Field-tuned quantum renormalization of spin dynamics in the honeycomb lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet YbCl 3

The basis for our understanding of quantum magnetism has been the study of elegantly simple model systems. However, even for the antiferromagnetic honeycomb lattice with isotropic spin interactions–one of the simplest model systems–a detailed understanding of quantum effects is still lacking. Here, using inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the honeycomb lattice material YbCl 3 , we elucidate how quantum effects renormalize the single-magnon and multimagnon excitations and how this renormalization can be tuned and ultimately driven to the classical limit by applying a magnetic field. Additionally, our work reveals that the quantum effects tuned by the magnetic field not only renormalize the magnetic excitations but also induce a distinctive sharp feature inside the multimagnon continuum. From a more general perspective, this result demonstrates that structures within magnetic continua can occur over a wide experimental parameter space and can be used as a reliable means of identifying quantum phenomena.

Classical dynamics of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin ladder

We employ a classical limit grounded in SU(4) coherent states to investigate the temperature-dependent dynamical spin structure factor of the S = 1/2 ladder consisting of weakly coupled dimers. By comparing the outcomes of this classical approximation with density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization calculations in finite size ladders, we demonstrate that the classical dynamics offers an accurate approximation across the entire temperature range when the interdimer coupling is weak and a good approximation in the high temperature regime even when the interdimer coupling is strong. This agreement is achieved after appropriately rescaling the temperature axis and renormalizing expectation values to satisfy a quantum sum rule. Here, we anticipate the method will be particularly effective when applied to 2D and 3D lattices composed of weakly-coupled dimers, situations that remain challenging for alternative numerical methods.

Discovering Classical Spin Liquids by Topological Search of High Symmetry Nets

Spin liquids are a paradigmatic example of a nontrivial state of matter. The search for new spin liquids is a key interdisciplinary challenge. Geometrical frustration-where the geometry of the net that the spins occupy precludes the generation of a simple ordered state-is a particularly fruitful way to generate these intrinsically disordered states. Prior focus has been on a handful of high symmetry nets. There are, however, many three-dimensional nets, each of which has the potential to form unique states. In this paper, we investigate the high symmetry nets-those which are both vertex- and edge-transitive-for the simplest possible interaction sets: nearest-neighbor couplings of antiferromagnetic Heisenberg and Ising spins. While the well-known crs (pyrochlore) net is the only nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet which does not order, we identify two new frustrated nets (lcx and thp) possessing finite temperature Heisenberg spin-liquid states with strongly suppressed magnetic ordering and noncollinear ground states. With Ising spins, we identify three new classical spin liquids that do not order down to T/J = 0.01. We highlight materials that contain these high symmetry nets, and which could, if substituted with appropriate magnetic ions, potentially host these unusual states. Our systematic survey will guide searches for novel magnetic phases.

Magnetic structure and exchange interactions in the Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7

In this report the Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 is one of a series of gadolinium pyrochlore compounds with a variety of B-site cations. Despite the expected simplicity of a spin-only Gd 3+ Heisenberg interaction model, the gadolinium pyrochlore series exhibits various complex magnetic ground states at low temperature. Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 displays the highest temperature magnetic order of the series with $T_N$=1.6 K, which has been attributed to enhanced superexchange pathways facilitated by empty $5d$ $e_g$ Pt orbitals. In this study, we use various neutron scattering techniques on an isotopically enriched polycrystalline 160 Gd 2 Pt 2 O 7 sample to examine the magnetic structure and spin-wave excitation spectrum below $T_N$ in order to extract the dominant exchange interactions. We find that the ground-state magnetic structure is the Palmer-Chalker state previously seen in Gd 2 Sn 2 O 7 with an associated gapped excitation spectrum consistent with enhanced exchange interactions between further near-neighbor Gd 3+ ions. We confirm this exchange model with analysis of the magnetic diffuse scattering in the paramagnetic regime using polarized neutrons.

