Magnetic excitations from the hexagonal spin clusters in the 𝑆 = $\frac{1}{2}$ distorted honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet Cu 2 ⁢(pymca)⁢ 3 ⁢(ClO 4 )

Cu 2 ⁢(pymca) ⁢3 (ClO 4 ) (pymca: pyrimidine-2-carboxylate) consists of a slightly distorted honeycomb lattice of Cu 2+ spins, which shows no long-range magnetic order down to 0.6 K. A magnetization study revealed 1/3 and 2/3 plateau phases [A. Okutani et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 88, 013703 (2019)], which is not expected for regular honeycomb antiferromagnets. Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed using a powder sample to investigate the exchange interactions of this material. The spin excitations from the singlet ground state to the first three triplet states, predicted from the antiferromagnetic hexagonal spin cluster interacting with 3.9 meV, were observed. Using the exact diagonalization methods, the intercluster coupling was estimated from the excitation peak width to be about 20% of the intracluster interaction, which is consistent with the previously reported value. Finally, our exchange path model explains the anisotropic exchange interactions in the distorted honeycomb plane.

Superconductivity in the lightly doped Hubbard model on the cylindrical honeycomb lattice

Here, we have performed large-scale density-matrix renormalization group studies of the lightly doped Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice on long three- and four-leg cylinders. We find that the ground state of the system upon lightly doping is consistent with that of a superconducting state with coexisting quasi-long-range superconducting and charge density wave orders. Both the superconducting and charge density wave correlations decay as a power law at long distances with corresponding exponents 𝐾 𝑠⁢𝑐 < 2 and 𝐾 𝑐 < 2. On the contrary, the spin-spin and single-particle correlations decay exponentially, although with relatively long correlation lengths.

Easy-plane anisotropic-exchange magnets on a honeycomb lattice: Quantum effects and dealing with them

We provide analytical and numerical insights into the phase diagram and other properties of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice in the easy-plane limit, in which interactions are only between spin components that belong to the plane of magnetic ions. This parameter subspace allows for a much-needed systematic quantitative investigation of spin excitations in the ordered phases and of their generic features. Specifically, we demonstrate that in this limit one can consistently take into account magnon interactions in both zero-field zigzag and field-polarized phases. For the nominally polarized phase, we propose a regularization of the unphysical divergences that occur at the critical field and are plaguing the 1/S approximation in this class of models. For the explored parameter subspace, all symmetry-allowed terms of the standard parametrization of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model, such as K, J, and Γ, are significant, making the offered consideration relevant to a much wider parameter space. Furthermore, the dynamical structure factor near the paramagnetic critical point illustrates this relevance by showing features that are reminiscent of the ones observed in α–RuCl 3 , underscoring that they are not unique and should be common to a wide range of parameters of the model and, by extension, to other materials.

Self-consistently renormalized spin-wave theory of layered ferromagnets on the honeycomb lattice

We develop a self-consistently renormalized spin-wave theory, within a mean-field approximation, for the two-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet with perpendicular easy-axis anisotropy on the honeycomb lattice, as well as its few-layer and bulk extensions. In this method, the magnetization dependence on temperature is found as the solution of the self-consistency equation. Furthermore, we account for the physical difference of surface and bulk layers by treating the layers as separate sublattices. Thus the method can be readily generalized to study various magnetic phenomena in a broad range of systems, including those comprising magnetically inequivalent sublattices. Using our theory, we calculate the temperature-dependent magnetization for two chromium-based layered van der Waals insulating magnets, Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 and CrI 3 , employing various sets of Heisenberg exchange and single-ion anisotropy values reported for these materials in the existing literature. As expected, we observe a strong dimensionality effect where the ordering temperature is reduced and its sensitivity on the anisotropy is enhanced with the decrease of dimensionality.

Kekulé valence bond order in the honeycomb lattice optical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and its relevance to graphene

We perform sign-problem-free determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the optical Su- Schrieffer-Heeger model on a half-filled honeycomb lattice. In particular, we investigate the model’s semi-metal (SM) to Kekulé Valence Bond Solid (KVBS) phase transition at zero and finite temper- atures as a function of phonon energy and interaction strength. Using hybrid Monte Carlo sampling methods we can simulate the model near the adiabatic regime, allowing us to access regions of parameter space relevant to graphene. Our simulations suggest that the SM-KVBS transition is weakly first-order at all temperatures, with graphene situated close to the phase boundary in the SM region of the phase diagram. Furthermore, our results highlight the important role bond-stretching phonon modes play in the formation of KVBS order in strained graphene-derived systems.

