Vibronic spectra of Cu(2+) in ZnTe

Infrared-absorption spectra of substitutional Cu(2+) ions in ZnTe have been measured at 4.6 K. Several distinct absorption peaks are observed between 800 and 2000/cm. Absorption peaks at 1002 and 1069/cm are identified as zero-phonon lines arising from 2T2-2E transitions. Between 1069 and 2000/cm, several sets of sharp absorption lines are seen to recur regularly at an interval of 210/cm, corresponding to the LO phonon energy. Within each set distinct vibronic sidebands that cannot be identified with critical-point energies of TA, LA, TO or LO phonon modes are observed. A dynamic Jahn-Teller effect, involving coupling between a single-phonon mode and the electronic states of the 2E level, is proposed to account for the observed spectra.

Electron-Impact Ionization of Methane

We report a study of the total ionization of CH_4 by electron impact and its dissociative ionization from the ^2T_2 channel. The calculation of the total ionization cross section uses the improved Binary-Encounter-Dipole model (iBED).(W. A Huo, Phys. Rev. A (submitted for publication).) The dipole Born cross section in the model is expressed in terms of a three-term representation and the optical oscillator strengths are taken from Backx and Van der Wiel.(C. Backx and M. J. Van der Wiel, I Phys. B 18) 3020 (1975). The nuclear dynamics for the dissociation of the ^2T_2 channel is studied using the statistical model. A search of the potential energy surface of the ^2T_2 state of CH_4^+ shows two minima, of C_2v and C_3v symmetries, in agreement with earlier calculations. ((a) K. Takeshita, J. Chem. Phys. 86), 329 (1987). (b) R. F. Frey and E. R. Davidson, J. Chem. Phys. 88, 1775 (1988). The dissociation of the CH_4^+ to CH_3^+ + H goes through a saddle point. Comparison with recent experimental data will be presented and the role of Jahn-Teller effect discussed.

Effects of Lattice Distortion and Jahn-Teller Coupling on the Magnetoresistance of La(sub 0.7)Ca(sub 0.3)MnO(sub 3) and La(sub 0.5)Ca(sub 0.5)CoO(sub 3) Epitaxial Films

Studies of La(sub 0.7)Ca(sub 0.3)MnO(sub 3) epitaxial films on substrates with a range of lattice constants reveal two dominant contributions to the occurence of colossal negative magnetoresistance (CMR) in these manganites:...We therefore suggest that lattice polaron conduction associated with Jahn-Teller coupling is essential for the occurence of CMR, and that lattice distortion further enhances the CMR effect in the manganites.

Effect of temperature on the electronic instability and the crystalline phase change at low temperature of V3Si type compounds

Equations assuming a Jahn-Teller type effect for the d band electrons in V3Si compounds are given, and the results of free-energy change calculations by using some approximations based on these equations are depicted. The tetragonal structure is converted to cubic as the temperature rises past T sub m which is calculated as 13 K. by the Batterman-Barrett method and is measured to be 20-5 K. Other parameters such as change of C sub p with temperature are predicted better.

Ultrafast local demagnetization in 𝑑 6 systems via driven Jahn-Teller distortions

Ultrafast control of spin orientations without relying on highly nonequilibrium electron distributions offers a new pathway for femtosecond spintronics. It is shown that excitation of specific vibronic modes can drive a substantial demagnetization of a local moment relative to the magnetization axis, while preserving its total spin quantum number. Using a fully quantum many-body treatment of a local 𝑆=2 (𝑑 6 ) many-body spin coupled to a driven Jahn-Teller mode with quantum dissipation, we find that the projected spin can be strongly reduced via a Jahn-Teller-induced 𝑥⁢𝑦↑→𝑦⁢𝑧/𝑧⁢𝑥↓ transition, which occurs without additional Coulomb exchange cost. The excited state subsequently relaxes back to its original electronic configuration with a rotated spin direction, enabling spin reorientation without generating a large net angular momentum in the electronic subsystem.

Intercalation induced quasi-freestanding layer in TiSe 2

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is employed to study the electronic structure of bulk TiSe 2 before and after doping with potassium impurities. A splitting in the conduction band into two branches is observed after room-temperature deposition. The splitting energy increases to approximately 130 meV when the sample is cooled to 40 K. One branch exhibits a nondispersive two-dimensional feature, while the other shows the characteristics of three-dimensional bulk band dispersion. Core-level spectroscopy suggests that the K impurities predominantly occupy the intercalated sites within the van der Waals gap. Furthermore, the results indicate the formation of a quasi-freestanding TiSe 2 layer. Additionally, doping completely suppresses the periodic lattice distortion in the surface region. These findings are further supported by density functional theory calculations, which compare the band structure of monolayer and bulk TiSe 2 with experimental data. Thus, the dimensional and intrinsic electronic properties of 1⁢𝑇−TiSe 2 can be controlled through the intercalation procedure used in this work.

