Numerical studies of incompressible flow around delta and double-delta wings

The subject has been jointly investigated at NASA Langley Research Center and the Aerodynamisches Institut of the RWTH Aachen over a substantial period. The aim of this investigation has been to develop numerical integration procedures for the Navier-Stokes equations - particularly for incompressible three-dimensional viscous flows about simple and double delta wings - and to study the low speed flow behavior, with its complex vortex structures on the leeward side of the wing. The low speed flight regime poses unusual problems because high incidence flight conditions may, for example, encounter symmetric and asymmetric vortex breakdown. Because of the many difficulties to be expected in solving the problem, it was divided into two - analysis of the flow without vortex breakdown and analysis of the breakdown of isolated vortices. The major results obtained so far on the two topics are briefly described.

The delta S (delta R)-2 question: The pulse-length dependence of signal power for Fresnel scatter

It is proposed that the enhanced echoes from the atmosphere observed with a vertically pointing radar are due to reflections from horizontally stratified layers. The general case in which there are many closely spaced layers at random heights is called Fresnel scatter. The variation of received power with transmitter pulse length is examined for various models of Fresnel backscatter. It is shown that for the model most often used in previous work, the power is proportional to the pulse length, and not to the pulse length squared. However, for more general models a more complex pulse length dependence is found.

Miyun 232 MHz survey 1: Fields centered at: alpha:00(h)41(m), delta:41 deg 12 min and alpha: 07(h)00(m),delta:35 deg 00 min

A new meter-wave survey of sky region north of declination +30 deg is carried out with the Miyun 232 MHz Synthesis Radio Telescope (MSRT). The instrument, observation, and method of data reduction are briefly described. A preliminary catalog, first of a series, for two 8 deg. x 8 deg. regions centered respectively at 35 deg. is presented. On the average 4 - 5 sources per square degree are recorded with position accuracy of 5 sec. / S(Jy). BGPW scale is adopted for the flux density calibration. The accuracy of flux determination is limited by background fluctuation which is about 30 mJy. The catalog is complete for sources with flux larger than 0.25 Jy. The total number of sources listed in the paper amounts to 687. Several extended sources, sources with convex spectra, and one GPS source were found. Spectra of sources with flux larger than 0.5 Jy were also given.
