A Feasible Approach for an Early Manned Lunar Landing. Part II: Detailed Report of Ad Hoc Task Group

This report, in two parts, presents a program development plan for attempting a first manned lunar landing in 1967. The two parts consist of a Summary Report and a Detailed Report representing the coordinated output of the Ad Hoc Task Group assigned to the study. The study was started in response to the request for such a study by the Associate Administrator in his memorandum of May 2, 1961 establishing the Ad Hoc Task Group. The purpose of the study was to take a first cut at the tasks associated with the design, development and construction of the equipment and facilities as well as the development of the crews, and to show the time phasing 6f these tasks. Included are the space sciences, life science and advanced technology tasks whose data and results are needed for designing and developing the systems required in carrying out the mission. The plan presented in the two reports does not presume to be a firm plan. Its basic purpose is, by choosing one feasible method, to size up the scope, schedule and cost of the job, discover the main problems, pacing items and major decisions and provide a threshold from which a firm and detailed project development plan can be jointly formulated by the various elements of NASA.

A holographic system that records front-surface detail of a scene moving at high velocity

A holographic technique that uses an elliptical orientation for the holographic arrangement is discussed. It is shown that the degree of image degradation is not only a function of exposure time but also of the system used. The form of the functional system dependence is given, as well as the results of several systems tested, which verify this dependence. It is further demonstrated that the important parameter is the total motion of the target. Using the experimentally determined resolution of front-surface detail from a target with a velocity of 17,546 centimeters per second, an upper limit on target velocity for resolution of front-surface detail for a given system can be predicted.

Modular space station detailed preliminary design. Volume 1: Sections 1 through 4.4

Detailed configuration and subsystems preliminary design data are presented for the modular space station concept. Each module comprising the initial space station is described in terms of its external and internal configuration, its functional responsibilities to the initial cluster, and its orbital build up sequence. Descriptions of the subsequent build up to the growth space station are also presented. Analytical and design techniques, tradeoff considerations, and depth of design detail are discussed for each subsystem. The subsystems include the following: structural/mechanical; crew habitability and protection; experiment support; electrical power; environmental control/life support; guidance, navigation, and control; propulsion; communications; data management; and onboard checkout subsystems. The interfaces between the station and other major elements of the program are summarized. The rational for a zero-gravity station, in lieu of one with artificial-gravity capability, is also summarized.

Detailed interpretation and analysis of selected corn blight watch data sets

A detailed interpretation and analysis of selected corn blight data set was undertaken in order to better define the present capabilities and limitations of agricultural remote multispectral sensing and automatic processing techniques and to establish the areas of investigation needing futher attention in the development of operational survey systems. While the emphasis of this effort was directed toward the detection of various corn blight levels, problems related to the more general task of crop identification were also investigated. Since the analog recognition computer (SPARC) was fully committed to the more routine aspects of processing and since the detailed interpretation and analysis required more in the way of quantitative information, the CDC 1604 digital computer was employed.

Detailed design of a 100-We multicell thermionic power supply.

Confirmation of the general trends of a previously reported parametric study of plutonia-fueled thermionic generators in a detailed 100-We generator design. The detailed design takes into account the additional weight of system-integration components and shows that design refinements of all aeroshell components are possible when a specific generator configuration is considered. An optimized 100-We thermionic power supply design is presented, reflecting a 0.98 reliability goal after five years of operation. The optimum multicell array consists of 28 isomite converters, each producing approximately 3.6 We at end-of-life. The optimum arrangement of converters in the aeroshell is a four-column, seven-row stacking configuration connected electrically as a two-column, 14-row array.

Study of the detail content of Apollo orbital photography

The results achieved during a study of the Detail Content of Apollo Orbital Photography are reported. The effect of residual motion smear or image reproduction processes upon the detail content of lunar surface imagery obtained from the orbiting command module are assessed. Data and conclusions obtained from the Apollo 8, 12, 14 and 15 missions are included. For the Apollo 8, 12 and 14 missions, the bracket-mounted Hasselblad camera had no mechanism internal to the camera for motion compensation. If the motion of the command module were left totally uncompensated, these photographs would exhibit a ground smear varying from 12 to 27 meters depending upon the focal length of the lens and the exposure time. During the photographic sequences motion compensation was attempted by firing the attitude control system of the spacecraft at a rate to compensate for the motion relative to the lunar surface. The residual smear occurring in selected frames of imagery was assessed using edge analyses methods to obtain and achieved modulation transfer function (MTF) which was compared to a baseline MTF.

