Metasomatic Alteration of Type 3 Ordinary and Carbonaceous Chondrites

Metasomatism refers to the process during which a pre-existing rock undergoes compositional and mineralogical transformations associated with chemical reactions triggered by the reaction of fluids which invade the protolith. It changes chemical compositions of minerals, promotes their dissolution and precipitation of new minerals. In this paper, we review metasomatic alteration of type 3 ordinary (H, L, LL) and carbonaceous (CV, CO, CK) chondrites, including (i) secondary mineralization, (ii) physicochemical conditions, (iii) chronology ( 53 Mn- 53 Cr, 26 Al- 26 Mg, 129 I- 129 Xe) of metasomatic alteration, (iv) records of metasomatic alteration in H, O, N, C, S, and Cl isotopic systematics, (v) effects of metasomatic alteration on O- and Al-Mg-isotope systematics of primary minerals in chondrules and refractory inclusions, and (vi) sources of water ices in metasomatically altered CV, CO, and ordinary chondrites, and outline future studies.

Experimental and Computational Study of Pyrogenic Carbonaceous Matter Facilitated Hydrolysis of 2,4-Dinitroanisole (DNAN)

This study investigated the reaction pathway of 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN) on the pyrogenic carbonaceous matter (PCM) to assess the scope and mechanism of PCM-facilitated surface hydrolysis. DNAN degradation was observed at pH 11.5 and 25 °C with a model PCM, graphite, whereas no significant decay occurred without graphite. Experiments were performed at pH 11.5 due to the lack of DNAN decay at pH below 11.0, which was consistent with previous studies. Graphite exhibited a 1.78-fold enhancement toward DNAN decay at 65 °C and pH 11.5 relative to homogeneous solution by lowering the activation energy for DNAN hydrolysis by 54.3 ± 3.9%. This is supported by our results from the computational modeling using Car–Parrinello simulations by ab initio molecular dynamics/molecular mechanics (AIMD/MM) and DFT free energy simulations, which suggest that PCM effectively lowered the reaction barriers by approximately 8 kcal mol –1 compared to a homogeneous solution. Quaternary ammonium (QA)-modified activated carbon performed the best among several PCMs by reducing DNAN half-life from 185 to 2.5 days at pH 11.5 and 25 °C while maintaining its reactivity over 10 consecutive additions of DNAN. We propose that PCM can affect the thermodynamics and kinetics of hydrolysis reactions by confining the reaction species near PCM surfaces, thus making them less accessible to solvent molecules and creating an environment with a weaker dielectric constant that favors nucleophilic substitution reactions. Nitrite formation during DNAN decay confirmed a denitration pathway, whereas demethylation, the preferred pathway in homogeneous solution, produces 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP). Denitration catalyzed by PCM is advantageous to demethylation because nitrite is less toxic than DNAN and DNP. These findings provide critical insights for reactive adsorbent design that has broad implications for catalyst design and pollutant abatement.

Nature of Oxygen Adsorption on Defective Carbonaceous Materials

Here, plane-wave density functional theory has been used to study oxygen adsorption on graphene, graphite, and (12,0) zigzag single-walled carbon nanotubes with and without Stone–Wales (SW) and single-vacancy (SV) defects to understand the role of defects on carbonaceous material reactivity. Atomic oxygen adsorption leads to the formation of an epoxide on defect-free graphene and graphite and an ether on the exterior wall of carbon nanotubes and SW-defected materials. O 2 chemisorption is endothermic on defect-free graphene and graphite and slightly exothermic on defect-free nanotubes. O 2 chemisorption energies are predicted to be –1.1 to –1.4 eV on an SW defect and –6.0 to –8.0 eV on an SV defect. An SW defect lowers the energy barriers by 0.90 and 0.50 eV for O 2 chemisorption on graphene and nanotubes, respectively. The formation of a C–O–O–C group is important for O 2 dissociation on defect-free and SW-defected materials. The energy barrier is less than 0.30 eV on an SV defect. The more reactive SW defect toward O adsorption on graphene is mostly due to the strained defective carbon atoms being able to donate more electrons to an O to form an ether. The larger 2s character in the hybrid orbitals in an ether than in an epoxide makes the ether C–O bond stronger. Stronger C–O binding on an SW-defective carbon nanotube than on a defect-free nanotube is in part due to more flexibility of the defect to release the epoxide ring strain to form an ether.

