Auroral recombination of N and O - A possible source for emission in the gamma and delta bands of NO

Radiative recombination of N and O provides a significant source for auroral emission in the gamma and delta bands of NO with selective population of vibrational levels in the A 2 Sigma(+) and C 2 Pi states. This mechanism may account for emissions detected near 2150 A. Models are derived for the auroral ionosphere and include estimates for the concentrations of N and NO. The concentration of NO is estimated to have a value of about 100 million per cu cm near 140 km in an IBC III aurora. The corresponding density for N is about 50 million per cu cm, and the concentration ratio NO(+)/O2(+) has a value of about 5.5.

Quantitative absorption and fluorescence studies of NO between 1060 and 2000 A

Synchrotron radiation in the 1060 to 2000 A region was used to measure the average absorption and fluorescence cross sections of NO and to determine approximate photodissociation quantum yields. Several vibrational levels of the D(2) sigma(+), E(2) sigma(+), and B(2) delta states have high fluorescence quantum yields. The C(2) and B(2) states do not fluoresce when the excitation energies are above the first dissociation limit, in accord with previous experiments. In general, the fluorescence yields decrease with increasing photon energy. The quantitative measurements are compared with spectroscopic observations and are found to be reasonably consistent.

Dissociative and double photoionization of CO from threshold to 90 A

Partial cross sections for molecular photoionization (CO(+)), dissociative photoionization (C(+) and O(+)), and dissociative double photoionization (C(2+)) in CO have been measured from their thresholds to 90 A using techniques of mass spectrometry. The results are compared with data reported previously. Several peaks observed in the cross section curves for dissociated fragments are tentatively assigned by comparing with those in the photoelectron spectra reported for CO. It is concluded that the shoulder in the total absorption cross section curve between 400 and 90 A results solely from the dissociative ionization processes.

Chemiluminescence of nitric oxide

Measurements of the intensities of the delta and gamma bands of nitric oxide in the nighttime terrestrial thermosphere are presented and used to infer the rate coefficient for the transition from the C 2 Pi to the A 2 Sigma + states. The nightglow spectrum was observed between 1900 and 2300 A at a resolution of 15 A by a rocket-borne scanning 1/4-m spectrometer pointing north at an apogee of 150 km. Progressions of the delta, gamma and epsilon bands are identified on the spectra by the construction of synthetic spectra, and the contributions of resonance fluorescence to the total band intensities are calculated. Finally, the ratio of the sum of the gamma bands for v-prime = 0 to the sum of the delta bands for v-prime = 0 is used to derive a branching ratio of 0.21 + or - 0.04 to the A 2 Sigma + state, which yields a probability for the C-A transition of 5.6 + or - 1.5 x to the 6th/sec.

The ionization structure of the Ring Nebula. II - Ultraviolet observations

Good agreement is found for O and N abundances, and the importance of charge-transfer reactions to the ionization of Ne is confirmed, in UV observations of emission line intensities for four positions in the Ring Nebula that have been previously studied optically. It is noted that the C(2+) abundance inferred from the optical 4267 A recombination line is as much as 10 times brighter than that measured from the UV lines, and that this discrepancy is greatest near the central star. The most attractive explanation for this phenomenon is the resonance fluorescence due to light from the central star. Both Ne/O and C/H abundances are in good agreement with previously measured average values for planetary nebulae.

Parallax studies of four selected fields

Astrometric studies have been completed for four central stars Wolf 294, 39 Com, Case 2, and Vega - and selected reference stars in each of those regions. The parallax of Wolf 294 was measured as 0.1806 + or - 0.0033 arcsec. 39 Com is a visual/astrometric binary with an estimated period of 125 yr and a parallax of 0.0297 + or - 0.0044 arcsec. C 2 was measured as a white dwarf from a Warner and Swasey Observatory spectral survey; its white dwarf status is confirmed by its parallax of 0.0186 + or - 0.0109 arcsec. Vega's parallax was measured as 0.1243 + or - 0.0049 arcsec; a small apparent nonrandom distribution in the residuals is most likely an error from the neutral density filter used for magnitude reduction of the central star.

BSPLASH: A three-stage surface interpolant to scattered data

Given N distinct points (X sub i, Y sub i) and N real numbers Z sub i, BSPLASH constructs a function G (x, y) that satisfies G (x sub i, y sub i) = Z sub i for i = 1,..., N. This C(2) interpolant consists of a bicubic spline approximation and Shepard's bivariate interpolant.

