LArCADe | Liquid Argon Charge Amplification Devices

The Liquid Argon Charge Amplification Devices (LArCADe) project is an R$\&$D effort aimed at developing instrumentation capable of lowering detection thresholds for ionization signatures in liquid and gaseous argon detectors and achieving O(100 $\mu$m) position resolution. The core concept is the use of sharp “tip arrays” that generate strong local electric-field enhancement, enabling charge amplification and collection with improved spatial resolution. A key physics motivation for this work is to enhance the experimental sensitivity of Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CEvNS) measurements to low-energy nuclear recoils by enabling spatially resolved charge reconstruction at reduced ionization thresholds, with the goal of achieving event-by-event energy reconstruction for interactions originating from localized accelerator or astrophysical neutrino sources. This poster will present the current status of the instrumentation R$\&$D, which leverages Fermilab’s Noble Liquid Test Facility and UC Santa Barbara’s Nanofabrication Facility, and will discuss the potential physics impact of this technology.

Snowmass Neutrino Frontier: Neutrino Interaction Cross Sections (NF06) Topical Group Report

A thorough understanding of neutrino cross sections in a wide range of energies is crucial for the successful execution of the entire neutrino physics program. In order to extract neutrino properties, long-baseline experiments need an accurate determination of neutrino cross sections within their detector(s). Since very few of the needed neutrino cross sections across the energy spectrum are directly measured, we emphasize the need for theoretical input and indirect measurements such as electron scattering, which would complement direct measurements. In this report we briefly summarize the current status of our knowledge of the neutrino cross sections and articulate needs of the experiments, ongoing and planned, at energies ranging from CEvNS and supernova neutrino energies to the DUNE and atmospheric neutrino energies.

Low-threshold sapphire detector for rare event searches

Low mass nuclear recoil dark matter and coherent-elastic-neutrino-nucleus-scattering (CE$v$NS) searches confront similar challenges in choosing ultra-low threshold and large-mass detectors. Here, we report experimental results from a 100 g single-crystal sapphire detector design with a diameter of 76 mm and thickness of 4 mm instrumented with transition edge sensors (TES). Sapphire is a crystal of aluminum oxide (Al 2 O) and has been found to be a good candidate for light mass dark matter search experiments due to its lower atomic mass compared to other detector materials such as germanium and silicon. This new phonon-assisted sapphire detector was characterized to yield a baseline recoil energy resolution of 28.4 ± 0.4 eV. The detector is designed to be sensitive to low-energy rare interactions with an intention to investigate the low-mass region of dark matter phase-space and search for CE$v$NS at the reactor site.

Development of a 83 mKr source for the calibration of the CENNS-10 liquid argon detector

We report on the preparation of and calibration measurements with a 83 mKr source for the CENNS-10 liquid argon detector. 83 mKr atoms generated in the decay of a 83 Rb source were introduced into the detector via injection into the Ar circulation loop. Scintillation light arising from the 9.4 keV and 32.1 keV conversion electrons in the decay of 83 mKr in the detector volume were then observed. This calibration source allows the characterization of the low-energy response of the CENNS-10 detector and is applicable to other low-energy-threshold detectors. The energy resolution of the detector was measured to be 9% at the total 83 mKr decay energy of 41.5 keV. Lastly, we performed an analysis to separately calibrate the detector using the two conversion electrons at 9.4 keV and 32.1 keV.

Monitoring the SNS basement neutron background with the MARS detector

Here, we present the analysis and results of the first dataset collected with the MARS neutron detector deployed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) for the purpose of monitoring and characterizing the beam-related neutron (BRN) background for the COHERENT collaboration. MARS was positioned next to the COH-CsI coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering detector in the SNS basement corridor. This is the basement location of closest proximity to the SNS target and thus, of highest neutrino flux, but it is also well shielded from the BRN flux by infill concrete and gravel. Furthermore, these data show the detector registered roughly one BRN per day. Using MARS' measured detection efficiency, the incoming BRN flux is estimated to be 1.20 ± 0.56 neutrons/m 2 /MWh for neutron energies above ~3.5 MeV and up to a few tens of MeV. We compare our results with previous BRN measurements in the SNS basement corridor reported by other neutron detectors.
