Soft gravitons in the BFSS matrix model

BFSS proposed that asymptotically flat M-theory is dual to a large N limit of the matrix quantum mechanics describing N nonrelativistic D0-branes. Recent insights on the soft symmetries of any quantum theory of gravity in asymptotically flat space are applied to the BFSS matrix model. It is shown that soft gravitons are realized by submatrices whose rank is held fixed in the large N M-theory limit, rather than the usual linear scaling with N for hard gravitons. The soft expansion is identified with the large N expansion and the soft theorem becomes a universal formula for the quantum mechanical scattering of such submatrix excitations. This formula is shown to be the Ward identity of large type IIA U(1) RR asymptotic gauge symmetry in the matrix model, whose asymptotic boundaries are at future and past timelike infinity.

Entire four-graviton EFT from the duality between color and kinematics

The Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) double-copy construction reveals a fundamental structural connection between gauge and gravity theories. At its core, the BCJ double copy is directly due to a duality between the algebraic relations of a color root and those of a kinematic root. We generalize this principle beyond the conventional Lie algebra structure of tree-level Yang-Mills theory. By demanding color-kinematics duality for the complete basis of four-point color structures—including those involving the symmetric 𝑑 𝑎⁢𝑏⁢𝑐 constants—we define the universal double copy. We systematically classify the bases of all such parity-even generalized gauge-theory numerators and, independently, the space of all parity-even four-graviton higher-derivative operators. We demonstrate that our universal double-copy construction precisely spans the entire tower of parity-even four-graviton amplitudes in any dimension, except for the Lovelock 𝑅 3 contribution in 𝐷 > 6 which we can express in terms of a particularly simple universal triple-copy involving gauge theories coupled to scalars. Explicit machine-readable expressions for the complete basis of gauge-theory numerators and fundamental gravitational building blocks are provided in the Supplemental Material. This establishes that all possible four-point gravitational interactions can be factorized into products of gauge-theory building blocks governed by this universal notion of color-kinematics duality.

Kaluza-Klein graviton freeze-in and big bang nucleosynthesis

In models featuring extra spatial dimensions, particle collisions in the early Universe can produce Kaluza-Klein gravitons. Such particles will later decay, potentially impacting the process of big bang nucleosynthesis. In this paper, we consider scenarios in which gravity is free to propagate throughout n flat, compactified extra dimensions, while the fields of the Standard Model are confined to a ( 3 + 1 )-dimensional brane. We calculate the production and decay rates of the states that make up the Kaluza-Klein graviton tower and determine the evolution of their abundances in the early Universe. We then go on to evaluate the impact of these decays on the resulting light element abundances. We identify significant regions of previously unexplored parameter space that are inconsistent with measurements of the primordial helium and deuterium abundances. In particular, we find that for the case of one extra dimension (two extra dimensions), the fundamental scale of gravity must be M ⋆ ≳ 2 × 10 13 GeV ( M ⋆ ≳ 1 0 10 GeV ) unless the temperature of the early Universe was never greater than T ∼ 2 TeV ( T ∼ 1 GeV ). For larger values of n , these constraints are less stringent. For the case of n = 6 , for example, our analysis excludes all values of M ⋆ less than ∼ 10 6 GeV , unless the temperature of the Universe was never greater than T ∼ 3 TeV . The results presented here severely limit the possibility that black holes were efficiently produced through particle collisions in the early Universe’s thermal bath. Splitting of the Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman Density Wave and the Nature of Chiral Gravitons in the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

A fundamental manifestation of the nontrivial correlations of an incompressible fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state is that an electron added to it disintegrates into more elementary particles, namely fractionally-charged composite fermions (CFs). We show here that the Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman (GMP) density-wave excitation of the 𝜈=𝑛/(2⁢𝑝⁢𝑛±1) FQH states also splits into more elementary single CF excitons. In particular, the GMP graviton, which refers to the recently observed spin-2 neutral excitation in the vanishing wave vector limit [Liang et al., Nature 628, 78 (2024)], remains undivided for 𝜈 =𝑛/(2⁢𝑛 ±1) but splits into two gravitons at 𝜈 =𝑛/(4⁢𝑛 ±1) with 𝑛 >1. Here, a detailed experimental confirmation of the many observable consequences of the splitting of the GMP mode should provide a unique window into the correlations underlying the FQH effect.

