Critical Role of Framework Flexibility and Disorder in Driving High Ionic Conductivity in LiNbOCl 4

Understanding Li-ion transport is key for the rational design of superionic solid electrolytes with exceptional ionic conductivities. LiNbOCl 4 is reported to be one of the most highly conducting materials in the recently realized new class of soft oxyhalide solid electrolytes, exhibiting an ionic conductivity of ~11 mS·cm -1 . Here, we apply X-ray/neutron diffraction and pair distribution function analysis - coupled with density functional theory/ab-initio molecular dynamics - to determine a structural model that provides a rationale for the high conductivity that we observe experimentally in this nanocrystalline solid. We show that it arises from unusually high framework flexibility at room temperature. This owes to isolated 1-D [NbOCl 4 ] - anionic chains which exhibit energetically favorable orientational disorder that is - in turn - correlated to multiple, disordered and equi-energetic Li + sites in the lattice. As the Li-ions sample the 3-D energy landscape with a fast predicted diffusion coefficient of 5.1 x 10 -7 cm 2 /s at room temperature (σ i calc = 17.4 mS·cm -1 ), the inorganic polymer chains can reorient or vice versa. The activation energy barrier for Li migration through the frustrated energy landscape is especially reduced by the elastic nature of the NbO 2 Cl 4 octahedra evident from very widely dispersed Cl-Nb-Cl bond angles in AIMD snapshots at 300 K. The phonon spectra are predominantly influenced by Cl vibrations in the low energy range, and there is strong overlap between the framework (Cl, Nb) and Li partial pDOS in the region between 1.2 - 4.0 THz. The framework flexibility is also reflected in a relatively low bulk modulus of 22 GPa. In conclusion, our findings pave the way for investigation of future “flex-ion” inorganic solids and open up a new direction for the design of high conductivity, soft solid electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries.

Correction to “Stacking Faults Assist Lithium-Ion Conduction in a Halide-Based Superionic Conductor”

A typographical error needs to be corrected in the Results section, subsection “2.5. Evaluation of Li + Ion Conduction Properties”, fourth paragraph, where the activation energy barriers derived from PFG-NMR were swapped for components 1 and 2, for both BM-LYC and SS-LYC. The same error should also corrected in the second paragraph of the Discussion section.

Tunable Lithium-Ion Transport in Mixed-Halide Argyrodites Li 6–x PS 5–x ClBr x : An Unusual Compositional Space

Argyrodites, with fast lithium-ion conduction, are promising for applications in rechargeable solid-state lithium-ion batteries. In this article, we report a new compositional space of argyrodite superionic conductors, Li 6– x PS 5– x ClBr x [0 ≤ x ≤ 0.8], with a remarkably high ionic conductivity of 24 mS/cm at 25 °C for Li 5.3 PS 4.3 ClBr 0.7 . In addition, the extremely low lithium migration barrier of 0.155 eV makes Li 5.3 PS 4.3 ClBr 0.7 highly promising for low-temperature operation. Average and local structure analyses reveal that bromination ( x > 0) leads to (i) retention of the parent Li 6 PS 5 Cl structure for a wide range of x in Li 6– x PS 5– x ClBr x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.7), (ii) co-occupancy of Cl – , Br – , and S 2– at 4a/4d sites, and (iii) gradually increased Li + -ion dynamics, eventually yielding a “liquid-like” Li-sublattice with a flattened energy landscape when x approaches 0.7. In addition, the diversity of anion species and Li-deficiency in halogen-rich Li 6– x PS 5– x ClBr x induce hypercoordination and coordination entropy for the Li-sublattice, also leading to enhanced Li + -ion transport in Li 6– x PS 5– x ClBr x . This study demonstrates that mixed-anion framework can help stabilize highly conductive structures in a compositional space otherwise unstable with lower anion diversity.

Dynamic Monkey Bar Mechanism of Superionic Li‐ion Transport in LiTaCl 6

Abstract The LiTaCl 6 solid electrolyte has the lowest activation energy of ionic conduction at ambient conditions (0.165 eV), with a record high ionic conductivity for a ternary compound (11 mS cm −1 ). However, the mechanism has been unclear. We train machine‐learning force fields (MLFF) on ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) data on‐the‐fly and perform MLFF MD simulations of AIMD quality up to the nanosecond scale at the experimental temperatures, which allows us to predict accurate activation energy for Li‐ion diffusion (at 0.164 eV). Detailed analyses of trajectories and vibrational density of states show that the large‐amplitude vibrations of Cl − ions in TaCl 6 − enable the fast Li‐ion transport by allowing dynamic breaking and reforming of Li−Cl bonds across the space in between the TaCl 6 − octahedra. We term this process the dynamic‐monkey‐bar mechanism of superionic Li + transport which could aid the development of new solid electrolytes for all‐solid‐state lithium batteries.

