High-performance HZO/InAlN/GaN MISHEMTs for Ka-band application

This paper reports on the demonstration of microwave power performance at 30 GHz on InAlN/GaN metal–insulator–semiconductor high electron mobility transistor (MISHEMT) on silicon substrate by using the Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 (HZO) as a gate dielectric. Compared with Schottky gate HEMT, the MISHEMT with a gate length (L G ) of 50 nm presents a significantly enhanced performance with an ON/OFF current ratio (I ON /I OFF ) of 9.3 × 10 7 , a subthreshold swing of 130 mV dec -1 , a low drain-induced barrier lowing of 45 mV V -1 , and a breakdown voltage of 35 V. RF characterizations reveal a current gain cutoff frequency (f T ) of 155 GHz and a maximum oscillation frequency (f max ) of 250 GHz, resulting in high (f T × f max ) 1/2 of 197 GHz and the record high Johnson's figure-of-merit (JFOM = f T × BV) of 5.4 THz V among the reported GaN MISHEMTs on Si. Further, the power performance at 30 GHz exhibits a maximum output power of 1.36 W mm -1 , a maximum power gain of 12.3 dB, and a peak power-added efficiency of 21%, demonstrating the great potential of HZO/InAlN/GaN MISHEMTs for the Ka-band application.

pKPDB: a protein data bank extension database of p Ka and pI theoretical values

Abstract Summary pKa values of ionizable residues and isoelectric points of proteins provide valuable local and global insights about their structure and function. These properties can be estimated with reasonably good accuracy using Poisson–Boltzmann and Monte Carlo calculations at a considerable computational cost (from some minutes to several hours). pKPDB is a database of over 12 M theoretical pKa values calculated over 120k protein structures deposited in the Protein Data Bank. By providing precomputed pKa and pI values, users can retrieve results instantaneously for their protein(s) of interest while also saving countless hours and resources that would be spent on repeated calculations. Furthermore, there is an ever-growing imbalance between experimental pKa and pI values and the number of resolved structures. This database will complement the experimental and computational data already available and can also provide crucial information regarding buried residues that are under-represented in experimental measurements. Availability and implementation Gzipped csv files containing p Ka and isoelectric point values can be downloaded from https://pypka.org/pKPDB. To query a single PDB code please use the PypKa free server at https://pypka.org. The pKPDB source code can be found at https://github.com/mms-fcul/pKPDB. Supercooled Liquid Water Detection Capabilities from Ka-Band Doppler Profiling Radars: Moment-Based Algorithm Formulation and Assessment

The occurrence of supercooled liquid water in mixed-phase cloud (MPC) affects their cloud microphysical and radiative properties. The prevalence of MPCs in the mid- and high latitudes translates these effects to significant contributions to Earth’s radiative balance and hydrological cycle. The current study develops and assesses a radar-only, moment-based phase partition technique for the demarcation of supercooled liquid water volumes in arctic, MPC conditions. The study utilizes observations from the Ka band profiling radar, the collocated high spectral resolution lidar, and ambient temperature profiles from radio sounding deployments following a statistical analysis of 5.5 years of data (January 2014–May 2019) from the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement observatory at the North Slope of Alaska. The ice/liquid phase partition occurs via a per-pixel, neighborhood-dependent algorithm based on the premise that the partitioning can be deduced by examining the mean values of locally sampled probability distributions of radar-based observables and then compare those against the means of climatologically derived, per-phase probability distributions. Analyzed radar observables include linear depolarization ratio (LDR), spectral width, and vertical gradients of reflectivity factor and radial velocity corrected for vertical air motion. Results highlight that the optimal supercooled liquid water detection skill levels are realized for the radar variable combination of spectral width and reflectivity vertical gradient, suggesting that radar-based polarimetry, in the absence of full LDR spectra, is not as critical as Doppler capabilities. The cloud phase masking technique is proven particularly reliable when applied to cloud tops with an Equitable Threat Score (ETS) of 65%; the detection of embedded supercooled layers remains much more uncertain (ETS = 27%).

Ka-Band ARM Zenith Radar Corrections (KAZRCOR, KAZRCFRCOR) Value-Added Products

The KAZRCOR Value -added Product (VAP) performs several corrections to the ingested KAZR moments and also creates a significant detection mask for each radar mode. The VAP computes gaseous attenuation as a function of time and radial distance from the radar antenna, based on ambient meteorological observations, and corrects observed reflectivities for that effect. KAZRCOR also dealiases mean Doppler velocities to correct velocities whose magnitudes exceed the radar’s Nyquist velocity. Input KAZR data fields are passed through into the KAZRCOR output files, in their native time and range coordinates. Complementary corrected reflectivity and velocity fields are provided, along with a mask of significant detections and a number of data quality flags. This report covers the KAZRCOR VAP as applied to the original KAZR radars and the upgraded KAZR2 radars. Currently there are two separate code bases for the different radar versions, but once KAZR and KAZR2 data formats are harmonized, only a single code base will be required.

Self-Lubricating Bushing Testing for John Day Dam Ka plan Turbine Replacement

The goal of this testing program is to find suitable self-lubricated alternatives to replace the in use oil lubricated grooved-bronze bushing in Kaplan runner hubs that are currently being utilized at John Day Dam operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Scaled bushing testing utilizing a Pacific Northwest National Laboratory designed, fabricated, and operated Bushing Test Stand under the direction and funding from USACE determined that self-lubricated bushings tested appear capable of outperforming the current oil-lubricated bronze bushings. Performance tests are focused on durability which includes cyclic load bearing properties and articulations under various loading scenarios. This testing was performed at nominally 1/5 th scale. A scaling sensitivity analysis determined that scaled testing results apply to prototypic size. This report shows the direct comparison between the current baseline bronze bushing to self-lubricated bushings from various manufacturers. Bushing data like coefficient of friction and bushing material loss (associated with bushing wear) was determined. Self-lubricated bushings tested include products manufactured specifically for hydropower applications by the following companies: Trelleborg, Kamatics, Anonymous, and Tenneco/Deva.

A 300 kA Pulsed Power Supply for LBNF

The Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) will produce the world’s most intense neutrino beam. While the magnetic horns are expected to be replaced, the LBNF horn power supply is expected to last the lifetime of the project, 30 years. Three series connected magnetic horns will require a 300kA, 800µs pulses at a rate of 1.4 pps to focus the beam. Prototyping proved the component choices and designs. Test results for a single cell and the full 32 cell system will be presented.

Data Product: Ka ARM Zenith Radar (KAZR), in CfRadial format: precipitation mode, corrected

The KAZRCFRCOR Value Added Product (VAP) performs several corrections to the ingested KAZR data and also creates a significant detection mask for each radar mode. The VAP computes gaseous attenuation as a function of time and radial distance from the radar antenna, based on ambient relative humidity, and corrects observed reflectivities for that effect. KAZR reflectivities are also corrected in the antenna ‘nearfield’ range to compensate for the near-field antenna pattern and gain. KAZRCFRCOR also dealiases mean Doppler velocities, to correct velocities whose magnitudes exceed the radar’s Nyquist velocity. This dataset contains the 'kazrpr' (precipitation) mode output from this VAP.