Quantum graviton creation in a model universe

Consideration of the mechanism of production of gravitons in the empty, anisotropic, spatially inhomogeneous Gowdy three-torus cosmology. The Gowdy cosmology is an exact solution of the vacuum Einstein equations and is obtained as a generalization of the homogeneous empty Bianchi Type I (Kasner) cosmology by permitting the metric components to depend on one of the space variables in addition to time. The Hamiltonian methods of Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner are employed to identify the dynamical variables which are to be quantized. The WKB regime solution is identical to that found by Doroshkevich, Zel'dovich, and Novikov (DZN) for a universe containing collisionless anisotropic radiation. Using a procedure similar to that of Parker (1971) or Zel'dovich and Starobinskii (1971) for defining quantum number, it is found that the DZN large-time radiation consists of quanta (gravitons) created from an initial vacuum. The quantum behavior is much like the semiclassical enhancement of quantum number with the added feature of creation of quanta from vacuum fluctuations.

Hot Gravitons and Gravitational Waves From Kerr Black Holes in the Early Universe

Any abundance of black holes that was present in the early universe will evolve as matter, making up an increasingly large fraction of the total energy density as space expands. This motivates us to consider scenarios in which the early universe included an era that was dominated by low-mass ($M < 5\times 10^8$ g) black holes which evaporate prior to primordial nucleosynthesis. In significant regions of parameter space, these black holes will become gravitationally bound within binary systems, and undergo mergers before evaporating. Such mergers result in three potentially observable signatures. First, any black holes that have undergone one or more mergers will possess substantial angular momentum, causing their Hawking evaporation to produce significant quantities of high-energy gravitons. These products of Hawking evaporation are predicted to constitute a background of hot ($\sim$eV-keV) gravitons today, with an energy density corresponding to $\Delta N_{\rm eff} \sim 0.01-0.03$. Second, these mergers will produce a stochastic background of high-frequency gravitational waves. And third, the energy density of these gravitational waves can be as large as $\Delta N_{\rm eff} \sim 0.3$, depending on the length of time between the mergers and evaporation. These signals are each potentially within the reach of future measurements.

Graviton chirality and topological order in the half-filled Landau level

The fractional quantum Hall state at the Landau level filling factor 5/2 is extremely interesting because it is likely the first non-Abelian state, but its precise nature remains unclear after decades of study. Here we demonstrate this can be resolved by studying the chirality of its graviton excitations, using circularly polarized Raman scattering. We discuss the advantage of this bulk probe over the existing edge probes.

The noise of gravitons

We show that when the gravitational field is treated quantum-mechanically, it induces fluctuations — noise — in the lengths of the arms of gravitational wave detectors. Here, the characteristics of the noise depend on the quantum state of the gravitational field and can be calculated exactly in several interesting cases. For coherent states, the noise is very small, but it can be greatly enhanced in thermal and (especially) squeezed states. Detection of this fundamental noise would constitute direct evidence for the quantization of gravity and the existence of gravitons.

Conformal wavefunctions for graviton amplitudes

The extended-BMS algebra of asymptotically flat spacetime contains an SO(3, 1) subgroup that acts by conformal transformations on the celestial sphere. It is of interest to study the representations of this subgroup associated with gravitons. To reduce the equation of motion to a Schrodinger-like equation it is necessary to impose a non-covariant gauge condition. Using these solutions, leading-order gauge invariant Weyl scalars are then computed and decomposed into families of unitary principal series representations. An invertible holographic mapping is constructed between these unitary principal series operators and massless spin-2 perturbations of flat spacetime.

Effective Field Theory islands from perturbative and nonperturbative four-graviton amplitudes

Theoretical data obtained from physically sensible field and string theory models suggest that gravitational Effective Field Theories (EFTs) live on islands that are tiny compared to current general bounds determined from unitarity, causality, crossing symmetry, and a good high-energy behavior. In this work, we present explicit perturbative and nonperturbative 2 → 2 graviton scattering amplitudes and their associated low-energy expansion in spacetime dimensions D ≥ 4 to support this notion. Our new results include a first example of gravity weakly coupled to a nonperturbative effective action. We show that, at energies below the mass of its nonperturbative matter, the D = 4, $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 supersymmetric field theory in the confined phase lies on the same islands identified using four-dimensional perturbative models based on string theory and minimally-coupled matter circulating a loop. Furthermore, we generalize the previous four-dimensional perturbative models based on string theory and minimally-coupled massive spin-0 and spin-1 states circulating in the loop to D dimensions. Remarkably, we again find that the low-energy EFT coefficients lie on small islands. These results offer a useful guide towards constraining possible extensions of Einstein gravity.