A new halospinel superionic conductor for high-voltage all solid state lithium batteries

We report a new Li-superionic chloride, Li 2 Sc 2/3 Cl 4 , that crystallizes in a disordered spinel structure, and exhibits an ionic conductivity of 1.5 mS cm –1 with a low activation energy barrier for Li + ion diffusion of 0.34 eV. Here, this material is the first spinel-type superionic halide. Structural elucidation via powder neutron diffraction reveals a significantly disordered Li + -ion distribution over available tetrahedral and octahedral sites within the lattice, forming an infinitely 3D connected Li + ion diffusion pathway comprised of face-sharing octahedra and tetrahedra. Due to the high oxidative stability of Li 2 Sc 2/3 Cl 4 , all solid state lithium batteries employing Li 2 Sc 2/3 Cl 4 and high voltage cathodes (LiCoO 2 , LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 or high-Ni LiNi 0.85 Mn 0.1 Co 0.05 O 2 ) – without any coating – exhibit excellent electrochemical performance up to 4.6 V in terms of capacity retention and cycle life.

Enhancing Superionic Conductivity in Cluster-Based Sodium-Rich Antiperovskites

Sodium (Na) superionic conductors are the key to developing next-generation solid-state batteries with safety and low cost. However, most of the known Na-conductors exhibit limited ionic conductivities at room temperature (RT), hindering their practical applications. To meet the challenge, a series of Li- and Na-rich antiperovskite superionic conductors based on cluster ions (e.g. BH4- and BCl4-) have been theoretically developed [e.g. Fang et al. PNAS 114, 11046, 2017; ACS App. Mat. Inter. 11, 963, 2018]. These materials exhibit superior properties as solid electrolytes with greatly enhanced ionic conductivities at RT. One cluster-based solid electrolyte of such, Na3O(BH)4, has been successfully synthesized for the first time most recently and its measured RT ionic conductivity is well above 10-3 S/cm which is four orders of magnitude higher than that of its halogen counterparts Na3OX (X = Cl, Br, I) [Sun et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 141, 5640, 2019]. In this work, we aim to further enhance the ionic conductivity of the Na-superionic conductor by using chemical mixing according to the size effect. The study further shows the advantage of utilizing cluster ions as building blocks, introducing additional degrees of freedom into tuning the properties of superionic conductors.

Mechanism of Contrasting Ionic Conductivities in Li 2 ZrCl 6 via I and Br Substitution

Understanding the complex structural and chemical factors that influence ionic conduction mechanisms is paramount for developing advanced inorganic superionic conductors in all‐solid‐state batteries, particularly halide solid electrolytes with excellent electrochemical oxidative stability and mechanical sinterability. Herein, contrasting ionic conduction behaviors in I − and Br − substituted Li 2 ZrCl 6 are revealed by combining experimental structural analyses and theoretical calculations. The inter‐slab distance along the c ‐axis, which varies with the anion substitution and M2‐M3 site disorder, is a key factor for opening the ab ‐plane conduction and facilitating the overall Li + conduction. Increased M3 site occupancy generally leads to contracted inter‐slab distance. The substantial increase in Li + conductivity upon I substitution (from 0.40 to 0.91 mS cm −1 ) originates from a sufficiently expanded lattice volume owing to its large ionic radii (I − = 2.20 Å), particularly inter‐slab distance that facilitates the ab intra‐plane Li + conduction, which also benefits from decreased M2‐M3 disorder. In contrast, Br (Br − = 1.96 Å) substitution results in insufficiently expanded Li + channels, which, exacerbated by increased M2‐M3 disorder, leads to degradation in Li + conductivity. Implementing I − substituted Li 2 ZrCl 6 resulted in superior electrochemical performance in LiCoO 2 ||Li‐In cells compared to those with an unsubstituted catholyte.

