Deuteration removes quantum dipolar defects from KDP crystals

Abstract Dielectric properties of the hydrogen-bonded ferroelectric crystal KH 2 PO 4 (KDP) differ significantly from those of KD 2 PO 4 (DKDP). It is well established that deuteration affects the interplay of hydrogen-bond switches and heavy ion displacements that underlie the emergence of macroscopic polarization, but a detailed microscopic model is missing. We show that all-atom path integral molecular dynamics simulations can predict the isotope effects, revealing the microscopic mechanism that differentiates KDP and DKDP. Proton tunneling generates phosphate configurations that do not contribute to the polarization. At low temperatures, these quantum dipolar defects are substantial in KDP but negligible in DKDP. These intrinsic defects explain why KDP has lower spontaneous polarization and transition entropy than DKDP. The prominent role of quantum fluctuations in KDP is related to the unusual strength of the hydrogen bonds and should be equally important in other crystals of the KDP family, which exhibit similar isotope effects.

Superionic-like diffusion in yttrium dihydride

For the next-generation high temperature microreactors, yttrium dihydride (YH 2 ) is an attractive solid state neutron moderator. Despite a number of recent investigations, the mechanism of hydrogen transport remains poorly understood. Experimental evaluations of diffusivity are inconclusive with large variations in diffusivities and activation energies. In this work, we perform ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations on YH 2 for temperatures spanning 300 K to 1200 K. Our main finding is that YH 2 shows a superionic-like behavior with hydrogen atoms hopping from one native site to another above a characteristic temperature of 800 K. This correlated motion results in quasi-one-dimensional string-like displacements that enable the hydrogen atoms to diffuse rapidly. We confirm that the octahedral sites are mostly unoccupied, although channeling through them is the most favored pathway between lattice hops above 800 K. At the highest temperature of 1200 K, the string relaxation time is merely of the order of a few picoseconds, which indicates a liquid-like diffusive behavior. Based on the formation of spontaneous thermal vacancies, an order-disorder crossover temperature T α ~ 800 K is established for YH 2 with an activation energy of 0.83 eV for hydrogen diffusion in the superionic-like state.

Dispersion of cryogenic hydrogen through high-aspect ratio nozzles

Liquid hydrogen is increasingly being used as a delivery and storage medium for stations that provide compressed gaseous hydrogen for fuel cell electric vehicles. In efforts to provide scientific justification for separation distances for liquid hydrogen infrastructure in fire codes, the dispersion characteristics of cryogenic hydrogen jets (50–64 K) from high aspect ratio nozzles have been measured at 3 and 5 bar abs stagnation pressures. These nozzles are more characteristic of unintended leaks, which would be expected to be cracks, rather than conventional round nozzles. Spontaneous Raman scattering was used to measure the concentration and temperature field along the major and minor axes. Within the field of interrogation, the axis-switching phenomena was not observed, but rather a self-similar Gaussian-profile flow regime similar to room temperature or cryogenic hydrogen releases through round nozzles. The concentration decay rate and half-widths for the planar cryogenic jets were found to be nominally equivalent to that of round nozzle cryogenic hydrogen jets indicating a similar flammable envelope. The results from these experiments will be used to validate models for cryogenic hydrogen dispersion that will be used for simulations of alternative scenarios and quantitative risk assessment.

Morphological Transitions of a Photoswitchable Aramid Amphiphile Nanostructure

Self-assembly of small amphiphilic molecules in water can lead to nanostructures of varying geometries with pristine internal molecular organization. Here we introduce a photoswitchable aramid amphiphile (AA), designed to exhibit extensive hydrogen bonding and robust mechanical properties upon self-assembly, while containing a vinylnitrile group for photoinduced cis-trans isomerization. We demonstrate spontaneous self-assembly of the vinylnitrile-containing AA in water to form nanoribbons. Upon UV irradiation, trans-to-cis isomerizations occur concomitantly with a morphological transition from nanoribbons to nanotubes. The nanotube structure persists in water for over six months, stabilized by strong and collective intermolecular interactions. We demonstrate that the nanoribbon-to-nanotube transition is reversible upon heating and that switching between states can be achieved repeatedly. Finally, we use electron microscopy to capture the transition and propose mechanisms for nanoribbon-to-nanotube rearrangement and vice versa. This stability and switchability of photoresponsive AA nanostructures make them viable for a range of future applications.

Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction on earth abundant 2D Mo 2 C and Ti 3 C 2 MXenes

Mo 2 C and Ti 3 C 2 MXenes were investigated as earth-abundant electrocatalyts for the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). Mo 2 C and Ti 3 C 2 exhibited faradaic efficiencies of 90% (250 mV overpotential) and 65% (650 mV overpotential), respectively, for the reduction of CO 2 to CO in acetonitrile using an ionic liquid electrolyte. The use of ionic liquid 1-ethyl-2-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate as an electrolyte in organic solvent suppressed the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the catalytic active sites are oxygen vacancy sites on both MXene surfaces. Also, a spontaneous dissociation of adsorbed COOH species to a water molecule and adsorbed CO on Mo 2 C promote the CO 2 RR.

Mid-infrared Pulsed Upconversion Imaging in a Rotating Detonation Combustor

To meet the challenges associated with performing mid-InfraRed (IR) imaging in Rotating Detonation Combustors (RDCs), a novel pulsed mid-IR UpConversion Imaging (UCI) diagnostic has been implemented. UCI is an alternative to direct mid-IR detection that uses nonlinear optical frequency mixing to shift mid-IR wavelengths carrying a target image to shorter wavelengths that can be imaged with high-performance silicon-based CCD/CMOS cameras. This approach offers several favorable properties including high spectral selectivity, high temporal resolution, and superior low-light detectivity. A hydrogen-air research RDC was operated with carbon dioxide addition to allow pulsed UCI imaging of mid-IR luminosity within the combustion channel from spontaneous thermal emissions. The resulting measurements demonstrate high spatiotemporal resolution capable of imaging small structures near the supersonically propagating detonation wave front. The results show how this technique can be used to observe sharp gradients and millimeter-scale structures in the high-temperature, high-pressure zones RDC flow fields.

Characterizing Sustained Solar-to-Hydrogen Electrocatalysis at Low Cell Potentials Enabled by Crude Glycerol Oxidation

Unassisted solar-driven water electrolysis as a sustainable source for H 2 is limited by the high overpotential necessary to drive the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Crude glycerol is an extremely alkaline byproduct of biodiesel synthesis that can be valorized or refined to produce more desirable chemicals. Glycerol can also be directly oxidized on an anode, replacing water oxidation, to reduce the applied cell potential requirements of electrolytic H 2 production or CO 2 reduction. An advantage of oxidizing glycerol in its crude form is the opportunity to valorize it without initial refinement. We describe an approach to replace the OER half-reaction with the sacrificial crude glycerol electrooxidation on a layered Au–Pt–Bi electrocatalyst on a Ni substrate. Compared to compositions with fewer components, the AuPtBi–Ni electrocatalyst improved the duration of performance and reduced the overall cell potential for glycerol electrooxidation in the extreme alkaline solutions representative of crude glycerol. These enhancements facilitated extended, unassisted hydrogen evolution from crude glycerol electrolysis, even under the power of a single-junction silicon solar cell at less than 1 sun illumination. We characterized the oxidation products of crude glycerol electrolysis and the subsequent products formed spontaneously in the electrolyte in the highly alkaline solution. This analysis helps to both identify the stoichiometric limits of glycerol oxidation at the low cell potentials of interest here and to understand the chemical control imparted by electrocatalysis on the ultimate compounds formed in the crude solution. Furthermore, the results for the AuPtBi electrocatalyst show that incorporating crude glycerol oxidation into integrated electrochemical systems can simultaneously simplify their design and significantly improve solar-to-hydrogen rates.

Tetrameric self-assembling of water-lean solvents enables carbamate anhydride-based CO2 capture chemistry

Abstract Carbon capture, utilization and storage is a key yet cost-intensive technology for the fight against climate change. Single-component water-lean solvents have emerged as promising materials for post-combustion CO 2 capture, but little is known regarding their mechanism of action. Here we present a combined experimental and modelling study of single-component water-lean solvents, and we find that CO 2 capture is accompanied by the self-assembly of reverse-micelle-like tetrameric clusters in solution. This spontaneous aggregation leads to stepwise cooperative capture phenomena with highly contrasting mechanistic and thermodynamic features. The emergence of well-defined supramolecular architectures displaying a hydrogen-bonded internal core, reminiscent of enzymatic active sites, enables the formation of CO 2 -containing molecular species such as carbamic acid, carbamic anhydride and alkoxy carbamic anhydrides. This system extends the scope of adducts and mechanisms observed during carbon capture. It opens the way to materials with a higher CO 2 storage capacity and provides a means for carbamates to potentially act as initiators for future oligomerization or polymerization of CO 2 .