Magnetic charge and geometry confluence for ultra-low forward voltage diode in artificial honeycomb lattice

We report spin diode is important prerequisite to practical manifestation of spin electronics. Yet, a functioning magnetic diode at room temperature is still illusive. Here, we reveal diode-type phenomena due to magnetic charge mediated conduction in artificial honeycomb geometry, made of concave shape single domain permalloy element. We find that honeycomb lattice defies symmetry by populating vertices with low and high multiplicity magnetic charges, causing asymmetric magnetization, in applied current of opposite polarity. High multiplicity units create highly resistive network, thereby inhibiting magnetic charge dynamics propelled electrical conduction. However, practical realization of this effect requires modest demagnetization factor in constituting element. Concave structure fulfills the condition. Subsequently, magnetic diode behavior emerges across broad thermal range of T = 40 K–300 K. The finding is a departure from the prevailing notion of spin-charge interaction as the sole guiding principle behind spintronics. Consequently, a new vista, mediated by magnetic charge interaction, is envisaged for spintronic research.

Codimension-two spiral spin liquid in the effective honeycomb-lattice compound Cs 3 ⁢Fe 2 ⁢Cl 9

A codimension-two spiral spin liquid is a correlated paramagnetic state with one-dimensional ground state degeneracy hosted within a three-dimensional lattice. Here, in this work, via neutron scattering experiments and numerical simulations, we establish the existence of a codimension-two spiral spin liquid in the effective honeycomb-lattice compound Cs 3 ⁢Fe 2⁢ Cl 9 , which demonstrates an alternate path to spiral spin liquids by overcoming the long-standing impediment of weak further-neighbor interactions. In the long-range ordered regime, competing spiral and spin density wave orders emerge as a function of applied magnetic field, among which a possible order-by-disorder transition is identified.

Spin-1 Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice

We study the Kitaev-Heisenberg model with spin-1 local degree of freedom on a honeycomb lattice numerically by the infinite density matrix renormalization group method on a cylinder geometry. By tuning the relative value of the Kitaev and Heisenberg exchange couplings, we obtain the phase diagram with two spin liquid phases and four symmetry-broken phases. Here, we identify that the spin liquid phases are gapless by calculating the central charge at the pure Kitaev points without the Heisenberg interactions. Comparing to its spin-1/2 counterpart, the position and number of gapless modes of the spin-1 case are quite different. Due to the approximate Z 2 local conservations, the expectation value of the Wilson loop operator measuring the flux of each plaquette stays near to 1, and the static spin-spin correlations remain short range in the entire spin liquid phases.

Weakly coupled alternating S = 1 2 chains in the distorted honeycomb lattice compound Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6

Spin- 1 2 chains with alternating antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) couplings exhibit quantum entanglement as the integer-spin Haldane chains and might be similarly utilized for quantum computations. Such alternating AF-FM chains have been proposed to be realized in the distorted honeycomb lattice compound Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 , but to confirm this picture a comprehensive understanding of the exchange interactions including terms outside of the idealized model is required. Here, we employ neutron scattering to study the spin dynamics in Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 and accurately determine the coupling strengths through the random phase approximation and density functional theory approaches. We find the AF and FM intrachain couplings are the dominant terms in the spin Hamiltonian, while the interchain couplings are AF but perturbative. This hierarchy in the coupling strengths and the alternating signs of the intrachain couplings can be understood through their different exchange paths. Our results establish Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 as a weakly coupled alternating AF-FM chain compound and reveal the robustness of the gapped ground state in alternating chains under weak interchain couplings.

Topological and magnetic properties of a noncollinear spin state on a honeycomb lattice in a magnetic field

Here, this paper studies the topological and magnetic properties of a noncollinear spin state on a honeycomb lattice that evolves from coplanar to ferromagnetic with a magnetic field applied along the z axis. The coplanar state is stabilized by nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions, single-ion anisotropy along z, and DzyaloshinskiiMoriya interactions between next-nearest-neighbor sites. Below the critical field H$_c$ that aligns the spins, the magnetic unit cell contains six sites and the spin dynamics contains six magnon modes. Although the classical energy is degenerate with respect to the twist angle φ between nearest-neighbor spins, the dependence of the free energy on φ at low temperatures is dominated by the magnon zero-point energy, which contains extremum at φ = πl/3 for integer l. The only unique ground states GS(φ) have l = 0 or 1. For H < H$'_c$, the zero-point energy has minima at even l and the ground state is GS(0); for H$'_c$ < H < H$'_c$, the zero-point energy has minima at odd l and the ground state is GS(π/3). In GS(0), the magnon density of states exhibits five distinct topological phases with increasing field associated with the opening and closing of energy gaps between two or three magnonic bands. While the Berry curvature vanishes for the coplanar φ = 0 phase in zero field, the Berry curvature and Chern numbers exhibit signatures of the five topological phases below H$'_c$. Whereas the Berry curvature and Chern number are sensitive to changes in the magnon density of states within GS(π/3), the inelastic spectrum S(k,ω) is sensitive to changes in the intensity of the magnon modes in the different magnetic phases GS(0) and GS(π/3) rather than the five topological phases within GS(π/3).