Detailed geoid computations for GEOS-C altimeter experiment areas

The GEOS-C spacecraft is scheduled to carry onboard a radar altimeter for the purpose of measuring the geoid undulations in oceanic areas. An independently derived geoid map will provide a valuable complement to these experiments. A detailed gravimetric geoid is presented for the Atlantic and northeast Pacific Ocean areas based upon a combination of the Goddard Space Flight Center GEM-6 earth model and surface 1 deg x 1 deg gravity data. As part of this work a number of satellite derived gravity models were evaluated to establish the model which best represented the long wave length features of the geoid in the above mentioned area. Comparisons of the detailed geoid with the astrogeodetic data provided by the National Ocean Survey and dynamically derived tracking station heights indicate that the accuracy of this combined geoid is on the order of 2 meters or better where data was dense and 5 to 7 meters where data was less dense.

Some injector element detail effects on screech in hydrogen-oxygen rockets

An experimental investigation was conducted to learn more about how the specific details of a concentric tube injection element affect the screech characteristics of a hydrogen-oxygen rocket engine. The four variables investigated were (1) impingement angle, (2) oxidizer tube blunt base thickness, (3) oxidizer tube recess and extension, and (4) oxidizer tube-annulus concentricity. Tests were made using a 27.34-cm (10.77-in.) diameter heat sink combustor at nominally 300-psia chamber pressure. All of the test variables were investigated using a 157 element circular pattern injector. Additional oxidizer tube recess tests were made with a 421 element hexagonal pattern injector. Tests were conducted over the oxidant-fuel ratio range of 4 to 6. Stability evaluation for each configuration was made using the hydrogen temperature rating technique. Several element configurations were also cold flow tested using nitrogen and water as simulants. The element detail changes resulted in changes in hydrogen injector pressure drop even though the physical injection area was constant for all similar tests in both hot firing and cold flow tests. These changes in injector pressure drop produced changes in combustion stability. The data were correlated with a modified version of a previously reported injection area ratio correlation. By interpreting changes in injector pressure drop as changes in injector hydrogen flow resistance, the data were compared with a hydrogen flow response stability model and were found to be in agreement.

Study of the detail content of Apollo orbital photography

The development and application of image evaluation methods for assessing the detail content of Apollo orbital photography was demonstrated. Edge analysis using shadow to sunlight edges interior to craters was successfully used to evaluate the fine detail content of Apollo 15, 16, and 17 imagery. A method for evaluating tone quality was developed using a gain factor as a function of object contrast and average exposure level that can be related to object detectability.

Detailed gravimetric geoid computations in North America

A detailed gravimetric geoid has been computed for the Eastern United States and the Northwestern Atlantic Ocean by combining the Goddard Space Flight Center GEM-8 earth gravity model with the available 15 x 15 arcmin and 1 x 1 deg mean free air surface gravity observations. The short wavelength undulations were computed by applying Stokes' formula to the 15 x 15 arcmin and 1 x 1 deg surface data. The long wavelength undulations were provided by the GEM-8 model. The gravimetric geoid has been compared with Geoceiver derived and astrogeodetically determined geoid heights in the United States and the rms agreement is on the order of 1.5 meters. Excellent agreement in shape has been found between the detailed geoid and geoidal profiles derived from GEOS-III altimeter data in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean.

A detailed study of attached and separated compression corner flowfields in high Reynolds number supersonic flow

An experimental study has been carried out to detail the interaction of a compressible turbulent boundary layer with shock waves of varying strengths. The interaction was produced by two-dimensional compression corners of 8, 16, 20, and 24 deg angles. The incoming boundary layer had an edge Mach number of 2.85 and a Reynolds number of 1.7 million based on overall thickness. Detailed mean-flow and surface measurements are presented for the four corner angles. The 8 deg corner flow was found to be fully attached, while the 16 deg case was near incipient separation. Both the 20 deg and 24 deg corners produced significant flow separation regions. In the discussion of these results, emphasis is placed on the development of flowfield properties from attached to separated conditions. Comparisons made with a computational solution of the Navier-Stokes equations show good agreement when the corner flow is not separated.

