Process intensification for generating and decomposing formic acid, a liquid hydrogen carrier

We preview two processes that facilitate using formic acid (HCOOH) as a liquid hydrogen carrier to store renewably-generated electrical energy and then release it to generate electrical power cleanly for backup or emergency applications. First, we show that simultaneously oxidizing an organic solute (typically a waste stream) can assist the electrochemical synthesis of formic acid by lowering the cell potential. The electrolyser comprises a hybrid 3-chamber PEM stack that reduces CO₂ via a gas-diffusion cathode boosted by the oxidation of aqueous methanol. However, the extent of the boosting needs to be optimized across the whole operation of the cell. Next, we present results from an intensified reactor for decomposing formic acid back into H₂ and CO₂ at elevated pressure so that the H₂ can be used in a fuel cell. The reactor combines three operations: Vaporization of the formic acid, its decomposition, and separation of the product stream. Their close coupling affords energy savings and a compact design that could be mounted on a mobile skid. We briefly discuss the electrode catalyst that facilitates the first process and two thermally activated catalysts (Ir supported on covalent triazine framework and Pd supported on carbon) that enable the second process.

Modeling of Liquid Hydrogen Tank Cooled with Para-Orthohydrogen Conversion

With the accelerating development of liquid-hydrogen storage facilities, the problem of boil-off hydrogen losses becomes very important. A promising method to reduce these losses is to utilize the endothermic para-orthohydrogen conversion of vented hydrogen, which can effectively decrease heat loads on a hydrogen tank. To model such a process, a hybrid computational model has been developed, based on the application of computational fluid dynamics for an ullage space, where knowledge of thermal stratification is important, and reduced-order models for other system elements. The simulation results for a spheroidal tank in selected conditions indicated a 10–25% reduction of boil-off losses due to cooling produced by vented hydrogen undergoing para-ortho-conversion.

Electronic energy gap closure and metal-insulator transition in dense liquid hydrogen

Here, using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations, we investigate the insulator-metal transition observed in liquid hydrogen at high pressure. Below the critical temperature of the transition from the molecular to the atomic liquid, the fundamental electronic gap closure occurs abruptly, with a small discontinuity reflecting the weak first-order transition in the thermodynamic equation of state. Above the critical temperature, molecular dissociation sets in while the gap is still open. When the gap closes, the decay of the off-diagonal reduced density matrix shows that the liquid enters a gapless, but localized, phase: there is a crossover between the insulating and the metallic liquids. Compared to different density functional theory (DFT) functionals, our QMC calculations provide larger values for the fundamental gap and the electronic density of states close to the band edges, indicating that optical properties from DFT potentially benefit from error cancellations.

Liquid hydrogen storage system for heavy duty trucks: Configuration, performance, cost, and safety

In this work, we investigate the potential of liquid hydrogen storage (LH 2 ) on-board Class-8 heavy duty trucks to resolve many of the range, weight, volume, refueling time and cost issues associated with 350 or 700-bar compressed H 2 storage in Type-3 or Type-4 composite tanks. We present and discuss conceptual storage system configurations capable of supplying H 2 to fuel cells at 5-bar with or without on-board LH 2 pumps. Structural aspects of storing LH 2 in double walled, vacuum insulated, and low-pressure Type-1 tanks are investigated. Structural materials and insulation methods are discussed for service at cryogenic temperatures and mitigation of heat leak to prevent LH 2 boiloff. Failure modes of the liner and shell are identified and analyzed using the regulatory codes and detailed finite element (FE) methods. The conceptual systems are subjected to a Failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) and a safety, codes, and standards (SCS) review to rank failures and identify safety gaps. The results indicate that the conceptual systems can reach 19.6% usable gravimetric capacity, 40.9 g-H 2 /L usable volumetric capacity and $174-183/kg-H 2 cost (2016 USD) when manufactured 100,000 systems annually.

Opportunities and data requirements for data-driven prognostics and health management in liquid hydrogen storage systems

During the past decade, Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) has become an important set of tools in various areas of industry and academic reliability engineering. PHM consists of a variety of mathematical and computational methods used to support data-driven decision-making to increase the safety, availability, and reliability of complex engineering systems. In particular, PHM can provide crucial insight into reliability and safety design improvements for developing technologies where historical performance and failure data are limited. This is the case of hydrogen fueling and storage technologies. This work presents a high-level approach for designing data-driven PHM applications for bulk liquid hydrogen (LH 2 ) storage systems for hydrogen fueling stations. This paper addresses core aspects of the design, development, and implementation of data-driven PHM applications that can improve the reliability assessment of hydrogen components. The analysis focuses on the relationship between data availability and diagnostic/prognostic capabilities; potential challenges; and integration schemes for current risk mitigation measures. We identify potential condition-monitoring data sources for key components in an LH 2 storage system, including storage tanks, piping, and pumps. Further, we determine that the short-term goals for the implementation of data-driven models in PHM frameworks in hydrogen systems should focus on developing adequate data collection and analysis strategies, as well as exploring the effect on reliability, safety, and regulations for hydrogen systems.

Life Cycle Assessment of Formic Acid as a Liquid Hydrogen Carrier

This work presents a life cycle analysis of the transport and processing for formic acid into hydrogen. The system boundary begins at the formic acid plant gate and ends with hydrogen end use. The functional unit is 1 kg of hydrogen delivered to end use, 1 kWh for electricity generation, and 1 vehicle mile traveled (VMT). Renewable electricity reduced GWP by 80-90% relative to U.S. average grid.
