Post-Newtonian kinetic theory

A kinetic theory for relativistic gases in the presence of gravitational fields is developed in the second post-Newtonian approximation. The corresponding Boltzmann equation is determined from the evolution of the one-particle distribution function with respect to the proper time along the world line of the particle. From the knowledge of the equilibrium Maxwell–Jüttner distribution function in the second post-Newtonian approximation the components of the particle four-flow and energy–momentum tensor are obtained. The Eulerian hydrodynamic equations for the mass density, mass-energy density and momentum density in the second post-Newtonian approximation are determined from the Boltzmann equation. It is shown that the combination of the hydrodynamic equations of mass and mass-energy densities leads to the hydrodynamic equation for the internal energy density in the first post-Newtonian approximation.

Relic cosmological vector fields and inflationary gravitational waves

Here we show that relic vector fields can significantly impact a spectrum of primordial gravitational waves in the postinflationary era. We consider a triplet of U(1) fields in a homogeneous, isotropic configuration. The interaction between the gravitational waves and the vector fields, from the end of reheating to the present day, yields novel spectral features. The amplitude, tilt, shape, and net chirality of the gravitational wave spectrum are shown to depend on the abundance of the electric- and magneticlike vector fields. Our results show that even a modest abundance can have strong implications for efforts to detect the imprint of gravitational waves on the cosmic microwave background polarization. We find that a vector field comprising less than 2% of the energy density during the radiation-dominated era can have a greater than order unity effect on the predicted inflationary gravitational wave spectrum.

Spontaneous Creation of Circularly Polarized Photons in Chiral Astrophysical Systems

This work establishes a relation between chiral anomalies in curved spacetimes and the radiative content of the gravitational field. In particular, we show that a flux of circularly polarized gravitational waves triggers the spontaneous creation of photons with net circular polarization from the quantum vacuum. Using waveform catalogs, we identify precessing binary black holes as astrophysical configurations that emit such gravitational radiation and then solve the fully nonlinear Einstein’s equations with numerical relativity to evaluate the net effect. The quantum amplitude for a merger is comparable to the Hawking emission rate of the final black hole and small to be directly observed. However, the implications for the inspiral of binary neutron stars could be more prominent, as argued on symmetry grounds.

The Juno mission as a probe of long-range new physics

Orbits of celestial objects, especially the geocentric and heliocentric ones, have been well explored to constrain new long-range forces beyond the Standard Model (SM), often referred to as fifth forces. In this paper, for the first time, we apply the motion of a spacecraft around Jupiter to probe fifth forces that don’t violate the equivalence principle. The spacecraft is the Juno orbiter, and ten of its early orbits already allow a precise determination of the Jovian gravitational field. We use the shift in the precession angle as a proxy to test non-gravitational interactions between Juno and Jupiter. Requiring that the contribution from the fifth force does not exceed the uncertainty of the precession shift inferred from data, we find that a new parameter space with the mass of the fifth-force mediator around 10 −14 eV is excluded at 95% C.L.

Graviton detection and the quantization of gravity

We revisit a question asked by Dyson: “Is a graviton detectable?” We demonstrate that in both Dyson’s original sense and in a more modern measurement-theoretic sense, it is possible to construct a detector sensitive to single gravitons, and in fact a variety of existing and near-term gravitational wave detectors can achieve this. However, while such a signal would be consistent with the quantization of the gravitational field, we draw on results from quantum optics to show how the same signal could just as well be explained via classical gravitational waves. We outline the kind of measurements that would be needed to demonstrate quantization of gravitational radiation and explain why these are substantially more difficult than simply counting graviton clicks or observing gravitational noise in an interferometer, and likely impossible to perform in practice. Collapse of neutrino wave functions under Penrose gravitational reduction