Liquid-like spin dynamics in a hybrid Heisenberg-Ising antiferromagnet

Two-dimensional (2D) materials and their heterostructures enable unconventional electronic properties and functionalities not accessible in their bulk counterparts. This approach is now being extended to magnetic materials to engineer their spin structures and magnetic fields produced by them. However, spin dynamics of 2D magnetic heterostructures remain largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that heterointerfacing Heisenberg square-lattice antiferromagnet (AF) Sr 2 IrO 4 with its bilayer variant Ising AF Sr 3 Ir 2 O 7 in a superlattice leads to liquid-like spin dynamics in the former, characterized by slow recovery of the AF order after its transient suppression by an optical pump, and complete absence of spin waves except in an immediate vicinity of the ordering wavevector. Instead, the spin excitation spectra are dominated by isotropic continua, which in previous works have been interpreted as fractional spin excitations, or spinons, that extends to unprecedentedly low energies. Thus, our results provide a pathway to frustrated magnetism in square lattices by heterointerfacing two distinct types of AFs.

Gapless spinons and a field-induced soliton gap in the hyperhoneycomb Cu oxalate framework compound [(C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH] 2 Cu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3

Here, we report a detailed study of the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility of single crystals of a spin-liquid candidate: the hyperhoneycomb Cu oxalate framework compound [(C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH] 2 Cu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3 . The specific heat shows no anomaly associated with a magnetic transition at low temperatures down to T ~ 180 mK in zero magnetic field. We observe a large linear-in-T contribution to the specific heat γT, γ = 98 (1) mJ / mol K 2 , at low temperatures, indicative of the presence of fermionic excitations despite the Mott insulating state. The low-T specific heat is strongly suppressed by applied magnetic fields H, which induce an energy gap, Δ(H), in the spin-excitation spectrum. We use the four-component relativistic density-functional theory (DFT) to calculate the magnetic interactions, including the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya antisymmetric exchange, which causes an effective staggered field acting on one copper sublattice. The magnitude and field dependence of the field-induced gap, Δ (H) ∝ H 2/3 , are accurately predicted by the soliton mass calculated from the sine-Gordon model of weakly coupled antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with all parameters determined by our DFT calculations. Thus our experiment and calculations are entirely consistent with a model of [(C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH] 2 Cu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3 in which anisotropic magnetic exchange interactions due to Jahn-Teller distortion cause one copper sublattice to dimerize, leaving a second sublattice of weakly coupled antiferromagnetic chains. We also show that this model quantitatively accounts for the measured temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility. Thus [(C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH] 2 Cu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3 is a canonical example of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet and not a resonating-valence-bond quantum spin liquid, as previously proposed.

Nonequilibrium magnons studied by inelastic neutron scattering

In this work, we explore time-resolved dynamics of non-equilibrium magnons in Rb2MnF4, a model two-dimensional square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet using a novel laser-neutron pump-probe technique. This technique uses a nanosecond pulsed laser to periodically excite magnons to out-of-equilibrium states and then probe the resulting dynamics using INS.

Formation of a simple cubic antiferromagnet through charge ordering in a double Dirac material

Following the topological classification of electronic phases, interest has grown in materials with unique electronic or magnetic properties driven by topology and interactions. Here, in this study, we report that the topologically nontrivial mixed valent intermetalllic EuPd 3 S 4 undergoes long-range charge ordering at 𝑇 𝐶⁢𝑂 = 340 K wherein 𝐽 = 7/2 Eu 2+ and Van Vleck 𝐽 = 0 Eu 3+ ions on a body-centered-cubic lattice separate into two interpenetrating simple cubic sublattices. The reduced symmetry transmutes 8-fold double Dirac states into 4-fold Dirac states and leads to a simple cubic Heisenberg antiferromagnet with G-type antiferromagnetic order for 𝑇 <⁢ 𝑇 𝑁 = 2.85⁢(6) K. While time reversal symmetry is broken, its combination with nearest neighbor lattice translation can form a nonsymmorphic symmetry preserving the 4-fold Dirac point. The application of a magnetic field yields a spin flop transition at the lowest temperatures but, as a consequence of the extreme isotropy of Eu, that phase transition turns into a cross-over at higher temperatures. Our work demonstrates how charge order modifies topology in EuPd 3 S 4 and exposes an archetypal simple cubic Heisenberg antiferromagnet.

