Phased array antenna matching: Simulation and optimization of a planar phased array of circular waveguide elements

A computerized simulation of a planar phased array of circular waveguide elements is reported using mutual coupling and wide angle impedance matching in phased arrays. Special emphasis is given to circular polarization. The aforementioned computer program has as variable inputs: frequency, polarization, grid geometry, element size, dielectric waveguide fill, dielectric plugs in the waveguide for impedance matching, and dielectric sheets covering the array surface for the purpose of wide angle impedance matching. Parameter combinations are found which produce reflection peaks interior to grating lobes, while dielectric cover sheets are successfully employed to extend the usable scan range of a phased array. The most exciting results came from the application of computer aided optimization techniques to the design of this type of array.

Comprehensive silicon solar cell computer modeling

The development of an efficient, comprehensive Si solar cell modeling program that has the capability of simulation accuracy of 5 percent or less is examined. A general investigation of computerized simulation is provided. Computer simulation programs are subdivided into a number of major tasks: (1) analytical method used to represent the physical system; (2) phenomena submodels that comprise the simulation of the system; (3) coding of the analysis and the phenomena submodels; (4) coding scheme that results in efficient use of the CPU so that CPU costs are low; and (5) modularized simulation program with respect to structures that may be analyzed, addition and/or modification of phenomena submodels as new experimental data become available, and the addition of other photovoltaic materials.

The role of computerized modeling and simulation in the development of life support system technologies

Computerized modeling and simulation (CMAS) is a tool that can greatly reduce both the time and cost of technology development. CMAS refers to computer methods for correlating, storing, and retrieving property data for chemical species and for solving the phenomenological equations of physical/chemical processes. Furthermore, process conditions based on properties of materials, mass, and energy balances; equipment sizing based on rate processes; and the governing equations for unit operations can be determined using CMAS. CMAS systems can be used to evaluate an LSS process with minimal requirements for laboratory experimentation. A CMAS model is presented for a vapor compression distillation system(VCD) for reclaiming water from urine.

Space shuttle orbiter digital data processing system timing sensitivity analysis OFT ascent phase

Dynamic loads were investigated to provide simulation and analysis of the space shuttle orbiter digital data processing system (DDPS). Segments of the ascent test (OFT) configuration were modeled utilizing the information management system interpretive model (IMSIM) in a computerized simulation modeling of the OFT hardware and software workload. System requirements for simulation of the OFT configuration were defined, and sensitivity analyses determined areas of potential data flow problems in DDPS operation. Based on the defined system requirements and these sensitivity analyses, a test design was developed for adapting, parameterizing, and executing IMSIM, using varying load and stress conditions for model execution. Analyses of the computer simulation runs are documented, including results, conclusions, and recommendations for DDPS improvements.

Digital data processing system dynamic loading analysis

Simulation and analysis of the Space Shuttle Orbiter Digital Data Processing System (DDPS) are reported. The mated flight and postseparation flight phases of the space shuttle's approach and landing test configuration were modeled utilizing the Information Management System Interpretative Model (IMSIM) in a computerized simulation modeling of the ALT hardware, software, and workload. System requirements simulated for the ALT configuration were defined. Sensitivity analyses determined areas of potential data flow problems in DDPS operation. Based on the defined system requirements and the sensitivity analyses, a test design is described for adapting, parameterizing, and executing the IMSIM. Varying load and stress conditions for the model execution are given. The analyses of the computer simulation runs were documented as results, conclusions, and recommendations for DDPS improvements.

Control algorithms and computer simulation of a stand-alone photovoltaic village power system

At Stand-Alone Photovoltaic (SAPV) power systems increase in size and load diversity, the design and simulation of control subsystems takes on added importance. These SAPV systems represent 'mini utilities' with commensurate controls requirements, albeit with the added complexity of the energy source (sunlight received) being an uncontrollable variable. This paper briefly describes a stand-alone photovoltaic power/load system computerized simulation model. The model was tested against operational data from the Schuchuli stand-alone village photovoltaic system and has achieved acceptable levels of simulation accuracy. The model can be used to simulate system designs although with probable battery modification.

SPS phase control system performance via analytical simulation

A solar power satellite transmission system which incorporates automatic beam forming, steering, and phase control is discussed. The phase control concept centers around the notation of an active retrodirective phased array as a means of pointing the beam to the appropriate spot on Earth. The transmitting antenna (spacetenna) directs the high power beam so that it focuses on the ground-based receiving antenna (rectenna). A combination of analysis and computerized simulation was conducted to determine the far field performance of the reference distribution system, and the beam forming and microwave power generating systems.