Gas-mediated trace element incorporation into rhyolite-hosted topaz: A synchrotron microbeam XAS study

Magmatic gas exsolving during late-stage cooling of shallow magmas has been considered an important facilitator of low-pressure alteration and metal transport. However, the chemical properties of such gas, particularly its metal transport mechanisms and capacity, remain elusive. Trace elements in minerals produced by gas-mediated surface reaction or precipitation from gas capture details of gas composition and reaction pathways. However, interpretation of mineral trace element contents is dependent on understanding crystallographic controls on gas/mineral partitioning. Here, this work investigates the structural accommodation of As, Mn, Ga, Ge, Fe, and Ti in vapor-deposited topaz of vesicular topaz rhyolite from the Thomas Range, Utah, through single-crystal synchrotron microbeam X-ray techniques on picogram quantities of those trace elements. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) data indicates that these elements are incorporated into topaz as As 5+ , Fe 3+ , Mn 3+ , Ti 4+ , Ga 3+ , and Ge 4+ . Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis for these trace elements, compared to EXAFS of structural Al and Si, reveals that As 5+ and Ge 4+ are incorporated directly into the tetrahedral site of the topaz structure, with the octahedral site accommodating Mn 3+ , Fe 3+ , Ga 3+ , and Ti 4+ . For As 5+ and Fe 3+ , the structural impact of substitution extends to at least second neighbors (other elements were only resolvable to first neighbors). Further interpretation of the EXAFS results suggests that the substitution of Ti 4+ results in increased distortion of the octahedral site, while the other trace elements induce more uniform expansion correlating in magnitude to their ionic radius. Comparison of quantified X-ray fluorescence (XRF) data for two topaz crystals from this rhyolite reveals variable trace element concentrations for As 5+ , Fe 3+ , Ga 3+ , and Ti 4+ , reflective of a source gas undersaturated in these trace elements changing in concentration over the period of topaz deposition. The identical Ge 4+ content of the two topaz crystals suggests that Ge 4+ in the gas was buffered by the growth of another Ge 4+ -bearing phase, such as quartz. The very low Mn 3+ content in the topaz crystals does not reflect the abundance of Mn 3+ in the gas (saturation of Mn is evidenced by coexisting bixbyite). Instead, it suggests a strong Jahn-Teller inhibitory effect to the substitution of Mn 3+ for Al 3+ in the distorted octahedral site of topaz. It is proposed that exsolution of an HF-enriched gas from cooling rhyolitic magma led to local scouring of Al, Si, and trace metals from the magma. Once topaz crystals nucleated, self-catalyzed reactions that recycle HF led to continued growth of topaz.

Experimental determination of energy-level structures of diamond silicon-vacancy centers in off-axis magnetic fields

Here, we report the development of an experimental approach to efficiently determine the energy level structure of an individual silicon vacancy (SiV) center in a magnetic field along an arbitrary direction. This approach uses two coupling rates (one each for the ground and the excited states) to characterize the combined effects of static strain and dynamic Jahn-Teller coupling and exploits the fact that orbital Zeeman effects vanish when the magnetic field is normal to the SiV axis. With an analytical expression for the energy level structure of the SiV under a transverse magnetic field, the two coupling rates can be directly derived from two measurements: one on the frequency separation between two spin-conserved transitions and the other on the coherent population trapping resonance of the SiV ground spin states. A detailed comparison between the numerical calculation and the experimental result on the dependence of the spin-conserved splitting on both the amplitude and direction of the magnetic field further reveals unequal orbital magnetic coupling for the ground and excited states, indicating that unequal orbital quenching factors are needed for an accurate description of the SiV energy level structure in a magnetic field.

Toward Stable, High‐Energy, Partially Disordered Mn‐Rich Spinel Cathodes by Revealing and Mitigating Surface Degradation

Mn-rich cathodes balance performance and sustainability but suffer from limited cyclability due to Mn dissolution and cathode-to-anode crosstalk. The Jahn-Teller (J-T) effect of Mn 3+ is often linked to the above phenomena, such as in spinel LiMn 2 O 4 . However, in typical voltage ranges, significant Mn 3+ only appears near the end of discharge, highlighting the need to reassess its role in driving Mn dissolution, structural degradation, and battery performance. Here, the spinel cathode's degree of disorder is tailored to expand the Mn redox range, enabling segmentation into J-T active and less active voltage ranges. Cycling at segmented voltage windows reveals surface degradation mechanisms with and without the major J-T effect. Despite a stronger J-T effect below 3.6 V vs. Li/Li + , Mn dissolution is less significant than above 3.6 V. Expanding the cycling window to 2.0–4.3 V causes severe degradation as the J-T active range induces a tetragonal phase and Mn 2+ -rich surface, driving Mn dissolution and consuming Li-ion inventory in full cells. Reducing electrolyte acidity minimizes Mn 3+ disproportionation, enabling a stable dopant-free Mn-only cathode with a 250 mAh g −1 specific capacity. These findings demonstrate that full cells using Mn-rich cathodes have the potential to avoid the notorious crosstalk problem through electrolyte engineering.

