Detection of a flaring low-energy gamma-ray source

We report the detection of a flaring gamma-ray source by the University of New Hampshire (UNH) balloon-borne coded aperture gamma-ray telescope (DGT) on 1984 October 2. The source was detected at the significance level of 7.2 sigma over the energy range 160-2000 keV. The intensity in the range (160-200) keV was 1.1 Crab. The best-fit position of the source is given by R.A. = 3h 25.8m and Decl. = 67 deg 653 min and is located in the constellation of Camelopardia. The source was visible within the Field of View (FOV) of the telescope for approximately = 2 hr and exhibited signs of flaring. The derived photon spectrum can be equally fitted by an optically thin bremsstrahlung distribution of kT approximately = 52 keV or a power law of the form, dN(E)/dE = 3.7 x 10(exp -6) (E/400)(exp -4.5) photons/sq cm/keV. We compare its spectral characteristics ad energy output to various types of fast X-ray transients. No measurable flux could be detected from CG 135+1, the COS B source which was in the FOV and therefore, we present 2 sigma upper flux limits on its spectral emission over the energy range 160 keV to 9.3 MeV.

Ethylene plays multiple nonprimary roles in modulating the gravitropic response in tomato

Ethylene is known to interact with auxin in regulating stem growth, and yet evidence for the role of ethylene in tropic responses is contradictory. Our analysis of four mutants of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) altered in their response to gravity, auxin, and/or ethylene revealed concentration-dependent modulation of shoot gravitropism by ethylene. Ethylene inhibitors reduce wild-type gravicurvature, and extremely low (0.0005-0.001 microliter L-1) ethylene concentrations can restore the reduced gravitropic response of the auxin-resistant dgt (diageotropica) mutant to wild-type levels. Slightly higher concentrations of ethylene inhibit the gravitropic response of all but the ethylene-insensitive nr (never-ripe) mutant. The gravitropic responses of nr and the constitutive-response mutant epi (epinastic) are slightly and significantly delayed, respectively, but otherwise normal. The reversal of shoot gravicurvature by red light in the lz-2 (lazy-2) mutant is not affected by ethylene. Taken together, these data indicate that, although ethylene does not play a primary role in the gravitropic response of tomato, low levels of ethylene are necessary for a full gravitropic response, and moderate levels of the hormone specifically inhibit gravicurvature in a manner different from ethylene inhibition of overall growth.

Seasonal Sulfur Redox Cycling in Two Constructed Wetlands with Insight on How They Age

Long-term metal remediation in wetland treatment systems (WTSs) involves facilitating dissimilatory sulfate reduction to produce sulfide and mineralize metals in deep sediments. We evaluated seasonal sulfur cycling in two constructed wetlands (Maintained WTS constructed in 2007, and the Unmaintained WTS constructed in 2000) on the Savannah River Site in Aiken, South Carolina, USA. Significant interactions in sulfide concentration were observed between sediment depth, season, and wetland (F = 4.64, df = 11, P = 3.28 × 10 − 5). In the Maintained WTS, dissimilatory sulfate reduction dominated the surface sediments during the warm season (0–2 cm depth, t=-2.66, P = 9.70 × 10 − 3), unlike the Unmaintained system. Sulfate concentrations in pore waters increased in the warm season (F = 7.84, df = 1, P = 6.50 × 10 − 3), contrary to expectations. Sulfur limitation in the Unmaintained WTS during the warm season correlated with increased sulfur assimilation in giant bulrush. Lower sulfide concentrations in surface sediments of the Unmaintained WTS illustrated aging effects. The Maintained WTS shows potential for managing erosion, pH reduction, and sulfur limitation observed in the older Unmaintained WTS.

Automated Operations for Galileo Communications

After the Galileo High Gain Antenna (HGA) failed to deploy in 1991, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory(JPL) faced the challenge of implementing a science-rich mission with a Low-Gain Antenna (LGA), at data rates that were almost four orders of magnitude less than originally planned.
