G4CMP: Condensed matter physics simulation using the G$\scriptsize{\mathrm{EANT}}$4 toolkit

G4CMP simulates phonon and charge transport in cryogenic semiconductor crystals using the Geant4 toolkit. The transport code is capable of simulating the propagation of acoustic phonons as well as electron and hole charge carriers. Herein processes for anisotropic phonon propagation, oblique charge-carrier propagation, and phonon emission by accelerated charge carriers are included. The simulation reproduces theoretical predictions and experimental observations such as phonon caustics, heat-pulse propagation times, and mean charge-carrier drift velocities. In addition to presenting the physics and features supported by G4CMP, this report outlines example applications from the dark matter and quantum information science communities. These communities are applying G4CMP to model and design devices for which the energy transported by phonons and charge carriers is germane to the performance of superconducting instruments and circuits placed on silicon and germanium substrates. The G4CMP package is available to download from GitHub: github.com/kelseymh/G4CMP.

Geant4 Material Definition

In Geant4, materials are defined using elements (G4Element) and isotopes (G4Isotope), supporting both single-element compositions and multi-element molecules or mixtures (by mass fraction). Each material is characterized by a mandatory density condition and optional parameters, such as state, temperature, and pressure. To simplify material definition and ensure accuracy, the G4NistManager is recommended for retrieving elements and materials from the NIST Material Database. These features make material specification in Geant4 flexible, efficient and consistent for describing complex detector geometry descriptions.

Overview of Geant4 Physics

Geant4 is a powerful toolkit for simulating particle interactions across a wide energy range (0 to ~TeV). It offers comprehensive physics processes for various particle types, allowing users to define custom processes using the G4VProcess interface. Major categories include electromagnetic, hadronic, decay, parameterized processes, and transportation. A critical feature is the PhysicsList, which specifies particles and processes for simulations. Users can choose between G4VUserPhysicsList for simpler environments or G4VModularPhysicsList for more complex scenarios, leveraging pre-defined or custom G4VPhysicsConstructors. Additionally, Geant4 provides reference physics lists and the G4PhysicsListFactory for well-established applications, facilitating simulation development in diverse domains.

Benchmarking a Defeatured Geant4 NIF Model with HTOAD and HNED Neutron Data

This study benchmarks a simplified Geant4 NIF Target Chamber (TC) model against foil measurements in two instruments: the HTOAD and HNED Snout. The number of product atoms per source neutron per gram ( N 0 /n/g ) is compared across multiple locations and material configurations. The model reproduces high energy threshold reactions dominated by 14 MeV neutrons to within a few percent, depending on location. Discrepancies occur where scattering and moderation are significant for low energy threshold reactions. The defeatured Geant4 model achieves comparable statistical precision with ∼400 times less CPU time than a full fidelity TC model in MCNP. The results can be produced locally on a laptop without the need for high performance computing. Low energy biasing can be improved by preserving room return pathways and implementing IRDFF cross section evaluations.

GADRAS + Geant4 Simulated Gamma Spectra Dataset

This dataset contains GADRAS and Geant4 simulated gamma-ray energy spectra used in the papers "Sim-to-real supervised domain adaptation for radioisotope identification" (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.nima.2025.171159) and "Unsupervised domain adaptation for radioisotope identification in gamma spectroscopy" (https://arxiv.org/abs/2603.05719). Each spectrum contains a mixture of several different radioisotopes, and the goal of the analysis is to leverage domain adaptation techniques to use a model trained on source-domain spectra (GADRAS) to classify target-domain spectra (Geant4).

Combining Particle Tracking with Electromagnetic Radiation Showers: Merging GPT and Geant4 with Visualization

Field emitted electrons can seriously affect the operation of high-field, high-duty factor electron accelerators. Accelerated field emission can result in high average power beams which can radiation damage beamline components. In addition, localized losses generate thermal hot spots whose outgassing degrades the ultra-high vacuum required in photoinjectors and cryomodules. However, despite their importance, the effects of field emission are rarely included in the design and engineering of electron injectors. This work attempts to remedy this situation by combining two well-known and well-documented programs, GPT and Geant4, to track electrons and their losses in an injector beamline. This paper describes a system of programs which simulates electron paths and losses along the beamline. In addition, the tracking results can be zoomed and panned along and about the beampipe envelope using an open-source 3D CAD program. The scattering albedo calculations of the combined program, GPT-Geant4, are shown to be in good agreement with the literature albedos. The paper concludes with a dark current simulation for the LCLS-II injector from the cathode to the collimator at 1.5 m from the cathode.

