The Impurity Magnetic Susceptibility of Semiconductors in the Case of Direct Exchange Interaction in the Ising Model

The numerical simulation was applied to study the temperature dependence of the impurity magnetic susceptibility. The direct exchange interaction of the impurity magnetic moments randomly distributed in space was considered within the Ising model. When the temperature in a system decreases, the magnetic susceptibility behavior in this system ceases to comply with the Curie law, which is associated with the formation of a spin glass phase. It is shown that the expression of the preexponential factor in the formula for the direct exchange interaction considerably influences the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility only in the case of ferromagnetic exchange.

Critical Properties in the Ising Model on a Triangular Lattice with the Variable Interlayer Exchange Interaction

Phase transitions and critical and thermodynamic properties of the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model on a layered triangular lattice with variable interlayer exchange interaction are studied by the replica algorithm of the Monte Carlo method. The studies are carried out for the ratios of the intralayer J{sub 1} and interlayer J{sub 2} exchange interactions in the range of r = J{sub 2}/J{sub 1} = 0.01–1.0. It is established that a second-order phase transition is observed in the considered r interval. Using the finite size scaling theory, the static critical exponents of the heat capacity α, susceptibility γ, order parameter β, correlation radius ν, and Fisher index η are calculated. It is shown that the universality class of the critical behavior of this model is preserved in the interval of 0.05 < r ≤ 1.0. It was found that with a further decrease in the r value, a crossover from the three-dimensional critical behavior to the quasi-two-dimensional one is observed.

Magnetic Exchange Interactions in Geometrically Frustrated Antiferromagnet of ZnCr{sub 2−x}Ga{sub x}O{sub 4}

In this work, the structural and magnetic properties in ZnCr{sub 2−x}Ga{sub x}O{sub 4} were investigated. In ZnCr{sub 2−x}Ga{sub x}O{sub 4}, Ga{sup 3+} ions substitute partial Cr{sup 3+} ions and occupy the B sites. ZnCr{sub 2}O{sub 4} undergoes a paramagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition at 12 K. In ZnCr{sub 2−x}Ga{sub x}O{sub 4}, the antiferromagnetic short-range correlation occurs below 60 K above T{sub N}. The Ga{sup 3+} doping weakens the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange interaction (J{sub 1}) and induces ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction (J{sub 2}) among the B site magnetic ions. The generation of the ferromagnetic J{sub 2} is ascribed to structure distortion induced by the Ga{sup 3+} doping.

Pressure-tuning of bond-directional exchange interactions and magnetic frustration in hyperhoneycomb iridate β-Li 2 IrO 3

Here, we explore the response of Ir 5d orbitals to pressure in β-Li 2 IrO 3 , a hyperhoneycomb iridate in proximity to a Kitaev quantum spin-liquid (QSL) ground state. X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals a reconstruction of the electronic ground state below 2 GPa, the same pressure range where x-ray magnetic circular dichroism shows an apparent collapse of magnetic order. The electronic reconstruction, which manifests a reduction in the effective spin-orbit interaction in 5d orbitals, pushes β-Li 2 IrO 3 further away from the pure J eff = 1/2 limit. Although lattice symmetry is preserved across the electronic transition, x-ray diffraction shows a highly anisotropic compression of the hyperhoneycomb lattice which affects the balance of bond-directional Ir-Ir exchange interactions driven by spin-orbit coupling at Ir sites. An enhancement of symmetric anisotropic exchange over Kitaev and Heisenberg exchange interactions seen in theoretical calculations that use precisely this anisotropic Ir-Ir bond compression provides one possible route to the realization of a QSL state in this hyperhoneycomb iridate at high pressures.

