Experimental Demonstration of the Dependence of the First Hyperpolarizability of Donor-Acceptor Substituted Polyenes on the Ground-State Polarization and Bond Length Alternation

The dependence of the product of the first hyperpolarizability, beta, and the ground-state dipole moment, mu, for a series of donor-acceptor polyenes with a large range of ground-state polarization, was measured in a variety of solvents by electric field induced second harmonic generation. The observed behavior of mu times beta as a function of ground-state polarization agrees well with theoretical predictions. In particular, as a function of increasing polarization, mu times beta was found to first increase, peak in a positive sense, decrease, pass through zero, become large and negative, and eventually peak in a negative sense.

Exact Ground State of Interacting Electrons in Magic Angle Graphene

One of the most remarkable theoretical findings in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) is the emergence of ferromagnetic Slater determinants as exact ground states for the interacting Hamiltonian at the chiral limit. This discovery provides an explanation for the correlated insulating phase which has been experimentally observed at half filling. This work is the first mathematical study of interacting models in magic angle graphene systems. These include not only TBG but also TBG-like systems featuring four flat bands per valley, and twisted trilayer graphene systems with equal twist angles. We identify symmetries of the chiral limit of the Bistritzer-MacDonald Hamiltonian that are responsible for characterizing the Hartree-Fock ground states as zero energy many-body ground states. Furthermore, for a general class of Hamiltonian, we establish criteria that the ferromagnetic Slater determinants are the unique ground states within the class of uniformly half-filled, translation invariant Slater determinants. We then demonstrate that these criteria can be explicitly verified for TBG and TBG-like systems at the chiral limit, using properties of Jacobi-θ$${\theta }$$ and Weierstrass-℘$${\wp }$$ functions.

Ground-state properties of the periodic Anderson model

The ground-state energy, hybridization matrix element, local moment, and spin-density correlations of a one-dimensional, finite-chain, periodic, symmetric Anderson model are obtained by numerical simulations and compared with perturbation theory and strong-coupling results. It is found that the local f-electron spins are compensated by correlation with other f-electrons as well as band electrons leading to a nonmagnetic ground state.

Ground-state rotational constants of /C-13/H3D

Rotational constants for the vibrational ground state of (C-13)H3D, which has been detected in the atmospheres of Jupiter and Saturn, are reported. High-resolution spectra of monodeuteromethane were obtained in the region 1800 to 2500 kaysers by a vacuum Fourier interferometer, and the values of the rotational constants B0, D0J, D0JK, H0JJJ, H0JJK and H0JKK were calculated by an analysis of ground-state combination differences in the nu 2(A1) band. The calculated frequency and intensity of this transition are found to be in agreement with the observed values.

Static Properties and Stark Effect of the Ground State of the HD Molecular Ion

We have calculated static properties of the ground state of the HD(+) ion and its lowest-lying P-state without making use of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, as was done in the case of H2(+) and D2(+) [Phys. Rev. A 58, 2787 (1998)]. The ion is treated as a three-body system whose ground state is spherically symmetric. The wavefunction is of generalized Hylleraas type, but it is necessary to include high powers of the internuclear distance to localize the nuclear motion. We obtain good values of the energies of the ground S-state and lowest P-state and compare them with earlier calculations. Expectation values are obtained for various operators, the Fermi contact parameters, and the permanent quadrupole moment. The cusp conditions are also calculated. The polarizability was then calculated using second-order perturbation theory with intermediate P pseudostates. Since the nuclei in HD(+) are not of equal mass there is dipole coupling between the lowest two rotational states, which are almost degenerate. This situation is carefully analyzed, and the Stark shift is calculated variationally as a function of the applied electric field.

