Comments on the entanglement spectrum of de Sitter space

We argue that the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole entropy formula does not imply that the entanglement spectrum of the vacuum density matrix of de Sitter space is flat. Specifically, we show that the expectation value of a random projection operator of dimension d >> 1, on a Hilbert space of dimension D >> d and in a density matrix ρ = e –K with strictly positive spectrum, is $\frac{d}{D} \large{(}1 + o \large{(}\frac{1}{\sqrt{d}}\large{)}$, independent of the spectrum of the density matrix. In addition, for a suitable class of spectra the asymptotic estimates Tr (ρK) ~ ln D – o(1) and Tr [ρ(K – $\langle$K$\rangle$) 2 ] = a $\langle$K$\rangle$ are compatible for any order one constant a. We discuss a simple family of matrix models and projections that can replicate such modular Hamiltonians and the SdS entropy formula.

Fluctuations in the entropy of Hawking radiation

We use the gravitational path integral (GPI) to compute the fluctuations of the Hawking radiation entropy around the Page curve in a two-dimensional model introduced by Penington Before the Page time, we find that δ S = e − S / 2 , where S is the black hole entropy. This result agrees with the Haar-averaged entropy fluctuations in a bipartite system. After the Page time, we find that δ S ∼ e − S , up to a prefactor that depends logarithmically on the width of the microcanonical energy window. This is not symmetric under exchange of subsystem sizes and so does not agree with the Haar average for a subsystem of fixed Hilbert space dimension. The discrepancy can be attributed to the fact that the black hole Hilbert space dimension is not fixed by the state preparation: even in a microcanonical ensemble with a top-hat smearing function, the GPI yields an additive fluctuation in the number of black hole states. This result, and the fact that the Page curve computed by the GPI is smooth, all point towards an ensemble interpretation of the GPI. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Microstate counting via Bethe Ansätze in the 4d $ \mathcal{N} $ = 1 superconformal index

We study the superconfomal index of four-dimensional toric quiver gauge theories using a Bethe Ansatz approach recently applied by Benini and Milan. Relying on a particular set of solutions to the corresponding Bethe Ansatz equations we evaluate the superconformal index in the large N limit, thus avoiding to take any Cardy-like limit. We present explicit results for theories arising as a stack of N D 3 branes at the tip of toric Calabi-Yau cones: the conifold theory, the suspended pinch point gauge theory, the first del Pezzo theory and Y p,q quiver gauge theories. For a suitable choice of the chemical potentials of the theory we find agreement with predictions made for the same theories in the Cardy-like limit. However, for other regions of the domain of chemical potentials the superconformal index is modified and consequently the associated black hole entropy receives corrections. We work out explicitly the simple case of the conifold theory.

Logarithmic corrections to the entropy of rotating black holes and black strings in AdS 5

We investigate logarithmic corrections to the entropy of supersymmetric, rotating, asymptotically AdS 5 black holes and black strings. Within the framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence, the entropy of these black objects is determined, on the field theory side, by the superconformal index and the refined topologically twisted index of $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, respectively. We read off the logarithmic correction from those field-theoretic partition functions. On the gravity side, we take the near-horizon limit and apply the Kerr/CFT correspondence whose associated charged Cardy formula describes the degeneracy of states at subleading order and determines the logarithmic correction to the entropy. We find perfect agreement between these two approaches. Our results provide a window into precision microstate counting and demonstrate the efficacy of low-energy, symmetry-based approaches such as the Kerr/CFT correspondence for asymptotically AdS black objects under certain conditions.

Probing supersymmetric black holes with surface defects

It has long been conjectured that the large N deconfinement phase transition of $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SU(N) super-Yang-Mills corresponds via AdS/CFT to the Hawking-Page transition in which black holes dominate the thermal ensemble, and quantitative evidence of this has come through the recent matching of the superconformal index of $\frac{1}{16}$-BPS states to the supersymmetric black hole entropy. Here we introduce the half-BPS Gukov-Witten surface defect as a probe of the superconformal index, which also serves as an order parameter for the deconfinement transition. This can be studied directly in field theory as a modification of the usual unitary matrix model or in the dual description as a D3-brane probe in the background of a (complex) supersymmetric black hole. Using a saddle point approximation, we determine our defect index in the large N limit as a simple function of the chemical potentials and show independently that it is reproduced by the renormalized action of the brane in the black hole background. Along the way, we also comment on the Cardy limit and the thermodynamics of the D3-brane in the generalized ensemble. The defect index sharply distinguishes between the confining and the deconfining phases of the gauge theory and thus is a supersymmetric non-perturbative order parameter for these large N phase transitions which deserves further investigation. Finally, our work provides an example where the properties of a black hole coupled to an external system can be analyzed precisely.

