AlphaBuilding ResCommunity: A multi-agent virtual testbed for community-level load coordination

Training and validating algorithms in a simulation testbed can accelerate research and applications of optimal control of residential loads to improve energy flexibility and grid resilience. We developed an open-source simulation environment, AlphaBuilding ResCommunity, that can be used to train and validate algorithms to control a single thermostatically controlled load (TCL) or coordinate a group of TCLs. We used reduced-order models to simulate the thermodynamics of TCLs, and the parameter values were determined from the connected smart thermostat data of real households. The environment was built upon the standardized OpenAI Gym interface. Ancillary functions, such as retrieving the parameters and weather forecasts, are provided to facilitate control strategies that require predictive information. Compared with existing efforts, AlphaBuilding ResCommunity has three advantages: (1) more realistic model settings because the parameter values are identified from actual household operating data, and modelling and measurement uncertainty are considered; (2) passive thermal storage control; and (3) ease of use due to a simple software dependency and standardized interface. We demonstrated the applications of the environment by implementing a Kalman Filter and Model Predictive Control on a single TCL and a Priority-Stack-Based Control and Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers to coordinate multiple TCLs for load tracking.

Metal-Coordinated Phthalocyanines as Platform Molecules for Understanding Isolated Metal Sites in the Electrochemical Reduction of CO 2

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) of non-precious transition metals (TMs) often show unique electrochemical performance, including the electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). However, the inhomogeneity in their structures makes it difficult to directly compare SACs of different TM for their CO 2 RR activity, selectivity, and reaction mechanisms. Here, the comparison of isolated TMs (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) is systematically investigated using a series of crystalline molecular catalysts, namely TM-coordinated phthalocyanines (TMPcs), to directly compare the intrinsic role of the TMs with identical local coordination environments on the CO 2 RR performance. The combined experimental measurements, in situ characterization, and density functional theory calculations of TM-Pc catalysts reveal a TM dependent CO 2 RR activity and selectivity, with the free energy difference of ΔG(*HOCO) - ΔG(*CO) being identified as a descriptor for predicting the CO 2 RR performance.

Volume III. DUNE far detector technical coordination

The preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early universe, the dynamics of the supernovae that produced the heavy elements necessary for life, and whether protons eventually decay -- these mysteries at the forefront of particle physics and astrophysics are key to understanding the early evolution of our universe, its current state, and its eventual fate. The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is an international world-class experiment dedicated to addressing these questions as it searches for leptonic charge-parity symmetry violation, stands ready to capture supernova neutrino bursts, and seeks to observe nucleon decay as a signature of a grand unified theory underlying the standard model. The DUNE far detector technical design report (TDR) describes the DUNE physics program and the technical designs of the single- and dual-phase DUNE liquid argon TPC far detector modules. Volume III of this TDR describes how the activities required to design, construct, fabricate, install, and commission the DUNE far detector modules are organized and managed. This volume details the organizational structures that will carry out and/or oversee the planned far detector activities safely, successfully, on time, and on budget. It presents overviews of the facilities, supporting infrastructure, and detectors for context, and it outlines the project-related functions and methodologies used by the DUNE technical coordination organization, focusing on the areas of integration engineering, technical reviews, quality assurance and control, and safety oversight. Because of its more advanced stage of development, functional examples presented in this volume focus primarily on the single-phase (SP) detector module.

EMS and DMS Integration of the Coordinative Real-time Sub-Transmission Volt-Var Control Tool under High DER Penetration

This paper proposes an applicable approach to deploy the Coordinative Real-time Sub-Transmission Volt-Var Control Tool (CReST-VCT), and a holistic system integration framework considering both the energy management system (EMS) and distribution system management system (DMS). This provides an architectural basis and can serve as the implementation guideline of CReST-VCT and other advanced grid support tools, to co-optimize the operation benefits of DERs and assets in both transmission and distribution networks. Potential communication protocols for different physical domains of a real application is included. Performance and security issues are also discussed, along with specific considerations for field deployment. Finally, the paper presents a viable pathway for CReST-VCT and other advanced grid support tools, which could be integrated in an open-source standardized-based platform that supports distribution utilities.

Discrimination of xylene isomers in a stacked coordination polymer

The separation and purification of xylene isomers is an industrially important but challenging process. Developing highly efficient adsorbents is crucial for the implementation of simulated moving bed technology for industrial separation of these isomers. Herein, we report a stacked one-dimensional coordination polymer {[Mn(dhbq)(H 2 O) 2 ], H 2 dhbq = 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone} that exhibits an ideal molecular recognition and sieving of xylene isomers. Its distinct temperature-adsorbate–dependent adsorption behavior enables full separation of p -, m -, and o -xylene isomers in both vapor and liquid phases. The delicate stimuli-responsive swelling of the structure imparts this porous material with exceptionally high flexibility and stability, well-balanced adsorption capacity, high selectivity, and fast kinetics at conditions mimicking industrial settings. This study may offer an alternative approach for energy-efficient and adsorption-based industrial xylene separation and purification processes.

Computational Spectroscopy of the Cr–Cr Bond in Coordination Complexes

In this work, we report the accurate computational vibrational analysis of the Cr–Cr bond in dichromium complexes using second-order multireference complete active space methods (CASPT2), allowing direct comparison with experimental spectroscopic data both to facilitate interpreting the low-energy region of the spectra and to provide insights into the nature of the bonds themselves. Recent technological development by the authors has realized such computation for the first time. Accurate simulation of the vibrational structure of these compounds has been hampered by their notorious multiconfigurational electronic structure that yields bond distances that do not correlate with bond order. Some measured Cr–Cr vibrational stretching modes, ν(Cr 2 ), have suggested weaker bonding, even for so-called ultrashort Cr–Cr bonds, while others are in line with the bond distance. Here, we optimize geometries and compute ν(Cr 2 ) with CASPT2 for three well-characterized complexes, Cr 2 (O 2 CCH 3 ) 4 (H 2 O) 2 , Cr 2 (mhp) 4 , and Cr 2 (dmp) 4 . We obtain CASPT2 harmonic ν(Cr 2 ) modes in good agreement with experiment at 282 cm –1 for Cr 2 (mhp) 4 and 353 cm –1 for Cr 2 (dmp) 4 , compute 50 Cr and 54 Cr isotope shifts, and demonstrate that the use of the so-called IPEA shift leads to improved Cr–Cr distances. Additionally, normal mode sampling was used to estimate anharmonicity along ν(Cr 2 ), leading to an anharmonic mode of 272 cm –1 for Cr 2 (mhp) 4 and 333 cm –1 for Cr 2 (dmp) 4 .

Two Neptunium(III) Mellitate Coordination Polymers: Completing the Series Np–Cf of Trans-Uranic An(III) Mellitates

For this work, two neptunium(III) mellitates, 237 Np 2 (mell)(H 2 O) 9 ·1.5H 2 O (Np-1α) and 237 Np 2 (mell)(H 2 O) 8 ·2H 2 O (Np-1β), have been synthesized from 237 NpCl 4 (dme) 2 by reduction with KC 8 and subsequent reaction with an aqueous solution of mellitic acid (H 6 mell). Characterization by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy confirms that the neptunium is in its +3 oxidation state and both polymorphs are isostructural to the previously reported plutonium mellitates. Of the two morphologies, Np-1α is indefinitely stable in air, while Np-1β slowly oxidizes over several months. This is due to the change in the energy of the metal-ligand charge-transfer absorption exhibited by these compounds attributed to differing numbers of carboxylate bonds to Np(III), where in Np-1β the energy is low enough to result in spontaneous oxidation.
