Gauge-invariant perturbation expansion in powers of electric charge for the density-of-states of a network model for charged-particle motion in a uniform background magnetic flux density

An explicitly gauge-invariant expansion in powers of e/$\hbar$ times the magnetic flux density is formally obtained for the density of states [as characterized by the trace of the resolvent $\hat{G}$ = (ω-$\hat{ℎ}$)-1] of a charged particle moving on a Hermitian quantum network that is embedded in a Euclidean background that supports a uniform magnetic flux density. The explicit expressions, given here up to third order in the flux density, are also valid for the “local trace” (the trace of $\hat{P}_i\hat{G}$ , where $\hat{P}_i$ is the projector on a network node) and do not appear to have been previously given.

Response to “Comment on ‘Modification of Lie's transform perturbation theory for charged particle motion in a magnetic field’” [Phys. Plasmas 30 , 104701 (2023)]

Dr. Brizard's comment on my work is based on a conceived procedure that does not come from my work. The defense of his claim that the modification of the so-called standard Lie's transform theory is unnecessary is also unsupported. This response reveals in detail the inconsistency issues in the so-called standard Lie's transform theory by analyzing both its results and root causes. The problem in the so-called standard Lie's transform theory is beyond the issue to take into account the ordering difference between the guiding center motion and gyromotion. Here, the inconsistent commutation of derivative and limit causes another issue. In addition, the so-called standard Lie's transform formulation leads to an unnecessarily lengthy and tedious derivation process for a one or two page task under the singular (or renormalized) formalism described in my paper.

Adiabatic Hamiltonian of charged particle motion in a dipole field

The Hamiltonian for a dipole field is developed, and the result is expressed by an analytic approximation accurate to within about 1%. This allows extension of results derived for equatorial particles to particles with arbitrary pitch angles; in particular, it makes available even in the presence of electric fields orthogonal to the magnetic field a function K that is preserved by the bounce-averaged motion. This function provides at once the equations of drift paths in (alpha, beta) or of their projections onto the equatorial plane; the derivation of a pacing function that times the progress of particles along such drift paths is also described.

Adiabatic charged particle motion in rapidly rotating magnetospheres

Some aspects of adiabatic drift theory are investigated in the regime where the E x B drift velocity is comparable with or larger than the gyro velocity. Particles undergo five drifts in addition to the E x B gradient, and line curvature drifts have three more terms in the parallel equation of motion. The case of the rapidly rotating rigid magnetic field configuration is found to be an exception due to the corotating particle with a nearly periodic motion. The guiding center drift velocity and parallel differential equation of motion are obtained, and the drift velocity in the rotating frame is found to consist of the expected field gradient and line curvature drift, plus centrifugal and coriolis force induced drifts. It is shown that the second invariant is conserved in the rotating frame by the four drifts, so that a particle slowly drifts around on its drift shell and returns to its original field line. Thus, there is no long term energy change, and any energy change is periodic on the bounce and drift time scale.

Motion of charged particles normal to an irregular magnetic field

The motion is analyzed of charged particles in a fluctuating magnetic field which varies only in directions normal to its mean direction, such as that which would be generated by an ensemble of magnetosonic waves propagating normal to an ambient magnetic field. The appropriate generalization of gradient-drift motion is derived in terms of the power spectrum of the magnetic fluctuations, and an effective spatial diffusion coefficient is obtained. Several special cases are considered, including a Gaussian power spectrum, a power-law spectrum with a cutoff, and a general power-law spectrum. A possible magnitude is calculated for the spatial diffusion coefficient of the solar wind.
