Revised Pioneer 10 absolute electron intensities in the inner Jovian magnetosphere

Improved techniques for the analysis of Pioneer 10 Jupiter encounter data are used to obtain significantly more reliable values for energetic electron (Ee less than 21 MeV) intensities within the inner magnetosphere. The revised absolute intensities of electrons in the energy range 0.06-21 MeV are less than previous estimates by factors as great as 10 for L not exceeding 6. Previously published intensities at greater radial distances for Ee less than 21 MeV and at all radial distances for Ee greater than 21 MeV are not affected by the revisions.

Auger electron intensity variations in oxygen-exposed large grain polycrystalline silver

Auger electron spectroscopic studies of the grains in oxygen-charged polycrystal-line silver show significant intensity variations as a function of crystallographic orientation. These intensity variations were observed by studies of the Auger images and line scans of the different grains (randomly selected) for each silver transition energy. The results can be attributed to the diffraction of the ejected Auger electrons and interpreted by corresponding changes in the electron mean-free path for inelastic scattering and by oxygen atom accumulation in the subsurface. The subsurface (second layer) octahedral sites increased in size because of surface relaxation and serve as a stable reservoir for the dissolved oxygen.

World maps of predicted electron intensities for the ITOS-A/NOAA-1 spacecraft

Maps of electron fluxes 10,000, 1 million, and 10 million particles/sq cm/sec are presented for an ITOS-A/NOAA-1 circular orbit, inclination of 79 deg, and altitude of 1463 km. The uncertainty in the flux values is about a factor of 3, and the error in contour plotting may be plus or minus 2 deg in latitude and plus or minus 3 deg in longitude. The fractional lifetime spent within the different intensity regions is graphed.

Narrow bursts of intense electron precipitation fluxes within inverted-V events

The rate of energy deposition into the atmosphere by inverted-V event precipitating electrons was computed, from the energy spectra measured by 30 passes of the AE-D satellite, in an attempt to identify small-scale structures within them which may bear a relation to the auroral arcs. High-deposition rate bursts with a duration of less than 5 sec were found inside inverted-V events, and an examination of 45 bursts showed most to have a latitudinal width of less than 0.2 deg, with occurrences over 65-75 deg invariant latitude during the evening hours. Optical emission intensities of 5577 A and 6300 A were inferred from the measured electron fluxes, showing the bursts to be capable of producing bright emissions. Results also suggest that the narrow burst electron fluxes have characteristics appropriate for the causing of discrete auroral arcs in the atmosphere.

Auger electron intensity variations in oxygen-charged silver

Auger intensity variations over an oxygen-charged polycrystalline silver surface have been observed by studies of Auger images and line scans of selected adjacent grains which were determined to be the (421) and (221) orientations. The observed contrast (M4.5VV transition) between the grains is produced by the variation in the detected Auger electrons caused by the different directions (interatomic direction) of forward focusing in each grain. The contrast produced by the Ag Auger electrons was found to be strongly dependent on the surface order of the grains, but that of the O Auger electrons was not, presumably because the atoms were randomly distributed throughout the Ag surface or subsurface. The contrast observed between the grains at the lower Auger energies (N1VV and N1N2.3V transitions) appeared to be produced by constructive interference from multiple scattering. The N1N2.3V electrons at 29 eV, for example, gave higher contrast than that of the N1VV transition at 78 eV.

Compton interaction of free electrons with intense low frequency radiation

Electron behavior in an intense low frequency radiation field, with induced Compton scattering as the primary mechanism of interaction, is investigated. Evolution of the electron energy spectrum is studied, and the equilibrium spectrum of relativistic electrons in a radiation field with high brightness temperature is found. The induced radiation pressure and heating rate of an electron gas are calculated. The direction of the induced pressure depends on the radiation spectrum. The form of spectrum, under the induced force can accelerate electrons to superrelativistic energies is found.