An integrated in-situ coordination strategy enabling high-performance layered cathodes for sodium-ion batteries

O3-type layered transition metal oxide cathodes hold tremendous potential in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their low cost and high energy density. However, the structure instability associated with detrimental phase transitions and severe interface parasitic reactions exacerbate the material's electrochemical performance degradation. Herein, we develop an integrated in-situ coordination strategy via heteroatomic modulation inducing coherent epitaxial layer to collaboratively enhance the overall framework robustness from surface to bulk. The theoretical calculation and multiple in/ex-situ characterizations demonstrate the charge density around oxygen is redistributed, which promotes the electron localization, thus widening the NaO 2 lattice space and accelerating the Na + transport dynamics. Furthermore, the formed strengthened oxygen bond energy effectively distributes the long-range coordination of Mn 3+ O 6 octahedron, thereby alleviating Jahn-Teller distortion and local stress. Importantly, the in-situ formed conformal buffer layer dramatically relieves the adverse interface side reactions, facilitating the construction of robust cathode-electrolyte interface, which ameliorate the whole structure stability of designed materials. Consequently, the optimized NFMZ@NZO-1.0 exhibits the excellent cycling stability with 80.2% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 1C, and delivers a high discharge capacity of 107.1 mAh g −1 at 10C. In conclusion, this distinctive coupling strategy provides valuable insights for developing high-performance layered cathode materials in SIBs.

Analytic gradients for relativistic exact-two-component equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles method

A first implementation of analytic gradients for spinor-based relativistic equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles method using an exact two-component Hamiltonian augmented with atomic mean-field spin–orbit integrals is reported. To demonstrate its applicability, we present calculations of equilibrium structures and harmonic vibrational frequencies for the electronic ground and excited states of the radium mono-amide molecule (RaNH 2 ) and the radium mono-methoxide molecule (RaOCH 3 ). Spin–orbit coupling is shown to quench Jahn–Teller effects in the first excited state of RaOCH 3 , resulting in a C 3v equilibrium structure. Furthermore, the calculations also show that the radium atoms in these molecules serve as efficient optical cycling centers.

Two-Dimensional Ferroelectric Altermagnets: From Model to Material Realization

Multiferroic altermagnets offer new opportunities for magnetoelectric coupling and electrically tunable spintronics. However, due to intrinsic symmetry conflicts between altermagnetism and ferroelectricity, achieving their coexistence, known as ferroelectric altermagnets (FEAM), remains an outstanding challenge, especially in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Here, we propose a universal, symmetry-based design principle for 2D FEAM, supported by tight-binding models and first-principles calculations. We show that lattice distortions can break spin equivalence and introduce the necessary rotation-related symmetry, enabling altermagnetism with electrically reversible spin splitting. Guided by this framework, we identify a family of 2D vanadium oxyhalides and sulfide halides as promising FEAM candidates. In these compounds, pseudo Jahn-Teller distortions and Peierls-like dimerization cooperatively establish the required symmetry conditions. Here, we further propose the magneto-optical Kerr effect as an experimental probe to confirm FEAM and its electric spin reversal. Furthermore, our findings provide a practical framework for 2D FEAM and advancing electrically controlled spintronic devices.

New Methods for Predicting Non-Born-Oppenheimer Chemistry

Current methods for modeling non-adiabatic molecular dynamics face fundamental limitations when treating geometric phase effects: quantum mechanical phenomena where nuclear wavepackets acquire phase shifts when encircling conical intersections. Existing approaches either neglect these effects entirely or rely on potential energy surfaces arising from the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, which introduce artificial singularities and can overestimate geometric phase contributions. This project developed a new theoretical framework based on exact factorization (XF) methods to overcome these limitations. We derived mathematical formulations for hybrid quantum-classical XF dynamics that selectively treat critical nuclear degrees of freedom quantum mechanically while propagating others classically. This approach addresses the computational intractability that has previously limited exact methods to toy systems. Key innovations include a new approach to systematically identifying nuclear coordinates requiring quantum treatment, as well as novel implementation strategies that interface with existing quantum chemistry codes. The project also developed a proof-of-concept code for treating Jahn-Teller systems and creation of educational materials on non-adiabatic dynamics geared at the graduate level. The theoretical framework developed will enable future systematically improvable calculations of nuclear quantum effects in realistic molecular systems, filling a critical gap in non-adiabatic dynamics methods. This foundation supports future development of predictive tools for designing energy-relevant photochemical processes where quantum coherence effects may be exploited to control reaction outcomes.

