Control of functional differential equations with function space boundary conditions.

The results of various authors dealing with problems involving functional differential equations with terminal conditions in function space are reviewed. The review includes not only very recent results, but also some little known results of Soviet mathematicians prior to 1970. Particular attention is given to results concerning controllability, existence of optimal controls, and necessary and sufficient conditions for optimality.

Phase transitions and critical behavior in hadronic transport with a relativistic density functional equation of state

We develop a flexible, relativistically covariant parametrization of the dense nuclear matter equation of state suited for inclusion in computationally demanding hadronic transport simulations. Within an implementation in the hadronic transport code smash, we show that effects due to bulk thermodynamic behavior are reproduced in dynamic hadronic systems, demonstrating that hadronic transport can be used to study critical behavior in dense nuclear matter, both at and away from equilibrium. We also show that two-particle correlations calculated from hadronic transport simulation data follow theoretical expectations based on the second-order cumulant ratio, and constitute a clear signature of the crossover region above the critical point.

Stationary turbulent closure via the Hopf functional equation

Explicit solutions of the stationary Hopf equation are discussed and their computational possibilities are explored. The motivation is to circumvent the infinite hierarchy of coupled equations for the velocity moments and obtain an exact closure of the steady-state 3D Navier-Stokes equations, without modeling assumptions or truncation. The Hopf formulation of the Navier-Stokes equation is reviewed. A stationary homogeneous solution for 2D flow is displayed and discussed. It is shown how depletion of nonlinearity may arise for 3D forced homogeneous flow. The general 3D forced case is considered and a method for closing the 3D unforced equations with arbitrary boundary conditions is derived.

Control of functional differential equations to target sets in function space

Optimal control of systems governed by functional differential equations of retarded and neutral type is considered. Problems with function space initial and terminal manifolds are investigated. Existence of optimal controls, regularity, and bang-bang properties are discussed. Necessary and sufficient conditions are derived, and several solved examples which illustrate the theory are presented.

Topologies for neutral functional differential equations.

Bounded topologies are considered for functional differential equations of the neutral type in which present dynamics of the system are influenced by its past behavior. A special bounded topology is generated on a collection of absolutely continuous functions with essentially bounded derivatives, and an application to a class of nonlinear neutral functional differential equations due to Driver (1965) is presented.