Stretchable and Self‐Healable Semiconductive Composites Based on Hydrogen Bonding Cross‐linked Elastomeric Matrix

Abstract Semiconductors with both high stretchability and self‐healing capability are highly desirable for various wearable devices. Much progress has been achieved in designing highly stretchable semiconductive polymers or composites. The demonstration of self‐healable semiconductive composite is still rare. Here, an extremely soft, highly stretchable, and self‐healable hydrogen bonding cross‐linked elastomer, amide functionalized‐polyisobutylene (PIB‐amide) is developed, to enable a self‐healable semiconductive composite through compounding with a high‐performance conjugated diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP‐T) polymer. The composite, consisting of 20% DPP‐T and 80% PIB‐amide, shows record high crack‐onset strain (COS ≈1500%), extremely low elastic modulus (E≈1.6 MPa), and unique ability to spontaneously self‐heal atroom temperature within 5 min. Unlike previous works, these unique composite materials also show strain‐independent charge mobility. An in‐depth morphological study based on multi‐model techniques indicate that all composites show blending ratio‐ and stretching‐independent fibril‐like aggregation due to the strong hydrogen bond in elastomer to enable the unique stable charge mobility. This study provides a new direction to develop highly healable and electronically stable semiconductive composite and will enable new applications of stretchable electronics.

Intermediate States Enable Keratin-like α-To-β Transformations in Strain-Responsive Synthetic Polypeptides

Nature’s fibrous proteins, such as α-keratin, achieve remarkable mechanical properties by undergoing strain-induced α-to-β conformational transitions. Inspired by these materials, we report a strategy for designing synthetic polypeptides that undergo similar transformations at elevated temperatures far exceeding keratin’s operational range. By employing helix-confined ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of N -carboxyanhydrides (NCAs) initiated by a short poly(γ-benzyl- L -glutamate) (PBLG) precursor, we synthesized poly( O -benzyl- L -serine) (PBLS) chains that adopt an α-helical structure yet transition into β-sheets upon heating. Compression molding at carefully chosen temperatures drives PBLS segments into an α-β intermediate state, characterized by relaxed intrachain hydrogen bonds and a hexagonal packing arrangement. Under mechanical strain, these intermediate states convert in situ into β-sheets, producing significant strain-hardening well below the spontaneous α-to-β temperature threshold. Further, this approach extends to polypeptides bearing different side chains, such as poly(S-benzyl- L -cysteine), demonstrating robust mechanical reinforcement across a wide temperature window up to ∼ 200 °C. In situ synchrotron X-ray analysis confirms that chain alignment, β-sheet formation, and domain growth occur stepwise during deformation. By harnessing the intermediate states and the supramolecular cooperativity conferred by compression-molded films, our method provides a versatile platform for developing next-generation polypeptide materials with tunable mechanical resilience and responsiveness─surpassing the temperature limitations of natural fibrous proteins and enabling potential applications demanding broad-temperature mechanical adaptability.

Two-bond 13 C– 13 C spin-coupling constants in saccharides: dependencies on exocyclic hydroxyl group conformation

Seven doubly 13 C-labeled isotopomers of methyl β-D-glucopyranoside, methyl β-D-xylopyranoside, methyl β-D-galactopyranoside, methyl β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-glucopyranoside and methyl β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-xylopyranoside were prepared, crystallized, and studied by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and solid-state 13 C NMR spectroscopy to determine experimentally the dependence of 2 J C1,C3 values in aldopyranosyl rings on the C1–C2–O2–H torsion angle, θ 2 , involving the C2 carbon of the C1–C2–C3 coupling pathway. Using X-ray crystal structures to determine θ 2 in crystalline samples and by selecting compounds that exhibit a relatively wide range of θ 2 values in the crystalline state, 2 J C1,C3 values measured in crystalline samples were plotted against θ 2 and the resulting plot compared to that obtained from density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For θ 2 values ranging from ~90° to ~240°, very good agreement was observed between the experimental and theoretical plots, providing strong validation of DFT-calculated spin-coupling dependencies on exocyclic C–O bond conformation involving the central carbon of geminal C–C–C coupling pathways. we report that these findings provide new experimental evidence supporting the use of 2 J CCC values as non-conventional spin-coupling constraints in MA'AT conformational modeling of saccharides in solution, and the use of NMR spin-couplings not involving coupled hydroxyl hydrogens as indirect probes of C–O bond conformation. Solvomorphism was observed in crystalline βGal-(1→4)-βGlcOCH 3 wherein the previously-reported methanol solvate form was found to spontaneously convert to a monohydrate upon air-drying, leading to small but discernible conformational changes in, and a new crystalline form of, this disaccharide.

