Helical magnetic order and Fermi surface nesting in noncentrosymmetric ScFeGe

Here, an investigation of the structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and charge transport properties of noncentrosymmetric hexagonal ScFeGe reveals it to be an anisotropic metal with a transition to a weak itinerant incommensurate helimagnetic state below T N =36 K. Neutron diffraction measurements discovered a temperature and field independent helical wave vector k = (0 0 0.193) with magnetic moments of 0.53 μ B per Fe confined to the ab-plane. Density functional theory calculations are consistent with these measurements and find several bands that cross the Fermi level along the c-axis with a nearly degenerate set of flat bands just above the Fermi energy. The anisotropy found in the electrical transport is reflected in the calculated Fermi surface, which consists of several warped flat sheets along the c-axis with two regions of significant nesting, one of which has a wave vector that closely matches that found in the neutron diffraction. The electronic structure calculations, along with a strong anomaly in the c-axis conductivity at TN, signal a Fermi surface driven magnetic transition, similar to that found in spin density wave materials. Magnetic fields applied in the ab-plane result in a metamagnetic transition with a threshold field of ≈ 6.7 T along with a sharp, strongly temperature dependent discontinuity and a change in sign of the magnetoresistance for in-plane currents. Thus, ScFeGe is an ideal system to investigate the effect of in-plane magnetic fields on a helimagnet with a c-axis propagation vector, where the relative strength of the magnetic interactions and anisotropies determine the topology and magnetic structure.

The Magneto-Transport Properties of Cr 1/3 TaS 2 with Chiral Magnetic Solitons

Cr 1/3 TaS 2 —a candidate of chiral magnet—has been reported as a trivial ferromagnetic material. In contrast, the Cr 1/3 TaS 2 single crystals exhibit a chiral helimagnetic (CHM) transition near 140 K. The magnetic moment versus magnetic field curves reveal a CHM—chiral soliton lattice (CSL)—forced ferromagnetic (FFM) transition in the magnetic ordered state. The conducting electrons interact with the CHM and CSL orders, giving rise to the nontrivial magnetoresistance (MR) in the Cr 1/3 TaS 2 single crystals. The normalized magnetic moment and normalized MR fit well with the analytical functions for chiral soliton density. The magnetic phase diagrams constructed from the magnetic moment data and MR data suggest a possible tri-critical point. Compared with the isostructural Cr 1/3 NbS 2 , the CHM transition temperature of Cr 1/3 TaS 2 is 13 K higher, the CSL—FFM transition field is about 10 times larger, and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction strength is 3 times bigger. The latter two likely originate from the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of Cr 1/3 TaS 2 . This work clarifies that high-quality Cr 1/3 TaS 2 single crystals are chiral magnets and Cr 1/3 (Nb,Ta)S 2 could serve as an intriguing platform for the flexible engineering of chiral magnetic solitons with tunable SOC.

In-situ L-TEM observations of dynamics of nanometric skyrmions and antiskyrmions

Nanometer-scale magnetic skyrmions and antiskyrmions exhibit unique dynamical behaviors in response to external stimuli, which are critical for their applications in low-power-consumption spintronic devices. This review discusses recent advancements in in-situ Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (L-TEM) observations of skyrmion and antiskyrmion dynamics, and demonstrates the manipulation and evolution of these textures in various magnetic materials under electric, magnetic, and thermal stimuli. Specifically, the motion tracking of single skyrmions and their clusters, and the deformation and transformation of skyrmions has been demonstrated in chiral helimagnets FeGe, Co 9 Zn 9 Mn 2 , and Co 10 Zn 10 with precise application of electric currents. Skyrmions can undergo dynamic transitions in current-driven skyrmion motions, from pinned states to linear flows, and even exhibit deformation into elliptical shapes, underscoring their topological robustness and dynamic flexibility. In addition, the manipulation of single antiskyrmions and antiskyrmion-lattice phases in (Fe 0.63 Ni 0.3 Pd 0.07 ) 3 P with S 4 symmetry is discussed, highlighting their high mobility and unique sliding capabilities along stripe domains at room temperature, facilitated by nanosecond pulsed electric currents. Finally, the temperature gradient-driven motion and topological transformation of elliptical skyrmions and antiskyrmions in this same material are investigated. In conclusion, the comprehensive insights gained from the L-TEM imaging technique are pivotal in advancing the design and functionality of next-generation skyrmion/antiskyrmion-based spintronic devices.

