Amplitude/operator basis in chiral perturbation theory

We establish a systematic construction of the on-shell amplitude/operator basis for Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) in D = 4 spacetime dimensions and with an arbitrary number of flavors N f . For kinematic factors, we employ spinor-helicity variables to construct the soft blocks, which are local amplitudes satisfying the Adler’s zero condition, as well as to take into account the reduction in the kinematic basis due to the Gram determinant, which arises at O(p 10 ) when the number of multiplicity N in an amplitude becomes large: N > D. For flavor factors, we include group-theoretic relations at small N f , N f ≤ N, which decreases the flavor basis. The result is obtained by adapting the Young tensor method of constructing the operator basis for generic effective field theories to the case of non-linearly realized symmetries. Working in the massless quark limit, we present purely mesonic operators for both even- and odd-parity at O(p 6 ) and O(p 8 ) for N = 6 and arbitrary N f , and establish a direct correspondence between the amplitude basis and the operator basis. Furthermore, the redundancy due to the Gram determinant is studied at O(p 10 ) for N = 6, 8 and 10.

Sterile neutrinos and neutrinoless double beta decay in effective field theory

We investigate neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) in the presence of sterile neutrinos with Majorana mass terms. These gauge-singlet fields are allowed to interact with Standard-Model (SM) fields via renormalizable Yukawa couplings as well as higher-dimensional gauge-invariant operators up to dimension seven in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory extended with sterile neutrinos. At the GeV scale, we use Chiral effective field theory involving sterile neutrinos to connect the operators at the level of quarks and gluons to hadronic interactions involving pions and nucleons. This allows us to derive an expression for 0νββ rates for various isotopes in terms of phase-space factors, hadronic low-energy constants, nuclear matrix elements, the neutrino masses, and the Wilson coefficients of higher-dimensional operators. The required hadronic low-energy constants and nuclear matrix elements depend on the neutrino masses, for which we obtain interpolation formulae grounded in QCD and chiral perturbation theory that improve existing formulae that are only valid in a small regime of neutrino masses. The resulting framework can be used directly to assess the impact of 0νββ experiments on scenarios with light sterile neutrinos and should prove useful in global analyses of sterile-neutrino searches. We per- form several phenomenological studies of 0νββ in the presence of sterile neutrinos with and without higher-dimensional operators. We find that non-standard interactions involving sterile neutrinos have a dramatic impact on 0νββ phenomenology, and next-generation experiments can probe such interactions up to scales of $\mathcal O$ (100) TeV.

2, 12, 117, 1959, 45171, 1170086, …: a Hilbert series for the QCD chiral Lagrangian

We apply Hilbert series techniques to the enumeration of operators in the mesonic QCD chiral Lagrangian. Existing Hilbert series technologies for non-linear realizations are extended to incorporate the external fields. The action of charge conjugation is addressed by folding the $\mathfrak{su}(n)$ Dynkin diagrams, which we detail in an appendix that can be read separately as it has potential broader applications. New results include the enumeration of anomalous operators appearing in the chiral Lagrangian at order p 8 , as well as enumeration of CP -even, CP -odd, C -odd, and P -odd terms beginning from order p 6 . The method is extendable to very high orders, and we present results up to order p 16 . (The title sequence is the number of independent C -even and P -even operators in the mesonic QCD chiral Lagrangian with three light flavors of quarks, at chiral dimensions p 2 , p 4 , p 6 , …)

Radiative semileptonic $ \overline{B} $ decays

We consider the form factors for the radiative semileptonic decays $ \overline{B} $(v) → D(*)(v')ℓν¯ ℓγ in the kinematic region where the photon momentum, k, is small enough that heavy quark symmetry (HQS) can be applied without the radiated photon changing the heavy quark velocity (i.e., v(') ∙ k < m (b,c) ). We find that HQS is remarkably powerful, leaving only four new undetermined form factors at leading order in 1/m (b,c) . In addition, one of them is fixed in terms of the leading order Isgur-Wise function in the kinematic region, v(') ∙ k < Λ QCD .

