Stress distribution in and equivalent width of flanges of wide, thin-wall steel beams

The use of different forms of wide-flange, thin-wall steel beams is becoming increasingly widespread. Part of the information necessary for a national design of such members is the knowledge of the stress distribution in and the equivalent width of the flanges of such beams. This problem is analyzed in this paper on the basis of the theory of plane stress. As a result, tables and curves are given from which the equivalent width of any given beam can be read directly for use in practical design. An investigation is given of the limitations of this analysis due to the fact that extremely wide and thin flanges tend to curve out of their plane toward the neutral axis. A summary of test data confirms very satisfactorily the analytical results.

Feed-thru flange is useful in vacuum applications to cryogenic temperatures

Feed-thru flange seals inner and outer walls of high vacuum test chambers. It is used in vacuum applications at both cryogenic and higher than cryogenic temperatures. A damaged flange can still be used for partial vacuum, noncryogenic applications in conjunction with an appropriate rubber seal.

Effects of flanges on pressure distribution on a flat plate and on a corrugated surface at Mach numbers from 0.60 to 1.97

An 8 by 6 foot supersonic wind tunnel was used to obtain the static pressure distribution on a plate in the region of a flange placed normal to the airstream. Tests were conducted on both a flat plate surface and a corrugated surface using flange heights ranging from 10 to 125 percent of the boundary layer height. Data were obtained at a zero degree angle-of-attack and at Mach numbers from 0.60 to 1.97.

Caps Seal Boltholes On Vacuum-System Flanges

Sealing caps devised for boltholes on vacuum-system flanges. Used in place of leak-prone gaskets, and provide solid metal-to-metal interfaces. Each sealing cap contains square-cut circular groove in which O-ring placed. Mounted on studs protruding into access ports, providing positive seal around each bolthole. Each cap mates directly with surface of flange, in solid metal-to-metal fit, with O-ring completely captured in groove. Assembly immune to misalignment, leakage caused by vibration, and creeping distortion caused by weight of port. O-ring material chosen for resistance to high temperature; with appropriate choice of material, temperature raised to as much as 315 degrees C.

Compressive strength of flanges

The maximum compressive stress carried by a hinged flange is computed from a deformation theory of plasticity combined with the theory for finite deflections for this structure. The computed stresses agree well with those found experimentally. Empirical observation indicates that the results will also apply fairly well to the more commonly used flanges which are not hinged.

Critical Compressive Stress for Outstanding Flanges

A chart is presented for the values of the coefficient in the formula for the critical compressive stress at which buckling may be expected to occur in outstanding flanges. These flanges are flat rectangular plates supported along the loaded edges, supported and elastically restrained along one unloaded edge, and free along the other unloaded edge. The mathematical derivations of the formulas required for construction of the chart are given.

Analysis of Bonded Joints Between the Facesheet and Flange of Corrugated Composite Panels

This paper outlines a method for the stress analysis of bonded composite corrugated panel facesheet to flange joints. The method relies on the existing HyperSizer Joints software, which analyzes the bonded joint, along with a beam analogy model that provides the necessary boundary loading conditions to the joint analysis. The method is capable of predicting the full multiaxial stress and strain fields within the flange to facesheet joint and thus can determine ply-level margins and evaluate delamination. Results comparing the method to NASTRAN finite element model stress fields are provided illustrating the accuracy of the method.

Mechanics of Re-Torquing in Bolted Flange Connections

It has been widely accepted that the phenomenon of time-dependent loosening of flange connections is a strong consequence of the viscous nature of the compression seal material. Characterizing the coupled interaction between gasket creep and elastic bolt stiffness has been useful in predicting conditions that facilitate leakage. Prior advances on this sub-class of bolted joints has lead to the development of (1) constitutive models for elastomerics, (2) initial tightening strategies, (3) etc. The effect of re-torque, which is a major consideration for typical bolted flange seals used on the Space Shuttle fleet, has not been fully characterized, however. The current study presents a systematic approach to characterizing bolted joint behavior as the consequence of sequentially applied torques. Based on exprimenta1 and numerical results, the optimal re-torquing parameters have been identified that allow for the negligible load loss after pre-load application

Cryogenics Testbed Laboratory Flange Baseline Configuration

As an intern at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), I was involved in research for the Fluids and Propulsion Division of the NASA Engineering (NE) Directorate. I was immersed in the Integrated Ground Operations Demonstration Units (IGODU) project for the majority of my time at KSC, primarily with the Ground Operations Demonstration Unit Liquid Oxygen (GODU L02) branch of IGODU. This project was established to develop advancements in cryogenic systems as a part of KSC's Advanced Exploration Systems (AES) program. The vision of AES is to develop new approaches for human exploration, and operations in and beyond low Earth orbit. Advanced cryogenic systems are crucial to minimize the consumable losses of cryogenic propellants, develop higher performance launch vehicles, and decrease operations cost for future launch programs. During my internship, I conducted a flange torque tracking study that established a baseline configuration for the flanges in the Simulated Propellant Loading System (SPLS) at the KSC Cryogenics Test Laboratory (CTL) - the testing environment for GODU L02.

Diffusion bonding makes strong seal at flanged connector

Copper strip seals a high pressure fluid system connector so that it is insensitive to relaxation of the bolt loads. The copper strip is diffusion bonded to the surfaces of the connector flange by application of high pressure and temperature.

Spherical pipe joint delivers loads equally to mating flange

Oxidizer inlet duct with a ball joint pipe fitting incorporating two spherical bearing races and balls in contact with centering cage springs transmits an evenly distributed load to the mating flange. This design should find application in piping systems where unequal load distributions exist.