Models of spontaneous wave function collapse have been postulated to address the measurement problem in quantum mechanics. Their primary function is to convert coherent quantum superpositions into incoherent ones, with the result that macroscopic objects cannot be placed into widely separated superpositions for observably prolonged times. Many of these processes will also lead to loss of coherence in neutrino oscillations, producing observable signatures in the flavor profile of neutrinos at long travel distances. The majority of studies of neutrino oscillation coherence to date have focused on variants of the continuous state localization model, whereby an effective decoherence strength parameter is used to model the rate of coherence loss with an assumed energy dependence. Another class of collapse models that have been proposed posit connections to the configuration of gravitational field accompanying the mass distribution associated with each wave function that is in the superposition. A particularly interesting and prescriptive model is Penrose’s description of gravitational collapse which proposes a decoherence time τ determined through E g τ ∼ ℏ , where E g is a calculable function of the Newtonian gravitational potential. Here we explore application of the Penrose collapse model to neutrino oscillations, reinterpreting previous experimental limits on neutrino decoherence in terms of this model. We identify effects associated with both spatial collapse and momentum diffusion, finding that the latter is ruled out in data from the IceCube South Pole Neutrino Observatory so long as the neutrino wave packet width at production is σ ν , x ≤ 2 × 10 − 12 m . Absorptive effects and classical black hole scattering

Abstract We describe an approach to incorporating the physical effects of the absorption of energy by the event horizon of black holes in the scattering amplitudes based post-Minkowskian, point-particle effective description. Absorptive dynamics are incorporated in a model-independent way by coupling the usual point-particle description to an invisible sector of gapless internal degrees-of-freedom. The leading order dynamics of this sector are encoded in the low-energy expansion of a spectral density function obtained by matching an absorption cross section in the ultraviolet description. This information is then recycled using the scattering amplitudes based Kosower-Maybee-O’Connell in-in formalism to calculate the leading absorptive contribution to the impulse and change in rest mass of a Schwarzschild black hole scattering with a second compact body sourcing a massless scalar, electromagnetic or gravitational field. The results obtained are in complete agreement with previous worldline Schwinger-Keldysh calculations and provide an alternative on-shell scattering amplitudes approach to incorporating horizon absorption effects in the gravitational two-body problem.

Quantum-gravitational null Raychaudhuri equation

Abstract We consider a congruence of null geodesics in the presence of a quantized spacetime metric. The coupling to a quantum metric induces fluctuations in the congruence; we calculate the change in the area of a pencil of geodesics induced by such fluctuations. For the gravitational field in its vacuum state, we find that quantum gravity contributes a correction to the null Raychaudhuri equation which is of the same sign as the classical terms. We thus derive a quantum-gravitational focusing theorem valid for linearized quantum gravity.

Effective gravitational couplings of four-dimensional $ \mathcal{N} $ = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories

The low energy effective couplings of a four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theory to topological invariants of the background gravitational field are described by two functions A and B. These two functions play an important role in the study of topologically twisted four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories and in the computation of central charges of N = 2 superconformal theories. In this paper, we compute A and B from the partition function in the Ω-background for SU(2) gauge theories. Our results not only confirm the predicted expressions of the effective gravitational couplings, but also give the previously undetermined overall multiplicative factors. We also analyze A and B for the SU(N) super-Yang-Mills theory, and confirm all the previous predictions.

Mascon distribution techniques for asteroids and comets

The mass-concentration model is an approach that has been used to model the gravitational fields of irregularly shaped bodies such as asteroids and comets. By this approach, the body is treated as a collection of point masses. The method is conceptually simple, easy to program, valid down to the surface, and capable of modeling arbitrary density heterogeneities. How the mass concentrations are distributed as well as how mass is assigned to these concentrations is, however, nontrivial. These aspects significantly affect the accuracy and efficiency of the gravitational model. In this paper, we frame the distribution process in terms of numerical integration applied to finite volume meshes. We describe a new method using unstructured, curvilinear, finite volume meshes to significantly improve the accuracy of the mass-concentration model. We then compare the accuracy and efficiency of several variations of our distribution technique to those from literature using Asteroid Eros and Bennu as example bodies. Our results show that the mascon model can be as accurate as the analytic polyhedral model at the surface using an equivalent number of computational elements—i.e., mascon to surface facets. We report the improvement in the model’s performance can be mainly attributed to the volume mesh topology while mesh curving can provide modest case-dependent improvements.

