Sixth Annual Thermal and Fluids Analysis Workshop

The Sixth Annual Thermal and Fluids Analysis Workshop was held at the Ohio Aerospace Institute, Brook Park, Ohio cosponsored by NASA Lewis Research Center and the Ohio Aerospace Institute, August 15-19, 1994. The workshop consisted of classes, vendor demonstrations, and paper sessions. The classes and vendor demonstrations provided participants with the information on widely used tools for thermal and fluids analysis. The paper sessions provided a forum for the exchange of information and ideas among thermal and fluids analysis. Paper topics included advances a uses of established thermal and fluids computer codes (such as SINDA and TRASYS) as well as unique modeling techniques and applications.

The Telerobot Testbed: an Architecture for Remote Servicing

The NASA/OAST Telerobot Testbed will reach its next increment in development by the end of FY-89. The testbed will have the capability for: force reflection in teleoperation, shared control, traded control, operator designate and relative update. These five capabilities will be shown in a module release and exchange operation using mockups of Orbital Replacement Units (ORU). This development of the testbed shows examples of the technologies needed for remote servicing, particularly under conditions of delay in transmissions to the servicing site. Here, the following topics are presented: the system architecture of the testbed which incorporates these telerobotic technologies for servicing, the implementation of the five capabilities and the operation of the ORU mockups.

Thermal Vacuum Testing of the Cryostat Heat Removal System for COSI SMEX

The Cryostat Heat Removal System (CHRS) of the Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI) consists of cryocooler, three transport aluminum ammonia Constant Conductance Heat Pipes (CCHP), three radiators with CCHP spreaders and Cryocooler Control Electronics (CCE) attached to a separate radiator. A Thermal Vacuum (TVAC) test was conducted at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center to characterize the integrated COSI CHRS in the flat configuration. This presentation summarizes the measured COSI CHRS performance along with lessons learned.

Using Satellite Surface Temperature Data to Monitor Urban Heat Island

Exposure to heat is a growing concern nationwide. Temperatures can be elevated in cities compared to surrounding rural areas, referred to as an “urban heat island” (UHI) effect, which is intensified during heat waves. The lack of dense networks of air temperature measurements results in few studies on urban heat. Now, a vast amount of high spatial and temporal satellite data on land surface temperature is available. We identified satellite datasets with the longest surface temperature records but different spatial and temporal resolutions: Landsat (1985-current, biweekly at 60 m and 100 m spatial resolution) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data from the Terra and Aqua satellites (2000-current, daily at 1 km spatial resolution). We investigated how satellites with different spatial and temporal resolutions detect UHI effects differently. We hypothesized that 1) a dataset’s spatial resolution impacts the precision of detected UHIs spatially, since high spatial resolution Landsat data better captures spatial variability in temperature, and 2) daily surface temperature data can detect temporal patterns of UHIs and heatwave frequencies. We analyzed Landsat and MODIS satellite data in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore region. We found that Landsat describes higher spatial variability of the UHI effect than MODIS data. However, MODIS data shows more consistent seasonal surface temperature patterns than Landsat when compared to in situ air temperature measurements. MODIS data was also able to consistently measure the frequency of heat waves. This study demonstrates the value of NASA satellite data for urban heat and climate change studies.

Thermal Cycle and Capacitance Testing of Mezzo Industries Phase Change Material Heat Capacitor

A phase change material heat capacitor prototype, designed and built under a NASA Small Business Innovation Research grant by Mezzo Technologies, was tested through coolant thermal cycling within the expected flow rates and temperature range of the Orion spacecraft’s propylene glycol-water mixture coolant system. Testing was performed with the phase change material contained under sealed conditions after a degassing procedure and exposed to atmosphere without prior degassing. The useful heat storage capacitance was measured and compared to Orion spacecraft requirements and theoretical N-Pentadecane storage capacity.