On the BPS Sector in AdS 3 /CFT 2 Holography

Abstract The BPS sector in duality has been fertile ground for the exploration of gauge/gravity duality, from the match between black hole entropy and the CFT elliptic genus to the construction of large families of geometrical microstates and the identification of the corresponding states in the CFT. Worldsheet methods provide a tool to further explore the relation between string theory in the bulk and corresponding CFT quantities. We show how to match individual BPS strings to their counterparts in the symmetric product orbifold CFT. In the process, we find an exact match between known constructions of microstate geometries and condensates of BPS supergraviton strings, and discuss their role in the broader collection of BPS states. In particular, we explore how microstate geometries develop singularities; and how string theory resolves these singularities through the appearance of “tensionless” string dynamics, which is the continuation of structures found in the weak‐coupling CFT into the strongly coupled regime described by string theory in the bulk. We argue that such “tensionless” strings are responsible for black hole microstructure in the bulk description.

Microscopic Origin of the Entropy of Astrophysical Black Holes

We construct an infinite family of microstates for black holes in Minkowski spacetime which have effective semiclassical descriptions in terms of collapsing dust shells in the black hole interior. Quantum mechanical wormholes cause these states to have exponentially small, but universal, overlaps. We show that these overlaps imply that the microstates span a Hilbert space of log dimension equal to the event horizon area divided by four times the Newton constant, explaining the statistical origin of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. Universal entropy and hawking radiation of near-extremal AdS4 black holes

We compute the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of near-extremal asymptotically AdS 4 electrically charged rotating black holes using three different methods: (i) from the gravity solution, (ii) from the near-horizon Kerr/CFT correspondence and (iii) from the boundary conformal field theory. The results from these three different approaches match exactly, giving us a unique and universal expression for the entropy and the microstate counting of near-extremal AdS black holes via the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the second method, we extend the Kerr/CFT correspondence to the near-extremal case to compute the left and right central charges. We also use hidden conformal symmetry of the near-horizon geometry to compute the Frolov-Thorne temperatures. From the results of the near-extremal AdS 4 black hole entropy, we provide a microscopic foundation for Hawking radiation.

Toward a proof of entropy increase in the presence of quantum black holes

A sufficient condition for the quantum entropy to be nondecreasing under a trace-preserving positive linear map is that the 'totally random' state be stationary. It is argued that this condition will be satisfied by the quantum system consisting of the region external to one or more black holes. This would explain why a 'generalized second law of thermodynamics' appears to hold in the presence of black holes.

Bulk entropy is crucial to validate the second law of the extended black hole thermodynamics

The extended black hole thermodynamics in which the cosmological constant plays the role of pressure significantly enriches the phase structure of the theory. In order to understand the extended black hole thermodynamics more precisely, we let the value of the cosmological constant vary dynamically via tunneling from one vacuum to another in a black hole induced vacuum decay. In this process, entropy of the matter/energy released by a black hole is crucial to validate the second law of thermodynamics. In other words, without taking this bulk entropy into account, entropy associated with the black hole and cosmological horizons may not always increase. Since the bulk entropy is not represented by the black hole and the cosmological horizons, this result calls for a more careful interpretation of the holographic principle in which environmental effects are taken into account.

The superconformal index and black hole instabilities

The superconformal index of $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group U(N) has provided powerful insights into the entropy of supersymmetric black holes in AdS 5 × S 5 , including some sub-leading logarithmic and non-perturbative corrections. Recently, the phase space of supersymmetric solutions has been argued to contain configurations other than the asymptotically AdS 5 black hole. Such configurations include the so-called grey galaxies where the black hole at the center is surrounded by a gas of gravitons. By numerically evaluating the superconformal index of $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills at small values of N, we detect systematic deviations from the entropy of black holes with two distinct angular momenta. We find that the giant graviton expansion of the index is a numerically efficient way of evaluating the index that complements the direct character evaluation and allows for explicit access to N ≤ 15 with up to two giant gravitons in the expansion. We find it remarkable that a supersymmetric quantity in field theory, usually thought of as a rigid counting observable, indeed contains information about different phases in the space of supersymmetric solutions on the gravity side.