Noncentrosymmetric Triangular Magnet CaMnTeO 6 : Strong Quantum Fluctuations and Role of s 0 versus s 2 Electronic States in Competing Exchange Interactions

Abstract Noncentrosymmetric triangular magnets offer a unique platform for realizing strong quantum fluctuations. However, designing these quantum materials remains an open challenge attributable to a knowledge gap in the tunability of competing exchange interactions at the atomic level. Here, a new noncentrosymmetric triangular S = 3/2 magnet CaMnTeO 6 is created based on careful chemical and physical considerations. The model material displays competing magnetic interactions and features nonlinear optical responses with the capability of generating coherent photons. The incommensurate magnetic ground state of CaMnTeO 6 with an unusually large spin rotation angle of 127°(1) indicates that the anisotropic interlayer exchange is strong and competing with the isotropic interlayer Heisenberg interaction. The moment of 1.39(1) µB , extracted from low‐temperature heat capacity and neutron diffraction measurements, is only 46% of the expected value of the static moment 3 µB . This reduction indicates the presence of strong quantum fluctuations in the half‐integer spin S = 3/2 CaMnTeO 6 magnet, which is rare. By comparing the spin‐polarized band structure, chemical bonding, and physical properties of AMnTeO 6 ( A = Ca, Sr, Pb), how quantum‐chemical interpretation can illuminate insights into the fundamentals of magnetic exchange interactions, providing a powerful tool for modulating spin dynamics with atomically precise control is demonstrated.

On the Suppression of Electron-Hole Exchange Interaction in a Reservoir of Nonradiative Excitons

Mechanisms of the suppression of the electron-hole exchange interaction in nonradiative excitons with a large in-plane wave vector in high-quality heterostructures with quantum wells are analyzed theoretically. It is shown that the dominant suppression mechanism is exciton-exciton scattering accompanied by the mutual spin flips of like carriers (either two electrons or two holes), comprising the excitons. As a result, the electron spin polarization in nonradiative excitons may be retained for a long time. The analysis of experimental data shows that this relaxation time can exceed one nanosecond. This long-term and optically controllable spin memory in an exciton reservoir may be of interest for future information technologies.

Competing and Anisotropic Exchange Interactions in the Kagome Lattice Ferromagnet Co 3 Sn 2 S 2

The kagome lattice ferromagnet, Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 , serves as template for a host of materials that exhibit exotic topological states, as well as a giant anomalous Hall state—a momentous realization in condensed matter physics. The anisotropic exchange interactions are probed by applying external magnetic fields in various directions along major crystal axes and the magneto-optical response is recorded. When magnetic fields are applied along the a–b plane, long-range magnetism forms and grows with increasing temperature. This counterintuitive behavior does not take place when the magnetic field is applied at a slight angle off the a–b plane. In fact, the opposite effect is observed for this exact configuration, as well as for other fields arrangements. Ab initio theoretical calculations reveal that anisotropic exchange interactions are the underlying mechanism leading to this peculiar behavior. Furthermore, the long-range ferromagnetic order along the c-axis is thought to coexist with an antiferromagnetic, or spin glass, state in the a–b plane, before becoming paramagnetic above the Curie temperature (T c ). These two coexisting magnetic states are thought to compete as the temperature approaches T c , with the antiferromagnetic state gaining strength compared to the ferromagnetic order.

Proximity-Induced Exchange Interaction: A New Pathway for Quantum Sensing Using Spin Centers in Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Defects in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), a two-dimensional van der Waals material, have attracted a great deal of interest because of its potential in various quantum applications. Due to hBN’s two-dimensional nature, the spin center in hBN can be engineered in the proximity of the target material, providing advantages over its three-dimensional counterparts, such as the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. Here, in this work, we propose a novel quantum sensing protocol driven by exchange interaction between the spin center in hBN and the underlying magnetic substrate induced by the magnetic proximity effect. By first-principles calculation, we demonstrate that the induced exchange interaction dominates over the dipole–dipole interaction by orders of magnitude when in the proximity. The interaction remains antiferromagnetic across all stacking configurations between the spin center in hBN and the target van der Waals magnets. Additionally, we explored the scaling behavior of the exchange field as a function of the spatial separation between the spin center and the targets.

Magnetic structure and exchange interactions in the Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7

In this report the Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 is one of a series of gadolinium pyrochlore compounds with a variety of B-site cations. Despite the expected simplicity of a spin-only Gd 3+ Heisenberg interaction model, the gadolinium pyrochlore series exhibits various complex magnetic ground states at low temperature. Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 displays the highest temperature magnetic order of the series with $T_N$=1.6 K, which has been attributed to enhanced superexchange pathways facilitated by empty $5d$ $e_g$ Pt orbitals. In this study, we use various neutron scattering techniques on an isotopically enriched polycrystalline 160 Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 sample to examine the magnetic structure and spin-wave excitation spectrum below $T_N$ in order to extract the dominant exchange interactions. We find that the ground-state magnetic structure is the Palmer-Chalker state previously seen in Gd 2 Sn 2 O 7 with an associated gapped excitation spectrum consistent with enhanced exchange interactions between further near-neighbor Gd 3+ ions. We confirm this exchange model with analysis of the magnetic diffuse scattering in the paramagnetic regime using polarized neutrons.