Chirality reversal of magnetic solitons in chiral Cr 1/3 TaS 2

Ferromagnetism in two-dimensional (2D) materials provides an ideal platform to study emergent electromagnetic phenomena in low dimensions for future spintronics. In magnetic-element intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides, topologically nontrivial spin textures, such as chiral helimagnetic spin states and chiral soliton lattices, are realized due to the chiral lattice distortions induced by intercalated magnetic ions. Consequently, the magnetic chirality is predictably determined by the sign of antisymmetric exchange interaction (or Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction, DMI) vector that is coupled to the underlying crystal chirality. Here, using cryogenic Lorentz phase microscopy, we directly observed the chirality reversal behavior of the chiral soliton lattices in Cr 1/3 TaS 2 across the structural defects. We show that a partial 1 T stacking in 2H-TaS 2 locally reduces DMI, leading to magnetic chirality reversal with direct atomic resolution imaging. Furthermore, our experimental results show that manipulation of stacking sequence provides a viable way to control the chirality of topologically nontrivial soliton lattices in 2D magnets.

Topological spin/structure couplings in layered chiral magnet Cr 1/3 TaS 2 : The discovery of spiral magnetic superstructure

Significance Magnets in which chirality of crystal lattice gives rise to noncollinear spin orders are ideal playgrounds for studies of novel physical phenomena originating from the nontrivial topology of magnetic textures. Most studies have been focused on homochiral materials, while topological magnetic states of heterochiral magnets have rarely been explored. Here, we report a layered chiral helimagnet with highly tunable topological heterochiral states. Tuning the chiral domain density, we have observed a topological magnetic texture that has the form of a spiral unfolding in the radial direction. In weak in-plane fields, this spiral magnetic superstructure transforms into a nonspiral array of concentric rings. Our results open a horizon for studies of tunable topological magnetic textures.

Spin Seebeck effect in $\mathrm{Cu_2 OSeO_3}$: Test of bulk magnon spin current theory

In this work, we report measurements of the low-temperature (T ≤ 15K) longitudinal spin Seebeck coefficient (S LSSE ) in bulk single crystals of the helimagnetic insulator Cu 2 OSeO 3 with Pt contacts. Simultaneous measurement of both S LSSE and the magnon thermal conductivity (κ m ) demonstrates their correlation and allows for quantitative and favorable comparison to bulk magnon spin current theory.

Low-energy magnons in the chiral ferrimagnet Cu 2 OSeO 3 : A coarse-grained approach

We report a comprehensive neutron scattering study of low energy magnetic excitations in the breathing pyrochlore helimagnetic Cu2OSeO3. Fully documenting the four lowest energy magnetic modes that leave the ferrimagnetic configuration of the “strong tetrahedra” intact (| ℏ ω| < 13 meV), we find gapless quadratic dispersion at the Γ point for energies above 0.2 meV, two doublets separated by 1.6(2) meV at the R point, and a bounded continuum at the X point. Our constrained rigid spin cluster model relates these features to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions and the incommensurate helical ground state. Combining conventional spin wave theory with a spin cluster form factor accurately reproduces the measured equal time structure factor through multiple Brillouin zones. An effective spin Hamiltonian describing complex anisotropic intercluster interactions is obtained.

Chiral Magnetism and High-Temperature Skyrmions in B20-Ordered Co-Si

Magnets with chiral crystal structures and helical spin structures have recently attracted much attention as potential spin-electronics materials, but their relatively low magnetic-ordering temperatures are a disadvantage. While cobalt has long been recognized as an element that promotes high-temperature magnetic ordering, most Co-rich alloys are achiral and exhibit collinear rather than helimagnetic order. Crystallographically, the B20-ordered compound CoSi is an exception due to its chiral structure, but it does not exhibit any kind of magnetic order. Here, we use nonequilibrium processing to produce B20-ordered Co 1+ x Si 1₋ x with a maximum Co solubility of x = 0.043. Above a critical excess-Co content x c = 0.028 ), the alloys are magnetically ordered, and for x = 0.043, a critical temperature $T_c$ = 328 K is obtained, the highest among all B20-type magnets. The crystal structure of the alloy supports spin spirals caused by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and from magnetic measurements we estimate that the spirals have a periodicity of about 17 nm. In this work, our density-functional calculations explain the combination of high magnetic-ordering temperature and short periodicity in terms of a quantum phase transition where excess-cobalt spins are coupled through the host matrix.