Generalized symmetries of the graviton

We find the set of generalized symmetries associated with the free graviton theory in four dimensions. These are generated by gauge invariant topological operators that violate Haag duality in ring-like regions. As expected from general QFT grounds, we find a set of “electric” and a dual set of “magnetic” topological operators and compute their algebra. To do so, we describe the theory using phase space gauge-invariant electric and magnetic dual variables constructed out of the curvature tensor. Electric and magnetic fields satisfy a set of constraints equivalent to the ones of a stress tensor of a 3d CFT. The constraints give place to a group $\mathbb{R}^{20}$ of topological operators that are charged under space-time symmetries. Finally, we discuss similarities and differences between linearized gravity and tensor gauge theories that have been introduced recently in the context of fractonic systems in condensed matter physics.

The graviton four-point function in de Sitter space

We compute the tree-level late-time graviton four-point correlation function, and the related quartic wavefunction coefficient, for Einstein gravity in de Sitter spacetime. We derive this result in several ways: by direct calculation, using the in-in formalism and the wavefunction of the universe; by a heuristic derivation leveraging the flat space wave-function coefficient; and by using the boostless cosmological bootstrap, in particular the combination of the cosmological optical theorem, the amplitude limit, and the manifestly local test. We find agreement among the different methods.

Giant gravitons, Harish-Chandra integrals, and BPS states in symplectic and orthogonal $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM

We find generating functions for half BPS correlators in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SYM theories with gauge groups Sp(2N), SO(2N + 1), and SO(2N) by computing the norms of a class of BPS coherent states. These coherent states are built from operators involving Harish-Chandra integrals. Such operators have an interpretation as localized giant gravitons in the bulk of anti-de-Sitter space. This extends the analysis of [1] to Sp(2N), SO(2N + 1), and SO(2N) gauge theories. We show that we may use ordinary Schur functions as a basis for the sector of states with no cross-caps in these theories. This is consistent with the construction of these theories as orientifold projections of an SU(2N) theory. We make note of some relations between the symmetric functions that appear in the expansion of these coherent states and symplectic Schur functions. We also comment on some connections to Schubert calculus and Gromov-Witten invariants, which suggest that the Harish-Chandra integral may be extended to such problems.

Accessing the gravitational form factors of the nucleon and nuclei through a massive graviton

In contrast to the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon and nuclei that have been extensively studied in electron scattering, there is no known way to directly measure the gravitational form factors (GFFs), the off-forward hadronic matrix element of the QCD energy-momentum tensor. I suggest exploring the possibility to access the GFFs of the proton and nuclei in conjunction with massive graviton searches at future TeV-scale lepton-ion colliders. Open giant magnons suspended between dual giant gravitons in $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 SYM

We study classical solutions to the Nambu-Goto string onAdS 2 × S 1 and AdS 3 × S 1 corresponding to strings stretched between wrapped branes extending in AdS. The solutions are obtained by analytic continuation of giant magnon solutions, cut at the position of the branes. These solutions carry one or two SO(2 , 4) charges and a single SO(6) charge. We compute their energies and show their relation to $$ \frac{1}{2} $$ 1 2 -BPS geometries. Their relevance to the SL(2) sector of $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 SYM is also discussed.

The timbre of Hawking gravitons: an effective description of energy transport from holography

Planar black holes in AdS, which are holographically dual to compressible relativistic fluids, have a long-lived phonon mode that captures the physics of attenuated sound propagation and transports energy in the plasma. We describe the open effective field theory of this fluctuating phonon degree of freedom. The dynamics of the phonon is encoded in a single scalar field whose gravitational coupling has non-trivial spatial momentum dependence. This description fits neatly into the paradigm of classifying gravitational modes by their Markovianity index, depending on whether they are long-lived. The sound scalar is a non-Markovian field with index 3 - d for a d-dimensional fluid. We reproduce (and extend) the dispersion relation of the holographic sound mode to quartic order in derivatives, constructing in the process the effective field theory governing its attenuated dynamics and associated stochastic fluctuations. We also remark on the presence of additional spatially homogeneous zero modes in the gravitational problem, which remain disconnected from the phonon Goldstone mode.