Gravitational wave spectrum of chain inflation

Chain inflation is an alternative to slow-roll inflation in which the inflaton tunnels along a large number of consecutive minima in its potential. In this work we perform the first comprehensive calculation of the gravitational wave (GW) spectrum of chain inflation. In contrast to slow-roll inflation the latter does not stem from quantum fluctuations of the gravitational field during inflation, but rather from the bubble collisions during the first-order phase transitions associated with vacuum tunneling. Our calculation is performed within an effective theory of chain inflation which builds on an expansion of the tunneling rate capturing most of the available model space. The effective theory can be seen as chain inflation’s analog of the slow-roll expansion in rolling models of inflation. The near scale-invariance of the scalar power spectrum translates to a quasiperiodic shape of the inflaton potential in chain inflation, with the tunneling rate changing very slowly during the e-folds leading to cosmic microwave background observables. We show that chain inflation produces a very characteristic double-peak GW spectrum: a faint high-frequency peak associated with the gravitational radiation emitted during inflation, and a strong low-frequency peak associated with the graceful exit from chain inflation (marking the transition to the radiation-dominated epoch). There exist very exciting prospects to test the gravitational wave signal from chain inflation at the aLIGO-aVIRGO-KAGRA network, at LISA and /or at pulsar timing array experiments. A particularly intriguing possibility we point out is that chain inflation could be the source of the stochastic gravitational wave background recently detected by NANOGrav, PPTA, EPTA, and CPTA. We also show that the gravitational wave signal of chain inflation is often accompanied by running/ higher running of the scalar spectral index to be tested at future cosmic microwave background experiments. Leading nonlinear tidal effects and scattering amplitudes

We present the two-body Hamiltonian and associated eikonal phase, to leading post-Minkowskian order, for infinitely many tidal deformations described by operators with arbitrary powers of the curvature tensor. Scattering amplitudes in momentum and position space provide systematic complementary approaches. For the tidal operators quadratic in curvature, which describe the linear response to an external gravitational field, we work out the leading post-Minkowskian contributions using a basis of operators with arbitrary numbers of derivatives which are in one-to-one correspondence with the worldline multipole operators. Explicit examples are used to show that the same techniques apply to both bodies interacting tidally with a spinning particle, for which we find the leading contributions from quadratic in curvature tidal operators with an arbitrary number of derivatives, and to effective field theory extensions of general relativity. We also note that the leading post-Minkowskian order contributions from higher-dimension operators manifest double-copy relations. Finally, we comment on the structure of higher-order corrections.

Cluster Structures with Machine Learning Support in Neutron Star M-R relations

Neutron stars (NS) are compact objects with strong gravitational fields, and a matter composition subject to extreme physical conditions. The properties of strongly interacting matter at ultra-high densities and temperatures impose a big challenge to our understanding and modelling tools. Some difficulties are critical, since one cannot reproduce such conditions in our laboratories or assess them purely from astronomical observations. The information we have about neutron star interiors are often extracted indirectly, e.g., from the star mass-radius relation. The mass and radius are global quantities and still have a significant uncertainty, which leads to great variability in studying the micro-physics of the neutron star interior. This leaves open many questions in nuclear astrophysics and the suitable equation of state (EoS) of NS. Recently, new observations appear to constrain the mass-radius and consequently has helped to close some open questions. In this work, utilizing modern machine learning techniques, we analyze the NS mass-radius (M-R) relationship for a set of EoS containing a variety of physical models. Our objective is to determine patterns through the M-R data analysis and develop tools to understand the EoS of neutron stars in forthcoming works.

Revisit NGC 5466 tidal stream with Gaia , SDSS/SEGUE, and LAMOST

ABSTRACT By mining the data from Gaia Early Data Release 3, Sloan Digital Sky Survey/Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration Data Release 16, and Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope Data Release 8, 11 member stars of the NGC 5466 tidal stream are detected and 7 of them are newly identified. To reject contaminators, a variety of cuts are applied in sky position, colour–magnitude diagram, metallicity, proper motion, and radial velocity. We compare our data to a mock stream generated by modelling the cluster’s disruption under a smooth Galactic potential plus the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The concordant trends in phase space between the model and observations imply that the stream might have been perturbed by the LMC. The two most distant stars among the 11 detected members trace the stream’s length to 60° of sky, supporting and extending the previous length of 45°. Given that NGC 5466 is so distant and potentially has a longer tail than previously thought, we expect that the NGC 5466 tidal stream could be a useful tool in constraining the Milky Way gravitational field.