Data for Photoenzymatic Stereoablative Enantioconvergence of γ-chiral Oximes via Hydrogen Atom Transfer

Producing enantioenriched molecules from racemic mixtures is essential for manufacturing. Traditional methods such as resolution, deracemization and enantioconvergent catalysis primarily involve separating or converting enantiomers without altering their structures, or functionalization of stereocentres at or proximal to functional groups. However, there are challenges in enantioselectively forging C–H bonds that are remote from functional groups via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) with these methods. Here we introduce a strategy for the photoenzymatic stereoablative enantioconvergence of γ-chiral oximes using repurposed flavin-dependent ene-reductases. A photoinduced single-electron reduction of the γ-chiral oxime by an ene-reductase generates an iminyl radical, which then undergoes stereoablative 1,5-HAT at the γ-stereocentre. Subsequent chiral reconstruction through enzymatic HAT and spontaneous imine hydrolysis yields the γ-chiral ketone with high enantioselectivity. This work provides a robust method for remote stereoablative enantioconvergent HAT and broadens the synthetic utility of photobiocatalysis.

Enhancing CO 2 Mineralization Rate and Extent of Iron and Steel Slag via Grinding

Roughly 10% of the CO 2 emissions from iron and steel making are attributable to the direct release of CO 2 from the thermal decomposition of carbonates to produce flux, mainly CaO, used for impurity removal. Notably, these direct emissions remain even if carbon-based steelmaking is replaced by hydrogen-based steelmaking. After removing impurities from the molten metal, this flux becomes the solid waste product called ‘slag’, a primarily Ca-silicate material. The transformation of slag back into carbonates is thermodynamically spontaneous with negative ΔG in the ambient environment, meaning that ~10% of the CO 2 emissions from iron and steel making could be negated if equipment and methods were developed to support CO 2 mineralization. However, the rate of CO 2 mineralization using slag is slowed by several environmental, geometric, and processing factors. We leverage an experimentally verified model of CO 2 mineralization to determine how to efficiently accelerate the process. Increasing the crystallinity of slag, increasing the relative humidity, and reducing the grain size of slag particles provide the greatest increase in CO 2 mineralization rate at the lowest energy penalty. Increasing the concentration of CO 2 and the temperature provide only modest increases in the CO 2 mineralization rate while incurring a substantial energy penalty. For steelmaking slags, CO 2 mineralization represents low-hanging fruit as the current reuse pathways are low value. For ironmaking slag, replacing the production of amorphous slag for the cement industry with the production of crystalline slag for CO 2 mineralization becomes financially preferable when a carbon price/tax exceeds 67.40 USD/t-CO 2 .

Analysis of defects in In 2 O 3 :H synthesized in presence of water vapor and hydrogen gas mixture

Using hybrid functional-based density functional theory calculations, we analyze the structure and kinetics of defects formed in two competing synthesis routes to prepare hydrogen-doped In 2 O 3 films, using a hydrogen and oxygen gas mixture vs synthesis in the presence of water vapor. For both of these synthesis routes, we find that H + is the dominant defect species: when the Fermi level is close to the conduction band, H + has a lower formation energy than other intrinsic or extrinsic defects. Our results also suggest that water molecules spontaneously split into H + (which occupies octahedral voids) and OH – interstitials (which occupies vacant oxygen lattice sites or oxygen vacancies). From the analysis of the binding energies between these different defects, we conclude that these defects do not cluster and are most likely to stay spatially distributed throughout the films. In addition, the sum of formation energies of an oxygen (i.e., O$^{2–}_i$) and a H + interstitial is close to the formation energy of a OH – interstitial, meaning that water molecules are completely split into 2H + and O$^{2–}_i$ at the synthesis conditions. Further, in the presence of H 2 + O 2 gas mixture, oxygen interstitials occupy oxygen vacancies while hydrogen interstitials occupy vacant oxygen lattice sites and form bonds with lattice oxygens. Our analysis of the defect equilibria suggests that the hydrogen content in films synthesized in the presence of water vapor is higher than films synthesized in the presence of a hydrogen gas mixture. At high dopant concentrations, a hydrogen bond network is formed in the system and this leads to large distortions in the lattice.

