Electronic states of Zn2 - Ab initio calculations of a prototype for Hg2

The electronic states of Zn2 are investigated by ab initio polarization configuration-interaction calculations. Molecular states dissociating to Zn(1S) + Zn(1S, 3P, 1P) and Zn(3P) + Zn(3P) are treated. Important effects from states arising from Zn(+)(25) + Zn(-)(2P) are found in the potential-energy curves and electronic-transition moments. A model calculation for Hg2 based on the Zn2 curves and including spin-orbit coupling leads to a new interpretation of the emission bands in Hg vapor.

Total Electron Scattering and Electronic State Excitations Cross Sections for O_2, CO, and CH_4

Available electron collision cross section data concerning total and elastic scattering, vibrationalexcitation, and ionization for O_2, CO, and CH_4 have been critically reviewed, and a set of crosssections for modeling of planetary atmospheric behavior is recommended. Utilizing theserecommended cross sections, we derived total electronic state excitation cross sections and upperlimits for dissociation cross sections, which in the case of CH_4 should very closely equal the actualdissociation cross section.

Efficient numerical simulation of electron states in quantum wires

A new algorithm is presented for the numerical simulation of electrons in a quantum wire as described by a two-dimensional eigenvalue problem for Schroedinger's equation coupled with Poisson's equation. Initially, the algorithm employs an underrelaxed fixed point iteration to generate an approximation which is reasonably close to the solution. Subsequently, this approximate solution is employed as an initial guess for a Jacobian-free implementation of an approximate Newton method. In this manner the nonlinearity in the model is dealt with effectively. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated in a set of numerical experiments which study the electron states on the cross section of a quantum wire structure based on III-V semiconductors at 4.2 and 77 K.

Ozone absorption spectroscopy in search of low-lying electronic states

A spectrometer capable of detecting ozone absorption features 9 orders of magnitude weaker than the Hartley band has been employed to investigate the molecule's near-infrared absorption spectrum. At this sensitivity a wealth of information on the low-lying electronically excited states often believed to play a role in atmospheric chemistry is available in the form of vibrational and rotational structure. We have analyzed these spectra using a combination of digital filtering and isotope substitution and find evidence for three electronically excited states below 1.5 eV. The lowest of these states is metastable, bound by approximately 0.1 eV and probably the (3)A2 rather than the (3)B2 state. Its adiabatic electronic energy is 1.24 +/- 0.01 eV, slightly above the dissociation energy of the ground state. Two higher states, at 1.29 +/- 0.03 and 1.48 +/- 0.03 eV are identified as the (3)B2 and the (3)B1, respectively. Combined with other recent theoretical and experimental data on the low-lying electronic states of ozone, these results imply that these are, in fact, the lowest three excited states; that is, there are no electronically excited states of ozone lying below the energy of O(3P) + O2((3)Sigma(-), v = 0). Some of the implications for atmospheric chemistry are considered.

Integral cross sections for the direct excitation of the A 3 (sigma) u +, B 3 (pi) g, W 3 (delta) u, B' 3 (sigma) u -, a' 1 (sigma) u -, a 1 (pi) g, w 1 (delta) u, and C 3 (pi) u electronic states in

Integral cross sections for electron impact excitation out of the ground state (X 1(sigma)g +) to the A 3(sigma)u +, B 3(pi)g, W 3(delta)u, B' 3(sigma)u -, a' 1(sigma)u -, a 1(pi)g, w 1(delta)u, and states in N2 are reported at incident energies ranging between 10 and 100 eV. These data have been derived by integrating differential cross sections previously reported by this group. New differential cross section measurements for the a 1(pi)g state at 200 eV are also presented to extend the range of the reported integral cross sections for this state, which is responsible for the emissions of the Lyman-Birge-Hopfield band system (a 1(pi)g (rightwards arrow) X 1(sigma)g +). The present results are compared and critically evaluated against existing cross sec In general, the present cross sections are smaller than previous results at low impact energies from threshold through the excitation function peak regions. These lower cross sections have potentially significant implications on our understanding of UV emissions in the atmospheres of Earth and Titan.

