Calculation of the total electron excitation cross section in the Born approximation using Slater wave functions for the Li (2s yields 2p), Li (2s yields 3p), Na (3s yields 4p), Mg (3p yields 4s), Ca (4s yields 4p) and K (4s yields 4p) excitations

Excitation of neutral atoms by inelastic scattering of incident electrons in gaseous nebulae were investigated using Slater Wave functions to describe the initial and final states of the atom. Total cross sections using the Born Approximation are calculated for: Li(2s yields 2p), Na(3s yields 4p), k(4s yields 4p). The intensity of emitted radiation from gaseous nebulae is also calculated, and Maxwell distribution is employed to average the kinetic energy of electrons.

Investigation of RF excited CW CO2 waveguide lasers local oscillator - RF excitation

A new local oscillator housing was built which seems to have improved laser life. Laser cooling was changed from internal water cooling to the more convenient thermal contact cooling. At the present time, a conclusion can not be made if the 20 percent reduction in power output is the result of poorer cooling or poorer grating alignment. The coupling-starting network was improved from 55 to about 90 percent. It can be adjusted by varying trimmers C sub 1 and C sub 2 to match RF power levels between 10 and 30 W. If the laser admittance changes greatly with laser life rematching will have to be achieved by remote control for space applications. The same holds true if the RF power level has to be changed with a maximum efficiency constraint.

Sources of mesoscale variability of gravity waves. I - Topographic excitation. II - Frontal, convective, and jet stream excitation

The effect of topography as a source of mesoscale variability was investigated using aircraft measurements of winds and temperature collected during the Global Atmospheric Sampling Program, with results showing marked increases in the variance of zonal and meridional wind speeds and of potential temperature over rough terrain. In addition, four cases of mesoscale variance enhancements of horizontal velocity and temperature due to frontal activity, nonfrontal convection, and wind shear were studied. The implications of these episodic enhancements of variances for the vertical transports of energy and momentum are considered in the framework of the gravity wave theory.

Coherence Measurements for Excited to Excited State Transitions in Barium

Experimental studies concerning elastic and inelastic electron scattering by coherently ensembles of Ba (...6s6p (sub 1)P(sub 1)) atoms with various degrees of alignment will be described. An in-plane, linearly-polarized laser beam was utilized to prepare these target ensembles and the electron scattering signal as a function of polarization angle was measured for several laser geometries at fixed impact energies and scattering angles. From these measurements, we derived cross sections and electron-impact coherence parameters associated with the electron scattering process which is time reverse of the actual experimentally studied process. This interpretation of the experiment is based on the theory of Macek and Herte. The experimental results were also interpreted in terms of cross sections and collision parameters associated with the actual experimental processes. Results obtained so far will be presented and plans for further studies will be discussed.