Unified bulk semiclassical theory for intrinsic thermal transport and magnetization currents

In this work, we reveal the unexpected role of the material inhomogeneity in unifying the formulation of intrinsic thermal and thermoelectric transport as well as magnetization currents. The smooth inhomogeneity leads to the position dependent local band dispersion and phase-space Berry curvature, enabling a general and rapid access to transport and magnetization currents displaying the momentum-space Berry curvature physics. Our theory does not invoke the boundary current, the thermodynamic approach to magnetization or any mechanical counterpart of statistical forces. By introducing a fictitious inhomogeneity, it applies to homogeneous samples as well, promoting the inhomogeneity to be a basic trick in semiclassical transport theories. Such a trick works regardless of the driving force of transport, e.g., temperature gradient, in contrast to the trick of fictitious gravitational field in quantum transport theories. We thus include more general mechanical driving forces and establish the Mott relation between the resulting transport thermal and electric currents, whereas this relation for these two currents was previously only known when an electric field is the driving force.

Constraints on f ( R ) and normal-branch Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati modified gravity model parameters with cluster abundances and galaxy clustering

In this report we present forecasted cosmological constraints from combined measurements of galaxy cluster abundances from the Simons Observatory and galaxy clustering from a DESI-like experiment on two well-studied modified gravity models, the chameleon-screened Hu-Sawicki f(R) model and the nDGP braneworld Vainshtein model. A Fisher analysis is conducted using σ 8 constraints derived from thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (tSZ) selected galaxy clusters as well as linear and quasilinear redshift-space 2-point galaxy correlation functions. We find that the cluster abundances drive the constraints on the nDGP model while f(R) constraints are led by galaxy clustering. The two tracers of the cosmological gravitational field are found to be complementary, and their combination significantly improves constraints on the f(R) in particular in comparison to each individual tracer alone. For a model of f(R) with a general relativity (GR) fiducial case (f R0 = 0), we find a 2-σ upper limit of f R0 ≤ 5.68 x10 -7 . For the well-studied log-based fiducial parameter value in f(R), log 10 (f R0 ) = -5, paired with the parameter value n = 1, we find combined 1-σ constraints of σ(log 10 (f R0 )) = 0.12 and σ(n) = 0.36. For the nDGP model with fiducial n nDGP = 1 we find σ( n nDGP ) = 0.087. Our results present the exciting potential to utilize upcoming galaxy and CMB survey data available in the near future to discern and/or constrain cosmic deviations from GR.

G objects and primordial black holes

We suggest that "G objects" recently discovered in the Galactic Center may be clouds of gas bound by the gravitational field of stellar-mass black holes produced in the interactions of sublunar primordial black holes with neutron stars. If dark matter is composed of primordial black holes with masses (10 –16 –10 –10 )M ⊙ , these black holes can be captured by neutron stars in the Galactic Center, where the dark matter density is high. After the capture, the neutron star is consumed by the black hole, resulting in a population of (1–2)M ⊙ black holes. Furthermore, these stellar-mass black holes, accompanied by gaseous atmospheres, can account for the observed properties of the G objects, including their resilience to tidal disruption by the supermassive black hole in the Galactic Center while also producing emission consistent with inferred luminosities.

Terrestrial density of strongly-coupled relics

The simplest cosmologies motivate the consideration of dark matter subcomponents that interact significantly with normal matter. Moreover, such strongly coupled relics may have evaded detection to date if upon encountering the Earth they rapidly thermalize down to terrestrial temperatures, T ⊕ ∼ 300 K ∼ 25 meV , well below the thresholds of most existing dark matter detectors. This shedding of kinetic energy implies a drastic enhancement to the local density, motivating the consideration of alternative detection techniques sensitive to a large density of slowly moving dark matter particles. In this work, we provide a rigorous semianalytic derivation of the terrestrial overdensities of strongly coupled relics, with a particular focus on millicharged particles (MCPs). We go beyond previous studies by incorporating improved estimates of the MCP-atomic scattering cross section, new contributions to the terrestrial density of sub-GeV relics that are independent of the Earth’s gravitational field, and local modifications that can arise due to the cryogenic environments of precision sensors. We also generalize our analysis in order to estimate the terrestrial density of thermalized MCPs that are produced from the collisions of high-energy cosmic rays and become bound by the Earth’s electric field.