Floquet-driven indirect exchange interaction mediated by topological insulator surface states

Light drives offer a potential tool for the dynamical control of magnetic interactions in matter. We theoretically investigate the indirect exchange coupling between two parallel chains of magnetic impurities on the surface of a topological insulator, driven by a time-periodic circularly polarized light field in the high-frequency, off-resonant regime. We derive a closed-form analytic expression for the spin susceptibility of the photon-dressed topological insulator surface states and obtain the irradiation dependence of the Ising, Heisenberg, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange couplings between the impurity chains. Our results show a two-pronged modification of these exchange couplings by periodic drives. First, the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) oscillation period of the exchange couplings can be extended by enhancing the driving strength. Second, increasing driving strength enhances the envelope of RKKY oscillations of the Ising type while suppressing those of the Heisenberg type and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya type. Furthermore, our work provides useful insights for realizing Floquet engineering of collinear and noncollinear indirect exchange interactions in topological insulating systems.

Extended exchange interactions stabilize long-period magnetic structures in Cr 1/3 NbS 2

The topologically protected, chiral soliton lattice is a unique state of matter offering intriguing functionality, and it may serve as a robust platform for storing and transporting information in future spintronic devices. While the monoaxial chiral magnet Cr 1/3 NbS 2 is known to host this exotic state in an applied magnetic field, its detailed microscopic origin has remained a matter of debate. In this paper, we work towards addressing this open question by measuring the spin wave spectrum of Cr 1/3 NbS 2 over the entire Brillouin zone with inelastic neutron scattering. The well-defined spin wave modes allow us to determine the values of several microscopic interactions for this system. The experimental data are well-explained by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with exchange constants up to the third nearest neighbor and an easy plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy term. Finally, our work shows that both the second and third nearest neighbor exchange interactions contribute to the formation of the helimagnetic and chiral soliton lattice states in this robust three-dimensional magnet.

Magnetic exchange interactions in binuclear and tetranuclear iron(III) complexes described by spin‐flip DFT and Heisenberg effective Hamiltonians

Abstract Low‐energy spectra of single‐molecule magnets (SMMs) are often described by Heisenberg Hamiltonians. Within this formalism, exchange interactions between magnetic centers determine the ground‐state multiplicity and energy separation between the ground and excited states. In this contribution, we extract exchange coupling constants ( J ) for a set of iron (III) binuclear and tetranuclear complexes from all‐electron calculations using non‐collinear spin‐flip time‐dependent density functional theory (NC‐SF‐TDDFT). For 12 binuclear complexes with J ‐values ranging from −6 to −132 cm −1 , our benchmark calculations using the short‐range hybrid ω PBEh functional and 6‐31G(d,p) basis set agree well with the experimentally derived values (mean absolute error of 4.7 cm −1 ). For the tetranuclear SMMs, the computed J constants are within 6 cm −1 from the experimentally derived values. We explore the range of applicability of the Heisenberg model by analyzing bonding patterns in these Fe(III) complexes using natural orbitals (NO), their occupations, and the number of effectively unpaired electrons. The results illustrate the efficiency of the spin‐flip protocol for computing the exchange couplings and the utility of the NO analysis in assessing the validity of effective spin Hamiltonians.

Floquet control of indirect exchange interaction in periodically driven two-dimensional electron systems

We present a theory for the Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida (RKKY) interaction mediated by a two-dimensional (2D) electron system subjected to periodic driving. This is demonstrated for a 2D metal with two ferromagnetic chains deposited in parallel. Our calculations reveal new non-analytic features in the time-averaged spin susceptibility. For weak light–matter coupling, the RKKY interaction shows oscillations with a period tunable by the light amplitude and frequency. For stronger light–matter coupling, the interaction becomes non-oscillatory and remains purely ferromagnetic. Our findings open a path forward for realizing dynamic control of the indirect exchange interaction in 2D magnetic structures.

