Machine learning elastic constants of multi-component alloys

The present manuscript explores application of machine learning methods for determining elastic constants and other derived mechanical properties of multi-component alloys. Here, a number of machine learning models, including linear regression, neural network and random forest based models, are trained and tested on a dataset of binary alloys generated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and spanning over a large number of elemental species in the periodic table. Starting with a wide range of simple and easily accessible compositionally-averaged elemental features, a correlation-based feature selection strategy was used to systematically down-select a set of most relevant features towards the prediction of the elasticity tensor components. The true predictive performance and the associated uncertainties of the models were established by testing on unseen data and bootstrapping, respectively. A single and pair-wise feature partial dependence analysis was performed to visualize the average property trends in the multi-dimensional feature space in order to further understand the achieved predictive performance. The utility of the trained model is further demonstrated by obtaining sufficiently accurate yet highly efficient approximations for bulk modulus, Young’s modulus, shear modulus and Poisson’s ratio for alloys beyond the binary space (i.e., two-component alloys) on which the model was originally trained. More importantly, we test and validate the predictive performance of the developed model directly against the experimentally measured elastic constants of technologically relevant multi-component alloys (such as, Ni- and Ti-based alloys). Finally, utility of such a data-enabled route is demonstrated by predicting the possible range of various elastic properties for vast composition space available within the five component Ni-Cr-Fe-Mo-W alloy system in a high-throughput manner.

Polynomial Expressions for Estimating Elastic Constants From the Resonance of Circular Plates

Two approaches were taken to make convenient spread sheet calculations of elastic constants from resonance data and the tables in ASTM C1259 and E1876: polynomials were fit to the tables; and an automated spread sheet interpolation routine was generated. To compare the approaches, the resonant frequencies of circular plates made of glass, hardened maraging steel, alpha silicon carbide, silicon nitride, tungsten carbide, tape cast NiO-YSZ, and zinc selenide were measured. The elastic constants, as calculated via the polynomials and linear interpolation of the tabular data in ASTM C1259 and E1876, were found comparable for engineering purposes, with the differences typically being less than 0.5 percent. Calculation of additional v values at t/R between 0 and 0.2 would allow better curve fits. This is not necessary for common engineering purposes, however, it might benefit the testing of emerging thin structures such as fuel cell electrolytes, gas conversion membranes, and coatings when Poisson s ratio is less than 0.15 and high precision is needed.

Determination of the elastic constants of airplane tires

For determination of the elastic constants of airplane tires which are required for the numerical calculations of the shimmy properties of nose and tail wheels, deformation measurements were carried out on four different tires. For this purpose, the tires were loaded in each case with a normal load and then with a lateral force, a tangential force, and a moment. Moreover, the weight and the mass moment of inertia about a vertical axis were determined for the various tires.

Assessment of effective elastic constants of U-10Mo fuel: A multiscale modeling and homogenization study

The significant microstructural changes that U-Mo fuel undergoes during operation degrades its mechanical properties and structural integrity. Microstructural evolution entails the formation, evolution, and redistribution of porosity in conjunction with grain refinement. In the present paper, we employ numerical approaches to assess the impact of the various microstructural features—grains, nanoscale intragranular fission gas bubbles, and mesoscale intergranular voids—on the degradation of elastic constants. Phase-field microstructure models are combined with the asymptotic expansion homogenization technique in order to derive the effective elastic constants as a function of porosity and fission density. Here the results are verified and compared against theoretical bounds. Using this approach, elastic degradation in operating nuclear fuels can be quantified when the distributions of microstructural features are known.

Ultrasonic Measurement Of Elastic Constants Of Composites

Ultrasonic testing system yields data on elastic constants of matrix/fiber laminated composite material. Related to one described in "Ultrasonic System Measures Elastic Properties of Composites" (NPO-18729). Tests performed nondestructive, and involve access by ultrasonic probes to only one side of material specimen. In comparison with other available ultrasonic testing systems, this system relatively inexpensive, and based on testing technique that is simpler and rapidly yields more-accurate results.

Measurement of third-order elastic constants using thermal modulation of ultrasonic waves

Third-order elastic constants (TOEC) play an important role in nonlinear material characterization, but measurements of TOEC are laborious with large error margins. This Letter presents the equations of wave velocity changes caused by homogeneous temperature variation and uniaxial stress in isotropic media and the expression of TOEC in terms of thermally induced velocity change and thermal strain. TOEC of an aluminum sample were experimentally determined by measuring ultrasonic wave velocity changes in the uniaxial loading test and the thermal modulation test. Experimental results showed good agreement between the two test methods. Owing to the simple test setup and high measurement sensitivity, the thermal modulation test is a potential experimental method to determine TOEC and absolute acoustic nonlinearity parameters.

Constant-Elasticity-of-Substitution Simulation

Program simulates constant elasticity-of-substitution (CES) production function. CES function used by economic analysts to examine production costs as well as uncertainties in production. User provides such input parameters as price of labor, price of capital, and dispersion levels. CES minimizes expected cost to produce capital-uncertainty pair. By varying capital-value input, one obtains series of capital-uncertainty pairs. Capital-uncertainty pairs then used to generate several cost curves. CES program menu driven and features specific print menu for examining selected output curves. Program written in BASIC for interactive execution and implemented on IBM PC-series computer.

Elastic constants for superplastically formed/diffusion-bonded corrugated sandwich core

Formulas and associated graphs for evaluating the effective elastic constants for a superplastically formed/diffusion bonded (SPF/DB) corrugated sandwich core, are presented. A comparison of structural stiffnesses of the sandwich core and a honeycomb core under conditions of equal sandwich core density was made. The stiffness in the thickness direction of the optimum SPF/DB corrugated core (that is, triangular truss core) is lower than that of the honeycomb core, and that the former has higher transverse shear stiffness than the latter.

Assessment of effective elastic constants of U-10Mo fuel microstructures

Monolithic U-10Mo fuel undergoes significant microstructural changes during fuel burnup which degrades its mechanical properties. In this talk, we present results form a numerical method to assess the impact of the various microstructural features--grains, intragranular and intergranular Xe gas bubbles--on the elastic stiffness tensor. Using the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE), phase-field-based microstructures are combined with asymptotic expansion homogenization method to obtain effective elastic constants as a function of porosity and fission density. The results are verified and compared against analytical homogenization models. With this approach, elastic degradation in operating nuclear fuels can be quantified when the distributions of microstructural features are known from experimental characterization or rate-theory based models. We further develop an evolution model based on the virial equation of state for Xe gas and investigate the effect of growth and coalescence of the bubbles at the grain boundary faces and triple junctions.

Elastic constants for superplastically formed/diffusion-bonded sandwich structures

Formulae and the associated graphs are presented for contrasting the effective elastic constants for a superplastically formed/diffusion-bonded (SPF/DB) corrugated sandwich core and a honeycomb sandwich core. The results used in the comparison of the structural properties of the two types of sandwich cores are under conditions of equal sandwich density. It was found that the stiffness in the thickness direction of the optimum SPF/DB corrugated core (i.e., triangular truss core) was lower than that of the honeycomb core, and that the former had higher transverse shear stiffness than the latter.