Recent Trends in Transport of Surface Carbonaceous Aerosols to the Upper-Troposphere-Lower-Stratosphere Linked to Expansion of the Asian Summer Monsoon Anticyclone

Using Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications Version-2 (MERRA-2) re-analyses, we have examined recent trends (2000–2019) in transport of surface carbonaceous aerosols (CAs), that is, organic carbon and black carbon, to the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) during the Asian summer monsoon (ASM). We find a significant increased concentration of UTLS CA, linked to a linear trend in an expansion of the Asian Summer Monsoon Anticyclone (ASMA). Over core monsoon latitudes (25°–35°N), the trends in UTLS CA are enabled by increased upward transport from surface sources via an intensified monsoon meridional circulation, with increased latent heating over the southern Tibetan Plateau and foothill regions, enhanced by feedback processes associated with radiative heating by UTLS CA. In the extra-tropics, increased UTLS CA stems primarily from an extended source of increased wildfire emissions over eastern Siberia and northern Asia, coincident with a large-scale anomalous anticyclone with enhanced surface warming and drying near (80°–120°E, 55°–70°N). Here, CAs are transported upward from the surface to the ULS, likely by increased pyro-convection associated with enhanced wildfires, and enter the tropical UTLS via increased equatorward transport on the eastern flanks of anomalous upper-level anticyclones, coupled to the expanded ASMA. Overall, the increasing UTLS CA trends associated with expansion of the ASMA are consistent with a hydrostatic expansion of a warming troposphere, reflected in a rise in the tropical tropopause and consequential dynamical adjustments of the ASM subtropical jetstream, modulating the climate of the greater ASM region.

Triple oxygen and hydrogen stable isotope composition of hydroxyl water in Orgueil (CI-type) and Tagish Lake (C2-type) carbonaceous chondrites

The primitive carbonaceous chondrites are of interest to cosmochemical science because they contain relatively large amounts of ‘water’ (H 2 O and/or OH – ) within phyllosilicate minerals. This water is evidence for the accretion of ices by their parent planetesimals, and thus represents an archive of the isotopic compositions of H 2 O in the protoplanetary environments. Here, in this study, we used thermogravimetry-enabled laser spectroscopy (TGA-IRIS) analyses of the Orgueil and Tagish Lake meteorites to make δ 2 H, δ 18 O, and Δ′ 17 O measurements of the H 2 O and OH – contained in the different hydrous minerals that comprise each meteorite. In Orgueil, we measured mass-weighted averages of OH – in the saponite and serpentine phyllosilicate matrix to be δ 2 H = 192 ‰, δ 18 O = 1.5 ‰, which are unquestionably of extraterrestrial origin with Δ′ 17 O = 1.0 ‰. For Tagish Lake, analogous values of OH– in the saponite and serpentine phyllosilicate matrix are δ 2 H = 704 ‰, δ 18 O = 11.3 ‰, and are similarly unambiguously extraterrestrial with Δ′ 17 O = 0.82 ‰. We estimate that the parent H 2 O involved in aqueous alteration of Orgueil had δ 18 O value ≥ +23 ‰. In Orgueil, we interpret the phyllosilicate petrographic relationships, and the δ 18 O values of OH – in saponite and serpentine to indicate that saponite formed first, at a lower temperature by 35 to 53 °C than serpentine. This suggests that the Orgueil parent body experienced increasing temperature during the phase of active aqueous alteration (prograde) which set the δ 18 O OH values of the serpentine and saponite. In the case of Tagish Lake, serpentine formed at a lower temperature by 32 to 60 °C than saponite, for the simplest case with constant δ 18 O H2O values. If serpentine formed first, followed by saponite formation at 32 to 60 °C °C higher temperature, this suggests that Tagish Lake sample TL1 underwent prograde aqueous alteration as the parent body heated up. We find evidence that the parent H 2 O for Orgueil, Tagish Lake sample TL1, and Murchison (based on data from a previous study) may have had Δ′ 17 O values of >0.64 ‰.

Sensitivity of Carbonaceous Aerosol Properties to the Implementation of a Dynamic Aging Parameterization in the Regional Climate Model RegCM

