User's manual for LINEAR, a FORTRAN program to derive linear aircraft models

This report documents a FORTRAN program that provides a powerful and flexible tool for the linearization of aircraft models. The program LINEAR numerically determines a linear system model using nonlinear equations of motion and a user-supplied nonlinear aerodynamic model. The system model determined by LINEAR consists of matrices for both state and observation equations. The program has been designed to allow easy selection and definition of the state, control, and observation variables to be used in a particular model.

Linear solvers for power grid optimization problems: A review of GPU-accelerated linear solvers

The linear equations that arise in interior methods for constrained optimization are sparse symmetric indefinite, and they become extremely ill-conditioned as the interior method converges. These linear systems present a challenge for existing solver frameworks based on sparse LU or LDL T decompositions. Here, we benchmark five well known direct linear solver packages on CPU- and GPU-based hardware, using matrices extracted from power grid optimization problems. The achieved solution accuracy varies greatly among the packages. None of the tested packages delivers significant GPU acceleration for our test cases. For completeness of the comparison we include results for MA57, which is one of the most efficient and reliable CPU solvers for this class of problem.

Investigations of the linear and non-linear flow harmonics using the a multi-phase transport model

The multi-phase transport model (AMPT) is used to study the effects of the parton-scattering cross-sections (σ pp ) and hadronic re-scattering on the linear contributions to the flow harmonic v 4 , the non-linear response coefficients, and the correlations between different order flow symmetry planes in Au + Au collisions at 200 GeV. The model results, which agree with current experimental measurements, indicate that the higher-order flow harmonics are sensitive to the σ pp variations. However, the non-linear response coefficients and the correlations between different order flow symmetry planes are σ pp independent. Furthermore, these results suggest that further detailed experimental measurements which span a broad range of collision systems and beam energies could serve as an additional constraint for the theoretical models' calculations.

Magnetic potential based formulation for linear and non-linear 3D RF sheath simulation

Abstract This paper reports a new numerical scheme to simulate the radio-frequency (RF) induced RF sheath, which is suitable for a large 3D simulation. In the RF sheath boundary model, the tangential component of the electric field ( E t ) is given by the gradient of a scalar electric field potential. We introduce two additional scalar potentials for the tangential components of the magnetic field, which effectively impose the normal electric displacement ( D n ) on the plasma sheath boundary condition via in-homogeneous Neumann boundary condition and constrain the tangential electric field on the surface as curl-free ( ∇ × E t = 0 ). In our approach, the non-linear sheath impedance is formulated as a natural extension of the large thickness (or asymptotic) sheath limit ( D n = 0 ), allowing for handling both asymptotic and non-linear regimes seamlessly. The new scheme is implemented using the Petra-M finite element method analysis framework and is verified with simulations in the literature. The significance of non-linearity is discussed in various plasma conditions. An application of this scheme to asymptotic RF sheath simulation on the WEST ICRF antenna side limiters is also discussed.

Transformation matrices between non-linear and linear differential equations

In the linearization of systems of non-linear differential equations, those systems which can be exactly transformed into the second order linear differential equation Y"-AY'-BY=0 where Y, Y', and Y" are n x 1 vectors and A and B are constant n x n matrices of real numbers were considered. The 2n x 2n matrix was used to transform the above matrix equation into the first order matrix equation X' = MX. Specially the matrix M and the conditions which will diagonalize or triangularize M were studied. Transformation matrices P and P sub -1 were used to accomplish this diagonalization or triangularization to return to the solution of the second order matrix differential equation system from the first order system.

On the adequacy of meridional resolution of linear and quasi-linear barotropic models

The minimum meridional resolution needed for an adequate numerical simulation of the linear and 'quasi-linear' barotropic vorticity dynamics in the vicinity of a critical latitude (CL) is determined by using a semispectral nondivergent barotropic model on a sphere. The behavior of the analytic as well as the meridionally finite differenced form of the refractive index in the vicinity of a CL is discussed. An estimation of an upper bound on the latitudinal gridsize to be used in linear calculations is given, and constraint on the latitudinal grid size are considered. The dynamical model utilized is briefly described.