Thermodynamic Evidence of Fermionic Behavior in the Vicinity of One-Ninth Plateau in a Kagome Antiferromagnet

The spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnets are believed to host exotic quantum entangled states. Recently, the reports of 1/9 magnetization plateau and magnetic oscillations in a kagome antiferromagnet YCu 3 ⁢(OH) 6 ⁢Br 2 ⁢[Br 𝑥 ⁢(OH) 1−𝑥 ] (YCOB) have made this material a promising candidate for experimentally realizing quantum spin liquid states. Here, we present measurements of the specific heat 𝐶 𝑝 in YCOB in high magnetic fields (up to 41.5 T) down to 0.46 K, and the 1/9 plateau feature has been confirmed. Moreover, the temperature dependence of 𝐶 𝑝 /𝑇 in the vicinity of 1/9 plateau region can be fitted by a linear in 𝑇 term which indicates the presence of a Dirac spectrum, together with a constant term, which indicates a finite density of states contributed by other spinon Fermi surfaces. Surprisingly, the constant term is highly anisotropic in the direction of the magnetic field. Additionally, we observe a double-peak feature near 30 T above the 1/9 plateau which is another hallmark of fermionic excitations in the specific heat. This combination of gapless behavior and the double-peak structure strongly suggests that the 1/9 plateau in YCOB is nontrivial and hosts fermionic quasiparticles.

Discrete Open-Shell Tris(bipyridinium radical cationic) Inclusion Complexes in the Solid State

In the solid state the properties of organic radicals depend heavily on radical-radical interactions that are influenced by the superstructure of the crystalline phase. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a substituted tetracationic cyclophane, cyclobis(paraquat-p-1,4- dimethoxyphenylene), and outline how its bisradical dicationic redox state associates with the methyl viologen radical cation (MV •+ ) to give a trisradical tricationic inclusion complex. The (super)structures of the reduced cyclophane and this 1:1 complex in the solid-state deviate from the analogous (super)structures observed for the reduced state of cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) and that of its trisradical tricationic complex. Titration experiments with a range of guests reveal that the methoxy substituents on the para-xylenyl do not influence significantly of the binding affinity of the cyclophane for small neutral guests, whereas the affinity decreases by an order of magnitude for larger radical cationic guests such as MV •+ . X-Ray diffraction reveals that the solid- state structures of the tricationic trisradical complexes to be a discrete entity with weak intermolecular orbital overlap between the neighboring complexes. Transient nutation EPR experiment and DFT calculations confirm that the complex has a doublet spin configuration in the ground state as a result of the strong orbital overlap within the complex, while the quartet-state spin configuration is higher in energy and so is inaccessible at ambient temperature. The superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurement reveals that trisradical tricationic complexes interact antiferromagnetically (J/k = - 2.33 K) and form a 1D Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain along the a-axis in the crystal. Furthermore, these results offer new insights into the design and synthesis of organic magnetic materials based on host-guest inclusion complexes.

Molecular-field-theory fits to magnetic susceptibilities of antiferromagnetic GdCu 2 Si 2 , CuO, LiCrO 2 , and α-CaCr 2 O 4 single crystals below their Néel temperatures

A recently-developed molecular field theory (MFT) has been used to fit single-crystal magnetic susceptibility χ versus temperature T data below the respective antiferromagnetic ordering temperature T N for a variety of collinear and coplanar noncollinear Heisenberg antiferromagnets. The spins in the system are assumed to interact by Heisenberg exchange and to be identical and crystallographically equivalent. The fitting parameters for χ(T ) of collinear antiferromagnets are measurable quantities: the Weiss temperature θ p in the Curie-Weiss law, TN, χ(T N ), and the spin S. For coplanar noncollinear helix and cycloid structures, an additional fitting parameter is the turn angle between layers of ferromagnetically-aligned spins. Here MFT fits to anisotropic χ(T) data from the literature for single crystals of the collinear antiferromagnets GdCu 2 Si 2 and CuO and the noncollinear antiferromagnets LiCrO 2 with a 120° cycloidal structure and α-CaCr 2 O 4 with a 120° helical structure below their respective N´eel temperatures are presented. The MFT fit to the anisotropic χ(T ≤ T N ) data for CuO is poor, whereas the fits to the data for GdCu 2 Si 2 , LiCrO 2 , and α-CaCr 2 O 4 are quite good. The poor fit for CuO is attributed to the influence of strong quantum fluctuations associated with the small Cu spin and the quasi-one-dimensional magnetism that are not taken into account by the MFT. The magnetic contribution to the zero-field heat capacity of the collinear antiferromagnet GdNiGe 3 at T ≤ T N is also fitted by the MFT.
