Renewable Energy Integration in Remote Alaska Communities

This guide was developed through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project (ETIPP) technical assistance (TA) projects for Nikolski and St. George. Both communities had wind turbine projects that failed due to integration and maintenance issues. Due to these failures, Nikolski and St. George sought help to investigate renewable energy alternatives and associated integration strategies, with a focus on technologies that could be easily maintained within the community. The primary objective of this guide was to interview subject matter experts and document lessons learned to address potential renewable energy and storage integration issues in remote Alaskan communities. This guide is intended to provide information to rural Alaskan communities considering renewables with the purpose of sharing best practices and case studies to facilitate the successful implementation of future renewable energy projects.

Project Planning for Community Resilience: Aquinnah and Chilmark, Massachusetts

This report presents the findings of an energy system planning study for the towns of Aquinnah and Chilmark, MA, on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, conducted under the U.S. Department of Energy ETIPP program. The study used the DER-CAM model to optimize the deployment of PV and battery microgrids to enhance energy resilience against power outages, particularly winter storms. Key findings show that PV is highly cost-effective and delivers net annual savings. However, due to limited rooftop space and low winter solar output, PV and battery storage alone cannot support the full critical load during outages. Solutions incorporating conventional backup generators were found to be more economically viable for achieving 100% critical load support.

Shelter Island, New York, Energy Reliability Assessment and Local Generation Options

Shelter Island's Green Options Committee (GOC), an all-volunteer committee tasked with considering all environmental conservation issues, requested technical assistance under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)-funded Energy Technology Innovation Partnership Project (ETIPP). The primary goals of this technical assistance project included: 1. Informing the GOC about energy use trends within the community as well as distributed solar, wind and storage opportunities; 2. Providing additional resources and technical feasibility information for geothermal, agrivoltaics and tidal energy; 3. Supporting the development of a community engagement plan; and 4. Supporting collaboration between the GOC and PSEG in order to find mutually beneficial follow-on projects. Assistance from NLR to help the GOC meet these overall project goals was provided through the following primary tasks: 1. Collaborate with the local utility in order to collect energy use data and inform the community on energy use patterns through a baseline assessment; 2. Technical analysis of distributed renewable and resiliency opportunities (solar, wind and storage) that best align with the community's energy priorities; 3. Provide high level feasibility support for future renewable energy scenarios that include agrivoltaic solutions, tidal energy, and geothermal projects on Shelter Island, and 4. Integrate all findings into a Community Outreach presentation to help the GOC engage with community stakeholders to build support and awareness of chosen resilience strategies.
