel, grossite, celsian, kushiroite, and wadalite. In ALH-2, 2–5 μm-sized euhedral-to-subhedral corundum grains associate with secondary grossular, nepheline, spinel, and kushiroite. In 3529Z and 3529G, corundum and associated secondary grossite, spinel, alumoåkermanite, grossular, and kushiroite have similar 16 O-poor compositions (Δ 17 O = −2.2 ± 1.5‰); primary spinel is 16 O-rich (Δ 17 O ~ −23‰); Al,Ti-diopside shows a range of Δ 17 O (from ~ −24‰ to ~ −15‰); anorthite and melilite are 16 O-depleted to various degrees (−6.5‰ ≤ Δ 17 O ≤ −4.5‰ and Δ 17 O = −2.7 ± 0.8‰, respectively). In ALH-2, corundum shows a range of Δ 17 O, from ~ −9‰ to ~ −1‰; primary hibonite and spinel are 16 O-rich (Δ 17 O ~ −23‰); melilite and perovskite are 16 O-poor (Δ 17 O = −2.6 ± 1.5‰ and −3.1 ± 1.3‰, respectively). On the Al-Mg isotope diagram ( 26 Mg* versus 27 Al/ 24 Mg), primary Al,Ti-diopside, hibonite, melilite, and spinel in the Allende CAIs studied along the canonical isochron with inferred initial 26 Al/ 27 Al ratio [( 26 Al/ 27 Al) 0 ] of ~5 × 10 −5 . All secondary minerals have resolved excesses of 26 Mg*: alumoåkermanite, corundum, and grossite plot below the canonical isochron, whereas most spinel analyses plot above it. An internal isochron defined by the coexisting secondary corundum and alumoåkermanite in 3529Z has ( 26 Al/ 27 Al) 0 = (7.5 ± 2.6) × 10 −7 . We conclude that the corundum-bearing assemblages in Allende CAIs resulted from metasomatic alteration of primary melilite and anorthite, ~4–5 Ma after their crystallization. Metasomatic alteration of CAIs in the Allende parent asteroid by an aqueous fluid having Δ 17 O of ~ −3 ± 2‰ modified the O-isotope composition of their primary melilite, anorthite, and Ti-rich pyroxene; O-isotope compositions of primary hibonite, spinel, and low-Ti pyroxene escaped this modification.

Spectroscopy of the Hamburg Meteorite, Michigan H4

Spectroscopic studies of the Hamburg (Michigan H4) meteorite using visible–near-infrared (VNIR), mid-infrared (MIR), Raman, and Mössbauer data reproduce the results of more conventional laboratory measurements of petrology and geochemistry. This combination provides general information on the mineral modes of silicates, although spectroscopy was performed on different splits of this meteorite, and varying results may be explained by heterogeneity that is typical of ordinary chondrites. Raman also detects small features assigned to first-order D and G carbon bands, while Mössbauer data show the presence of Fe oxides and carbides. The electron microprobe (EMPA) composition of olivine in this meteorite is accurately measured to be Fo 81.3 , while MIR and Raman closely agree with Fo 80 and Fo 82 , respectively, and Mössbauer, at Fo 60 − Fo 70 , is in the ballpark. Similarly, P. R. Heck et al. report pyroxenes with compositions of Fs 16 Wo 1 , while Raman suggests a somewhat similar composition of Fs 28 Wo 0 . Both VNIR and MIR detect the presence of small amounts of feldspar, while EMPA identifies its composition as An 14 Ab 8 Or 5 . VNIR data were matched to spectral libraries of meteorite and asteroid data and shown to closely match other L and H meteorites. The best spectral matches to the Michigan H4 meteorite are to asteroid classes L/H/LL/URE, EH/EL/AUB, and CO/CV from M. D. Dyar et al.; objects in this group are intermediate in semimajor axis lengths for their orbits. The results highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each technique and show their collective strength when applied together to a single meteorite sample.

Oxygen isotope evidence from Ryugu samples for early water delivery to Earth by CI chondrites

The delivery of water to the inner Solar System, including Earth, is still a debated topic. A preferential role for hydrated asteroids in this process is supported by isotopic measurements. Carbonaceous chondrite (CC) meteorites represent our main source of information about these volatile-rich asteroids. However, the destruction of weaker materials during atmospheric entry creates a bias in our CC data. The return of surface materials from the C-type asteroid 162173 Ryugu by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft provides a unique opportunity to study high-porosity, low-density, primitive materials, unrepresented in the meteorite record. We measured the bulk oxygen isotope composition from four Ryugu particles and show that they most closely resemble the rare CI (CC Ivuna-type) chondrites, but with some differences that we attribute to the terrestrial contamination of the CI meteorites. We suggest that CI-related material is widespread among carbonaceous asteroids and a more important source of Earth’s water and other volatiles than its limited presence in our meteoritic collection indicates.