A linear quadratic regulator approach to the stabilization of uncertain linear systems

This paper presents a linear quadratic regulator approach to the stabilization of uncertain linear systems. The uncertain systems under consideration are described by state equations with the presence of time-varying unknown-but-bounded uncertainty matrices. The method is based on linear quadratic regulator (LQR) theory and Liapunov stability theory. The robust stabilizing control law for a given uncertain system can be easily constructed from the symmetric positive-definite solution of the associated augmented Riccati equation. The proposed approach can be applied to matched and/or mismatched systems with uncertainty matrices in which only their matrix norms are bounded by some prescribed values and/or their entries are bounded by some prescribed constraint sets. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the results.

Linear prediction filters for linear and nonlinear modeled geomagnetic activity

It is shown that the Faraday loop analog model of geomagnetic activity exhibits both the directly driven and loading-unloading magnetospheric responses to solar wind input. It is further shown that the directly driven component is a linear response to loading while the loading-unloading response is nonlinear. Linear prediction filters which relate model input to output are discussed. By either allowing or suppressing the loading-unloading model response filters that relate to nonlinear or linear dynamics, respectively, have been computed. Filters that described the directly driven response are finite ranged; they asymptote to zero with increasing lag on a time scale that is fixed by the dissipation rate of the model. Filters that describe the nonlinear total response are infinite ranged; they asymptote with increasing lag to large amplitude periodic oscillations. Some implications of these infinite ranged filters are discussed.

Linear and non-linear failure analysis of composite laminates with transverse shear

A finite element computational procedure has been developed to find linear and nonlinear (von Karman) first-ply failure loads of composite laminates subjected to in-plane and transverse loads. The FEM is based on first-order shear deformation theory and several phenomenological failure criteria. It is found that the failure loads predicted by various failure criteria differ from one another by a maximum of 35 percent in the case of linear loads and 50 percent in the case of nonlinear loads; the failure locations differ from each other in a random way. It is demonstrated that the difference between the linear and nonlinear failure loads is large in the case of transversely loaded simply supported laminates and thin plates. The difference is found to be quite small in the case of in-plane (tensile) loading and thick laminates.

Efficient yet accurate solution of the linear transport equation in the presence of internal sources - The exponential-linear-in-depth approximation

The present solutions to the linear transport equation pertain to monoenergetic particles' interaction with a multiple scattering/absorbing layered medium with a general anisotropic internal source term. Attention is given to a novel exponential-linear approximation to the internal source, as a function of scattering depth, which furnishes an at-once efficient and accurate solution to the linear transport equation through its reduction of the spatial mesh size. The great superiority of the proposed method is demonstrated by the numerical results obtained in the illustrative cases of (1) an embedded thermal source and (2) a rapidly varying beam pseudosource.

Trellises and Trellis-Based Decoding Algorithms for Linear Block Codes: An Iterative Decoding Algorithm for Linear Block Codes Based on a Low-Weight Trellis Search - Part 3

For long linear block codes, maximum likelihood decoding based on full code trellises would be very hard to implement if not impossible. In this case, we may wish to trade error performance for the reduction in decoding complexity. Sub-optimum soft-decision decoding of a linear block code based on a low-weight sub-trellis can be devised to provide an effective trade-off between error performance and decoding complexity. This chapter presents such a suboptimal decoding algorithm for linear block codes. This decoding algorithm is iterative in nature and based on an optimality test. It has the following important features: (1) a simple method to generate a sequence of candidate code-words, one at a time, for test; (2) a sufficient condition for testing a candidate code-word for optimality; and (3) a low-weight sub-trellis search for finding the most likely (ML) code-word.

