Boundary formulations for sensitivity analysis without matrix derivatives

A new hybrid approach to continuum structural shape sensitivity analysis employing boundary element analysis (BEA) is presented. The approach uses iterative reanalysis to obviate the need to factor perturbed matrices in the determination of surface displacement and traction sensitivities via a univariate perturbation/finite difference (UPFD) step. The UPFD approach makes it possible to immediately reuse existing subroutines for computation of BEA matrix coefficients in the design sensitivity analysis process. The reanalysis technique computes economical response of univariately perturbed models without factoring perturbed matrices. The approach provides substantial computational economy without the burden of a large-scale reprogramming effort.

Microstructure of the IMF turbulences at 2.5 AU

A detailed analysis of small period (15-900 sec) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulences of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) has been made using Pioneer-11 high time resolution data (0.75 sec) inside a Corotating Interaction Region (CIR) at a heliocentric distance of 2.5 AU in 1973. The methods used are the hodogram analysis, the minimum variance matrix analysis and the cohenrence analysis. The minimum variance analysis gives evidence of linear polarized wave modes. Coherence analysis has shown that the field fluctuations are dominated by the magnetosonic fast modes with periods 15 sec to 15 min. However, it is also shown that some small amplitude Alfven waves are present in the trailing edge of this region with characteristic periods (15-200 sec). The observed wave modes are locally generated and possibly attributed to the scattering of Alfven waves energy into random magnetosonic waves.

Nonlinear laminate analysis for metal matrix fiber composites

A nonlinear laminate analysis is described for predicting the mechanical behavior (stress-strain relationships) of angleplied laminates in which the matrix is strained nonlinearly by both the residual stress and the mechanical load and in which additional nonlinearities are induced due to progressive fiber fractures and ply relative rotations. The nonlinear laminate analysis (NLA) is based on linear composite mechanics and a piece wise linear laminate analysis to handle the nonlinear responses. Results obtained by using this nonlinear analysis on boron fiber/aluminum matrix angleplied laminates agree well with experimental data. The results shown illustrate the in situ ply stress-strain behavior and synergistic strength enhancement.

Expansion and improvements of the FORMA system for response and load analysis. Volume 1: Programming manual

Techniques are presented for the solution of structural dynamic systems on an electronic digital computer using FORMA (FORTRAN Matrix Analysis). FORMA is a library of subroutines coded in FORTRAN 4 for the efficient solution of structural dynamics problems. These subroutines are in the form of building blocks that can be put together to solve a large variety of structural dynamics problems. The obvious advantage of the building block approach is that programming and checkout time are limited to that required for putting the blocks together in the proper order.

Simulation and analyses of the aeroassist flight experiment attitude update method

A method which will be used to update the alignment of the Aeroassist Flight Experiment's Inertial Measuring Unit is simulated and analyzed. This method, the Star Line Maneuver, uses measurements from the Space Shuttle Orbiter star trackers along with an extended Kalman filter to estimate a correction to the attitude quaternion maintained by an Inertial Measuring Unit in the Orbiter's payload bay. This quaternion is corrupted by on-orbit bending of the Orbiter payload bay with respect to the Orbiter navigation base, which is incorporated into the payload quaternion when it is initialized via a direct transfer of the Orbiter attitude state. The method of updating this quaternion is examined through verification of baseline cases and Monte Carlo analysis using a simplified simulation, The simulation uses nominal state dynamics and measurement models from the Kalman filter as its real world models, and is programmed on Microvax minicomputer using Matlab, and interactive matrix analysis tool. Results are presented which confirm and augment previous performance studies, thereby enhancing confidence in the Star Line Maneuver design methodology.

Ray propagation path analysis of acousto-ultrasonic signals in composites

The most important result was the demonstration that acousto-ultrasonic (AU) energy introduced into a laminated graphite/resin propagates by two modes through the structure. The first mode, along the graphite fibers, is the faster. The second mode, through the resin matrix, besides being slower is also more strongly attenuated at the higher frequencies. This demonstration was accomplished by analyzing the time and frequency domain of the composite AU signal and comparing them to the same for a neat resin specimen of the same chemistry and geometry as the composite matrix. Analysis of the fine structure of AU spectra was accomplished by various geometrical strategies. It was shown that the multitude of narrow peaks associated with AU spectra are the effect of the many pulse arrivals in the signal. The shape and distribution of the peaks is mainly determined by the condition of nonnormal reflections of ray paths. A cepstrum analysis was employed which can be useful in detecting characteristic times. Analysis of propagation modes can be accomplished while ignoring the fine structure.