Consequences and Control of Multiscale Order/Disorder in Chiral Magnetic Textures

Transition metal intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are promising platforms for next-generation spintronic devices based on their wide range of electronic and magnetic phases, which can be tuned by varying the host lattice or intercalant’s identity, stoichiometry, or spatial order. Some of these compounds host a chiral magnetic phase in which the helical winding of magnetic moments propagates along a high-symmetry crystalline axis. Previous studies have demonstrated that variation in intercalant concentrations can have a dramatic effect on the formation of chiral domains and ensemble magnetic properties. However, a systematic and comprehensive study of how atomic-scale order and disorder impact these chiral magnetic textures is so far lacking. Here, we leverage a combination of imaging modes in the (scanning) transmission electron microscope (S/TEM) to directly probe (dis)order across multiple length scales and show how subtle changes in the atomic lattice can tune the mesoscale spin textures and bulk magnetic response in Cr 1/3 NbS 2 , with direct implications for the fundamental understanding and technological implementation of such compounds.

Possible quadrupole-order-driven commensurate-incommensurate phase transition in B20 CoGe

For this study, the B20-type cobalt germanide CoGe was investigated by measuring the specific heat, resistivity, and 59 Co nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). We observed a phase transition at T Q = 13.7 K, evidenced by a very narrow peak of the specific heat and sharp changes of the nuclear spin-spin (T 2 –1 ) and spin-lattice ( T 1 – 1 ) relaxation rates. The fact that the entropy release is extremely small and the Knight shift is almost independent of temperature down to low temperatures as anticipated in a paramagnetic metal indicates that the T Q transition is of nonmagnetic origin. In addition, we detected a crossover scale T 0 ~ 30 K below which the resistivity and the NMR linewidth increase, and T 1 –1 is progressively distributed in space, that is, a static and dynamical spatial inhomogeneity develops. While the order parameter for the T Q transition remains an open question, a group-theoretical analysis suggests that the finite electric quadrupole density arising from the low local site symmetry at cobalt sites could drive the crystal symmetry lowering from the P2 1 3 symmetry that is commensurate to the R3 symmetry with an incommensurate wave vector, which fairly well accounts for the T Q transition. The quadrupole-order-driven commensurate-incommensurate phase transition may be another remarkable phenomenon arising from the structural chirality inherent in the noncentrosymmetric B20 family.

Europium c -axis ferromagnetism in Eu ( Co 1 - x Ni x ) 2 - y As 2 : A single-crystal neutron diffraction study

Here we report neutron diffraction results for the body-centered-tetragonal series Eu⁢(Co 1-x ⁢Ni x ) 2-y As 2 , x=0.10, 0.20, 0.42, and 0.82, y≤0.10, that detail changes to the magnetic ordering with nominal hole doping. We report the antiferromagnetic (AFM) propagation vectors, magnetic transition temperatures, and the ordered magnetic moments. We find a nonmonotonic change of the AFM propagation vector with x, with a minimum occurring at the tetragonal to collapsed-tetragonal phase crossover. For x=0.10 and 0.82 we find c-axis helix ordering of the Eu magnetic moments (spins) similar to x=0 and 1, with the spins oriented within the ab-plane. For x=0.20 and 0.42 we find higher-temperature c-axis ferromagnetic (FM) order and lower-temperature c-axis cone order. Using the extinction conditions for the space group, we discovered that the Eu spins are ordered in the higher-temperature c-axis FM phase for intermediate values of x, contrary to a previous report suggesting only Co/Ni spin ordering. Although we cannot directly confirm that the Co/Ni spins are also ordered, we suggest that c-axis itinerant-FM ordering of the Co/Ni spins could provide a molecular field that drives FM ordering of the Eu spins, which in turn provides the anisotropy for the lower-temperature c-axis cone order.

Electron-phonon coupling in M⁢n 1−𝑥 ⁢F⁡e 𝑥⁢ Si

We present a study of the lattice dynamical properties of M⁢n 1−𝑥⁢ F⁡e 𝑥 ⁢Si with 0≤𝑥≤0.22. Employing time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy and inelastic x-ray scattering, we investigate the doping dependence of phonon energies, 𝐸 ph , and linewidths, Γ ph . We find anomalous softening and broadening of a phonon mode propagating along the direction. Ab initio lattice dynamical calculations link this softening to an enhanced electron-phonon coupling due to the doping-dependent changes of the Fermi surface. In conclusion, we discuss an interplay of increased electron-phonon coupling and reduced ordered magnetic moments in M⁢n 1−𝑥⁢ F⁡e 𝑥 ⁢Si.