What Hath Weinberg Wrought? Reflections on What Weinberg’s Papers on ‘Nuclear Forces from Chiral Lagrangians’ did and did not Accomplish

Here, I discuss selected legacies of Weinberg's application of chiral Lagrangians to nuclear physics: (1) the use of the chiral expansion to organize the interaction of pions and photons with a nucleus; (2) the much-debated question of why and how the potential derived from a chiral Lagrangian should be inserted in the Schrodinger equation; (3) the emergence of "pionless EFT" as a tool for diagnosing universal correlations that are present in quantum few-body systems of very different sizes, and, perhaps most important of all, (4) an epistemological shift in what is expected of a nuclear-physics calculation.

Full Modeling and parameter compression methods in configuration space for DESI 2024 and beyond

In the contemporary era of high-precision spectroscopic surveys, led by projects like DESI, there is an increasing demand for optimizing the extraction of cosmological information from clustering data. This work conducts a thorough comparison of various methodologies for modeling the full shape of the two-point statistics in configuration space. We investigate the performance of both direct fits (Full Modeling) and the parameter compression approaches (ShapeFit and Standard). We utilize the ABACUS-SUMMIT simulations, tailored to exceed DESI's precision requirements. Particularly, we fit the two-point statistics of three distinct tracers (LRG, ELG, and QSO), by employing a Gaussian Streaming Model in tandem with Convolution Lagrangian Perturbation Theory and Effective Field Theory. We explore methodological setup variations, including the range of scales, the set of galaxy bias parameters, the inclusion of the hexadecapole, as well as model extensions encompassing varying ns and allowing for w 0 w a CDM dark energy model. Throughout these varied explorations, while precision levels fluctuate and certain configurations exhibit tighter parameter constraints, our pipeline consistently recovers the parameter values of the mocks within 1σ in all cases for a 1-year DESI volume. Additionally, we compare the performance of configuration space analysis with its Fourier space counterpart using three models: PyBird, FOLPS and velocileptors, presented in companion papers. We find good agreement with the results from all these models.

Effective interactions of the open bosonic string via field theory

Abstract We describe a method to extract an effective Lagrangian description for open bosonic strings, at zero transcendentality. The method relies on a particular formulation of its scattering amplitudes derived from color-kinematics duality. More precisely, starting from a (DF) 2 + YM quantum field theory, we integrate out all the massive degrees of freedom to generate an expansion in the inverse string tensionα′. We explicitly compute the Lagrangian terms through$$ \mathcal{O} $$ O (α′ 4 ), and target the sector of operators proportional toF 4 to all orders inα′.

Global Aspects of Charged Particle Motion in Axially Symmetric Multipole Magnetic Fields

The motion of a single charged particle in the space outside of a compact region of steady currents is investigated. The charged particle is assumed to produce negligible electromagnetic radiation, so that its energy is conserved. The source of the magnetic field is represented as a point multipole. After a general description, attention is focused on magnetic fields with axial symmetry. Lagrangian dynamical theory is utilized to identify constants of the motion as well as the equations of motion themselves. The qualitative method of Stonner is used to examine charged particle motion in axisymmetric multipole fields of all orders. Although the equations of motion generally have no analytical solutions and must be integrated numerically to produce a specific orbit, a topological examination of dynamics is possible, and can be used, d la Stonner, to completely describe the global aspects of the motion of a single charged particle in a space with an axisymmetric multipole magnetic field.

Modelling nearest neighbour distributions of biased tracers using hybrid effective field theory

ABSTRACT We investigate the application of hybrid effective field theory (HEFT) – which combines a Lagrangian bias expansion with subsequent particle dynamics from N-body simulations – to the modelling of k-nearest neighbour cumulative distribution functions (kNN-CDFs) of biased tracers of the cosmological matter field. The kNN-CDFs are sensitive to all higher order connected N-point functions in the data, but are computationally cheap to compute. We develop the formalism to predict the kNN-CDFs of discrete tracers of a continuous field from the statistics of the continuous field itself. Using this formalism, we demonstrate how kNN-CDF statistics of a set of biased tracers, such as haloes or galaxies, of the cosmological matter field can be modelled given a set of low-redshift HEFT component fields and bias parameter values. These are the same ingredients needed to predict the two-point clustering. For a specific sample of haloes, we show that both the two-point clustering and the kNN-CDFs can be well-fit on quasi-linear scales (≳ 20h−1Mpc) by the second-order HEFT formalism with the same values of the bias parameters, implying that joint modelling of the two is possible. Finally, using a Fisher matrix analysis, we show that including kNN-CDF measurements over the range of allowed scales in the HEFT framework can improve the constraints on σ8 by roughly a factor of 3, compared to the case where only two-point measurements are considered. Combining the statistical power of kNN measurements with the modelling power of HEFT, therefore, represents an exciting prospect for extracting greater information from small-scale cosmological clustering.