Review—Polymer/Ceramic Interface Barriers: The Fundamental Challenge for Advancing Composite Solid Electrolytes for Li-Ion Batteries

Composite-solid electrolytes, in which ion-conducting polymers are combined with superionic ceramics, could revolutionize electrochemical-energy-storage devices enabling higher energy density, providing greater stability during operation and enhanced safety. However, the interfacial resistance between the ceramic and polymer phases strongly suppresses the ionic conductivity and presents the main obstacle to the use of these materials. Here, we emphasize the need for a distinct focus on reducing energy barriers to interfacial ion transport and improving the cation transference number. To achieve this goal, it is essential to develop a fundamental understanding of the parameters that influence the interfacial barriers to ion transport in composite electrolytes, and to understand the effect of the type of ceramic ("active" and "inert") and its content on ion-transport phenomena. We suggest that adapting the polymer chemistry, mainly directed on polymerized ionic liquids, (PolyILs), and combined with functionalization of the surface of ceramic nanoparticles is a promising route for overcoming the high-energy-barrier challenge. Owing to high content of ion-conducting ceramics and high t+ of PolyILs, the fractional contribution of the migrating cationic species to the total ionic conductivity of polymer-in-ceramic electrolytes via an interfacial percolation path, will be close to unity, thus eliminating complications that might arise from emerging concentration gradients during the operation of solid-state batteries.

Elucidating the Determinants of Alkali Ionic Conductivity in Oxide and Sulfide Frameworks

The aim of this project is to elucidate the structural and chemical factors determining alkali conductivity in oxide and sulfide frameworks using large scale first principles calculations and topological analysis. The facile conduction of alkali ions in oxide and sulfide host structures is of critical importance in energy storage. Today, the dominant form of energy storage in portable electronics is the rechargeable alkali-ion battery, a device that functions entirely on the basis of the reversible transport of alkali ions. The Li+/Na+ conductivity of a cathode has a direct influence on the rate capability of a Li/Na-ion battery, i.e., the speed at which it can be charged and discharged. Alkali conductivity is arguably of even greater importance in the solid electrolytes currently being investigated for high safety, high energy all-solid-state batteries. The research performed in this project has provided critical new insights into the diffusion mechanisms in state-of-the-art alkali superionic conductors such as Li 7 P 3 S 11 , Li 3 OCl 1-x Br x anti-perovskite, argyrodite Li 6 PS 5 Cl. Two potential novel lithium superionic conductors (Li 3 Y(PS 4 ) 2 and Li 5 PS 4 Cl 2 ) with improved electrochemical stabilities were predicted. We have also conducted in-depth studies into alkali conduction in several important classes of electrodes, including the layered P2 NaMO 2 oxides and the highly promising novel disordered rock salt Li 3+x V 2 O 5 anode for high-rate applications. This project has resulted in more than 10 peer-reviewed articles in highly regarded journals as well as a new open-source software framework (pymatgen-analysis-diffusion) that is widely used by the materials research community for the study of diffusion in materials.

Theoretical Design of Lithium Chloride Superionic Conductors for All-Solid-State High-Voltage Lithium-Ion Batteries

The development of solid electrolytes (SEs) is a promising pathway to improve the energy density and safety of conventional Li ion batteries. Several lithium chloride SEs, Li 3 MCl 6 (M = Y, Er, In, and Sc), have gained popularity due to their high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical window, and good chemical stability. This study systematically investigated 17 Li 3 MCl 6 SEs to identify novel and promising lithium chloride SEs. Calculation results revealed that 12 Li 3 MCl 6 (M = Bi, Dy, Er, Ho, In, Lu, Sc, Sm, Tb, TI, Tm, and Y) were stable phase with a wide electrochemical stability window and excellent chemical stability against cathode materials and moisture. Li-ion transport properties were examined using bond valence site energy (BVSE) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) calculation. Li 3 MCl 6 showed the lower migration energy barrier in monoclinic structures, while orthorhombic and trigonal structures exhibited higher energy barriers due to the sluggish diffusion along the two-dimensional path based on the BVSE model. AIMD results confirmed the slower ion migration along the 2D path, exhibiting lower ionic diffusivity and higher activation energy in orthorhombic and trigonal structures. For the further increase of ionic conductivity in monoclinic structures, Li-ion vacancy was formed by the substitution of M 3+ with Zr 4+ . Zr-substituted phase (Li 2.5 M 0.5 Zr 0.5 Cl 6 , M = In, Sc) exhibited up to a fourfold increase in ionic conductivity. This finding suggested that the optimization of Li vacancy in the Li 3 MCl 6 SEs could lead to superionic Li 3 MCl 6 SEs.

