Global particle buildup simulations with gas puff scan: application to WEST discharge

This paper deals with the distribution of sources, transport, and exhaust of particles in a tokamak. Knowledge and understanding of all the physical phenomena involved in the global particle buildup are necessary to study and predict density regimes and subsequently to develop optimized scenarios for tokamak operation in order to control heat and particle exhaust. Neutral particles and their interactions with plasma are central in this perspective. This paper discusses the impact of varying the intensity of particle fueling in 2D transport simulations of a WEST discharge. Simulations are performed with an updated version of SOLEDGE-HDG that allows a more realistic transport of neutrals using a self-consistent diffusive model based on charge exchange and ionization processes. New code capabilities allow the entire WEST poloidal cross section to be simulated in a realistic configuration for both geometry and the range of control parameters. A gas puff scan illustrates the main features of the sheath-limited, high-recycling, and detached regimes, such as the buildup of the temperature gradient and the pressure drop in the scrape-off layer (SOL), the target temperature falling to 1 eV, and the ionization source moving away from the targets, as well as the particle flux rollover. A crude estimate of wall erosion is also provided, showing the respective role of each plasma wall component in each of these regimes.

Evaluation of Corrosion and Its Impact on the Mechanical Performance of Al–Steel Joints

Aluminum–steel joints are increasingly used in the automotive industry to meet the requirements for energy saving and emission reduction. Among various joining technologies, self-pierce riveting (SPR) and resistance spot welding (RSW) are two well-established technologies for fabricating dissimilar joints with stable and high mechanical performance. However, corrosion will occur in these joints inevitably due to different electrochemical properties, which can degrade the surface quality and the mechanical performance, such as strength. This paper presents a method of understanding the corrosion mechanisms in joining aluminum and steel. For this understanding, a hybrid method combining experimental observations, mechanical properties identification, and analytical approaches was used to assess the evolution of the impact of corrosion on the joining performance, such as traction separation curves. The study was conducted on common combinations used in the vehicles, e.g., a 1.2 mm thickness aluminum alloy (AA 6022) and 2.0 mm thickness hot deep galvanized steel (HDG HSLA 340) joined by SPR and RSW. After the fabrication of these joints, accelerated cyclic corrosion tests of up to 104 cycles were performed, which reproduced the environmental conditions to which a vehicle was exposed. By investigating the microstructural evolution within the joints, the corrosion mechanisms of SPR and RSW joints were revealed, including the initiation and propagation. Moreover, the intrinsic impact of the corrosion on the mechanical performance, including the strength, axial stiffness, and crashworthiness, was analyzed by performing a lap-shear test. It showed that as corrosion proceeds, the fracture modes and mechanical performance are affected significantly.

PIFCGT: A PIF autopilot design program for general aviation aircraft

This report documents the PIFCGT computer program. In FORTRAN, PIFCGT is a computer design aid for determing Proportional-Integral-Filter (PIF) control laws for aircraft autopilots implemented with a Command Generator Tracker (CGT). The program uses Linear-Quadratic-Regulator synthesis algorithms to determine feedback gains, and includes software to solve the feedforward matrix equation which is useful in determining the command generator tracker feedforward gains. The program accepts aerodynamic stability derivatives and computes the corresponding aerodynamic linear model. The nine autopilot modes that can be designed include four maneuver modes (ROLL SEL, PITCH SEL, HDG SEL, ALT SEL), four final approach models (APR GS, APR LOCI, APR LOCR, APR LOCP), and a BETA HOLD mode. The program has been compiled and executed on a CDC computer.

Adaptive Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin discretization of the Grad–Shafranov equation by extension from polygonal subdomains

In this work, we propose a high-order adaptive numerical solver for the semilinear elliptic boundary value problem modeling magnetic plasma equilibrium in axisymmetric confinement devices. In the fixed boundary case, the equation is posed on curved domains with piecewise smooth curved boundaries that may present corners. The solution method we present is based on the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method and sidesteps the need for geometry-conforming triangulations thanks to a transfer technique that allows to approximate the solution using only a polygonal subset as computational domain. Moreover, the solver features automatic mesh refinement driven by a residual-based a posteriori error estimator. As the mesh is locally refined, the computational domain is automatically updated in order to always maintain the distance between the actual boundary and the computational boundary of the order of the local mesh diameter. Numerical evidence is presented of the suitability of the estimator as an approximate error measure for physically relevant equilibria with pressure pedestals, internal transport barriers, and current holes on realistic geometries.

4.0 MOOSE: Enabling massively parallel Multiphysics simulation

Approaching 18 years of existence, MOOSE—the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment—is being developed at a higher pace than ever before. With significant support from four research institutions across the globe, and dozens of new contributors, the capabilities of the framework are being expanded to meet modeling challenges in a wide variety of fields from nuclear system design, to geomechanics, to material science. This includes new development in equation discretization techniques, solver methods, meshing capabilities, application deployment, and user interface improvements. Applications built on MOOSE benefit from all these improvements.