Vapour phase details in the oscillatory combustion of propellants A porous plate analogue

A perforated porous plate burner is designed to scale up the vapor phase details in composite propellant combustion. A fuel vapor is passed through the pores and an oxidizer vapor is passed through the discrete perforations drilled in the plate. Discussion of the scale modeling of the vapor phase details in oscillatory combustion of composite propellants leads to the following conclusions: (1) the concept of a perforated porous plate analog for the composite propellant vapor phase combustion appears to be valid during oscillatory combustion as well; (2) the flame standoff distance can be conveniently determined with motion picture photography; (3) the flame standoff distance varies with the flow velocity during oscillatory combustion much the same way as during time-independent combustion; and (4) the overall structure of the combustion zone (flame) does not appear to vary too much from its time-independent structure during oscillatory combustion

NASA TLA workload analysis support. Volume 1: Detailed task scenarios for general aviation and metering and spacing studies

The techniques required to produce and validate six detailed task timeline scenarios for crew workload studies are described. Specific emphasis is given to: general aviation single pilot instrument flight rules operations in a high density traffic area; fixed path metering and spacing operations; and comparative workload operation between the forward and aft-flight decks of the NASA terminal control vehicle. The validation efforts also provide a cursory examination of the resultant demand workload based on the operating procedures depicted in the detailed task scenarios.

Forbidden lines of np/q/ ions. I - Detailed balance and line intensity ratios

The detailed balance equations are solved in the ground state terms of 37 ions of C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S and Fe; atomic data for 235 transitions of these ions are tabulated, and 14 line ratios of q = 2,4 ions and eight line ratios of q = 3 ions are graphed. Forbidden emission lines of these ions are in the far and near UV, visible, and near and far IR regions of the spectrum. In addition, detailed calculations of the relative populations of the levels of the ground state are presented as a function of temperature and density.

Benefits of detailed models of muscle activation and mechanics

Recent biophysical and physiological studies identified some of the detailed mechanisms involved in excitation-contraction coupling, muscle contraction, and deactivation. Mathematical models incorporating these mechanisms allow independent estimates of key parameters, direct interplay between basic muscle research and the study of motor control, and realistic model behaviors, some of which are not accessible to previous, simpler, models. The existence of previously unmodeled behaviors has important implications for strategies of motor control and identification of neural signals. New developments in the analysis of differential equations make the more detailed models feasible for simulation in realistic experimental situations.

NOSS Altimeter Detailed Algorithm specifications

The details of the algorithms and data sets required for satellite radar altimeter data processing are documented in a form suitable for (1) development of the benchmark software and (2) coding the operational software. The algorithms reported in detail are those established for altimeter processing. The algorithms which required some additional development before documenting for production were only scoped. The algorithms are divided into two levels of processing. The first level converts the data to engineering units and applies corrections for instrument variations. The second level provides geophysical measurements derived from altimeter parameters for oceanographic users.

SEPAC flight software detailed design specifications, volume 1

The detailed design specifications (as built) for the SEPAC Flight Software are defined. The design includes a description of the total software system and of each individual module within the system. The design specifications describe the decomposition of the software system into its major components. The system structure is expressed in the following forms: the control-flow hierarchy of the system, the data-flow structure of the system, the task hierarchy, the memory structure, and the software to hardware configuration mapping. The component design description includes details on the following elements: register conventions, module (subroutines) invocaton, module functions, interrupt servicing, data definitions, and database structure.

Using ecological zones to increase the detail of Landsat classifications

Changes in classification detail of forest species descriptions were made for Landsat data on 2.2 million acres in northwestern California. Because basic forest canopy structures may exhibit very similar E-M energy reflectance patterns in different environmental regions, classification labels based on Landsat spectral signatures alone become very generalized when mapping large heterogeneous ecological regions. By adding a seven ecological zone stratification, a 167% improvement in classification detail was made over the results achieved without it. The seven zone stratification is a less costly alternative to the inclusion of complex collateral information, such as terrain data and soil type, into the Landsat data base when making inventories of areas greater than 500,000 acres.