Freshly emitted soot is hydrophobic, but condensation of secondary aerosols and coagulation with other particles modify its hygroscopic optical properties. This conversion is referred to as “aerosol aging.” Many climate models represent this aging process with a fixed aging time scale, whereas in reality, it is a dynamic process that depends on environmental conditions. Here, we implement a dynamic aging parameterization scheme in the regional climate model RegCM4 in place of the fixed aging timescale of 1.15 days (~27.6 h) and examine its impact on the aerosol life cycle over the Indian subcontinent. The conversion from hydrophobic to hydrophilic aerosol is usually lower than 27.6 h over the entire landmass and lower than 10 h over the polluted Indo-Gangetic Basin (IGB), with seasonal variability. Due to the implementation of the dynamic aging scheme, the column burden and surface mass concentration of carbonaceous aerosols increase during the drier season (December–February) when washout is negligible. The burden is reduced during the wet season (June–September) due to a more efficient washout except over the IGB, where a reduction in precipitation as a result of radiative feedbacks increases the aerosol concentrations. Over the polluted IGB, surface dimming increases due to the dynamic aging scheme, with the top of the atmosphere forcing remaining mostly unchanged. As a result, atmospheric heating increases by at least 1.2 W/m 2 . Our results suggest that climate models should incorporate dynamic aging for a more realistic representation of aerosol simulations, especially in highly polluted regions.

Room-temperature superconductivity in a carbonaceous sulfur hydride

One of the long-standing challenges in experimental physics is the observation of room-temperature superconductivity (RTSC). Recently, high temperature conventional superconductivity in hydrogen-rich materials has been reported in several systems under high pressure. The most significant discovery in reaching RTSC is the pressure-driven disproportionation of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) to H 3 S with a confirmed Tc of 203 kelvin at 155 gigapascals. As H 2 S readily mixes with hydrogen to form guest-host structures at lower pressures, the comparable size of methane to H 2 S should allow molecular exchange within a large assemblage of van der Waals solids that are (highly) hydrogen-rich with H 2 inclusions that are then the building blocks for novel superconducting compounds at extreme conditions. Here, we report superconductivity in a photochemically transformed carbonaceous sulfur hydride system with a maximum superconducting transition temperature of 287.7 ± 1.2 kelvin (~15° celsius) achieved at 267 ± 10 gigapascals. The superconducting state is observed over a broad pressure range from 140 to 275 gigapascals, with a dramatic upturn in Tc above 220 gigapascals. Superconductivity is established by the observation of zero resistance, magnetic susceptibility up to 190 gigapascals, and reduction of Tc under an external magnetic field up to 9 tesla, with an upper critical magnetic field of ~62 tesla based on Ginzburg–Landau (GL) model at zero temperature. The light, quantum nature of hydrogen limits structural and stoichiometric determination using x-ray scattering techniques. Raman spectroscopy is used to probe the chemical and structural transformations pre-metallization. In conclusion, the introduction of chemical tuning within our reported ternary system could be the path forward to lowering the pressure while preserving the RTSC properties.

Protection and enrichment: how two different carbonaceous biofilm supports improve methane yield from encapsulated anaerobic microorganisms

Encapsulating anaerobic microorganisms allows for the separation of the solids retention time from the hydraulic retention time during anaerobic wastewater treatment. The harsh chemistries involved in the process of encapsulation can have adverse effects on microorganisms for anaerobic digestion, especially methanogens, and can lead to lower methane yields after encapsulation. Improving the survival and maintaining activity of anaerobic communities during encapsulation will likely be the key to improving methane yield. In this study, we investigated the encapsulation of biomass grown as biofilms on two carbonaceous materials, biochar and powdered activated carbon (PAC), to improve methane yield. Microorganisms grown as biofilms on biochar and PAC were encapsulated in polyethylene glycol (PEG) and incubated for 10 days. After 10 days, the unamended control capsules produced 81.6 ± 5.4 μmol of methane, while PAC-amended capsules produced 129.8 ± 1.9 μmol and biochar-amended capsules produced 432.96 ± 20.8 μmol methane, with the differences being statistically significant (p < 0.05). In biochar, a higher relative abundance of methanogens led to increased methane production capacity. The ratio of the methyl coenzyme M reductase (mcrA) genes to total 16S rRNA genes in the encapsulated biochar-supported biofilms was significantly higher than that in the encapsulated unsupported (p = 4.9 × 10 −5 ) and the PAC-supported biofilms (p = 0.012). Biochar-supported biofilms also had higher methane output per mcrA or 16S rRNA gene copy number. For the PAC, biofilms were protected from ammonium persulfate (APS), a powerful oxidant used in the encapsulation process. PAC removed 92% of dissolved APS, reducing exposure of the methanogens to this chemical. Unfortunately, this removal of APS compromised capsule stability, limiting the amount of PAC that could be added to the capsules. Furthermore, amendments that improve survival and activity of methanogens should be used in the capsules instead of those that protect methanogens by interfering with encapsulant polymerization chemistry.

