Synergistic Solvent-Surface Interactions Enable Alkyne Semihydrogenation at Palladium

Enabling higher yield and better selectivity for fine-chemical synthesis through heterogeneous catalysis is intricately linked to the interplay of active sites, reaction conditions, and mass transfer influence provided by the catalyst. Alkyne semihydrogenation is ubiquitous in the production of bulk chemicals in the pharmaceutical, polymer, or fine-chemical industries, but product selectivity remains a major challenge. Here, in this study, we demonstrate that the design of catalysts encompassing nickel (Ni) foams as contiguous monolith supports, decorated with ultralow loading of Pd/PdO x nanoparticles on a carbonized polydopamine interface and tuned with a thin layer of Al 2 O 3 , in conjunction with an optimized reaction environment leads to highly selective alkyne semihydrogenation. The reactions demonstrate good functional group tolerance and applicability to flow reactor systems. Combined computational and experimental studies are presented to describe the synergistic effect between the solvent-surface interaction and the degree of Pd surface reduction that are necessary to promote this selectivity. The system highlights the opportunity for catalyst-solvent codesign as a benign alternative to more complex reactants featuring extrinsic poisons or less-favored dopants.

LDBT instead of DBTL: combining machine learning and rapid cell-free testing

Synthetic biology is defined by Design-Build-Test-Learn cycles. Machine learning has yielded significant improvements in protein design; thus, we propose that “Learning” can precede “Design” to optimize engineering workflows. Additionally, shifting to cell-free platforms will further accelerate “Build” and “Test” capabilities by allowing the rapid expression of proteins and functional testing without the need for cellular transformation or isolation.

Overview of the first Wendelstein 7-X long pulse campaign with fully water-cooled plasma facing components

After a long device enhancement phase, scientific operation resumed in 2022. The main new device components are the water cooling of all plasma facing components and the new water-cooled high heat flux divertor units. Water cooling allowed for the first long-pulse operation campaign. A maximum discharge length of 8 min was achieved with a total heating energy of 1.3 GJ. Safe divertor operation was demonstrated in attached and detached mode. Stable detachment is readily achieved in some magnetic configurations but requires impurity seeding in configurations with small magnetic pitch angle within the edge islands. Progress was made in the characterization of transport mechanisms across edge magnetic islands: Measurement of the potential distribution and flow pattern reveals that the islands are associated with a strong poloidal drift, which leads to rapid convection of energy and particles from the last closed flux surface into the scrape-off layer. Using the upgraded plasma heating systems, advanced heating scenarios were developed, which provide improved energy confinement comparable to the scenario, in which the record triple product for stellarators was achieved in the previous operation campaign. However, a magnetic configuration-dependent critical heating power limit of the electron cyclotron resonance heating was observed. Exceeding the respective power limit leads to a degradation of the confinement.

Solar Energy Innovation Network 2017-2024: Abbreviated Final Technical Report

This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Solar Energy Technologies Office under the Agreement/Award Number 32954 for Solar Energy Innovation Network (SEIN) Project, 2017-2024. SEIN is a dynamic program that assembles diverse teams of stakeholders to research solutions to real-world challenges associated with solar energy adoption. In conjunction with its partner organizations, NREL implemented the program by providing research, analysis, and technical expertise directly to project teams and groups of teams (cohorts), by facilitating networked learning through cohorts and peer exchange, and by facilitating dissemination and replication of solutions and lessons learned among stakeholders across the U.S. with similar challenges.

Screening Tool for Equitable Adoption and Deployment of Solar (STEADy Solar)

The Screening Tool for Equitable Adoption and DeploYment of Solar (STEADy Solar) is a database and mapping tool designed to promoting clean energy investments for low-income communities across the United States. The tool indicates locations that may be eligible for the Investment Tax Credit bonus adders defined in the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and combines this information with demographics, social vulnerability, solar technical potential, solar economics (modeled net present value), and building counts by use-type. It can be used by states, municipalities, community-based organizations, developers, and researchers to identify sites where solar projects may be economical and where federal incentives may be available to support equitable adoption of solar. Specific values include: Areas eligible for the Energy Communities Tax Credit Bonus Program (including brownfield site counts) Areas eligible for the Low Income Communities Bonus Credit Program (including Tribal Lands, and covered affordable housing project counts) Areas categorized as disadvantaged by Justice40 Commercial and Residential Solar economics characterized by the Net Present Value and Simple Payback Period Total Population, Race, and Ethnicity Median Household Income, Poverty rate, Household Tenure Social Vulnerability Count of buildings, developable rooftop solar capacity (in kWdc) and estimated annual generation potential (in kWh) on four building types: Government General Services, Government Emergency Response, Grade Schools, and Colleges/Universities. The linked report describes the STEADy dataset metadata and presents high level insights from the data. The downloadable and formatted excel dataset makes it easy for users to gain insights for their locations. Supporting .csv and shapefiles provide users with the full data to run their own analyses on equitable solar siting.