Unraveling the pathway towards superionic transport in polymer electrolytes

Ionic transport in polymers is critical for Li-ion batteries, fuel cells, flow batteries and many other energy storage and conversion technologies. A significant enhancement of ion conductivity in polymers may be achieved through an increase in the polarity of side chains and their self-organization into specific morphologies, which can potentially act as percolated ionic structures. However, higher polarity increases attractive interactions within a polymer matrix and slows down its segmental dynamics, which conversely hinders ionic transport. To overcome this tradeoff, we designed the functionalization of a Li salt-doped polymer matrix by tailored amounts of zwitterionic (ZI) groups. Our results suggest the emergence of a self-assembled percolation conductivity regime above a specific ZI concentration, in which ion hopping decouples from segmental dynamics by up to ten orders of magnitude. Consequently, in the highly concentrated ZI regime, our polymeric materials exhibit in their glassy state energy barriers for ion hopping similar to, or even smaller than, those reported for superionic ceramics. Our study also reveals that ion dynamics in the poly(zwitterion) with all monomers carrying ZI groups is significantly faster than that of a monomeric ZI compound, although the latter has much faster structural relaxation. Furthermore, this result highlights the crucial role played by the local morphology on the ion transport of polymer electrolytes and opens a new pathway for the design of superionic polymers, significantly expanding the current limited portfolio of solid-state electrolytes for energy applications.

Li 21 Ge 8 P 3 S 34 : New Lithium Superionic Conductor with Unprecedented Structural Type

Abstract Lithium superionic conductors are pivotal for enabling all‐solid‐state batteries, which aim to replace liquid electrolytes and enhance safety. Herein, we report the discovery of an unprecedented lithium superionic conductor, Li 21 Ge 8 P 3 S 34 , featuring a novel structural type and a new composition in the Li–Ge–P–S system. This material exhibits high lithium ionic conductivity of approximately 1.0 mS cm −1 at 303 K with a low activation energy of 0.20(1) eV. It's unique crystal structure was elucidated using three‐dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED) and further refined through combined powder X‐ray and neutron diffraction analyses. The structure consists of alternating two‐dimensional slabs: one of corner‐sharing GeS 4 tetrahedra and the other of isolated PS 4 tetrahedra, enabling efficient lithium‐ion transport through a tetrahedrally interconnected network of 1D, 2D, and 3D diffusion pathways. This distinctive structural motif provides a novel design strategy for next‐generation solid electrolytes, broadening the structural landscape of lithium superionic conductors. With further advancements in compositional tuning and interfacial engineering, Li 21 Ge 8 P 3 S 34 could contribute to the development of high‐performance all‐solid‐state batteries.

Simulations with machine learning potentials identify the ion conduction mechanism mediating non-Arrhenius behavior in LGPS

Abstract Li 10 Ge(PS 6 ) 2 (LGPS) is a highly concentrated solid electrolyte, in which Coulombic repulsion between neighboring cations is hypothesized as the underlying reason for concerted ion hopping, a mechanism common among superionic conductors such as Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) and Li 1.3 Al 0.3 Ti 1.7 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP). While first principles simulations using molecular dynamics (MD) provide insight into the Li + transport mechanism, historically, there has been a gap in the temperature ranges studied in simulations and experiments. Here, we used a neural network potential trained on density functional theory (DFT) simulations, to run up to 40-nanosecond long MD simulations at DFT-like accuracy to characterize the ion conduction mechanisms across a range of temperatures that includes previous simulations and experimental studies. We have confirmed a Li + sublattice phase transition in LGPS around 400 K, below which the ab -plane diffusivity D a b ∗ is drastically reduced. Concomitant with the sublattice phase transition near 400 K, there is less cation-cation (cross) correlation, as characterized by Haven ratios closer to 1, and the vibrations in the system are more harmonic at lower temperature. Intuitively, at high temperature, the collection of vibrational modes may be sufficient to drive concerted ion hops. However, near room temperature, the vibrational modes available may be insufficient to overcome electrostatic repulsion, thus resulting in less correlated ion motion and comparatively slower ion conduction. Such phenomena of a sublattice phase transition, below which concerted hopping plays a less significant role, may be extended to other highly concentrated solid electrolytes such as LLZO and LATP.
