Out-of-plane curved fluidic oscillator

Various implementations include, an out-of-plane feedback-type fluidic oscillator. including a first portion, a second portion, a middle portion coupled between the first portion and the middle portion, and an axis of rotation. The middle portion includes a first side, a second side opposite and spaced apart from the first side, and a middle plane, an interaction chamber, a fluid supply inlet, an outlet nozzle, a first feedback a channel, and a second feedback channel. The first side is coupled to the first portion, and the second side is coupled to the second portion. The first side, the second side, and the middle plane extend circumferentially around the axis of rotation. The middle plane is disposed equally distanced from the first side and the second side. The fluid stream oscillates as it flows through the interaction chamber such that the fluid stream oscillates as the fluid stream exits the outlet nozzle.

Fluidic Flow Assisted Deterministic Folding of Van der Waals Materials

Origami offers a distinct approach for designing and engineering new material structures and properties. The folding and stacking of atomically thin van der Waals (vdW) materials, for example, can lead to intriguing new physical properties including bandgap tuning, Van Hove singularity, and superconductivity. On the other hand, achieving well-controlled folding of vdW materials with high spatial precision has been extremely challenging and difficult to scale toward large areas. In this paper, a deterministic technique is reported to fold vdW materials at a defined position and direction using microfluidic forces. Electron beam lithography (EBL) is utilized to define the folding area, which allows precise control of the folding geometry, direction, and position beyond 100 nm resolution. Using this technique, single-atomic-layer vdW materials or their heterostructures can be folded without the need for any external supporting layers in the final folded structure. In addition, arrays of patterns can be folded across a large area using this technique and electronic devices that can reconfigure device functionalities through folding are also demonstrated. Such scalable formation of folded vdW material structures with high precision can lead to the creation of new atomic-scale materials and superlattices as well as opening the door to realizing foldable and reconfigurable electronics.

Three-Dimensional Bubble Fluidics in Architected Porous Media

Gas bubble flows in porous media often exhibit complex and seemingly unpredictable behaviors that are difficult to control. This lack of control limits the ability to design effective devices which manage multiphase flows. Here, we show how the design of 3D printed pores can deterministically control the flow path of an injected gas stream. Open cell structures can be designed to shape the gas/liquid interface with fidelity to control how the two phases are distributed throughout a porous material. The distributed gas volume is free to interact physically and chemically with the surrounding liquid phase, an effect we exploit to create a logical control gate to redirect flows within a lattice. This also allows us to design architectures for reactive capture and aerating bioreactors, resulting in patterned boundaries which can make more effective use of the liquid and gas reagents.

Computing of Fluidic Forces in Rotating Cylinders with Application to Active Magnetic Bearing Control

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has been engaged to develop molten salt technologies. Molten salts are chemically aggressive liquids that operate at high temperatures. As part of this activity, ORNL designed a molten salt pump for molten salt that has no seals and that operates immersed in the salt. To minimize wear on rotating components, the pump uses active magnetic bearings (AMBs) to support the shaft and rotor. The pump is centrifugal and is oriented horizontally (A. Melin, 2013).

Fuel Flow Modeling under Thermal Fluidics Considerations within Operational Domains of Molten Salt Reactors

Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs) offer significant versatility supported by their design flexibility and safety advantages due to high temperatures, design customization capabilities, strong negative reactivity feedback effects, and salt chemistry characteristics. Different control schedules and different mass flow rates in the MSR primary systems impact neutronics and thermal hydraulics coupling. The result is two-fold. First, it leads to adaptability in various applications when the customization of a MSR unit is desired. Second, it calls for the quantification of dynamics and safety characteristics to assess the operational domain and make sure reactor stability and inherent safety characteristics are maintained. This paper provides an in-depth transient analysis of the operational implications of MSRs having heat-generating fuel and heat-transporting salt mixed forming liquid fuel salts contained within primary systems. A coupling model was developed to simulate fuel flow in molten salt reactors. A zero-dimensional reactor kinetics model was used with a one-dimensional heat transfer model in the reactor core. The temperature reactivity feedbacks of the fuel salt resulting from the thermal-hydraulics model were used in the reactor kinetics model to complete the coupled code. The model was applied to simulate the Molten Salt Breeder Reactor (MSBR) response at steady state and transients. The developed model was shown to be a suitable tool for the dynamic analysis of molten salt reactors.