The ionization structure of planetary nebulae. 3: NGC 7009

Spectrophotometric observations of emission line intensities were made in 8 positions in the planetary nebula NGC 7009. For the 6 brightest positions, the coverage is from 1400 A to 10,000 A. Standard equations used to correct for the existence of elements in other than the optical observable ionization stages give results over a wide range of ionization that are consistent and agree with abundances calculated using ultraviolet lines. This result is particularly gratifying for N because previously the standard formula gave inconsistent abundances in NGC 7009. The major outstanding problem is that the lambda 4267 CII line implies a C(2+) abundance as much as 12 times greater than that determined from the UV lines. This discrepancy is greatest nearest the central star, as is the case in the planetary nebula NGC 6720. The logarithmic abundances (relative to H=12.00) are: He=11.07, 0=8.68, N=8.10, Ne=8.16, C=8.18, Ar=6.36, and S=7.12. The average of the Ne, Ar, and S abundances agrees to within 5% of that for NGC 6720, but the O, N, nd C abundances average 1.9 times lower in NGC 7009, suggesting that here may have been mixing of processed material in the planetary precursor in NGC 6720.

Influence of liquid water and water vapor on antimisting kerosene (AMK)

Experiments have been performed to evaluate the compatibility of liquid water and water vapor with antimisting kerosenes (AMK) containing polymer additive FM-9 developed by Imperial Chemical Industries. This effort consists of the determination of water solubility in AMK, influence of water on restoration (degradation) of AMK, and effect of water on standard AMK quality control methods. The principal conclusions of this investigation are: (1) the uptake of water in AMK critically depends upon the degree of agitation and can be as high as 1300 ppm at 20 C, (2) more than 250 to 300 ppm of water in AMK causes an insoluble second phase to form. The amount of this second phase depends on fuel temperature, agitation, degree of restoration (degradation) and the water content of the fuel, (3) laboratory scale experiments indicate precipitate formation when water vapor comes in contact with cold fuel surfaces at a much lower level of water (125 to 150 ppm), (4) precipitate formation is very pronounced in these experiments where humid air is percolated through a cold fuel (-20 C), (5) laboratory tests further indicate that water droplet settling time is markedly reduced in AMK as compared to jet A, (6) limited low temperature testing down to -30 C under laboratory conditions indicates the formation of stable, transparent gels.

The ionization structure of planetary nebulae. 4: NGC 6853

Spectrophotometric observations of emission line intensities were made in seven positions in the planetary nebula NGC 6853; for five of the positions, coverage is across the entire spectral range 1400A to 9600A. Standard equations used to correct for the existence of elements in other than the optically-observable ionization stages give results over a wide range of ionization that are generally consistent and in agreement with abundances calculated using ultraviolet lines. As in the previous studies in this series, the lambda 4267 CII line implies a c(2+) abundance that is higher than that determined from UV lines. Although this effect is much smaller than in NGC 6720 and NGC 7009, it is again largest nearest the central star, giving more evidence that the excitation mechanism for the lambda 4267 line is not understood.

The ionization structure of planetary nebulae V NGC 3242

Spectrophotometric observations of emission line intensities over the spectral range 1400 A to 9600 A were made in five positions in the planetary nebula NGC 3242. In two of the positions, both the weakness of the 1548 A, 1550 A C IV resonance lines and the steepness of the Balmer decrement suggest the possibility of internal dust in the nebula. The measured electron temperature varies little from the average value of 11,100 K, which is in reasonably good agreement with the less accurate value of 12,900 K measured from the Balmer continuum. The 4267 A C II line implies a C(2+) abundance that is much higher than that determined from the 1906 A, 1908 A C III lines. This discrepancy decreases with increasing distance from the central star. Equations used to correct for the existence of elements in other than the optically-observable ionization stages give results that are consistent and in agreement with abundances calculated using ultraviolet lines. This discrepancy decreases with increasing distance from the central star. Equations used to correct for the existence of elements in other than the optically-observable ionization stages give results that are consistent and in agreement with abundances calculated using ultraviolet lines. The logarithmic abundances are He=10.96, 0=8.64, N=7.96, Ne=8.04, C=8.41, Ar=6.15, and S=6.51.

Chemistry of the Apollo 11 highland component

Thirty-eight Apollo 11 lunar highland fragments from coarse fines 10085 have been subjected to petrologic and chemical study. Six major chemical groups are identified: (a) high-K KREEP; (b) anorthosite with a 10X chondrite positive Eu anomaly and anorthosite with 30X positive Eu anomaly; (c) ANT; (d) LKFM; (e) anorthositic gabbro with no Eu anomaly, with a positive Eu anomaly, and with a negative Eu anomaly; and (f) dominant Highland component, 2X-10X chondrite with a positive 10X-14X Eu anomaly. Newly recognized groups are presented based on the REE patterns: (a) ANT group with 5X La and a 22X positive Eu anomaly; (b) 10X flat with 14X positive Eu anomaly; and (c) 2-3X flat with a 10X positive Eu anomaly. The highland suite is very low in K and REE, and is overall quite similar to the Apollo 16 suite.