A fully ro-vibrationally resolved corona model for the molecular hydrogen Fulcher-𝛼 system

A ro-vibrationally resolved corona model for the molecular hydrogen Fulcher-𝛼 transition based on the Yacora solver is introduced. The model couples 1365 ro-vibrational levels of the 𝑋 1 ⁢𝛴$^+_𝑔$, 𝑑 3⁢ 𝛱 𝑢 and 𝑎 3 ⁢𝛴$^+_𝑔$ states via electron impact excitation from the ground state into the 𝑑 3⁢ 𝛱 𝑢 state and subsequent spontaneous emission into the 𝑎 3 ⁢𝛴$+_𝑔$ state. For the process of electron impact excitation a set of 45260 fully ro-vibrationally resolved cross sections calculated with the molecular convergent close-coupling (MCCC) method in the adiabatic-nuclei formulation is applied. The MCCC cross sections are compared with results of a scaling method used in other works, demonstrating the need for dedicated ro-vibrationally resolved cross sections. By post-processing the model output, entire Fulcher spectra can be simulated. These spectra are benchmarked with measurements from an inductively coupled plasma discharge at a pressure between 1.1–10 Pa and a RF power of 700 W. The model results agree very well with the experiment both in relative shape and in absolute value. A non-ro-vibrationally resolved, purely electronically resolved collisional radiative model for molecular hydrogen (including further states and reaction channels) is applied to investigate the validity of the corona approximation for the benchmark plasmas and the relevance of possible process extensions of the corona model. Furthermore, the influence of collisional quenching, autoionization and predissociation is discussed.

The role of water vapor during the synthesis of hydrogen doped In 2 O 3

Hydrogen-doped In 2 O 3 synthesized using magnetron sputtering or atomic layer deposition in the presence of water vapor has high transparency in the near infra-red region and mobility values that are almost three to four times of those in commercially used In 2 O 3 :Sn at a much lower carrier concentration. However, simple questions like what happens when water molecules enter In 2 O 3 or why the dominant charge carrier changes from an oxygen vacancy in In 2 O 3 :Sn to H + in In 2 O 3 are not clear. Using hybrid functional based density functional theory calculations, in this study we show that water molecules spontaneously split into H + and OH – . The H + interstitial bonds with an oxygen in In 2 O 3 , and the OH – interstitial occupies a vacant lattice site or is trapped by an oxygen vacancy. Thus, in agreement with experimental findings, our results suggest that the concentration of oxygen vacancies decreases as the partial pressure of water increases. The charge transition level, ϵ ( – / + ) , of a hydrogen interstitial and the Fermi level at which the formation energies of OH – and H + are equal lie above the conduction band minimum, suggesting that the H + interstitial has a lower formation energy. In addition, water molecules do not exhibit any propensity to form clusters, meaning that H + ions can diffuse and remain spatially separated from each other.

Anion-dependent phase behavior of methylimidazolium-based ionic liquids mixed with water: Correlation between local molecular structure and mesoscale behaviors

The mesoscopic phase behavior of decylmethylimidazolium (C 10 mim) ionic liquids (ILs) bearing three monovalent anions—thiocyanate (SCN − ), nitrate (NO 3 − ), and chloride (Cl − )—mixed with water at relatively high IL contents (50–95 wt%) was investigated. Small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) were employed to follow the evolution of both local and mesoscale structures across this composition range. In the absence of water, C 10 mimSCN and C 10 mimCl behaved as disordered liquids, whereas C 10 mimNO 3 spontaneously formed a hexagonally ordered cylindrical mesophase and displayed a sticky-solid macroscopic appearance. Upon addition of water, C 10 mimSCN remained a viscous liquid and only weakly ordered lamellar domains were observed. This limited ordering is attributed to the lack of hydrogen bonding and weak interaction energy between SCN − anions and C 10 mim + cations. In contrast, the trigonal-planar NO 3 − and point-like Cl − anions promoted the formation of well-defined hexagonal mesophases up to 35–45 wt% water. The formation of hydrogen bonding of the two anions with imidazolium ring protons likely enabled the creation of compact ion clusters that effectively exclude water molecules from the immediate vicinity of the IL aggregates. These findings demonstrate that the interaction energy between ion pairs dictate IL-water interactions and therefore control the transition from disordered liquids to ordered mesophases in IL/water mixtures with high IL contents. In conclusion, the combined SAXS/WAXS analysis reveals a correlation between local intermolecular structure and the emergence of mesoscopic order, providing a systematic framework for tailoring mesoscale structures in alkylimidazolium-based IL/water systems.

Chiral symmetry and scale invariance breaking in spin chains

The effects of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction on finite size one-dimensional (1D) magnetic chains are investigated as a function of their length. The magnetic configuration the system adopts for varying boundary conditions are explored analytically, which leads to the appearance of chiral configurations that play a crucial role. The coercive and exchange bias fields show an unexpected chain length dependence, caused by the boundary conditions and by chiral symmetry breaking, which in turn leads to the breakdown of scale-invariance. Our treatment yields results in agreement with experimental evidence and ongoing research on phthalocyanine iron chains bonded to hydrogen.
