Alignment frustration in block copolymer films with block copolymer grafted TiO 2 nanoparticles under soft-shear cold zone annealing

Block copolymers (BCPs) have received significant attention as promising candidates for sequestering nanoparticles and fabrication of aligned nanostructures with optimal optical or electrical properties. We investigate the influence of static and dynamic thermal field on the alignment of polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) BCP morphology with the loading of novel poly(methyl methacrylate-block-Polystyrene) (PMMA-b-PS)-grafted-TiO 2 nanoparticles (BCP-g-TiO 2 ). Observation of characteristics IR peaks for PMMA and PS in BCP-g-TiO 2 nanoparticles and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) results of the outer coating of core nanoparticle, validate the grafting to approach in synthesizing BCP-g-TiO 2 . In this work, we report that under the sharp dynamic thermal field, at low loading of BCP-g-TiO 2 , there is good dispersion of nanoparticles in unidirectionally aligned BCP matrix in film interior probed by GISAXS, while, at high nanoparticle loading (~10 wt%), there is local frustration in the unidirectional alignment of the BCP matrix due to aggregation of BCP-g-TiO 2 nanoparticles. However, Grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) shows clearly that the BCP films remain largely locally ordered at the domain scale, despite these large perturbations to long-range ordering even at high loading level, while bringing in new TiO 2 functionality to the BCP films, such as UVO absorptivity or biofouling prevention, important to potential new applications of such membranes.

Molecular Weight Dependence of Block Copolymer Micelle Fragmentation Kinetics

The effect of molecular weight (M) on the fragmentation kinetics of micelles formed by 1,2-polybutadiene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PB-PEO) copolymers was studied in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. A series of six samples, with total M ranging from 10 4 to 10 5 g mol –1 and nearly constant composition (f PEO ≈ 0.4), were examined; all six formed spherical micelles with PEO coronas. Nonequilibrium PB-PEO micelles were prepared by direct dissolution, a process that systematically produces nanoparticles with mean aggregation numbers more than twice the equilibrium values. When subjected to high temperature annealing (170 °C), the average micelle radius was found to decrease substantially, as determined by temperature-jump dynamic light scattering (T-jump DLS) and time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering (TR-SAXS). Furthermore, the characteristic fragmentation times (τ) were found to increase strongly with increasing degree of polymerization N, as τ ~ N 1.8 . This result compares favorably with the prediction of a previously untested model.

Nanostructure Scaling in Semi-Dilute Triblock Copolymer Gels

Here, there is a considerable body of work that describes the scaling of diblock copolymer micelle dimensions in dilute and semi-dilute solution based upon block degrees of polymerization and copolymer concentration. However, there is a lack of analogous information for semi-dilute ABA triblock copolymer gels, which consist of ABA triblock copolymer dissolved in midblock-selective (B-selective) solvent. The present study uses small angle X-ray scattering to extract micelle dimensions for numerous triblock copolymer gels that vary in copolymer identity (and hence block lengths) and copolymer concentration, as well as gels that contain various ratios of two unique triblock copolymers. Analysis of micelle structural data subsequently translates to universal scaling expressions for the micelle core radius – r A ≈ N A 0.53 N B -0.14 $\phi$ ABA 0.16 where N A and N B are the endblock and midblock degrees of polymerization, respectively, and $\phi$ ABA is the volume fraction of triblock copolymer in the gel – and for the intermicelle spacing – l AA ≈ N A 0.09 N B 0.29 $\phi$ ABA -0.35 . Each scaling expression describes the full collection of experimental data very well. Additionally, these scaling expressions are partially in line with expectations from semi-dilute diblock copolymer solution theory.

High-Resolution Comonomer Sequencing of Blocky Brominated Syndiotactic Polystyrene Copolymers Using 13C NMR Spectroscopy and Computer Simulations

This work demonstrates the first high-resolution comonomer sequencing of Blocky brominated syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS-co-sPS-Br) copolymers based on pentad assign- ments of the quaternary carbon region of the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum. Copolymers containing p-bromostyrene (Br-Sty) units were prepared in matched sets using postpolymerization bromination methods carried out in the heterogeneous gel state (Blocky) and homogeneous solution state (Random). Quantitative information from the quaternary carbon spectra, heteronuclear multiple bond correlation spectroscopy, electronic structure calculations, and simulated statistically random copolymers was correlated to confirm the carbon resonance assignments for all 20 possible pentad comonomer sequences. Using the experimental pentad sequence prevalences, a computer code was developed to simulate chains with microstructures typical of each sample as a means to visually represent the copolymer blockiness with quantitative precision. Based on the microstructure and distribution of run lengths in these chains, the simulations revealed that the Blocky copolymers contain a high degree of blockiness. By comparing the run lengths in the simulated chains to the average number of styrene units in a crystalline segment of sPS (found by small-angle X-ray scattering), copolymer crystallizability was predicted. For the simulated Blocky B-21% (21 mol % Br-Sty) chain, the probability of randomly selecting a styrene unit in a crystallizable block was 25.8%, while that in the simulated Random R-18% was zero, in excellent agreement with the experimental crystallization behavior measured by differential scanning calorimetry. Additionally, these predictions confirmed that the simulated chains accurately represent the ensemble of chains in their respective copolymer samples. Furthermore, each simulated Blocky chain contained one or more long sPS blocks that paralleled the measured 38-40 styrene units spanning a crystalline segment within the sPS/CCl4 gel. This finding affirmed that the long sPS segments originated from the precise lamellar structure within the heterogeneous gel morphology (i.e., block length is correlated with lamellar thickness). Overall, the ability to tailor the copolymer microstructure through control of the semicrystalline gel morphology opens the door to synthesizing ordered copolymers by postpolymerization functionalization processes with unprecedented levels of compositional control.

