Studying the Impact of Momentary Cessation of IBRs Compliant With IEEE Std. 2800-2022 on Transmission Line Protection Elements

This paper examines the impact of inverter-based resource (IBR) momentary cessation timing on transmission system protection relays. IEEE Std. 2800 mandates voltage ride-through, requiring IBRs to remain online during voltage disturbances. However, for severe voltage dips (|V| = 0.1 p.u.), the standard permits current blocking. In practice, vendors implement momentary cessation with varying delays, potentially affecting relay operation if IBRs cease too early. This article studies the impact of the time IBRs enter momentary cessation on transmission line protective relays. Using an electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation, this study models IBR momentary cessation with tunable delays in a realistic transmission network. COMTRADE files generated from EMT simulations are analyzed in MATLAB using detailed protective relay models. Results indicate that IBRs must sustain operation for at least one cycle to ensure proper relay response; otherwise, relays may fail to oper- ate. These findings guide IBR vendors in optimizing momentary cessation settings to enhance transmission line protection.

The ac power line protection for an IEEE 587 Class B environment

The 587B series of protectors are unique, low clamping voltage transient suppressors to protect ac-powered equipment from the 6000V peak open-circuit voltage and 3000A short circuit current as defined in IEEE standard 587 for Category B transients. The devices, which incorporate multiple-stage solid-state protector components, were specifically designed to operate under multiple exposures to maximum threat levels in this severe environment. The output voltage peaks are limited to 350V under maximum threat conditions for a 120V ac power line, thus providing adequate protection to vulnerable electronic equipment. The principle of operation and test performance data is discussed.

Error detecting capabilities of the shortened Hamming codes adopted for error detection in IEEE Standard 802.3

The error-detecting capabilities of the shortened Hamming codes adopted for error detection in IEEE Standard 802.3 are investigated. These codes are also used for error detection in the data link layer of the Ethernet, a local area network. The weight distributions for various code lengths are calculated to obtain the probability of undetectable error and that of detectable error for a binary symmetric channel with bit-error rate between 0.00001 and 1/2.

GE networked mass storage solutions supporting IEEE network mass storage model

The General Electric Government Communications Systems Department (GE/GCSD) has developed a near real time digital data storage and retrieval system that extends the capabilities currently available in today's marketplace. This system called DuraStore uses commercially available rotary tape drive technology with ANSI/IEEE standards for automated magnetic tape based data storage. It uses a nonproprietary approach to satisfy a wide range of data rates and storage capabilities requirements and is compliant with the IEEE Network Storage Model. Rotary tape drives, standard interfaces, application specific hardware/software, networked automated tape libraries, library administrator, write protection, volume/physical media linkages, and maximum resource utilization are addressed.

Verification of IEEE Compliant Subtractive Division Algorithms

A parameterized definition of subtractive floating point division algorithms is presented and verified using PVS. The general algorithm is proven to satisfy a formal definition of an IEEE standard for floating point arithmetic. The utility of the general specification is illustrated using a number of different instances of the general algorithm.

NASA/IEEE MSST 2004 Twelfth NASA Goddard Conference on Mass Storage Systems and Technologies in cooperation with the Twenty-First IEEE Conference on Mass Storage Systems and Technologies

MSST2004, the Twelfth NASA Goddard / Twenty-first IEEE Conference on Mass Storage Systems and Technologies has as its focus long-term stewardship of globally-distributed storage. The increasing prevalence of e-anything brought about by widespread use of applications based, among others, on the World Wide Web, has contributed to rapid growth of online data holdings. A study released by the School of Information Management and Systems at the University of California, Berkeley, estimates that over 5 exabytes of data was created in 2002. Almost 99 percent of this information originally appeared on magnetic media. The theme for MSST2004 is therefore both timely and appropriate. There have been many discussions about rapid technological obsolescence, incompatible formats and inadequate attention to the permanent preservation of knowledge committed to digital storage. Tutorial sessions at MSST2004 detail some of these concerns, and steps being taken to alleviate them. Over 30 papers deal with topics as diverse as performance, file systems, and stewardship and preservation. A number of short papers, extemporaneous presentations, and works in progress will detail current and relevant research on the MSST2004 theme.

2024 IEEE GRSS Data Fusion Contest Flood Rapid Mapping

The Challenge Task As a result of climate change, extreme hydrometeorological events are becoming increasingly frequent. Flood rapid mapping products play an important role in informing flood emergency response and management. These maps are generated quickly from remote sensing data during or after an event to show the extent of flooding. They provide important information for emergency response, and damage assessment. The aim of this challenge is to develop data fusion algorithms that generate flood maps by processing spatial data from a variety of sources. The goal of this IEEE challenge (sponsored by NASA and CNES) is to design and develop an algorithm that will combine multi-source data to classify flood surface water extent–that is, water and non-water areas. Provided data sources include optical and SAR remote sensing images as well as a digital terrain model. The output is a gridded flood map where each grid cell is labeled water or non-water. The difficulty of detecting flooded areas can vary greatly depending on the conditions in the area of interest and the event. This data fusion challenge has two tracks representing this variance.