A dehydrated space-weathered skin cloaking the hydrated interior of Ryugu

Abstract Without a protective atmosphere, space-exposed surfaces of airless Solar System bodies gradually experience an alteration in composition, structure and optical properties through a collective process called space weathering. The return of samples from near-Earth asteroid (162173) Ryugu by Hayabusa2 provides the first opportunity for laboratory study of space-weathering signatures on the most abundant type of inner solar system body: a C-type asteroid, composed of materials largely unchanged since the formation of the Solar System. Weathered Ryugu grains show areas of surface amorphization and partial melting of phyllosilicates, in which reduction from Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ and dehydration developed. Space weathering probably contributed to dehydration by dehydroxylation of Ryugu surface phyllosilicates that had already lost interlayer water molecules and to weakening of the 2.7 µm hydroxyl (–OH) band in reflectance spectra. For C-type asteroids in general, this indicates that a weak 2.7 µm band can signify space-weathering-induced surface dehydration, rather than bulk volatile loss.

Solar wind contributions to Earth’s oceans

The isotopic composition of water in Earth’s oceans is challenging to recreate using a plausible mixture of known extraterrestrial sources such as asteroids—an additional isotopically light reservoir is required. The Sun’s solar wind could provide an answer to balance Earth’s water budget. Here, we used atom probe tomography to directly observe an average ~1 mol% enrichment in water and hydroxyls in the solar-wind-irradiated rim of an olivine grain from the S-type asteroid Itokawa. We also experimentally confirm that H + irradiation of silicate mineral surfaces produces water molecules. These results suggest that the Itokawa regolith could contain ~20 l m -3 of solar-wind-derived water and that such water reservoirs are probably ubiquitous on airless worlds throughout our Galaxy. The production of this isotopically light water reservoir by solar wind implantation into fine-grained silicates may have been a particularly important process in the early Solar System, potentially providing a means to recreate Earth’s current water isotope ratios.

A Deep and Wide Twilight Survey for Asteroids Interior to Earth and Venus

We are conducting a survey using twilight time on the Dark Energy Camera with the Blanco 4 m telescope in Chile to look for objects interior to Earth's and Venus' orbits. To date we have discovered two rare Atira/Apohele asteroids, 2021 LJ4 and 2021 PH27, which have orbits completely interior to Earth's orbit. We also discovered one new Apollo-type Near Earth Object (NEO) that crosses Earth's orbit, 2022 AP7. Two of the discoveries have diameters ≳1 km. 2022 AP7 is likely the largest Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA) discovered in about eight years. To date we have covered 624 square degrees of sky near to and interior to the orbit of Venus. The average images go to 21.3 mag in the r band, with the best images near 22nd mag. Our new discovery 2021 PH27 has the smallest semimajor axis known for an asteroid, 0.4617 au, and the largest general relativistic effects (53 arcsec/century) known for any body in the solar system. The survey has detected ~15% of all known Atira NEOs. We put strong constraints on any stable population of Venus co-orbital resonance objects existing, as well as the Atira and Vatira asteroid classes. These interior asteroid populations are important to complete the census of asteroids near Earth, including some of the most likely Earth impactors that cannot easily be discovered in other surveys. Comparing the actual population of asteroids found interior to Earth and Venus with those predicted to exist by extrapolating from the known population exterior to Earth is important to better understand the origin, composition, and structure of the NEO population.

Variations of organic functional chemistry in carbonaceous matter from the asteroid 162173 Ryugu

Abstract Primordial carbon delivered to the early earth by asteroids and meteorites provided a diverse source of extraterrestrial organics from pre-existing simple organic compounds, complex solar-irradiated macromolecules, and macromolecules from extended hydrothermal processing. Surface regolith collected by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft from the carbon-rich asteroid 162173 Ryugu present a unique opportunity to untangle the sources and processing history of carbonaceous matter. Here we show carbonaceous grains in Ryugu can be classified into three main populations defined by spectral shape: Highly aromatic (HA), Alkyl-Aromatic (AA), and IOM-like (IL). These carbon populations may be related to primordial chemistry, since C and N isotopic compositions vary between the three groups. Diffuse carbon is occasionally dominated by molecular carbonate preferentially associated with coarse-grained phyllosilicate minerals. Compared to related carbonaceous meteorites, the greater diversity of organic functional chemistry in Ryugu indicate the pristine condition of these asteroid samples.