Metasomatic alteration of coarse‐grained igneous calcium‐aluminum‐rich inclusions from CK3 carbonaceous chondrites

Abstract We report on the primary and secondary mineralogies of three coarse‐grained igneous calcium‐aluminum‐rich inclusions (CAIs) (Compact Type A [CTA], Type B [B], and forsterite‐bearing type B [FoB]) from the Northwest Africa (NWA) 5343 (CK3.7) and NWA 4964 (CK3.8) carbonaceous chondrites, compare them with the mineralogy of igneous CAIs from the Allende (CV3.6) chondrite, and discuss the nature of the alteration processes that affected the CK and CV CAIs. The primary mineralogy and mineral chemistry of the CK3 CAIs studied are similar to those from Allende; however, primary melilite and anorthite are nearly completely absent. Although the secondary minerals identified in CK CAIs (Al‐diopside, andradite, Cl‐apatite, clintonite, forsterite, ferroan olivine, Fe,Ni‐sulfides, grossular, ilmenite, magnetite, plagioclase, spinel, titanite, and wadalite) occur also in the Allende CAIs, there are several important differences: (i) In addition to melilite and anorthite, which are nearly completely replaced by secondary minerals, the alteration of CK CAIs also affected high‐Ti pyroxenes (fassaite and grossmanite) characterized by high Ti 3+ /Ti 4+ ratio and spinel. These pyroxenes are corroded and crosscut by veins of Fe‐ and Ti‐bearing grossular, Fe‐bearing Al,Ti‐diopside, titanite, and ilmenite. Spinel is corroded by Fe‐bearing Al‐diopside and grossular. (ii) The secondary mineral assemblages of grossular + monticellite and grossular + wollastonite, commonly observed in the Allende CAIs, are absent; the Fe‐bearing grossular + Fe‐bearing Al‐diopside ± Fe,Mg‐spinel, Fe‐bearing grossular + Fe,Mg‐olivine ± Fe,Mg‐spinel, and Ca,Na‐plagioclase + Fe‐bearing Al‐diopside + Fe‐bearing grossular assemblages are present instead. These mineral assemblages are often crosscut by veins of Fe‐bearing Al‐diopside, Fe,Mg‐olivine, Fe,Mg‐spinel, and Ca,Na‐plagioclase. The coarse‐grained secondary grossular and Al‐diopside often show multilayered chemical zoning with distinct compositional boundaries between the layers; the abundances of Fe and Ti typically increase toward the grain edges. (iv) Sodium‐rich secondary minerals, nepheline and sodalite, commonly observed in the peripheral portions of the Allende CAIs, are absent; Ca,Na‐plagioclase is present instead. We conclude that coarse‐grained igneous CAIs from CK3.7–3.8 s and Allende experienced an open‐system multistage metasomatic alteration in the presence of an aqueous solution–infiltration metasomatism. This process resulted in localized mobilization of all major rock‐forming elements: Si, Ca, Al, Ti, Mg, Fe, Mn, Na, K, and Cl. The metasomatic alteration of CK CAIs is more advanced and occurred under higher temperature and higher oxygen fugacity than that of the Allende CAIs.

Formation and evolution of carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu: Direct evidence from returned samples

Samples of the carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu were brought to Earth by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. We analyzed 17 Ryugu samples measuring 1 to 8 millimeters. Carbon dioxide–bearing water inclusions are present within a pyrrhotite crystal, indicating that Ryugu’s parent asteroid formed in the outer Solar System. The samples contain low abundances of materials that formed at high temperatures, such as chondrules and calcium- and aluminum-rich inclusions. The samples are rich in phyllosilicates and carbonates, which formed through aqueous alteration reactions at low temperature, high pH, and water/rock ratios of <1 (by mass). Less altered fragments contain olivine, pyroxene, amorphous silicates, calcite, and phosphide. Numerical simulations, based on the mineralogical and physical properties of the samples, indicate that Ryugu’s parent body formed ~2 million years after the beginning of Solar System formation.

Using multimodal X-ray computed tomography to advance 3D petrography: A non-destructive investigation of olivine inside a carbonaceous chondrite

Rocks form in three dimensions through time and studying them provides information from inside dynamic systems we cannot otherwise observe. Yet how we typically access the interior of the rocks themselves to gain that information may limit our understanding and influence how we reconstruct the processes that formed them. Here, we demonstrate combined non-destructive 3D X-ray imaging techniques that produce quantitative densitometric and crystallographic maps of entire individual grains inside a rock. Olivine grains throughout a sample of the carbonaceous chondrite Northwest Africa (NWA) 11346 were each characterized by size, shape, composition, zoning intensity, and crystallographic orientation. The addition of 3D crystallographic mapping to calibrated 3D densitometric analysis—used to calculate chemical composition—demonstrates a fully non-destructive petrographic method and provides unique insight. For instance, in our case, using crystallographic data to delineate individual grains and then measuring the 3D size, shape, and composition of each distinguishes variably reset relict grains from those later crystallized after a melting event. Intersection in a 2D slice could not have led to this interpretation because the integration of three-dimensional size, rounding, composition, location, and crystallographic orientation measured from each grain forms the key patterns. Multimodal laboratory X-ray imaging has strong potential to advance 3D petrography.

