Nonadiabatic Dynamics in a Continuous Circularly Polarized Laser Field with Floquet Phase-Space Surface Hopping

Non-adiabatic chemical reactions involving continuous circularly polarized light (cw CPL) have not attracted as much attention as dynamics in unpolarized/linearly polarized light. However, including circularly (in contrast to linearly) polarized light allows one to effectively introduce a complex-valued time-dependent Hamiltonian, which offers a new path for control or exploration through the introduction of Berry forces. Here, we investigate several inexpensive semiclassical approaches for modeling such nonadiabatic dynamics in the presence of a time-dependent complex-valued Hamiltonian, beginning with a straightforward instantaneous adiabatic fewest-switches surface hopping (IA-FSSH) approach (where the electronic states depend on position and time), continuing to a standard Floquet fewest switches surface hopping (F-FSSH) approach (where the electronic states depend on position and frequency), and ending with an exotic Floquet phase-space surface hopping (F-PSSH) approach (wherethe electronic states depend on position, frequency, and momentum). Using a set of model systems with time-dependent complex-valued Hamiltonians, we show that the Floquet phase- space adiabats are the optimal choice of basis as far as accounting for Berry phase effects and delivering accuracy. Furthermore, the F-PSSH algorithm sets the stage for modeling nonadiabatic dynamics under strong externally pumped circular polarization in the future.

Prospects for detecting a net photon circular polarization produced by decaying dark matter

If dark matter interactions with Standard Model particles are CP-violating, then dark matter annihilation/decay can produce photons with a net circular polarization. We consider the prospects for experimentally detecting evidence for such a circular polarization. We identify optimal models for dark matter interactions with the Standard Model, from the point of view of detectability of the net polarization, for the case of either symmetric or asymmetric dark matter. Furthermore, we find that, for symmetric dark matter, evidence for net polarization could be found by a search of the Galactic Center by an instrument sensitive to circular polarization with an efficiency-weighted exposure of at least 50000 cm 2 yr, provided the systematic detector uncertainties are constrained at the 1% level. Better sensitivity can be obtained in the case of asymmetric dark matter. We report on the prospects for achieving the needed level of performance using possible detector technologies.

Investigation of a Spin Transition in a LaCoO 3 Single Crystal by the Method of X-Ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism at the Cobalt K - and L 2,3 -Edges

Here, the spin transitions of cobalt ions in LaCoO 3 single crystals have been studied by the method of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the K - and L 2,3 -edges of Co 3+ ions. The orbital momentum of cobalt ions obtained for the K -edge at the 3d level in the region of the spin transition in the temperature range from 25 to 120 K increases by a factor of approximately 1.6, whereas the slope of the magnetization curve value in the same temperature range and magnetic field increases by a factor of more than 10. XMCD experiments at the cobalt L 2,3 )-edges demonstrate gradual growth of the ratio of the orbital momentum to the spin one L/S from 0.48 to 0.53 in the temperature range from 60 K to 120 K.

Evaluating Material Circular Efficacy of Waste-Management Scenarios Using PV ICE (PV in the Circular Economy) Tool

To meet the nation’s clean energy needs, it is projected that at least 1 TW of solar photovoltaics (PV) will be installed by 2050. To make this transition to solar energy sustainable, planning for a circular economy that maximizes reuse, repair, and recycle is crucial. The objective of this poster is to evaluate the circular efficacy of waste-management interventions, while considering social factors, using PV ICE, a modeling tool that quantifies future mass flows of PV based on dynamic, real-world data.

Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism as operando probes of complex oxide electrolyte gate transistors

Electrolyte-based transistors utilizing ionic liquids/gels have been highly successful in the study of charge-density-controlled phenomena, particularly in oxides. Experimental probes beyond transport have played a significant role, despite challenges in their application in electric double-layer transistors. Here, we demonstrate the application of synchrotron soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) as operando probes of the charge state and magnetism in ion-gel-gated ferromagnetic perovskite films. Electrochemical response via oxygen vacancies at positive gate bias in LaAlO 3 (001)/La 0.5 Sr 0.5 CoO 3-δ is used as a test case. XAS/XMCD measurements of 4–25 unit-cell-thick films first probe the evolution of hole doping (from the O K-edge pre-peak) and ferromagnetism (at the Co L-edges), to establish a baseline. Operando soft XAS/XMCD of electrolyte-gated films is then demonstrated, using optimized spin-coated gels with a thickness of ~1 μm and a specific composition. The application of gate voltages up to +4 V is shown to dramatically suppress the O K-edge XAS pre-peak intensity and Co L-edge XMCD, thus enabling the Co valence and ferromagnetism to be tracked upon gate-induced reduction. Soft XAS and XMCD, with appropriate electrolyte design, are thus established to be viable for the operando characterization of electrolyte-gated oxides.

