Examination of How Well Long-Range-Corrected Density Functionals Satisfy the Ionization Energy Theorem

For this work, we calculated the vertical ionization energies (VIE) of 99 species in two ways to examine the accuracy of several long-range-corrected (LC) hybrid meta functionals in comparison with a gradient approximation (GA), global hybrids, and doubly hybrids. In the category of LC functionals, we examined both those with meta ingredients (i.e., that depend on the kinetic energy density) and those without them. The LC-hybrid meta functionals examined are M11, revM11, M11plus, and ωB97M-V. The reference data used to assess accuracy consist of 95 molecules and 4 atoms in the GW100 set. The two methods studied are the ΔSCF method (involving the difference of neutral and cation self-consistent field (SCF) energies) and the ionization energy theorem (involving the orbital energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital, HOMO). We calculated linear correlation coefficients (r 2 ) and mean absolute deviations (MADs) between each approach and the reference VIE value from the CCSD(T)/def2-TZVPP level of theory. We compared the new LC-hybrid meta calculations to calculations with the 10 functionals in a previous VIE study by Brémond et al. and to the calculations with LC-BLYP (LC-Becke, Lee–Yang–Parr), CAM-B3LYP (Coulomb-attenuating-method Becke-3-parameter Lee–Yang–Parr), LC-ωHPBE, and ωB97X-D. The results show that Minnesota LC-hybrid meta functionals have the smallest mean absolute deviation of ionization energy theorem VIEs with the reference data; the LC-ωHPBE functional also does quite well in this test. This is very encouraging and indicates that LC-hybrid meta functionals would be the best starting points for the tuning strategy that has been shown to be a very good procedure for improving time-dependent density functional calculations, and it also helps explain the good success of LC-hybrid meta functionals for molecular excitation energies.

Developing a Th Resonance Ionization Scheme: for Future Use in Age Dating SNM by Resonance Ionization Mass Spectrometry

We report the development of a Th resonance ionization scheme (RIS) for analyzing Th isotopes by resonance ionization mass spectrometry (RIMS) to enable age-dating via the 230 Th/ 234 U inter-elemental pair. This report summarizes the work that completes the first of two tasks that are required for developing U-Th dating via RIMS at the Laser Ionization of Neutrals (LION) laboratory at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The first task involves choosing and vetting an appropriate Th RIS for the LION instrument and simultaneous U and Th analysis.

Electron-Impact Ionization and Dissociative Ionization of Biomolecules

It is well recognized that secondary electrons play an important role in radiation damage to humans. Particularly important is the damage of DNA by electrons, potentially leading to mutagenesis. Molecular-level study of electron interaction with DNA provides information on the damage pathways and dominant mechanisms. Our study of electron-impact ionization of DNA fragments uses the improved binary-encounter dipole model and covers DNA bases, sugar phosphate backbone, and nucleotides. An additivity principle is observed. For example, the sum of the ionization cross sections of the separate deoxyribose and phosphate fragments is in close agreement with the C3(sup prime)- and C5 (sup prime)-deoxyribose-phospate cross sections, differing by less than 5%. Investigation of tandem double lesion initiated by electron-impact dissociative ionization of guanine, followed by proton reaction with the cytosine in the Watson-Crick pair, is currently being studied to see if tandem double lesion can be initiated by electron impact. Up to now only OH-induced tandem double lesion has been studied.

Enhancement of Uranium Ionization Efficiencies Using Zn-MOF-74 Derived Nanoporous Ion Emitters for Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry

The recent introduction of nano-porous ion emitters (nano-PIEs) formed from metal organic frameworks (MOFs) has demonstrated the potential to enhance sensitivity for thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS). Nano-PIEs take advantage of the parent MOF’s chemical and structural tunability to form scaffolds for ion emitters. A study by Barpaga et al. 2023 on MOF-74 as the parent material found that with high volatility metals in their framework uranium sample utilization efficiency (SUE) increases by up to nine-fold (e.g., Zn-MOF-74) compared to that of the analyte on a bare filament (~0.05%). Here, in this study, we investigate the performance of Zn-MOF-74 to maximize uranium efficiencies at the trace level (= 10 -12 g) by altering the parent MOF morphology and chemistry (i.e., MOF crystal sizes and thermal degradation) and optimizing its integration with TIMS (i.e., MOF mass on a filament and ramp conditions). We observed improvement in SUE up to 20 times (≤1.0%) that of a bare filament load when nano-PIEs derived from nanocrystals of Zn-MOF-74 were heated under a specific current ramp condition. This demonstrates that rates of nano-PIE structural collapse during TIMS analysis and the subsequently formed nanomaterials (and their features) can be tuned to control analyte ionization.

Constraints on Lightly Ionizing Particles from CDMSlite

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search low ionization threshold experiment (CDMSlite) achieved effcient detection of very small recoil energies in its germanium target, resulting in sensitivity to Lightly Ionizing Particles (LIPs) in a previously unexplored region of charge, mass, and velocity parameter space. We report first direct-detection limits on the vertical intensity of cosmogenically-produced LIPs with an electric charge smaller than e/(3x10^5), as well as the strongest limits for charge <= e/160, with a minimum vertical intensity of 1.36 x 10^-7 cm^-2s^-1sr^-1 at charge e/160. These results apply over a wide range of LIP masses (5 MeV/c^2 to 100 TeV/c^2) and cover a wide range of beta-gamma values (0.1--10^6), thus excluding non-relativistic LIPs with beta-gamma as small as 0.1 for the first time.

Metabolomic Profiling of Wild-type and Mutant Soybean Root Nodules Using Laser-ablation Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry Reveals Altered Metabolism

The establishment of the nitrogen-fixing symbiosis between soybean and Bradyrhizobium japonicum is complex. In order to document the changes in plant metabolism due to the symbiosis, we utilized laser ablation electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LAESI-MS) for in situ metabolic profiling of wild-type nodules, nodules infected with a B. japonicum nifH mutant unable to fix nitrogen, nodules doubly infected by both strains, and nodules formed on plants mutated in the stearoyl-acyl carrier protein desaturase (sacpd-c) gene, which were previously shown to have altered nodule ultrastructure. Results showed that the relative abundance of fatty acids, purines, and lipids was significantly changed in response to the symbiosis. The nifH mutant nodules had elevated levels of jasmonic acid (JA), correlating with signs of nitrogen deprivation. Nodules resulting from the mixed inoculant displayed similar, overlapping metabolic distributions within the sectors of effective (fix+) and ineffective (nifH mutant, fix-) endosymbionts. These data are inconsistent with the notion that plant sanctioning is cell autonomous. Nodules lacking sacpd-c displayed an elevation of soyasaponins and organic acids in the central necrotic regions. This study demonstrates the utility of LAESI-MS for high-throughput screening of plant phenotypes. Overall, nodules disrupted in the symbiosis were elevated in metabolites related to plant defense.
