In [1] we proposed a model for Heterotic F-theory duality with Wilson line symmetry-breaking and a 4 + 1 split of the F-theory spectral divisor. One goal of this note is to call attention to the existence of right-handed neutrinos in our F-theory model. As pointed out in section 4 of [2] such existence may be evidence for the U(1) X -symmetry that remains after the Higgsing of E 8 via E 8 $\Rightarrow$ SU(5) gauge ⊕ [SU(4) ⊕ U(1) X ] Higgs occasioned by the 4 + 1 split of the spectral divisor. In addition, as a result of the $\mathbb{Z}$ 2 -action that supports the Wilson line we argue that the U(1) X -symmetry is, in fact, broken to $\mathbb{Z}$ 2 -matter parity. Finally we identify co-dimension 3 singularities which determine Yukawa couplings for the MSSM matter fields.
We study the cobordism conjecture of McNamara and Vafa which asserts that the bordism group of quantum gravity is trivial. In the context of type IIB string theory compactified on a circle, this predicts the presence of D7-branes. On the other hand, the non-Abelian structure of the IIB duality group SL (2, Z) implies the existence of additional [p, q] 7-branes. We find that this additional information is instead captured by the space of closed paths on the moduli space of elliptic curves parameterizing distinct values of the type IIB axio-dilaton. This description allows to recover the full structure of non-Abelian braid statistics for 7-branes. Combining the cobordism conjecture with an earlier Swampland conjecture by Ooguri and Vafa, we argue that only certain congruence subgroups $\Gamma\subset$ SL(2, Z) specifying genus zero modular curves can appear in 8D F-theory vacua. This leads to a successful prediction for the allowed Mordell–Weil torsion groups for 8D F-theory vacua.
Type IIB supergravity enjoys a discrete non-Abelian duality group, which has potential quantum anomalies. In this paper we explicitly compute these, and present the bordism group that controls them, modulo some physically motivated assumptions. Quite surprisingly, we find that they do not vanish, which naively would signal an inconsistency of F-theory. Remarkably, a subtle modification of the standard 10d Chern-Simons term cancels these anomalies, a fact which relies on the specific field content of type IIB supergravity. We also discover other ways to cancel this anomaly, via a topological analog of the Green-Schwarz mechanism. These alternative type IIB theories have the same low energy supergravity limit as ordinary type IIB, but a different spectrum of extended objects. They could either be part of the Swampland, or connect to the standard theory via domain walls.
The modern approach to m-form global symmetries in a d-dimensional quantum field theory (QFT) entails specifying dimension d–m–1 topological generalized symmetry operators which non-trivially link with m-dimensional defect operators. In QFTs engineered via string constructions on a non-compact geometry X, these defects descend from branes wrapped on non-compact cycles which extend from a localized source / singularity to the boundary ∂X. The generalized symmetry operators which link with these defects arise from magnetic dual branes wrapped on cycles in ∂X. This provides a systematic way to read off various properties of such topological operators, including their worldvolume topological field theories, and the resulting fusion rules. We illustrate these general features in the context of 6D superconformal field theories, where we use the F-theory realization of these theories to read off the worldvolume theory on the generalized symmetry operators. Defects of dimension 3 which are charged under a suitable 3-form symmetry detect a non-invertible fusion rule for these operators. We also sketch how similar considerations hold for related systems.
A discrepancy between the measured anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (g - 2) μ and computed Standard Model value now stands at a combined 4.2σ following experiments at Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) and the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL). A solution to the disagreement is uncovered in flipped SU(5) with additional TeV-Scale vector-like 10 +$\bar{10}$ multiplets and charged singlet derived from local F-Theory, collectively referred to as $\mathcal {F}$-SU(5). Here we engage general No-Scale supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking in $\mathcal {F}$-SU(5) D-brane model building to alleviate the (g-2)μ. tension between the Standard Model and observations. A robust Δa μ (SUSY) is realized via mixing of M 5 and M 1X at the secondary SU(5) x U(1) X unification scale in $\mathcal {F}$-SU(5) emanating from SU(5) breaking and U(1) X flux effects. Calculations unveil Δa μ (SUSY) = 19.0-22.3 x 10 -10 for gluino masses of M($\tilde{g}$ = 2.25-2.56 TeV nd higgsino dark matter, aptly residing within the BNL+FNAL 1σ mean. This (g – 2)μ favorable region of the model space also generates the correct light Higgs boson mass and branching ratios of companion rare decay processes, and is further consistent with all LHC Run 2 constraints. Finally, we also examine the heavy SUSY Higgs boson in light of recent LHC searches for an extended Higgs sector.
We study 6d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) compactified on a circle with arbitrary twists. The theories obtained after compactification, often referred to as 5d Kaluza-Klein (KK) theories, can be viewed as starting points for RG flows to 5d SCFTs. According to a conjecture, all 5d SCFTs can be obtained in this fashion. We compute the Coulomb branch prepotential for all 5d KK theories obtainable in this manner and associate to these theories a smooth local genus one fibered Calabi-Yau threefold in which is encoded information about all possible RG flows to 5d SCFTs. These Calabi-Yau threefolds provide hitherto unknown M-theory duals of F-theory configurations compactified on a circle with twists. For certain exceptional KK theories that do not admit a standard geometric description we propose an algebraic description that appears to retain the properties of the local Calabi-Yau threefolds necessary to determine RG flows to 5d SCFTs, along with other relevant physical data.
Generalized global symmetries are a common feature of many quantum field theories decoupled from gravity. By contrast, in quantum gravity/the Swampland program, it is widely expected that all global symmetries are either gauged or broken, and this breaking is in turn related to the expected completeness of the spectrum of charged states in quantum gravity. We investigate the fate of such symmetries in the context of 7D and 5D vacua realized by compact Calabi-Yau spaces with localized singularities in M theory. We explicitly show how gravitational backgrounds support additional dynamical degrees of freedom which trivialize (i.e., “break”) the higher symmetries of the local geometric models. Local compatibility conditions across these different sectors lead to gluing conditions for gauging higher-form and (in the 5D case) higher-group symmetries. This also leads to a preferred global structure of the gauge group and higher-form gauge symmetries. In cases based on a genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau space, we also get an F-theory model in one higher dimension with corresponding constraints on the global form of the gauge group. The proposal details plans for an upcoming meeting as part of the annual Geometry and Strings conference series. This series was formerly known as the ``F-theory'' conference series and has since broadened to include more general approaches to high energy physics centered on geometry, quantum field theory and string theory. The University of Pennsylvania has agreed to host the 2023 installment of the conference, which will take place on the UPenn campus in March 2023. The main thrust of the activities will center on several interconnected areas within the subject, including: The Swampland Program in quantum gravity and its geometric manifestations. The Geometric Engineering Program in string theory and its application to numerous question in quantum field theory. The Generalized Symmetries Program in quantum field theory and string theory. The Machine Learning Program aimed at understanding the large number of vacua present in string theory. The conference will adhere to a code of conduct aimed at making the event accessible to all participants. Additionally, particular attention will be paid to having a balanced mix of junior, mid-level and senior speakers from diverse backgrounds.
We find through a systematic analysis that all but 29,223 of the 473.8 million 4D reflexive polytopes found by Kreuzer and Skarke have a 2D reflexive subpolytope. Such a subpolytope is generally associated with the presence of an elliptic or genus one fibration in the corresponding birational equivalence class of Calabi-Yau threefolds. This extends the growing body of evidence that most Calabi-Yau threefolds have an elliptically fibered phase.
