Extending the Southern Shore of the Island of Inversion to F 28

Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-unbound nucleus 28 F has been performed for the first time following proton/neutron removal from 29 Ne/ 29 F beams at energies around 230 MeV / nucleon . The invariant-mass spectra were reconstructed for both the 27 F(*) + n and 26 F(*) + 2n coincidences and revealed a series of well-defined resonances. A near-threshold state was observed in both reactions and is identified as the 28 F ground state, with S n ( 28 F) = -199(6) keV, while analysis of the 2n decay channel allowed a considerably improved S n ( 27 F) = 162(60) keV to be deduced. Comparison with shell-model predictions and eikonal-model reaction calculations have allowed spin-parity assignments to be proposed for some of the lower-lying levels of 28 F. Importantly, in the case of the ground state, the reconstructed 27 F + n momentum distribution following neutron removal from 29 F indicates that it arises mainly from the 1p 3/2 neutron intruder configuration. Finally, this demonstrates that the island of inversion around N = 20 includes 28 F, and most probably 29 F, and suggests that 28 O is not doubly magic.

Dipole Strength Distribution of 8 He and Decay Characteristics

The weak binding and spatially extended neutron densities characteristic of drip-line nuclei give rise to a distinctive low-energy dipole response. The drip-line nucleus 8 He is the most neutron-rich bound nucleus with a mass-to-charge ratio of 𝐴/𝑍 = 4. We measure the dipole response of 8 He, including for the first time the four-neutron decay channel. A total dipole strength of ∑𝐵⁡(𝐸⁢1)(𝐸*< 15 MeV) = 0.95⁢(16)⁢𝑒 2 fm 2 and a dipole polarizability of 𝛼 𝐷 = 0.61⁢(1) fm 3 are extracted from the differential Coulomb-excitation cross section and compared to state-of-the-art theoretical calculations employing coupled cluster and three-body approaches. We find that the dipole continuum is dominated, even at high excitation energies well above the 4⁢𝑛 decay threshold, by two-neutron emission, pointing to a 6 He + 2⁢𝑛 structure of the excited dipole mode. No indication was found for a 4⁢𝑛 final-state correlation, while pronounced 𝑛⁢𝑛 and 6 He−𝑛 final-state correlations are apparent.

Particle-Tracking Proton Computed Tomography—Data Acquisition, Preprocessing, and Preconditioning

Proton CT (pCT) is a promising new imaging technique that can reconstruct relative stopping power (RSP) more accurately than x-ray CT in each cubic millimeter voxel of the patient. This, in turn, will result in better proton range accuracy and, therefore, smaller planned tumor volumes (PTV). The hardware description and some reconstructed images have previously been reported. In a series of two contributions, we focus on presenting the software algorithms that convert pCT detector data to the final reconstructed pCT images for application in proton treatment planning. There were several options on how to accomplish this, and we will describe our solutions at each stage of the data processing chain. In the first paper of this series, we present the data acquisition with the pCT tracking and energy-range detectors and how the data are preprocessed, including the conversion to the well-formatted track information from tracking data and water-equivalent path length from the data of a calibrated multi-stage energy-range detector. These preprocessed data are then used for the initial image formation with an FDK cone-beam CT algorithm. The output of data acquisition, preprocessing, and FDK reconstruction is presented along with illustrative imaging results for two phantoms, including a pediatric head phantom. The second paper in this series will demonstrate the use of iterative solvers in conjunction with the superiorization methodology to further improve the images resulting from the upfront FDK image reconstruction and the implementation of these algorithms on a hybrid CPU/GPU computer cluster.

Structural Simluation Toolkit (SST) v.11.0

The SST provides a parallel framework to perform system simulation of computer architectures to determine their performance and power consumption. Additionally, the SST contains basic models of a computer processor, and interconnect and can connect to an external memory simulator (DRAMSim II). The SST framework provides a simple interface by which other computer simulation models can be combined under a common parallel discrete event-based simulation environment. This allows design exploration of future architectures, analysis of how current computer programs will function on future architectures. The SST provides a parallel discrete event simulation framework, including partitioning and object distribution over MPI. It also provides a mechanism by which components can report their power consumption for analysis.

Structural Simluation Toolkit (SST) v.12.0

The Structural Simulation Toolkit (SST) was developed to explore innovations in highly concurrent computing systems where the instruction set architecture (ISA), micro-architecture, and memory interact with the programming model and communications system. The package provides a fully modular design for extensive exploration of an individual system parameter as well as a parallel simulation environment based on message passing interface (MPI) which enable a high level of performance as well as the ability to look at large systems.