Modeling iterative reconstruction and displacement field in the large scale structure

The next generation of galaxy surveys like the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument and Euclid will provide datasets orders of magnitude larger than anything available to date. Our ability to model nonlinear effects in late time matter perturbations will be a key to unlock the full potential of these datasets, and the area of initial condition reconstruction is attracting growing attention. Iterative reconstruction developed by Marcel Schmittfull et al. is a technique designed to reconstruct the displacement field from the observed galaxy distribution. The nonlinear displacement field and initial linear density field are highly correlated. Therefore, reconstructing the nonlinear displacement field enables us to extract the primordial cosmological information better than from the late time density field at the level of the two-point statistics. This paper will test to what extent the iterative reconstruction can recover the true displacement field and construct a perturbation theory model for the postreconstructed field. We model the iterative reconstruction process with Lagrangian perturbation theory (LPT) up to third order for dark matter in real space and compare it with N-body simulations. Here we find that the simulated iterative reconstruction does not converge to the nonlinear displacement field, and the discrepancy mainly appears in the shift term, i.e., the term correlated directly with the linear density field. On the contrary, our 3LPT model predicts that the iterative reconstruction should converge to the nonlinear displacement field. We discuss the sources of discrepancy, including numerical noise/artifacts on small scales, and present an ad hoc phenomenological model that improves the agreement.

A Lagrangian perturbation theory in the presence of massive neutrinos

We develop a Lagrangian Perturbation Theory (LPT) framework to study the clustering of cold dark matter (CDM) in cosmologies with massive neutrinos. We follow the trajectories of CDM particles with Lagrangian displacements fields up to third order in perturbation theory. Once the neutrinos become non-relativistic, their density fluctuations are modeled as being proportional to the CDM density fluctuations, with a scale-dependent proportionality factor. This yields a gravitational back-reaction that introduces additional scales to the linear growth function, which is accounted for in the higher order LPT kernels. Through non-linear mappings from Eulerian to Lagrangian frames, we ensure that our theory has a well behaved large scale behavior free of unwanted UV divergences, which are common when neutrino and CDM densities are not treated on an equal footing, and in resummation schemes that manifestly break Galilean invariance. We use our theory to construct correlation functions for both the underlying matter field, as well as for biased tracers using ConvolutionLPT. Redshift-space distortions effects are modeled using the Gaussian Streaming Model. When comparing our analytical results to simulated data from the Quijote 1 simulation suite, we find good accuracy down to r = 20 Mpc h -1 at redshift z = 0.5, for the real space and redshift space monopole particle correlation functions with no free parameters. The same accuracy is reached for the redshift space quadrupole if we additionally consider an effective field theory parameter that shifts the pairwise velocity dispersion. For modeling the correlation functions of tracers we adopt a simple Lagrangian biasing scheme with only density and curvature operators, which we find sufficient to reach down to r = 20 Mpc h -1 when comparing to simulated halos.

Wilsonian effective potentials and closed string field theory

We investigate Wilsonian effective field theory as a model for the construction of the tachyon potential and nonperturbative vacua in closed string field theory. In a number of cases we are able to find the effective potential exactly, and observe what appear to be universal features. We find that the effective field theory contains the same nonperturbative vacuum structure as the bare Lagrangian, though this information is encoded less efficiently as the distance scale of the effective field theory is increased. The implication is that closed string field theory plausibly contains information about the nonperturbative vacuum structure of string theory, in spite of its similarities to effective field theory. We also truncate the effective potential at a fixed power of the field and investigate how the global structure of the effective potential may be approximated via Padé resummation. Qualitative comparisons suggest that computation of the eighth to sixteenth order closed string vertex should be enough to obtain reliable results for the closed string field theory action evaluated on the tachyon field.