Spiral Spin Liquid on a Honeycomb Lattice

Spiral spin liquids are correlated paramagnetic states with degenerate propagation vectors forming a continuous ring or surface in reciprocal space. On the honeycomb lattice, spiral spin liquids present a novel route to realize emergent fracton excitations, quantum spin liquids, and topological spin textures, yet experimental realizations remain elusive. Here, using neutron scattering, we show that a spiral spin liquid is realized in the van der Waals honeycomb magnet FeCl3. A continuous ring of scattering is directly observed, which indicates the emergence of an approximate U(1) symmetry in momentum space. Our work demonstrates that spiral spin liquids can be achieved in two-dimensional systems and provides a promising platform to study the fracton physics in spiral spin liquids.

Structure transition and zigzag magnetic order in Ir/Rh-substituted honeycomb lattice α - RuCl 3

Here, we report magnetization and neutron diffraction studies on crystal and magnetic structures of Ir- and Rh-substituted honeycomb lattice α-RuCl 3 . The iridium or rhodium atoms are distributed at the Ru site with little structural modification. Both systems undergo a room-temperature monoclinic C2/m to low-temperature trigonal $R\bar{3}$ phase transformation with a large recoverable hysteresis. At low temperature, a zigzag spin order is observed with the same characteristic wave vector (0,0.5,1) as in the parent α-RuCl 3 . Detailed magnetic structure refinement reveals an ordered moment of 0.32(5)µB/Ru and an upper boundary of canting angle of 15(4)º away from the basal plane at 5 K for the 10% Ir-substituted α-RuCl 3 , which is different from the 0.45–0.73 µB/Ru and 32°–48° canting angle reported in the parent compound α-RuCl 3 . The observation of unchanged RuCl 6 local octahedral environment, reduced ordered magnetic moment size and canting angle compared to previously reported highlights the potential to study quantum spin-liquid behavior through nonmagnetic ion doping.

Symmetry analysis of tensors in the honeycomb lattice of edge-sharing octahedra

In this work, we obtain the most general forms of rank-2 and rank-3 tensors allowed by the crystal symmetries of the honeycomb lattice of edge-sharing octahedra for crystals belonging to different crystallographic point groups, including the monoclinic point group 2/$\textit{m}$ and the trigonal (or rhombohedral) point group $\bar{3}$. Our results are relevant for two-dimensional materials, such as α-RuCl 3 , CrI 3 , and the honeycomb iridates. We focus on the magnetic-field-dependent thermal conductivity tensor $κ_{ij}$ (H), which describes a system’s longitudinal and thermal Hall responses, for the cases when the magnetic field is applied along high-symmetry directions, perpendicular to the plane and in the plane. We highlight some unexpected results, such as the equality of fully longitudinal components to partially transverse components in rank-3 tensors for

Canted antiferromagnetic order and spin dynamics in the honeycomb-lattice compound Tb 2 Ir 3 Ga 9

Here, single-crystal neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, bulk magnetization measurements, and first-principles calculations are used to investigate the magnetic properties of the honeycomb lattice Tb 2 Ir 3 Ga 9 . While the R ln 2 magnetic contribution to the low-temperature entropy indicates a J eff = 1 / 2 moment for the lowest-energy crystal-field doublet, the Tb 3 + ions form a canted antiferromagnetic structure below 12.5 K. Due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, the Tb moments in the a b plane are slightly canted towards b with a canted moment of 1.22 μ B per formula unit. A minimal x x z spin Hamiltonian is used to simultaneously fit the spin-wave frequencies along the high-symmetry directions and the field dependence of the magnetization along the three crystallographic axes. Long-range magnetic interactions for both in-plane and out-of-plane couplings up to the second nearest neighbors are needed to account for the observed static and dynamic properties. The z component of the exchange interactions between Tb moments is larger than the x and y components. This compound also exhibits bond-dependent exchange with negligible nearest-neighbor exchange coupling between moments parallel and perpendicular to the 4 f orbitals. Despite the J eff = 1 / 2 moments, the spin Hamiltonian is denominated by a large in-plane anisotropy K z ~ – 1 meV . DFT calculations confirm the antiferromagnetic ground state and the substantial interplane coupling at larger Tb-Tb distances.