Characterization of carbonaceous aerosols during TRACER-CAT

Absorbing aerosols (AA) have an important impact on the global radiation budget and cloud properties. The composition and properties of AA can vary substantially throughout the atmosphere, depending on the particle source and the influence of chemical aging. Uncertainties associated with the radiative effects of AA remain substantial. A key contributor to this uncertainty is understanding the extent to which coatings in general, and water uptake especially, alters absorption by AA particles and how this depends on particle composition. We deployed new and existing experimental tools during the Tracking Aerosol Convection Interactions Experiment (TRACER) campaign in Houston, TX as part of the Carbonaceous Aerosols Thrust (CAT) to provide detailed characterization of aerosol optical, chemical, and physical properties. Our TRACER-CAT measurements complemented and expanded on the planned TRACER instrumentation, allowing for more detailed characterization of aerosol properties of relevance to cloud development (a core focus of TRACER), such as the composition of particles that can act as cloud condensation nuclei, than would otherwise be available. Our measurements have allowed for assessment of the relationship(s) between AA optical properties (with a focus on absorption) and the chemical and physical characteristics (including the mixing state of black carbon (BC) containing particles). These field observations occurred in collaboration with Los Alamos National Laboratory in summer 2022 during the TRACER intensive operating period. The instrumentation we co-deployed provided for measurement of (i) multi-wavelength dry aerosol absorption, scattering, and extinction, (ii) the size-dependent composition and abundance of sub-micron aerosol, differentiating between those particles that do and do not contain BC, (iii) BC-specific concentrations and size distributions, (iv) particle size, and (v) the first field measurements at an ARM site of the influence of RH on multi-wavelength absorption by ambient AA. We have leveraged the natural variability of the atmosphere and of aerosol sources in the Houston region to (i) specifically disentangle contributions to light absorption from BC, absorbing organic carbon (brown carbon), and coatings on BC, (ii) characterize the mixing state of BC and assess the factors that give rise to compositional differences between BC-containing and BC-free aerosol, and (iii) establish how water uptake influences absorption and how any such effect depends on particle composition and BC mixing state. Overall, our study contributed to the mission of the Atmospheric System Research program in multiple ways. Through the deployment of complementary, advanced instrumentation for characterization of a wide range of aerosol properties our work helped to maximize the scientific impact of the TRACER campaign. Our work also allowed for development of new insights into the relationship(s) between aerosol composition, hygroscopicity, and the mixing state of BC with aerosol optical properties. Through this, our work has provided knowledge that can improve understanding and model representation of aerosol processes as they affect the Earth’s radiation budget.

Constraints on Chondrule Generation, Disk Dynamics, and Asteroid Accretion from the Compositions of Carbonaceous Meteorites

The elemental and isotopic compositions of meteorites are expected to reflect several key processes that occurred in the early solar system, including the migration of gas and dust throughout the protoplanetary disk, the formation of chondrules, and the accretion of the first planetary bodies. However, the specific origins of the various compositions measured among these rocks are currently poorly constrained, limiting our understanding of these processes. Here, we use previously measured elemental and isotopic compositions of chondrites and iron meteorites to identify that carbonaceous (CC) meteorites are mixtures of noncarbonaceous (NC) material, calcium–aluminum-rich inclusion (CAI) material, and CI (Ivuna-like) material, in varying proportions. These trends indicate that chondrules in CO (Ornans-like), CM (Mighei-like), CV (Vigarano-like), and TL (Tagish Lake) chondrites share near-identical average proportions of CI material, arguing that they were generated through the remelting of preexisting NC chondrules all in the same disk environment. Because this proportion likely evolved over space and time throughout the disk, this similarity argues that these chondrules originate from a restricted spatial region and time interval, favoring their generation through a localized event. Moreover, the compositions of CR (Renazzo-like) chondrites indicate that their constituents formed through mechanisms different from those in CO, CM, CV, and TL chondrites. Furthermore, the recovered proportions of CI material in CC iron meteorites and chondrites together also argue for evolution in either the predominant direction of dust and gas motion in the first ~10 au of the disk or the radial distance of planetesimal accretion throughout the CC reservoir.