Simulation of dark bremsstrahlung in Geant4

A technique for the simulation of dark bremsstrahlung for electrons and muons in GEANT4 is presented. The total cross section is calculated using the Weizsäcker-Williams approximation and the outgoing kinematics are produced by scaling events produced in MadGraph/MadEvent to lower incident lepton energies, allowing the simulation to account for thick targets and lepton sources without fixed energies. In conclusion, compared with dedicated samples produced at an arbitrary particle energy, typical precision of better than 5% is achieved.

Initial validation of ALFRED: A Monte Carlo code built on Geant4 for TREAT energy deposition

Predicting the energy deposited in the specimen during an experiment in the Transient Reactor Test (TREAT) Facility is a complex problem due to the nature of the transients occurring in the reactor. In addition, the many particles contributing to energy deposition have different behavior in time and space. ALFRED, a new Geant4 based code, is developed to transport and simulate each particle generated in the core. This code is verified against OpenMC (Open Monte Carlo) on the Godiva benchmark and a simple TREAT model. Next, the energy deposition in TREAT is calculated: 181.05 ± 0.01 MeV for the “instantaneous” energy deposition (which accounts for the energy deposited within 1 s after neutron emission) in fuel and 189.90 ± 0.01 MeV for the total energy deposition in fuel. We discuss these results in this paper with previous calculations and experimental evaluations. This work demonstrates ALFRED’s potential as a high-fidelity tool for computing the spatial and temporal energy deposition in TREAT paving the way for a better understanding of the energy coupling factors in TREAT.

UCGretina geant4 simulation of the GRETINA Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking Array

UCGretina, a geant4 simulation of the GRETINA gamma-ray tracking array of highly-segmented high-purity germanium detectors is described. We have developed a model of the array, in particular of the Quad Module and the capsules, that gives good agreement between simulated and measured photopeak efficiencies over a broad range of gamma-ray energies and reproduces the shape of the measured Compton continuum. Both of these features are needed in order to accurately extract gamma-ray yields from spectra collected in in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements with beams traveling at v / c ≳0.3 at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory and the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams. In the process of developing the model, we determined that millimeter-scale layers of passive germanium surrounding the active volumes of the simulated crystals must be included in order to reproduce measured photopeak efficiencies. In conclusion, we adopted a simple model of effective passive layers and developed heuristic methods of determining passive-layer thicknesses by comparison of simulations and measurements for a single crystal and for the full array. Prospects for future development of the model are discussed.

Geant4 simulations of sampling and homogeneous hadronic calorimeters with dual readout for future colliders

Calorimeters with dual readout measure both scintillation and Cherenkov light produced in their active media. They offer improvements in energy resolution and, therefore, have become increasingly interesting due to the need for precision jet measurements at Higgs factories. Furthermore, this paper presents GEANT4 simulations of single-particle responses in sampling and homogeneous calorimeters, and demonstrates the effect of inclusion of Cherenkov light in the reconstruction of energies.

Geant4 Simulation of Cherenkov Photons in Perovskite CsPbBr 3 Gamma-Ray Detectors

Perovskite materials have recently attracted significant attention for hard X-ray and gamma-ray detection. Cherenkov light generated by fast electrons due to gamma-ray interaction with the material can be used to provide fast timing information. Here, in this study, we report Geant4 simulation results of Cherenkov photon generation, transport, and detection within perovskite CsPbBr3. The Cherenkov photon yield, energy spectrum and temporal distribution are investigated under different gamma-ray energy deposition within CsPbBr3. CsPbBr 3 has a similar Cherenkov photon yield as of TlBr that has demonstrated fast-timing capability based on Cherenkov light. The effect of crystal volume, surface finish and SiPM photon detection efficiency on the Cherenkov detection is also discussed. This work provides insights into Cherenkov processes of CsPbBr3.

Simulation of energy loss of fractionally charged particles using Geant4

Over the years several rare-event search experiments have shown increasing interest to search for Fractionally Charged Particles (FCPs) within the data acquired in those experiments. This, in turn, has required the need for a framework to calculate accurately the energy loss expected from FCPs as they pass through the detector material. We have developed Monte Carlo methods within Geant4 to simulate for the first time energy loss of FCPs through different physics processes. The program can be used to calculate energy deposition distributions, a major component of any FCP search analysis, as they interact with detector material. We discuss the implementation and validation of the energy loss of FCPs using a typical detector material.