Magnetic ground states of honeycomb lattice Wigner crystals

Lattice Wigner crystal states stabilized by long-range Coulomb interactions have recently been realized in two-dimensional moiré materials. We employ large-scale unrestricted Hartree-Fock techniques to unveil the magnetic phase diagrams of honeycomb lattice Wigner crystals. For the three lattice filling factors with the largest charge gaps, $n=2/3,1/2,1/3$, the magnetic phase diagrams contain multiple phases, including ones with non-collinear and non-coplanar spin arrangements. We discuss magnetization evolution with external magnetic field, which has potential as an experimental signature of exotic spin states. Our theoretical results could potentially be validated in moiré materials formed from group VI transition metal dichalcogenide twisted homobilayers.

Static and dynamic magnetic properties of honeycomb lattice antiferromagnets Na 2 M 2 TeO 6 , M = Co and Ni

The magnetic structures and spin dynamics of Na 2 CO 2 TeO 6 and Na 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 are investigated by means of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements and the results are discussed in the context of a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice with strong spin-orbit coupling. The large number of parameters involved in the Hamiltonian model is evaluated by using an iterative optimization algorithm capable of extracting model solutions and simultaneously estimating their uncertainty. The analyses indicate that both Co 2+ (d 7 ) and Ni 2+ (d 8 ) antiferromagnets realize bond-dependent anisotropic nearest-neighbor interactions and support the theoretical predictions for the realization of Kitaev physics in 3 d electron systems with effective spins S = 1/2 and 1. By studying the Na-doped system Na 2.4 Ni 2 TeO 6 , we show that the control of Na content can provide an effective route for fine-tuning the magnetic lattice dimensionality, as well as to controlling the bond-dependent anisotropic interactions.

Magnetoelastic-coupling-assisted first-order antiferromagnetic transitions in the corrugated honeycomb-lattice compounds (Ca, Sr) ⁢Mn 2 ⁢ P 2

Understanding the origin of unconventional magnetic order is a central theme in the research field of functional quantum materials for spin-dependent applications. In general, a paramagnetic (PM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition is of thermodynamically second order in nature in the absence of a magnetic field. In the magnetically frustrated corrugated-honeycomb lattice compounds (Ca, Sr) ⁢Mn 2 ⁢ P 2 , electrical resistivity 𝜌 measurements in the 𝑎⁢𝑏 plane are reported to exhibit sharp discontinuities at the respective PM to AFM ordering temperatures 𝑇 N = 69.5 and 53 K, respectively, signifying the unusual first-order nature of the AFM transition. To reveal the origin of such anomalous transitions, high-resolution linear thermal-expansion measurements are reported for both CaMn 2 ⁢P 2 and SrMn 2 ⁢ P 2 in the 𝑎⁢𝑏 plane and along the 𝑐 axis using capacitance dilatometry. The thermal expansion measurements show a sharp discontinuity in Δ⁢𝐿/𝐿 at 𝑇 N , yielding a diverging behavior in the thermal expansion coefficient 𝛼⁡(𝑇) associated with strong magnetoelastic coupling, driving the first-order AFM transition in CaMn 2 ⁢P 2 . However, this effect is weaker in SrMn 2 ⁢P 2 , consistent with the magnetic entropy changes 𝑆⁡(𝑇) obtained from the heat-capacity measurements. Temperature-dependent 𝑎⁢𝑏-plane x-ray diffraction measurements for CaMn 2 ⁢ P 2 near its 𝑇 N yield a volume thermal expansion coefficient consistent with literature data for other materials. The uniaxial pressure derivatives of 𝑇 N in the two compounds are found to be respectively opposite in sign, presumably due to the different magnetic structures.

Quantum stabilization of unexpected ordered phases on the honeycomb lattice

In this work, I discuss and showcase the utility of the method called minimally-augmented spin-wave theory (MAGSWT) as a relatively simple semi-analytical approach to the phase diagrams of quantum magnets. It complements numerical methods by providing physical insight into which states are competitive and by yielding approximate phase boundaries that agree well with much more numerically intensive calculations. This approach enabled me to construct the faithful phase diagrams of two paradigmatic honeycomb-lattice models in the quantum S=1/2 limit, the J 1 –J 3 FM-AF and J 1 –J 2 AF models, for the collinear quantum phases that replace or extend the classical ones. The results are in good qualitative and semi-quantitative agreement with state-of-the-art numerical studies for these models, correctly capturing the emergence of unexpected quantum phases and the suppression of classically favored spiral orders by quantum fluctuations. This study provides a much-needed important guidance to the ongoing theoretical and experimental searches of the unconventional quantum states. This work will be of significant and timely interest to both theorists and experimentalists in the field of quantum magnetism, broadly defined.