Reassessing the proposed “CY chondrites”: Evidence for multiple meteorite types and parent bodies from Cr-Ti-H-C-N isotopes and bulk elemental compositions

Here, we report a coordinated bulk Cr-Ti-H-C-N isotopic and compositional study of six carbonaceous chondrites from Antarctica that are often considered to be related and termed Yamato-like carbonaceous (CY) chondrites. These meteorites are known to have undergone extensive aqueous alteration followed by different degrees of thermal alteration, to be similar to one another in regard to mineralogy, and share affinities with both the Ivuna-like carbonaceous (CI) and Mighei-like carbonaceous (CM) chondrites. While mineralogically similar, a key difference among these samples is that chondrules have been found in some of these samples, but not in others. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship of these meteorites to one another, and investigate how they relate to the CI and CM chondrite groups. We find that with the addition of the isotopic compositions of these ‘CY’ chondrites, there is now a continuum of isotopic compositions among the carbonaceous chondrites. The CI chondrites are no longer separate in O isotopic compositions from the other carbonaceous chondrite groups in plots of Cr-O and Ti-O. We also find that the ‘CY’ chondrites represent two distinct populations, which correlate with their heating stage. However, the peak temperatures experienced by each population can only explain the differences in H and C isotopes and abundances and N abundances between samples, and cannot have caused the differences in N, Cr, and Ti isotopes, or all the volatile element depletions of the sample’s bulk compositions. Instead, we conclude that the compositional and isotopic data of these two populations correlate with their known chondrule abundances, indicating distinct precursors for each population. We find it most likely that these samples originate from two distinct asteroids, implying that among the six samples studied here, there are not five related samples to constitute a new meteorite group. The chondrule-free heating Stage III samples are most likely heated CI chondrites, while the chondrule-bearing heating Stage IV samples could be heated CM chondrites.

The Non-carbonaceous–Carbonaceous Meteorite Dichotomy

The isotopic dichotomy between non-carbonaceous (NC) and carbonaceous (CC) meteorites indicates that meteorite parent bodies derive from two genetically distinct reservoirs, which presumably were located inside (NC) and outside (CC) the orbit of Jupiter and remained isolated from each other for the first few million years of the solar system. Here we review the discovery of the NC–CC dichotomy and its implications for understanding the early history of the solar system, including the formation of Jupiter, the dynamics of terrestrial planet formation, and the origin and nature of Earth’s building blocks. The isotopic difference between the NC and CC reservoirs is probably inherited from the solar system’s parental molecular cloud and has been maintained through the rapid formation of Jupiter that prevented significant exchange of material from inside (NC) and outside (CC) its orbit. The growth and/or migration of Jupiter resulted in inward scattering of CC bodies, which accounts for the co-occurrence of NC and CC bodies in the present-day asteroid belt and the delivery of presumably volatile-rich CC bodies to the growing terrestrial planets. Earth’s primitive mantle, at least for siderophile elements like Mo, has a mixed NC–CC composition, indicating that Earth accreted CC bodies during the final stages of its growth, perhaps through the Moon-forming giant impactor. The late-stage accretion of CC bodies to Earth is sufficient to account for the entire budget of Earth’s water and highly volatile species.

Non-traditional stable isotope measurements using laser desorption Orbitrap mass spectrometry: Implications for planetary missions.

Isotopic fractionation recorded in planetary materials provides insights into physical, chemical, and/or potential biological processes occurring on Solar System bodies. As we enter into the next decades of planetary exploration, the crucial information revealed by isotopic compositions of rocky and icy samples mandates that next generation spaceflight instrumentation possess the capability to measure isotope ratios in situ with sufficient precision/accuracy to distinguish between such processes. Here, in addition to identifying and fingerprinting complex organic materials with high accuracy and ultrahigh mass resolutions, laser desorption Orbitrap™ mass spectrometry (LD-O-MS) has the capability to determine the elemental and isotopic composition of solid planetary materials such as rock, regolith, organics, ice, etc. Here, we use a space-qualified LD-O-MS instrument comprising a 266 nm ultraviolet (UV) laser and Orbitrap mass analyzer ruggedized for planetary applications to investigate the stable isotopic composition of Ti and Zn metal plates. Based on the isotopic analyses, we constrain the performance of the CORALS instrument to sub per mille (‰) level accuracy and precision for Ti and at the per mille (‰) level for Zn. An LD-O-MS instrument is a versatile instrument capable of measuring isotopic composition of a variety of planetary samples and would constitute a critical instrument in the exploration of various planetary bodies including but not limited to Moon, Mars, Enceladus and other ocean or icy worlds, Ceres and other asteroids, and comets, thereby answering several high-priority questions pertaining to the formation and evolution of our Solar System.