Chiral limit of 2d QCD revisited with lightcone conformal truncation

We study the chiral limit of 2d QCD with a single quark flavor at finite Nc using LCT. By modifying the LCT basis according to the quark mass in a manner motivated by ’t Hooft’s analysis, we are able to restore convergence for quark masses much smaller than the QCD strong coupling scale. For such small quark masses, the IR of the theory is expected to be well described by the Sine-Gordon model. We verify that LCT numerics are able to capture in detail the spectrum and correlation functions of the Sine-Gordon model. This opens up the possibility for studying deformations of various integrable CFTs using LCT by considering the chiral limit of QCD like theories.

Isospin-violating contributions to ϵ'/ϵ

The known isospin-breaking contributions to the K → ππ amplitudes are reanalyzed, taking into account our current understanding of the quark masses and the relevant non-perturbative inputs. We present a complete numerical reappraisal of the direct CP-violating ratio ϵ'/ϵ, where these corrections play a quite significant role. We obtain the Standard Model prediction Re (ϵ'/ϵ) = (14 ± 5) · 10 -4 , which is in very good agreement with the measured ratio. The uncertainty, which has been estimated conservatively, is dominated by our current ignorance about 1/N C -suppressed contributions to some relevant chiral-perturbation-theory low-energy constants.

Comparison of some approximations for isotropic turbulence.

Study of several related turbulence approximations with regard to dynamical properties and agreement of numerical predictions with laboratory and computer experiments. The approximations considered include the direct-interaction equations (Kraichnan, 1964), Herring's (1966) self-consistent-field theory, a generalization of Edwards' (1964) theory, the abridged Lagrangian-history, direct-interaction approximation (Kraichnan, 1966), the test-field model (Kraichnan, 1971), and an approximation, not previously described, in which one velocity field passively suffers convection by another. Most of the cited approximations are representable by stochastic model equations for the velocity amplitude. Explicit constructions are given for the stochastic models, in a form that can be approximated on a digital computer. These constructions are used to discuss the physical and mathematical differences between the model dynamics and actual Navier-Stokes dynamics.-

Modification of Lie's transform perturbation theory for charged particle motion in a magnetic field

It is pointed out that the conventional Lie transform perturbation theory for the guiding center motion of charged particles in a magnetic field needs to be modified for ordering inconsistency. There are two reasons. First, the ordering difference between the temporal variation of gyrophase and that of the other phase space coordinates needs to be taken into account. Second, it is also important to note that the parametric limit of the derivative of a function is not equivalent to the derivative of the limit function. When these facts are taken into account, the near identity transformation rule for one form related to the Lagrangian is modified. With the modified near identity transformation rule, the drift motion of charged particles can be described in the first order, instead of the second order and beyond through a tedious expansion process as in the conventional formulation. Here, this resolves the discrepancy between the direct and Lie transform treatments in the Lagrangian perturbation theory for charged particle motion in a magnetic field.

Simultaneous CTEQ-TEA extraction of PDFs and SMEFT parameters from jet and $t\bar{t}$ data

Recasting phenomenological Lagrangians in terms of SM effective field theory (SMEFT) provides a valuable means of connecting potential BSM physics at momenta well above the electroweak scale to experimental signatures at lower energies. In this work we jointly fit the Wilson coefficients of SMEFT operators as well as the PDFs in an extension of the CT18 global analysis framework, obtaining self-consistent constraints to possible BSM physics effects. Global fits are boosted with machine-learning techniques in the form of neural networks to ensure efficient scans of the full PDF+SMEFT parameter space. We focus on several operators relevant for top-quark pair and jet production at hadron colliders and obtain constraints on the Wilson coefficients with Lagrange Multiplier scans. We find mild correlations between the extracted Wilson coefficients, PDFs, and other QCD parameters, and see indications that these correlations may become more prominent in future analyses based on data of higher precision. This work serves as a new platform for joint analyses of SM and BSM physics based on the CTEQ-TEA framework.