Biased degenerate ground-state sampling of small Ising models with converged quantum approximate optimization algorithm

The quantum alternating operator ansatz, a generalization of the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA), is a quantum algorithm used for approximately solving combinatorial optimization problems. QAOA typically uses the transverse field mixer as the driving Hamiltonian. One of the interesting properties of the transverse field driving Hamiltonian is that it results in nonuniform sampling of degenerate ground states of optimization problems. In this study, we numerically examine the fair sampling properties of the transverse field mixer QAOA, and Grover mixer QAOA (GM-QAOA), which provides theoretical guarantees of fair sampling of degenerate optimal solutions, up to a large enough p such that the mean expectation value converges to an optimal approximation ratio of 1. This comparison is performed with high-quality heuristically computed, but not necessarily optimal, QAOA angles, which give strictly monotonically improving solution quality as p increases. These angles are computed using the Julia based numerical simulation software JuliQAOA. Fair sampling of degenerate ground states is quantified using the Shannon entropy of the ground-state amplitudes distribution. The fair sampling properties are reported on several quantum signature Hamiltonians from previous quantum annealing fair sampling studies. Small random fully connected spin glasses are shown, which exhibit exponential suppression of some degenerate ground states with transverse field mixer QAOA. The transverse field mixer QAOA simulations show that some problem instances clearly saturate the Shannon entropy of 0 with a maximally biased distribution that occurs when the learning converges to an approximation ratio of 1 while other problem instances never deviate from a maximum Shannon entropy (uniform distribution) at any p step. On the hardness of learning ground state entanglement of geometrically local Hamiltonians

Characterizing the entanglement structure of ground states of local Hamiltonians is a fundamental problem in quantum information. In this work we study the computational complexity of this problem, given the Hamiltonian as input. Our main result is that to show it is cryptographically hard to determine if the ground state of a geometrically local, polynomially gapped Hamiltonian on qudits (d=O(1)) has near-area law vs near-volume law entanglement. This improves prior work of Bouland et al. (arXiv:2311.12017) showing this for non-geometrically local Hamiltonians. In particular we show this problem is roughly factoring-hard in 1D, and LWE-hard in 2D. Our proof works by constructing a novel form of public-key pseudo-entanglement which is highly space-efficient, and combining this with a modification of Gottesman and Irani's quantum Turing machine to Hamiltonian construction. Our work suggests that the problem of learning so-called "gapless" quantum phases of matter might be intractable.

Accurate ab initio calculations which demonstrate a 3 Pi u ground state for Al2

The spectroscopic parameters and separations between the three low-lying X 3 Pi u, A 3 Sigma g -, and a 1 Sigma g + states of Al2 are studied as a function of both the one-particle and n-particle basis set. Approximate correlation treatments are calibrated against full Cl calculations correlating the six valence electrons in a double-zeta plus two d-function basis set. Since the CASSCF/MRCI 3 Pi u to 3 Sigma g - separation is in excellent agreement wtih the FCI value, the MRCI calculations were carried out in an extended (20s13p6d4f)/(6s5p3d2f) gaussian basis. Including a small correction for relativistic effects, the best estimate is that 3 Sigma g - state lies 174/cm above the 3 Pi u ground state. The 1 Sigma g + state lies at least 2000/cm higher in energy. At the CPF level, inclusion of 2s and 2p correlation has little effect on D sub e, reduces T sub e by only 26/cm, and shortens the bond lengths by about 0.02 a sub o. Further strong support for a 3 Pi u ground state comes from the experimental absorption spectra, since both observed transitions can be convincingly assigned as 3 Pi u yields 3 Pi g. The (2) 3 Pi g state is observed to be sensitive to the level of correlation treatment, and to have its minimum shifted to shorter rho values, such that the strongest experimental absorption peak probably corresponds to the 0 yields 2 transition.

Autioionizing states in the photionization of the 3s(2)3p(4) (3)Pe ground state of sulfur

The partial and total photoionization cross sections for the S(3s/2/3p/4/ /3/Pe) ground state are calculated in both the dipole length and velocity forms. The prominent features in the cross sections are the autoionization Rydberg series converging to S+(3s/2/p/3/ /2/D/0/, /2/P/0/) excited-state thresholds. The results are pertinent to the study of sulfur in the plasma of Jupiter's satellite Io.

Quasi-static magnetospheric MHD processes and the 'ground state' of the magnetosphere

The possible existence of a theoretically well-defined ground state of the earth's magnetosphere is discussed in the context of magnetic equilibrium and convection theories. The quasi-static MHD theory is reviewed and a two-dimensional model is used to show that the convecting magnetosphere can reach a steady state. It is suggested that, under the influence of convection, magnetic substorms occur periodically in the magnetosphere and are an integral part of the entire convection cycle. The concept of the ground state of the magnetosphere is examined. The term 'average magnetosphere', is proposed for defining a baseline configuration that corresponds to average solar wind conditions.