Chemistry in Retrieved Ryugu Asteroid Samples Revealed by Non-Invasive X-ray Microanalyses: Pink-Beam Fluorescence CT and Tender-Energy Absorption Spectroscopy

The Hayabusa2 space mission recently retrieved 5.4 g of material from asteroid Ryugu, providing the first direct access to pristine material from a carbonaceous asteroid. This study employs a novel combination of non-invasive synchrotron X-ray techniques to examine microscale chemistry (elemental distributions and element-specific chemical speciation and local structure) inside Ryugu grains without physically cutting the samples. Manganese primarily occurs in carbonate: Mn-bearing dolomite with minor earlier ankerite. Iron sulfides present as large single grains and as smaller particles in the finer-grained matrix are both predominantly pyrrhotite. At the 5 μm scale, Fe sulfides do not show the mineralogical heterogeneity seen in many carbonaceous meteorites but exhibit some heterogeneous localized oxidation. Iron is present often as intergrowths of oxide and sulfide, indicating incomplete replacement. Trace selenium substitutes for S in pyrrhotite. Copper is present as Fe-poor Cu sulfide. These results demonstrate multiple episodes of fluid alteration on the parent body, including partial oxidation, and help constrain the sequence or evolution of fluids and processes that resulted in the current grain-scale mineralogical composition of Ryugu materials.

Nonequilibrium spherulitic magnetite in the Ryugu samples

Here, we have investigated several particles collected during each of two touchdowns of the Hayabusa2 spacecraft at the surface of the C-type asteroid 162173 Ryugu using various electron microscope techniques. Our detailed transmission electron microscopy study shows the presence of magnetite with various morphologies coexisting in close proximity. This is characteristic of CI chondrite-like materials and consistent with the mineral assemblages and compositions in the Ryugu parent body. We describe the microstructural characteristics of magnetite with different morphologies, which could have resulted from the chemical conditions (growth vs. diffusion rate) during their formation. Furthermore, we describe the presence of magnetites with a spherulitic structure composed of individual radiating fibers that are characterized by pervasive, homogeneously distributed euhedral to subhedral pores that have not been described in previous chondrite studies. This particular spherulitic structure is consistent with crystallization under nonequilibrium conditions. Additionally, the presence of a high density of defects within the magnetite fibers, the high surface/volume ratio of this morphology, and the presence of amorphous materials in several pores and at the edges of the acicular fibers further support their formation under nonequilibrium conditions. We suggest that the growth processes that lead to this structure result from the solution reaching a supersaturated state, resulting in an adjustment to a lower free energy condition via nucleation and rapid growth.

The formation and structure of iron-dominated planetesimals

Metal-rich asteroids and iron meteorites are considered core remnants of differentiated planetesimals and/or products of oxygen-depleted accretion. Investigating the origins of iron-rich planetesimals could provide key insights into planet formation mechanisms. Using differentiation models, we evaluate the interior structure and composition of representative-sized planetesimals (~200 km diameter), while varying oxygen fugacity and initial bulk meteoritic composition. Under the oxygen-poor conditions that likely existed early in the inner regions of the Solar System and other protoplanetary disks, core fractions remain relatively consistent across a range of bulk compositions (CI, H, EH, and CBa). Some of these cores could incorporate significant amounts of silicon (10–30 weight%) and explain the metal fractions of Fe-rich bodies in the absence of mantle stripping. Conversely, planetesimals forming under more oxidizing conditions, such as beyond snow lines, could exhibit smaller cores, enriched in carbon, sulfur (>1 wt%), and oxides. Sulfur-rich cores, like those formed from EH and H bulk compositions, could remain partly molten, sustain dynamos, and even drive sulfur-rich volcanism. Additionally, bodies with high carbon contents, such as CI compositions, can form graphitic outer layers. These variations highlight the importance of initial formation conditions in shaping planetesimal structures. Future missions, such as NASA’s Psyche mission, offer an opportunity to measure the relative abundances of key elements (Fe, Ni, Si, and S) necessary to distinguish among formation scenarios and structure models for Fe-rich and reduced planetesimals.

Ryugu's nucleosynthetic heritage from the outskirts of the Solar System

Little is known about the origin of the spectral diversity of asteroids and what it says about conditions in the protoplanetary disk. Here we show that samples returned from Cbtype asteroid Ryugu have Fe isotopic anomalies indistinguishable from Ivunatype (CI) chondrites, which are distinct from all other carbonaceous chondrites. Iron isotopes, therefore, demonstrate that Ryugu and CI chondrites formed in a reservoir that was different from the source regions of other carbonaceous asteroids. Growth and migration of the giant planets destabilized nearby planetesimals and ejected some inwards to be implanted into the Main Belt. In this framework, most carbonaceous chondrites may have originated from regions around the birthplaces of Jupiter and Saturn, while the distinct isotopic composition of CI chondrites and Ryugu may reflect their formation further away in the disk, owing their presence in the inner Solar System to excitation by Uranus and Neptune