Effect of microphase separation on the limiting current density in hybrid organic-inorganic copolymer electrolytes

Hybrid organic-inorganic block copolymer electrolytes are of interest to enable batteries containing lithium metal anodes. The conductive block is a standard polymer electrolyte of poly(ethylene oxide) and the mechanically rigid block is an inorganic poly(acryloisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane) polymer. Here, in this paper, we compare a poly(acryloisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane)-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(acryloisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane) (POSS-PEO-POSS) triblock copolymer and a poly(ethylene oxide)-b- poly(acryloisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane) (PEO-POSS) diblock copolymer mixed with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide salt. We have experimentally measured the limiting current density in lithium symmetric cells containing hybrid organic-inorganic electrolytes at 90 °C. The cells were polarized at a large range of applied current density. The diblock copolymer electrolyte exhibited a clear plateau in cell potential at all current densities below the limiting current density. At low applied current density, the triblock copolymer electrolyte also exhibited a clear plateau in cell potential. At currents approaching the limiting current density, the triblock copolymer electrolyte exhibited an underdamped potential profile. The cell potential did not reach a plateau at current densities above the limiting current in both systems. The diblock and triblock copolymer electrolytes were fully characterized using electrochemical methods to determine the ionic conductivity, cation current fraction, salt diffusion coefficient, and open circuit voltage as a function of salt concentration. Cell potential and salt concentration as functions of position in the cell at various current densities were calculated using Newman's concentrated solution theory. The theoretical limiting current density was calculated to be the current density at which salt is depleted at the cathode. We see quantitative agreement between experimental measurements and theoretical predictions for the limiting current density in the diblock copolymer electrolyte which has an ordered structure at all salt concentrations, while the experimental limiting current density is lower than the theoretical prediction for the triblock copolymer electrolyte, which exhibits a disordered morphology at high salt concentrations.

Investigation of the Self-Assembly Behavior of Statistical Bottlebrush Copolymers via Self-Consistent Field Theory Simulations

Bottlebrush copolymers, a class of high-density side-chain-grafted copolymers with high molecular weights, have recently attracted extensive research attention due to the dramatic reduction of chain entanglement in these copolymers, unique self-assembly behaviors, and distinctive physical properties. In this study, we employ self-consistent field theory simulations to systemically investigate the phase behavior of statistical bottlebrush copolymers A-stat-B, an intriguing subclass of bottlebrush copolymers with random or alternating sequences of A and B side chains. We find that a broader variety of ordered mesophases can be stabilized in the melts of these copolymers relative to the more extensively studied bottlebrush block copolymers. In particular, we observe that these statistical copolymers can stabilize sphere phases over a larger range of species volume fractions than their diblock and tetrablock counterparts but require much higher segregation strength to achieve this. The sphere and hexagonally packed cylinder phases formed by conformationally symmetric statistical bottlebrush copolymers possess interesting discrete core–shell structures with the backbone and lower volume fraction side-chain species forming shells and cores, respectively. Moreover, we uncover a new strategy of stabilizing the Frank–Kasper phase A15 by introducing conformational asymmetry through different side-chain lengths and also observe deflection of order–order phase boundaries and significant mixing between the backbones and short side chains as conformational asymmetry is introduced.

Nanocarrier-loaded block copolymer dual domain organogels

Loaded polymer gels are prevalent materials in the controlled release community and, fairly recently, have been formulated to include nanocarrier domains such as micelles and vesicles. One mechanism used to establish the solid-like characteristic of gels is block copolymer self-assembly, which can result in a system-spanning, physically-crosslinked network. Additionally, the combination of nanocarrier and crosslink domain presence offers gels with a rich nanoscale phase space capable of intricate macroscopic property tuning. The current manuscript provides an overview of nanocarrier-loaded block copolymer organogels wherein nanocarriers are reverse micelles formed by sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT), the block copolymer is a styrenic ABA triblock copolymer, and the gel solvent is aliphatic mineral oil. This introductory overview starts by identifying the envelope in ternary phase space wherein nanocarrier-loaded block copolymer organogels form (2-49 wt% triblock copolymer and 8x10 -3 -1 wt% AOT). Next, a detailed nanostructural description of gels varying in AOT and triblock copolymer concentration is presented. The manuscript concludes with demonstration of AOT reverse micelle release and gel uniaxial tensile response for gels containing 0-1 wt% AOT and 5-40 wt% styrenic triblock copolymer.
