Perovskite Oxide–Halide Solid Solutions: A Platform for Electrocatalysts

The successful integration or hybridization of perovskite oxides with their halide cousins would enable the formation of both multi-anionic and multi-cationic solid solutions with unique metal-ion sites and synergistic properties that could potentially surpass the performance of classic perovskites. However, such solid solutions had not been produced previously owing to their distinct formation energies and different synthesis conditions. Solid solutions combining perovskite oxides with fluorides were produced in this study by mechanochemical synthesis. The obtained perovskite oxide–halide solid solutions had highly mixed elements and valences, uniform element distributions, and single-phase crystalline structures. In this work, the solid solution with an optimized combination of oxides and fluorides exhibited enhanced catalytic performance in the oxygen evolution reaction.

High-throughput oxygen chemical potential engineering of perovskite oxides for chemical looping applications

Chemical looping (CL) represents a versatile, emerging strategy for sustainable chemical and energy conversion. Designing metal oxide oxygen carriers with suitable redox properties remains one of the most critical challenges to CL due to the considerably different thermodynamic property requirements for different applications. Here, taking SrFeO 3–δ as a base-structure, this study seeks to rationally substitute its A- and/or B-site cations to tailor the equilibrium oxygen partial pressure over 20 orders of magnitude. 2401 Sr x A 1–x Fe y B 1–y O 3–δ perovskite-phase structures were investigated using high-throughput density functional theory (DFT) and 227, 273 high-entropy perovskites were screened via machine learning (ML). This significantly expands the materials design space. While most of the compositions predicted are new and nonobvious, 19 previously reported oxygen carriers, with excellent redox properties, were correctly identified by the algorithm. Moreover, we experimentally demonstrated 15 new oxygen carriers with superior redox performance. These results support the effectiveness of the high-throughput approaches for accelerated materials discovery.

Pressure-induced suppression of Jahn–Teller distortions and enhanced electronic properties in high-entropy oxide (Mg 0.2 Ni 0.2 Co 0.2 Zn 0.2 Cu 0.2 )O

Jahn–Teller distortions are often observed in Cu II -containing complex oxides resulting in remarkable changes of physical properties. Tuning the Jahn–Teller distortions with pressure has attracted considerable interest but is less studied in Cu II -containing high-entropy oxides (HEOs). We found that pressure can suppress the structural distortions originating from the Jahn–Teller effect of CuO 6 octahedra in the rock salt-type (Mg 0.2 Ni 0.2 Co 0.2 Zn 0.2 Cu 0.2 )O HEO and significantly modify its electronic properties. Synchrotron x-ray diffraction shows that the structural distortions arising from the Jahn–Teller effect of CuO 6 octahedra are progressively suppressed, and the distorted structure evolves into a nearly ideal form under compression. Alternating current impedance and ultraviolet-visible absorption measurements reveal a dramatic resistance drop by more than three orders of magnitude and an obvious bandgap decrease in ~0.1 eV, respectively, accompanied by the pressure-induced suppression of structural distortions. Our study presents a promising route for tuning the structural distortions and the electronic structures of Cu II -containing HEOs for optimizing materials functionalities.

Local cation ordering in compositionally complex Ruddlesden–Popper n = 1 oxides

The Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) layered perovskite structure is of great interest due to its inherent tunability, and the emergence and growth of the compositionally complex oxide (CCO) concept endows the RP family with further possibilities. Here, a comprehensive assessment of thermodynamic stabilization, local order/disorder, and lattice distortion was performed in the first two reported examples of lanthanum-deficient La n+1 B n O 3n+1 (n = 1, B = Mg, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) obtained via various processing conditions. Chemical short-range order (CSRO) at the B-site and the controllable excess interstitial oxygen (δ) in RP-CCOs are uncovered by neutron pair distribution function analysis. Reverse Monte Carlo analysis of the data, Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations, and extended x-ray absorption fine structure analysis implies a modest degree of magnetic element segregation on the local scale. Further, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations results obtained from special quasirandom structure disagree with experimentally observed CSRO but confirm Jahn–Teller distortion of CuO 6 octahedra. These findings highlight potential opportunities to control local order/disorder and excess interstitial oxygen in layered RP-CCOs and demonstrate a high degree of freedom for tailoring application-specific properties. They also suggest a need for expansion of theoretical and data modeling approaches in order to meet the innate challenges of CCO and related high-entropy phases.