Anisotropic positive linear and sub-linear magnetoresistivity in the cubic type-II Dirac metal Pd 3 In 7

We report a transport study on Pd 3 In 7 which displays multiple Dirac type-II nodes in its electronic dispersion. Pd 3 In 7 is characterized by low residual resistivities and high mobilities, which are consistent with Dirac-like quasiparticles. For an applied magnetic field (μ 0 H) having a non-zero component along the electrical current, we find a large, positive, and linear in μ 0 H longitudinal magnetoresistivity (LMR). The sign of the LMR and its linear dependence deviate from the behavior reported for the chiral-anomaly-driven LMR in Weyl semimetals. Interestingly, such anomalous LMR is consistent with predictions for the role of the anomaly in type-II Weyl semimetals. In contrast, the transverse or conventional magnetoresistivity (CMR for electric fields E⊥μ 0 H) is large and positive, increasing by 10 3 –10 4 % as a function of μ 0 H while following an anomalous, angle-dependent power law ρ xx α (μ 0 H) n with n(θ) ≤ 1. The order of magnitude of the CMR, and its anomalous power-law, is explained in terms of uncompensated electron and hole-like Fermi surfaces characterized by anisotropic carrier scattering likely due to the lack of Lorentz invariance.

A thermodynamics-based damage model for the non-linear mechanical behavior of SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites in irradiation and thermal environments

A damage model is developed and validated with experimental data for the non-linear mechanical behavior of SiC/SiC composite materials in nuclear applications. Cyclic thermal and mechanical loading associated with neutron irradiation effects of these composites leads to wide-spread and progressive micro-cracking that leads to loss of thermal conductivity and further enhancement of thermo-mechanical damage. A physics-based model of wide-spread micro-cracking is developed within the thermodynamic framework of continuum damage mechanics. Evolution equations for damage parameters that describe the growth of continuum damage are developed, where the material variables are obtained from experiments. The model novelty is in coupling mechanical, thermal, and irradiation damage through a consistent thermodynamic framework, including loss of thermal conductivity due to the evolution of mechanically induced micro-cracks. A number of thermo-mechanical experiments were conducted to confirm model assumptions. The model is shown to be validated with out-of-pile experiments, and then implemented using commercial finite element code COMSOL to the fuel cladding problem with normal and high radiation dose cases.

Linear and Non-linear Optical Characterization of Glass and Sapphire for Optical Instrumentation of Advanced Fission Reactors

The linear and nonlinear optical properties of glass and sapphire are investigated to determine the material’s suitability to support optical instrumentation for advanced fission reactors. A post-irradiation examination experiment consisting of a Z-scan, measuring nonlinear optical absorption and refraction, and a spectrometer, measuring linear optical absorption was developed and used. Radiation-induced negative nonlinear optical absorption was observed for the first time in fused silica, sapphire, and borosilicate glass under both types of thermal annealing conditions and the respective effects of thermal annealing are reported.

Topology of the $O(3)$ non-linear sigma model under the gradient flow

The $O(3)$ non-linear sigma model (NLSM) is a prototypical field theory for QCD and ferromagnetism, featuring topological qualities. Though the topological susceptibility should vanish in physical theories, lattice simulations of the NLSM find that the topological susceptibility diverges in the continuum limit. We introduce a $\theta$-term and analyze the topological charge as a function of $\theta$ under the gradient flow. Our results show that divergence persists in the presence of the flow, even at non-zero $\theta$.

The Linear Collider Facility (LCF) at CERN

In this paper we outline a proposal for a Linear Collider Facility as the next flagship project for CERN. It offers the opportunity for a timely, cost-effective and staged construction of a new collider that will be able to comprehensively map the Higgs boson's properties, including the Higgs field potential, thanks to a large span in centre-of-mass energies and polarised beams. A comprehensive programme to study the Higgs boson and its closest relatives with high precision requires data at centre-of-mass energies from the Z pole to at least 1 TeV. It should include measurements of the Higgs boson in both major production mechanisms, ee -> ZH and ee -> vvH, precision measurements of gauge boson interactions as well as of the W boson, Higgs boson and top-quark masses, measurement of the top-quark Yukawa coupling through ee ->ttH, measurement of the Higgs boson self-coupling through HH production, and precision measurements of the electroweak couplings of the top quark. In addition, ee collisions offer discovery potential for new particles complementary to HL-LHC.