Vibrational intensity distributions for the various electronic states of O2/+/, N2/+/ and CO/+/ produced by photoionization

Vibrational intensity distributions obtained with many discrete emission lines are presented for all major electronic states of O2(+), N2(+) and CO(+) subjected to photoionization. The vibrational distributions are reported as a function of wavelength between 745 and 304 A. The data, provided by photoelectron spectroscopy with an electron energy analyzer of known luminosity, appear to be consistent with calculated Franck-Condon Factors. Evidence for autoionization in the data is also discussed.

Doping Effects on Multivalence States, Electronic Structure, and Optical Band Gap in LaCrO 3 under Varied Atmospheres: An Integrated Experimental and Density Functional Theory Study

Doping effects on the valence state, electronic structure, and optical band and the effects on electrical conductivity were studied on the doped lanthanum chromite (LaCrO 3 ) system. The specific compositions studied were La 1–x Ca x CrO 3 (LCCx), La 1–x Sr x CrO 3 (LSCx), and La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Cr 1–x Mn x O 3 (LSCMx) (0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.4). The powders were synthesized using a modified Pechini sol–gel method, and the ceramic samples were densified using a reactive sintering method resulting in densities >96% theoretical. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was completed to characterize the defect states and cationic valence compensation as a result of divalent (Ca 2+ or Sr 2+ ) and trivalent (Mn 3+ ) substitutions. XPS was completed for samples tested in oxidizing and reducing atmospheres (up to 1500 °C), which provided insights into the oxidation state transitions induced by the Ca 2+ and Sr 2+ dopants. The work notably demonstrated, for the first time, the oxidation/reduction transitions of Cr 4+ to Cr 3+ in Sr 2+ /Mn 3+ co-doped samples under reducing atmospheres. Reflectance UV–vis spectrophotometry optical band gap measurements were also completed for the same materials; a decrease in the optical band gap (2.81–3.12 eV) was shown with increased substitution, suggesting electronic structure modifications in the LaCrO 3 perovskite. Density functional theory calculations validated experimental trends, predicting a diminishing band gap with a rising dopant concentration. The transition in Cr oxidation states was attributed to the presence of divalent/trivalent cations. These findings contribute some insights into methods to tune the LaCrO 3 electrical properties for various low- and high-temperature applications.

Numerical solution of a coupled pair of elliptic equations from solid state electronics

Iterative methods are considered for the solution of a coupled pair of second order elliptic partial differential equations which arise in the field of solid state electronics. A finite difference scheme is used which retains the conservative form of the differential equations. Numerical solutions are obtained in two ways, by multigrid and dynamic alternating direction implicit methods. Numerical results are presented which show the multigrid method to be an efficient way of solving this problem.

A molecular ground electronic state with an occupied 5g spinor—The superheavy (E125)F molecule

Fully relativistic calculations, primarily at the 4-component coupled-cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples [CCSD(T)] level of theory with the Dirac–Coulomb (DC) Hamiltonian, have been carried out for the superheavy (E125)F molecule using large Gaussian basis sets. The electronic ground state is determined to have an [Og]8s 2 5g 1 6f 3 configuration on E125 with an Ω = 6 ground state and an 8p electron largely donated to F. A Mulliken population analysis indicates that the ground state is mainly ionic with a partial charge of +0.79 on E125 and a single sigma bond involving the F 2p and E125 8p spinors. The occupied g spinor is not involved in the bonding. With the largest basis set used in this work, the (0 K) dissociation energy was calculated at the DC-CCSD(T) level of theory to be 7.02 eV. Analogous calculations were also carried out for the E125 atom, both the neutral and its cation. The lowest energy electron configuration of E125 + , [Og]$8s$$^{2}_{1/2}$$5g$$^{1}_{7/2}$$6f$$^{3}_{5/2}$ with a J = 6 ground state, was found to be similar to that in (E125)F, while the neutral E125 atom has an [Og]$8s$$^{2}_{1/2}$$5g$$^{1}_{7/2}$$6f$$^{2}_{5/2}$$7d$$^{1}_{3/2}$$8p$$^{1}_{1/2}$ ground state electron configuration with a J = 17/2 ground state. The ionization energy (IE) of E125 is reported for the first time and is calculated to be 4.70 eV at the DC-CCSD(T) level of theory. Non-relativistic calculations were also carried out on the E125 atom and the (E125)F molecule. Here, the non-relativistic ground state of the E125 atom was calculated to have a 5g 5 ground state with an IE of just 3.4 eV. The net effect of relativity on (E125)F is to stabilize its bonding.