Unraveling the Synergistic effects of La and Al co-doping on Ni/Co-free P2-type Na 0.67 Mn 0.67 Fe 0.33 O 2 layered oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries

Recent developments in high-performance cathodes for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) tend to mitigate use of critical Ni and Co active species to satisfy sustainability. P2-type layered oxide cathodes based on Mn and Fe promise high capacity, sustainability, and low cost on account of the abundance and multiple redox characteristics of Mn and Fe. However, their commercialization is still challenged due to poor cycling stability caused by phase changes emanating from inherent Jahn-Teller distortions. Herein, we propose a novel strategy of trivalent La and Al co-doping to alleviate the drawbacks, innovating a new cathode of Na 0.67 Mn 0.62 Al 0.05 Fe 0.31 La 0.02 O 2 (AlLa). The co-doped cathode delivers an impressive capacity of 128.7 mAh/g at 1C and 106.5 mAh/g at high rate of 5C with a good capacity retention of 85% after 100 cycles. These are superior to the unmodified material, whose specific capacity was 118.6 mAh/g at 1C and 61.1 mAh/g at 5C with a retention of only 65% after 100 cycles. The synergistic contribution from La and Al associated with their improved oxygen bonding, pillaring, and local electronic structural modification stemming from rigid Lasingle bondO and Alsingle bondO bonding resulted in the observed structural and electrochemical improvement. Overall, this research offers novel strategies for designing high-performance cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Ab initio study of the ground state surface of Cu3

The ground state surface of the metallic trimer Cu3 is investigated theoretically. Relativistic and correlation effects are taken into account in ab initio computations, which are calibrated against analogous computations for the 1Sigma(g)+ state of Cu2; the results are presented in tables and analyzed. The Cu3 ground state is found to have a 2B2 C(2v) structure with angle greater than 60 deg, lying 59/cm below a 2A1 C(2v) geometry and 280/cm below the D(3h) equilateral geometry. These findings are shown to be in good agreement with the experimental measurements of Rohlfing and Valentini (1986) and their analysis (in terms of a Jahn-Teller distortion of 2E-prime equilateral-triangle geometry) by Truhlar et al. (1986).

Interplay between electron localization, magnetic order, and Jahn-Teller distortion dictates LiMnO2 phase stability

The development of manganese (Mn)-rich cathodes for Li-ion batteries promises to alleviate potential supply chain bottlenecks in battery manufacturing. Fundamental challenges in Mn-rich cathodes arise from phenomena such as structural changes due to cooperative Jahn-Teller (JT) distortions of in octahedral environments, Mn migration, and phase transformations to spinel-like order, all of which affect the electrochemical performance. These physically complex phenomena motivate an re-examination of the Li-Mn-O rock-salt space, with a focus on the thermodynamics of the prototypical, polymorphs. It is found that the generalized gradient approximation (GGA-PBEsol) and meta-GGA ( ) density functionals with empirically fitted on-site Hubbard corrections yield spurious stable phases for , such as predicting a phase with -like order ( ) to be the ground state instead of the orthorhombic (Pmmn) phase, which is the experimentally known ground state. Accounting for antiferromagnetic order in each structure is shown to have a substantial effect on the total energies and resulting phase stability. By using hybrid-GGA (HSE06) and GGA with self-consistent Hubbard parameters (on-site and inter-site ) calculated from linear response theory, the experimentally observed phase stability trends are recovered. The calculated on-site between Mn- states in the experimentally observed orthorhombic, layered, and spinel phases are significantly smaller than in and disordered layered structures, by within GGA. The smaller values of are shown to be correlated with a collinear ordering of JT distortions, in which all orbitals are oriented in the same direction. This cooperative JT effect can lead to greater electron delocalization from Mn along the states due to increased Mn-O covalency, which contributes to the greater electronic stability compared to the phases with noncollinear JT arrangements. The structures with collinear ordering of JT distortions also generate greater vibrational entropy, which helps stabilize these phases at high temperature. These phases are shown to be strongly insulating with large calculated band gaps , which are computed using HSE06 and .

X-ray dichroism as a probe of orbital quenching and unquenching induced by optically excited Jahn-Teller modes

The use of soft-X-ray spectroscopy to probe changes in the ground-state due to vibronic excitations is studied. The changes in L-edge X-ray absorption on divalent cobalt in the presence of a vibrating Jahn-Teller distortion are calculated. For linear dichroism, a strong dependence on the distortion is obtained reflecting the change in the local quadrupole moment due to the changes in the xy versus yz/zx hole densities during the oscillation. Here, in the presence of a magnetic moment, significant variations in the circular dichroic signal are obtained related to the quenching and unquenching of the orbital angular momentum.