Islands in asymptotically flat 2D gravity

The large-$\textit{N}$ limit of asymptotically flat two-dimensional dilaton gravity coupled to $\textit{N}$ free matter fields provides a useful toy model for semiclassical black holes and the information paradox. Analyses of the asymptotic information flux as given by the entanglement entropy show that it follows the Hawking curve, indicating that information is destroyed in these models. Recently, motivated by developments in AdS/CFT, a semiclassical island rule for entropy has been proposed. We define and compute the island rule entropy for black hole formation and evaporation in the large-$\textit{N}$ RST model of dilaton gravity and show that, in contrast, it follows the unitary Page curve. The relation of these two observations, and interesting properties of the dilaton gravity island rule, are discussed.

Tunneling between Multiple Histories as a Solution to the Information Loss Paradox

The information loss paradox associated with black hole Hawking evaporation is an unresolved problem in modern theoretical physics. In a recent brief essay, we revisited the evolution of the black hole entanglement entropy via the Euclidean path integral (EPI) of the quantum state and allow for the branching of semi-classical histories along the Lorentzian evolution. We posited that there exist at least two histories that contribute to EPI, where one is an information-losing history, while the other is an information-preserving one. At early times, the former dominates EPI, while at the late times, the latter becomes dominant. By doing so, we recovered the essence of the Page curve, and thus, the unitarity, albeit with the turning point, i.e., the Page time, much shifted toward the late time. In this full-length paper, we fill in the details of our arguments and calculations to strengthen our notion. One implication of this modified Page curve is that the entropy bound may thus be violated. We comment on the similarity and difference between our approach and that of the replica wormholes and the islands’ conjectures.

The universality of black hole thermodynamics

The thermodynamic properties of black holes — temperature, entropy and radiation rates — are usually associated with the presence of a horizon. We argue that any extremely compact object (ECO) must have the same thermodynamic properties. Here, quantum fields just outside the surface of an ECO have a large negative Casimir energy similar to the Boulware vacuum of black holes. If the thermal radiation emanating from the ECO does not fill the near-surface region at the local Unruh temperature, then we find that no solution of gravity equations is possible. In string theory, black holes microstates are horizonless quantum objects called fuzzballs that are expected to have a surface ~l p outside r = 2⁢GM; thus the information puzzle is resolved while preserving the semiclassical thermodynamics of black holes.

Islands and Page curves in 4d from Type IIB

Variants of the black hole information paradox are studied in Type IIB string theory setups that realize four-dimensional gravity coupled to a bath. The setups are string theory versions of doubly-holographic Karch/Randall brane worlds, with black holes coupled to non-gravitating and gravitating baths. The 10d versions are based on fully backreacted solutions for configurations of D3, D5 and NS5 branes, and admit dual descriptions as N = 4 SYM on a half space and 3d $T$$^{σ}_{ρ}$ [SU(N)] SCFTs. Island contributions to the entanglement entropy of black hole radiation systems are identified through Ryu/Takayanagi surfaces and lead to Page curves. Analogs of the critical angles found in the Karch/Randall models are identified in 10d, as critical parameters in the brane configurations and dual field theories.

The price of curiosity: information recovery in de Sitter space

Recent works have revealed that quantum extremal islands can contribute to the fine-grained entropy of black hole radiation reproducing the unitary Page curve. In this paper, we use these results to assess if an observer in de Sitter space can decode information hidden behind their cosmological horizon. By computing the fine-grained entropy of the Gibbons-Hawking radiation in a region where gravity is weak we find that this is possible, but the observer’s curiosity comes at a price. At the same time the island appears, which happens much earlier than the Page time, a singularity forms which the observer will eventually hit. We arrive at this conclusion by studying de Sitter space in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. We emphasize the role of the observer collecting radiation, breaking the thermal equilibrium studied so far in the literature. By analytically solving for the backreacted geometry we show how an island appears in this out-of-equilibrium state.