Computational Evaluation of Thermal Response of Open-Cell Foam With Circular Pore (Computional Evaluation of Thermal Response of Open-Cell Foam with Circular Pore)

The evaluation of effective material properties in heterogeneous materials (e.g., composites or multicomponent structures) critically relevant to a wide spectrum of applications, including nuclear power, electronic packaging, flame retardants, hypersonics, and gas turbine power. The work described in this paper is centered around the numerical assessment of the thermal behavior of porous materials obtained from finite element thermal modeling and simulation. Here, two-dimensional, steady state analyses were performed on unit cells with centered, circular pores using a second order accurate Galerkin finite element method (FEM). The effective thermal conductivities of the porous systems were examined, encompassing a range of porosities from 4.9% to 60.1%. The geometries of the models were generated based on ordered circular pores for each modeled porosity level. The system response quantity (SRQ) under investigation was the dimensionless effective thermal conductivity across the unit cell. The dimensionless effective thermal conductivity was compared across all simulated cases, producing a trend between porosity and effective thermal conductivity. In the presented investigation, the method of manufactured solutions (MMS) was used to perform code verification, and the grid convergence index (GCI) was employed to estimate discretization uncertainty as solution verification. Code verification concluded an approximately second order accurate Galerkin FEM solver. It was found that the introduction of porosity to the unit cell material structure reduces effective thermal conductivity, as anticipated. Numerical results obtained in this study are compared to an analytical solution and to a sample of empirical data.

Circularly polarized conical patterns from circular microstrip antennas

A method is presented for generating circularly polarized conical patterns from circular microstrip antennas. These antennas are excited at higher order modes and require different feed arrangements for different mode excitations. It is determined that the peak direction of the conical pattern can be varied over a wide angular range. Modal expansion technique is employed to calculate the radiation patterns of these antennas.

A simple circular-polarized antenna: Circular waveguide horn coated with lossy magnetic material

A circular waveguide horn coated with a lossy material in its interior wall can be used as an alternative to a corrugated waveguide for radiating a circularly polarized (CP) field. To achieve good CP radiation, the diameter of the structure must be larger than the free-space wavelength, and the coating material must be sufficiently lossy and magnetic. This device is cheaper and lighter in weight than the corrugated one.

Near-circularly polarized isolated attosecond pulse generation from coherent superposition state by a circularly polarized laser field

We theoretically investigate high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from a coherent superposition state of hydrogen atom in a circularly polarized (CP) laser field. The results show that, driven by the CP field, HHG from the coherent superposition state is enhanced by 4 to 5 orders of magnitude compared to that from the ground state. The enhanced intensity is comparable to that of the ground state in a linearly polarized laser field. Based on the classical and quantum analyses, we demonstrate that HHG in the CP laser field mainly arises from the recombination of electrons ionized at non-zero initial positions. The enhancement of HHG from the coherent superposition state is due to the higher ionization rate and also the larger probability density of electrons located far from the nucleus of the involved excited state. The obtained harmonic spectra support the generation of intense isolated attosecond pulses (IAPs) with the ellipticity as high as 0.93. Moreover, we show that the generation of IAPs with large ellipticity is robust against the variation of the carrier envelope phase (CEP) of the laser field. Our results provide a new route toward generating near-CP IAPs, which will be beneficial for ultrafast detection of chiral-sensitive light-matter interactions.

Spiral bevel and circular arc helical gears: Tooth contact analysis and the effect of misalignment on circular arc helical gears

A computer aided method for tooth contact analysis was developed and applied. Optimal machine-tool settings for spiral bevel gears are proposed and when applied indicated that kinematic errors can be minimized while maintaining a desirable bearing contact. The effect of misalignment for circular arc helical gears was investigated and the results indicted that directed pinion refinishing can compensate the kinematic errors due to misalignment.
