AMPX and ENDF/B-VIII.1 Thermal Scattering Library [Slides]

This presentation provides an enlightening discussion of AMPX and ENDF/B-VIII.1. The talk begins with general ENDF issues encountered. Then narrows down into Issues particular to thermal scattering library. Such as the need for clear communication of the intended use for the file and the question of “Which graphite should I use in model?”. The presentation then looks at TSL files with many Bragg peaks are driving a change in SCALE CE library format and transport codes. This lecture concludes with a look at usage of thermal kernels with sharp peaks with the issues encountered using ENDF/B-VIII.0 data and resolved.

Proposed Methodology for Evaluating and Validating TSLs [Slides]

This presentation begins by providing an overview of the research and discusses recent efforts in validating thermal neutron scattering cross sections, including differential cross section measurements at ORNL for evaluation and validation, total cross section measurements at RPI, pulsed-neutron die-away experiments at LLNL, and integral criticality experiments by LLNL. The presentation also proposes a methodology not only for validating thermal scattering files that utilizes all available experimental data, but also for evaluating new libraries as demonstrated on polystyrene. In conclusion, polystyrene evaluation was conducted using multiple experiments, including differential and integral. The proposed methodology has been shown to improve neutron transport and files have been submitted to NNDC for inclusion in ENDF/B-VIII.1 release. MCT-012 & PCM-002 has been relatively insensitive to changes in $\mathcal{S}(α,β)$. The research found that differences in differential results don’t always propagate to differences in integral results, hence why evaluation of differential data important. Future work on the project is also discussed.

Summary of changes to the ENDF library [Slides]

This presentation discusses the major revisions that the TSL sublibrary is undergoing. It also discusses mass(ive) sublibrary changes, charged particle evaluations, INDEN evaluations, and the non-INDEN neutron sublibrary. The presentation concludes by stating that there are conflicts that need to be resolved and that they have enough contributions that the executive committee feels that an ENDF/B-VIII.1 release is warranted by February 2023.

Continuing Development of the Nuclear Data Processing Code AMPX [Poster]

The ENDF/B-VIII.1 evaluation library has seen a great growth in the thermal neutron scattering sub-library. The SCALE code system has traditionally approached CE transport by assuming that the CE library on disk represented the fully expanded cumulative probability distributions, conditional on exiting angle and marginal on exiting energy. While this is a complete description of the data, it comes at the potential cost of large amounts of on-disk storage. This approach was strained by several TSL files in ENDF/B-VIII.1, such as graphite, which contained data for a large number of Bragg edges. In the fully expanded probability distributions, this was found to be a disproportionately large fraction of the SCALE CE library.

ENDF/B-VIII.1: Thermal Neutron Scattering Sublibrary

The thermal neutron scattering law (TSL) sublibrary aims to describe the interaction of incident neutrons at thermal or sub-thermal energies with different compound materials such fuels, moderators and special-purpose materials. In ENDF/B-VIII.1 there was a large number of new and updated TSL evaluations, including traditional moderators (light water, Beryllium metal, Beryllium Oxide, Calcium Hydride, plastics (Polystyrene and Lucite), graphite (reactor-grade and crystalline), anhydrous Hydrogen Fluoride, and heavy paraffinic oil); exotic moderators (Beryllium Carbide, Zirconium Hydride, Yttrium Hydride, Lithium-7 Hydride and Deuteride), FLiBe molten salt, structural materials and cladding (Silicon Carbide, Silicon Dioxide, Zirconium Carbide), fuels (Plutonium Dioxide, Uranium Carbide, Uranium metal, Uranium Nitride, Uranium Dioxide, Uranium Hydride), and special purpose materials. In ENDF/B-VIII.1 we also distribute alongside the evaluated files, a comma-separated file (CSV), named TSL_MAT_numbers.csv, which lists all evaluated files in the current release and their corresponding unique MAT number.