Increasing Spin-Orbital Coupling at Relativistic Exchange Interaction of Electron-Hole Pairs in Graphene

Graphene model with a high-energy k · p-Hamiltonian has been proposed. A feature of the model is the increasing spin-orbital coupling at relativistic exchange interactions of electron-hole pairs. Topological nontriviality of the model has been established by non-abelian Zak phase calculations. It has been shown that the homotopy group of the model is Z{sub 2} × Z{sub 4}.

Donor–Acceptor Conjugated Copolymers Containing Transition-Metal Complex: Intrachain Magnetic Exchange Interactions and Magneto-Optical Activity

A donor-acceptor conjugated copolymer containing thienothiophene (TT) (Donor) units and Co(II) complexes (Acceptor) has been synthesized and characterized. The studies of magnetic properties of the polymers by SQUID and EPR measurements showed antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between neighboring spin centers along with the polymer backbone through intrachain in-teractions. It is the first time that D-A conjugated polymer backbone serving as bridging ligands for magnetic couplings, making this type of polymers promising as magnetic materials. Moreover, the magneto-optical activity (MOA) of polymer LCP1 was char-acterized using magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy. It was found that the material exhibits a large magneto-optic rotation with a peak Verdet constant of 2980 deg*T -1 *m -1 at 590 nm.

Effects of Indirect Exchange Interactions in a Mixed-Spin Bilayer Film with Nonmagnetic Layers

The magnetic properties (phase diagrams and magnetizations) of a mixed-spin Ising ferrimagnetic bilayer film on the graphene honeycomb lattice where two (A and B) layers separated by a number of nonmagnetic layers are investigated by the use of the effective field theory with correlations. The systems are consisted of two (spin-1/2 and spin-1) magnetic atoms where spin-1 atoms have a single-ion anisotropy. The effects of an indirect exchange interaction between the A and B layers are examined. Some characteristic behaviors have been found in the system, when the single-ion anisotropy takes a large negative value. Some characteristic phenomena of ferrimagnetism, have been found in the thermal variation of magnetization.

Magnetic exchange interactions in the van der Waals layered antiferromagnet MnPSe 3

Two-dimensional van der Waals compounds with magnetic ions on a honeycomb lattice are hosts to a variety of exotic behavior. The magnetic interactions in one such compound, MnPSe 3 , are investigated with elastic and inelastic neutron scattering. Magnetic excitations are observed in the magnetically ordered regime and persist to temperatures well above the ordering temperature, T N =74K, consistent with low dimensional magnetic interactions. The inelastic neutron scattering results allow a model spin Hamiltonian to be presented that includes dominant intralayer interactions of J 1ab =0.45 meV, J 2ab =0.03 meV, J 3ab =0.19 meV, consistent with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, despite the quasi-2D behavior, appreciable interlayer interactions of J c =0.031(5) meV are required to model the data. No evidence for anisotropy in the form of a spin gap is observed in the data collected. The measurements on MnPSe 3 are contrasted with those on MnPS 3 and reveal a large increase in the interlayer exchange interaction in MnPSe 3 that may stabilize the similar ordering temperatures in the bulk compounds.

Magnetic structure and exchange interactions in the layered semiconductor CrPS 4

Compounds with two-dimensional (2D) layers of magnetic ions weakly connected by van der Waals bonding offer routes to enhance quantum behavior, stimulating both fundamental and applied interest. CrPS 4 is one such magnetic van der Waals material, however, it has undergone only limited investigation. Here we present a comprehensive series of neutron scattering measurements to determine the magnetic structure and exchange interactions. The observed magnetic excitations allow a high degree of constraint on the model parameters not normally associated with measurements on a powder sample. The results demonstrate the 2D nature of the magnetic interactions, while also revealing the importance of interactions along 1D chains within the layers. The subtle role of competing interactions is observed, which manifest in a nontrivial magnetic transition and a tunable magnetic structure in a small applied magnetic field through a spin-flop transition. Our results on the bulk compound provide insights that can be applied to an understanding of the behavior of reduced layer CrPS 4 .
