A performant energy-conserving particle reweighting method for Particle-in-Cell simulations

A new particle-based reweighting method is developed and demonstrated in the Aleph Particle-in-Cell with Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (PIC-DSMC) program. Novel splitting and merging algorithms ensure that modified particles maintain physically consistent positions and velocities. This method allows a single reweighting simulation to efficiently model plasma evolution over orders of magnitude variation in density, while accurately preserving energy distribution functions (EDFs). Demonstrations on electrostatic sheath and collisional rate dynamics show that reweighting simulations achieve accuracy comparable to fixed weight simulations with substantial computational time savings. This highly performant reweighting method is recommended for modeling plasma applications that require accurate resolution of EDFs or exhibit significant density variations in time or space.

Hedging direct simulation Monte Carlo bets via event splitting

We propose a new scheme for simulation of collisions with multiple possible outcomes in variable-weight DSMC computations. The scheme is applied to a 0-D ionization rate coefficient computation, and 1-D electrical breakdown simulation. We show that the scheme offers a significant (up to an order of magnitude) improvement in the level of stochastic noise over the usual acceptance-rejection algorithm, even when controlling for the slight additional computational costs. Furthermore, the benefits and performance of the scheme are analyzed in detail, and possible extensions are proposed.

Adjoint DSMC for nonlinear Boltzmann equation constrained optimization

Applications for kinetic equations such as optimal design and inverse problems often involve finding unknown parameters through gradient-based optimization algorithms. Based on the adjoint-state method, we derive two different frameworks for approximating the gradient of an objective functional constrained by the nonlinear Boltzmann equation. While the forward problem can be solved by the DSMC method, it is difficult to efficiently solve the high-dimensional continuous adjoint equation obtained by the “optimize-then-discretize” approach. This challenge motivates us to propose an adjoint DSMC method following the “discretize-then-optimize” approach for Boltzmann-constrained optimization. We also analyze the properties of the two frameworks and their connections. Here, several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate their accuracy and efficiency.

Efficient particle control in systems with large density gradients

Simulations of large density gradients present a number of challenges for direct Monte Carlo methods, since they lead to too few particles in dilute regions and prohibitively many in the dense regions. Here, we propose a particle control methodology that gives the user more control of the number of particles per cell by introducing a variable weight for each particle. The proposed scheme is based on the stochastic weighted particle method, requires only small modifications to DSMC, and exactly conserves mass, momentum, and energy. In validation tests of systems with density ratios of order 102-104, we observe 101-102 times less variance in the dilute region compared to a DSMC solution with the same number of system particles, while introducing a moderate additional computational cost.

A velocity space hybridization-based Boltzmann equation solver

In the present research, a new method for simulation of rarefied gas flows is proposed, a velocity-space hybrid of both a DSMC representation of particles and a discrete velocity quasi-particle representation of the distribution function. The hybridization scheme is discussed in detail, and is numerically verified for two test-cases: the BKW relaxation problem and a stationary Maxwellian distribution. It is demonstrated that such a velocity-space hybridization can provide computational benefits when compared to a pure discrete velocity method or pure DSMC approach, while retaining some of the more attractive properties of discrete velocity methods. Further possible improvements to the velocity-space hybrid approach are discussed.

Numerical analysis of gas exhaust in Wendelstein 7-X using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method

The present work is focused on a 3D numerical assessment of the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) particle exhaust. For all the numerical simulations the direct simulation Monte Carlo solver of the DIVGAS workflow, has been employed. The complex 3D geometry of the sub-divertor region includes the pumping gap panel, supporting structures, cooling pipes as well as the cryo-vacuum pump. All the considered flow simulations correspond to the Standard magnetic configuration of W7-X. The main conclusions, which can be extracted from the present numerical analysis could be summarized as follows; The coupling between EMC3-EIRENE and DIVGAS, which considers the fact that the incoming neutral particle flux at the sub-divertor is based on realistic plasma background, has been demonstrated. Three plasma scenarios have been considered, for which is clearly seen that by increasing the heating power, the neutral pressure as well as the resulting pumping efficiency is increased. The obtained numerical results of the neutral pressure in the sub-divertor lie within a more general scan matrix, which assumes a wider range of incoming particle flux, namely 10 19 –10 24 (s −1 ). It has been observed that, the sub-divertor neutral pressure is proportional to the incoming neutral particle flux, with the effective pumping speed to be a constant of proportionality. The influence of switching off the cryo-vacuum pump on the sub-divertor pressure is rather modest and a weak increase of the neutral pressure in the sub-divertor is expected. Correlations of the sub-divertor pressure with the total incoming particle flux as well as the individual pumped flux at each of the AEH and AEP sections have been deduced. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that the influence of the incoming neutral particle flux on the albedo coefficient at the AEH and AEP pumping gaps is rather weak. All the above numerical findings will actively support the optimization of the W7-X particle exhaust, in view of future experimental campaigns.