Crystal field splittings and magnetic ground state of the square-lattice antiferromagnets YbBi 2 ⁢ClO 4 and YbBi 2 ⁢IO 4 with J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$

Here, we report on the crystal field level splitting and magnetic ground state of the J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ square lattice antiferromagnets YbBi 2 ⁢ClO 4 and YbBi 2 ⁢IO 4 using powder inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and neutron diffraction measurements. Both compounds exhibit a well-isolated Γ 7 doublet ground state under a tetragonal crystal field environment, confirming a robust J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ picture with slight XY-type anisotropic character in the g-tensor. Notably, the ground state wave functions closely resemble the Γ 7 doublet expected in the perfect cubic limit, consistent with the nearly cubic ligand configuration of eight O 2- ions surrounding Yb 3+ . Below T N = 0.21 K, YbBi 2 ⁢IO 4 exhibits a stripe long-range magnetic order characterized by an ordering wave vector q m = (1/2, 0, 0) or its symmetry-equivalent (0, 1/2, 0), with magnetic moments aligned along q m . The ordered moment is approximately 79% of the classical prediction, significantly larger than expected from the isotropic J 1 -J 2 model, suggesting the possible involvement of exchange anisotropy in explaining this observation. We show that symmetry-allowed XXZ and bond-dependent anisotropic exchange terms in a square lattice can play a critical role in stabilizing the stripe order and suppressing the moment reduction as observed. These findings establish YbBi 2 ⁢ClO 4 and YbBi 2 ⁢IO 4 as unique platforms for exploring rich J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ magnetism from two less investigated perspectives: (i) on a square lattice and (ii) within a (nearly) cubic ligand environment.

Is there a maser in the silicon monoxide ground state

Observations are reported of weak emission from the ground vibrational state of SiO in the Orion molecular cloud. It is shown that this emission has a rather smooth low-intensity profile extending over a large velocity range and is present at velocities where maser emissions from the first and second vibrational states are absent. Based on this difference, the present emission is interpreted as thermal emission in the ground state in regions where there is insufficient excitation to produce the vibrationally excited masers. Possible origins are considered for the Orion SiO maser, and it is noted that only VY CMa shows a profile that could be interpreted as ground-state maser emission.

Theoretical Electric Dipole Moments and Dissociation Energies for the Ground States of GaH-BrH

Reliable experimental diople moments are available for the ground states of SeH and BrH whereas no values have been reported for GaH and AsH a recently reported experimental dipole moment for GeH of 1.24 + or -0.01 D has been seriously questioned, and a much lower value of, 0.1 + or - 0.05 D, suggested. In this work, we report accurate theoretical dipole moments, dipole derivatives, dissociation energies, and spectroscopic constants (tau(sub e), omega(sub e)) for the ground states of GaH through BrH.

Ground state properties of solid and liquid spin-aligned atomic hydrogen

Calculations of the ground state energy in the solid phase were performed with the aid of a variational approach. The Morse potential form of the atomic triple potential computed by Kolos and Wolniewicz (1965) was employed for the calculations. The ground state energies of both the liquid and solid phases of spin-aligned atomic hydrogen around the volume of the transition are presented in a graph.

Raman Sideband Cooling of Molecules in an Optical Tweezer Array to the 3D Motional Ground State

Ultracold polar molecules are promising for quantum information processing and searches for physics beyond the standard model. Laser cooling to ultracold temperatures is an established technique for trapped diatomic and triatomic molecules. Further cooling of the molecules to near the motional ground state is crucial for reducing various dephasings in quantum and precision applications. In this work, we demonstrate Raman sideband cooling (RSC) of CaF molecules in optical tweezers to near their motional ground state, with average motional occupation quantum numbers of n ¯ x = 0.16 ( 12 ) , n ¯ y = 0.17 ( 17 ) (radial directions), and n ¯ z = 0.22 ( 16 ) (axial direction), and a 3-D motional-ground-state probability of 54 ± 18 % of the molecules that survive the RSC. This process paves the way to increase molecular coherence times in optical tweezers for robust quantum computation and simulation applications. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
