Engineering Li/Na selectivity in 12-Crown-4–functionalized polymer membranes

Significance Lithium is a key ingredient in batteries, which are integral components of next-generation automobiles, airplanes, grid energy storage, and electronic devices. Unfortunately, lithium extraction from natural sources is laborious, slow, and costly, motivating the search for more efficient isolation techniques. While polymeric membranes could reduce the cost of lithium recovery, current membrane materials lack sufficient lithium-ion selectivity. To address this challenge, we introduce a class of polymeric membranes that incorporate ion binding sites, which significantly increases the transport selectivity of LiCl over NaCl. These studies provide guidelines and practical considerations for incorporating specific interactants into polymers that mediate selective ion transport.

Deactivation of SARS-CoV-2 by Boronic Acid-Functionalized Polymer

Boronic acid-modified polymers (BAMPs) can interact with glycoproteins and other glycosylated compounds through covalent binding of the boronic acid moieties to saccharide residues. As a first step toward evaluating the utility of BAMPs as SARS-CoV-2 antiviral agents, this COVID-19 rapid response LDRD was intended to examine the effect of BAMPs on SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein and its subsequent binding with ACE2 receptor protein. Multiple different approaches were attempted in order to determine whether BAMPs based on poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(ethylenimine) bind the spike protein, but failed to produce a definitive answer. However, two different enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays clearly showed no discernable effect of boronic acid in inhibiting spike-ACE2 binding.

Solid-State Side-Chain Functionalization of Conjugated Polymers for Expanded Chemical and Functional Versatility

Conjugated polymers that integrate diverse chemical functionalities with high electronic performance are essential for advanced organic electronic, optoelectronic, and biointerfaced technologies. Achieving such multifunctionality typically requires grafting functional units onto polymer side chains. However, conventional solution-phase approaches remain constrained by solubility limitations, side-chain-induced packing disruptions, and challenges in preserving charge transport. Here, we introduce a solid-state side-chain functionalization strategy that exploits a swellable polar side-chain architecture and azide–alkyne click chemistry to enable efficient molecular diffusion and reaction throughout predeposited polymer thin films. This approach substantially broadens the chemical compatibility of graftable units and mitigates the adverse effects on the electrical property. Moreover, the method supports spatially selective functionalization within a continuous film, enabling the patterned incorporation of chemically distinct groups to produce spatially defined optical properties. Here, this solid-state strategy thus provides a versatile platform for constructing conjugated polymers with expanded chemical versatility, preserved electronic performance, and programmable spatial functionality.

Communication—Functional Conductive Polymer Binder for Practical Si-Based Electrodes

Multifunctional conductive binders represent an emerging class of polymer materials to address inherent challenges of Si electrodes for high capacity lithium-ion batteries. Advanced binders with oriented functionalities are greatly desired to facilitate the battery chemistry. We here report stable capacity cycling of a practical composite anode comprising industrial available SiO x (>60 wt%), carbon materials and a conductive polymer binder—poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene- co -fluorenonecomethylbenzoic ester) (PFM). This multifunctional polymer functions as both an interface modifier and an electrode binder for high-performing SiO x composite electrodes. The viability of multifunctional conductive polymer binders was further validated in a practical full cell.

Chemiresistor sensor based on ion-imprinted polymer (IIP)-functionalized rGO for Cd(II) ions in water

This study reports the design and development of a novel chemiresistor (CR) sensor using ion imprinted polymer (IIP)-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (rGO) [IIP/rGO-CR] for cadmium ions (Cd(II)) determination in water. The sensor consisted of a CR transducer made of rGO channel bridging source and drain electrodes prepared by self-assembly and thermal reduction of graphene oxide (GO) on Au interdigitated electrodes chip fabricated on Si/SiO 2 substrate. The IIP was then grafted on rGO using surface-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with polyethylenimine (PEI) and methylacrylic acid (MAA) as dual functional monomers and Cd(II) ions as template through UV light-initiated copolymerization. The IIP functionalized on rGO acted as an effective recognition element that modulated the resistance of rGO-CR upon binding of Cd(II), enabling Cd(II) detection at ppb level in aqueous solutions. The prepared IIP/rGO-CR sensor worked effectively in the linear range of 2~200ppb and achieved a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.83 ppb, which is lower than the World Health Organization guidelines of 3ppb for drinking water quality. The developed sensor of IIP/rGO-CR showed a high selectivity against a variety of trace and heavy metal ions found in water and good stability for up to 60 days when stored at room temperature for Cd(II) determination in water. Further, the sensor was successfully applied to analyzing Cd(II) spiked in tap, lake and river waters with a 94.5%–113.5% recovery, demonstrating a high degree of accuracy even in complex water samples. Finally, our results illustrated that the CR sensor of IIP functionalized rGO provides a potential platform for sensitive, robust and low-cost environmental analysis of Cd(II) in water.

Monomer-scale design of functional protein polymers using consensus repeat sequences

Protein-based polymers possess chemically defined sequences that can encode diverse properties and functions into a new class of biopolymeric materials. However, sequence variation that emerges from evolution can obscure the sequence–function relationships of naturally derived polymers. One strategy to clarify these relationships is to identify common sequences between proteins with similar functions. These conserved sequences often emerge from repeat proteins, and “consensus repeat sequences” provide a convenient platform for systematic investigations of biopolymer sequence–property relationships. In this review, we highlight recent approaches to engineer tunable polymeric materials using monomer-scale design of consensus repeat proteins. Here, we explore established and emerging protein-based materials with mechanical resilience, thermodynamic phase behavior, chemical responsiveness, biomolecular transport, and hierarchical structure. Overall, recent advances in the monomer-scale design of repetitive protein polymers present exciting fundamental and translational opportunities for polymer scientists and engineers.