IUE Observations of the Gaseous Component of the Local Interstellar Medium

Discovery of interstellar Ge, Ga, and Kr is reported. Several intercombination lines of Fe 2 are detected. The depletion is most pronounced in Ca, Ti, and V. The highly ionized gas C 4 and Si 4 is not co-extensive with the Si 2 and C 2 gas nor with the O 6 gas. The molecular gas (CO) shows very small velocity dispersion (b approximately 1 km/sec). HD 149404 has the richest interstellar spectrum (except molecules) of all the stars in this study. HD 147889, the heavily obscured star in the Rho Oph cloud, has the strongest interstellar CO spectrum. Noisy nature of the spectra precludes detection of other molecules.

Enigmatic Hills of the Mottled Plains, Mare Acidalium Quadrangle (MC-4), Mars

Interpretations of Mariner 9 and Viking images of the mottled plains in Mare Acidalium are present and discussed. Although the boundaries between all the units are gradational, four subdivisions were recognized within the mottled plains region. One of these subdivisions was designated hummocky mottled plains. The unit is characterized by many small (1 km), irregularly spaced dark hills surrounded by brighter material. One very poor-quality, high-resolution Viking strip (528B01-04) indicates that some of these dark hills have circular summit depressions. Possible interpretations of origin of these hills include: cinder cones, volcanic domes, maar volcanoes, pseudocraters, impact craters, or pingos. The uncratered hills or knobs may be igneous plugs, volcanic necks, or the dark remnants of a hummocky, cratered surface protruding through a relatively bright eolian blanket. The presence, however, of the small dark hills on the flow of the large (130 km diameter) C(2) crater Lomonosov, suggests that similar dark hills elsewhere also may be secondary.

Influence of Land Surface Processes on the Indian Monsoon: A Numerical Study

Twelve July integrations are made with the Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheres' Global Circulation Model GLAS GCM to investigate the influence of local changes in the land surface fluxes, that may be produced by changes in the land surface vegetation, on the monsoon circulation and rainfall over the Indian subcontinent. The study consists of an ensemble mean of three integrations each for four separate cases: (1) control integrations with normaly prescribed boundary conditions, called C; (2) three other integrations with the surface albedo increased (from 0.14 to 0.20) on the Indian subcontinent, called E sub 1; (3) another set of three integrations with the surface albedo increased as above together with a decrease of surface roughness (from 45 cm to 0.02 cm), called E sub 2; and (4) a last set of three integrations with higher surface albedo and low surface roughness as above, but with no evapotranspiration, called E sub 3. Except for these changes in the anomaly region (delimited by solid line) all other boundary conditions were prescribed. Consequently, their time evaluation is unaffected by the Earth-atmosphere interactions.

Development of electrodes for the NASA iron/chromium

This program was directed primarily to the development of the negative (Cr3+/Cr2+) electrode for the NASA chromous/ferric Redox battery. The investigation of the effects of substrate processing and gold/lead catalyzation parameters on electrochemical performance were continued. In addition, the effects of reactant cross-mixing, acidity level, and temperature were examined for both Redox couples. Finally, the performance of optimized electrodes was tested in system hardware (1/3 square foot single cell). The major findings are discussed: (1) The recommended processing temperature for the carbon felt, as a substrate for the negative electrode, is 1650 to 1750 C, (2) The recommended gold catalyzation procedure is essentially the published NASA procedure (NASA TM-82724, Nov. 1981) based on deposition from aqueous methanol solution, with the imposition of a few controls such as temperature (25 C) and precatalyzation pH of the felt (7), (3) Experimental observations of the gold catalyzation process and subsequent electron microscopy indicate that the gold is deposited from the colloidal state, induced by contact of the solution with the carbon felt, (4) Electrodeposited lead appears to be present as a thin uniform layer over the entire surface of the carbon fibers, rather than an discrete particles, and (5) Cross-mixing of reactants (Fe-2+ in negative electrode solution or Cr-3+ in the positive electrode solution) did not appear to produce significant interference at either electrode.

The ionization structure of planetary nebulae. IV - NGC 6853

Upgraded UV and IR data were taken of the planetary nebula NGC 6853 in the same region as previous optical data to improve the data base on various ionized species in the nebula. The spectral range 1400-9600 A was scanned, and good agreement was obtained between UV and optical ionization abundance data, although the 4267 A C II line yielded a C(2+) abundance larger than indicated by the UV data. The discrepancy concentrated around the central star. Ionization abundances were determined for He, O, N, NC, C, Ar, and S relative to H, and the causes of discrepancies in the abundances compared to those of previous investigators are discussed. It is noted that, as in the planetary nebula NGC 6720, lighter element abundances are higher than solar values, which suggests mixing of processed materials in the envelope of the two nebulae.
