CAPS PMssa Aerosol Extinction and SSA Data

We collected rapid (1 second time response) measurements of aerosol extinction and scattering (Mm-1) using an Aerodyne CAPS PMssa deployed during LASIC (as part of the LASIC SSA-constraint study) to measure ambient SSA at 530 nm wavelength to compare with other optical measurement methods. Measured from August 4 to September 22, 2017. Sampled from both PM1 and PM10 inlets. CAPS PMssa monitors have been tested extensively for PM2.5 and smaller particle sizes, but not for particles greater than 2,500 nm in diameter (i.e., PM10). The data were collected in order to provide an independent measurement of aerosol single scattering albedo at 530 nm wavelength to compare with ARM standard methods.

Measurement Uncertainty in One-Of-A-Kind Event Data Analysis

A golden standard in science is to repeat an experiment a statistically significant number of times, recording data using the same set of detectors and the same data analysis methodology. In such case experimental error includes both the range of true values generated by repetitions of the experiment, and measurement uncertainty caused by the detector. They are independent. It is a huge and too frequently used simplification, to assume that one can measure multiple repetitions of an identical experiment, resulting in identical true experimental value. Repetitions, as similar is it is experimentally achievable, have unavoidable built-in differences resulting in a range of the true values rather than in a single value. When modern, very sensitive and well calibrated measurement systems are used, this range is not negligible, and sometimes dominates over the measurement uncertainty. Range of true values depends on built-in differences in physics of the experiment. Stochastic physical processes result typically in a broader range of true values than non-stochastic processes do. Measurement uncertainty depends on a measurement method (properties of the detector not of the experiment). Modern measurement methods, including digital ones, frequently make the measurement uncertainty very small. When data from one–of –a kind experiment are analyzed, only the measurement uncertainty is reported. It provides no information about the range of true experimental values, neither about reliability of a reported data point. Reliability of a data point is in general independent from its measurement uncertainty. However, in practice reliable measurement methods frequently have high measurement uncertainty, while low reliability methods are applied to limit measurement uncertainty. Comparison of reliable data with high measurement uncertainty to not so reliable data measured with low uncertainty is discussed – in different scenarios different data analysis methods are applicable. Methods for data analysis from an experiment repeated statistically significant number of times are very well developed. They do not require a detailed expertise in physics of an experiment, nor in the properties of the measurement system used, and meaning of the reported uncertainty is well understood in any scientific community. It all changes when data from one-of-a-kind experiment is analyzed. Analyst’s expertise is required both in the physics of the experiment and in all aspects of the measurement system, all possible malfunctions. Data users must remember that only measurement uncertainty is reported from any one-of-a-kind experiment. Theory with simulations may provide estimation of expected built-in differences in the experiment, and by this of expected range of true values for a given experiment; yet measurement uncertainty can never be used in place of the range of true experimental values.

Passive method to measure strength of turbulence

Disclosed is a method to passively measure and calculate the strength of turbulence via the index of refraction structure constant Cn2 from video imagery gathered by an imaging device, such as a video camera. Processing may occur with any type computing device utilizing a processor executing machine executable code stored on memory. This method significantly simplifies instrumentation requirements, reduces cost, and provides rapid data output. This method combines an angle of arrival methodology, which provides scale factors, with a new spatial/temporal frequency domain method. As part of the development process, video imagery from high speed cameras was collected and analyzed. The data was decimated to video rates such that statistics could be computed and used to confirm that this passive method accurately characterizes the atmospheric turbulence. Cn2 accuracy from this method compared well with scintillometer data through two full orders of magnitude and more capability is expected beyond this verification.

A New Modeling Approach for a Priori Uncertainties of Laser Tracker Angle Measurements

Methods for modeling the uncertainty in laser tracker angle measurements vary within the metrology industry, leading to confusion and questionable stochastic modeling for survey network adjustments and error propagation analysis. Interpreting the published laser tracker manufacturer performance specifications to determine an a priori sigma value for weighting azimuth and zenith angle measurements can be confusing and has led to differing implementations. Furthermore, this paper proposes a unique way to model survey network a priori laser tracker angular uncertainties based on laser tracker manufacturers’ published maximum permissible error (MPE) values referenced to current standards for weighting survey network measurements. This paper’s proposed model takes into account the disparate effects that pointing errors, target centering errors, and leveling errors have on azimuth and zenith angular uncertainties for measurements with steep sightings and at near ranges.

Cell G 7606A Mockup Measurement Analysis Methods and Results

The production of research isotopes at the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC) invariably leads to the accumulation of radioactive waste. Storage of this waste onsite at ORNL serves as an interim solution prior to shipment to long term storage facilities, however onsite capacity is limited. Proper characterization of the activity of waste products is essential for determining the appropriate waste stream and, ultimately, mitigating the cost of disposal. This is typically done via gamma spectrometry and use of the In-Situ Object Counting System (ISOCS), a software package from Mirion that serves as an accepted community standard. However, variability in the contents, density, and activity distribution in waste containers can introduce large errors in ISOCS quantification. A measurement campaign using a mockup of the proposed setup in Cell G seeks to quantify the magnitude and source of these systematic errors. Analysis of this data will guide the creation of ISOCS geometry templates and measurement methods designed to minimize overall uncertainty in reported activities.

TDCOSMO. IX. Systematic comparison between lens modelling software programs: time delay prediction for WGD 2038-4008

The importance of alternative methods for measuring the Hubble constant, such as time-delay cosmography, is highlighted by the recent Hubble tension. It is paramount to thoroughly investigate and rule out systematic biases in all measurement methods before we can accept new physics as the source of this tension. In this study, we perform a check for systematic biases in the lens modelling procedure of time-delay cosmography by comparing independent and blind time-delay predictions of the system WGD 2038-4008 from two teams using two different software programs: GLEE and LENSTRONOMY. The predicted time delays from the two teams incorporate the stellar kinematics of the deflector and the external convergence from line-of-sight structures. The un-blinded time-delay predictions from the two teams agree within 1.2σ, implying that once the time delay is measured the inferred Hubble constant will also be mutually consistent. However, there is a ~4σ discrepancy between the power-law model slope and external shear, which is a significant discrepancy at the level of lens models before the stellar kinematics and the external convergence are incorporated. We identify the difference in the reconstructed point spread function (PSF) to be the source of this discrepancy. When the same reconstructed PSF was used by both teams, we achieved excellent agreement, within ~0.6σ<, indicating that potential systematics stemming from source reconstruction algorithms and investigator choices are well under control. We recommend that future studies supersample the PSF as needed and marginalize over multiple algorithms or realizations for the PSF reconstruction to mitigate the systematics associated with the PSF. A future study will measure the time delays of the system WGD 2038-4008 and infer the Hubble constant based on our mass models.

Benchmark Analysis for the Optical Dilatometry Method Using Silicon Carbide Temperature Monitors

The main objective of this project was to conduct a benchmark analysis for the optical dilatometry method by using NSUF’s SiC temperature monitors: two (2) SiC temperature monitors provided by NSUF’s BSU-8242 experiment and two (2) SiC temperature monitors provided by NSUF’s GE-Hitachi experiment. Per the BSU-8242 experiment, KGT-3597 and KGT-3591 had a design temperature of 400°C and an exposure of 3 dpa. Per the GE-Hitachi experiment, KGT-3341 and KGT-3336 had a design temperature of 290°C +/- 50°C and an exposure of 0.5–1 dpa. The KGT-3336 SiC monitor was split into two pieces during the decontamination process, making the dilatometry method the only way to analyze both those pieces. The BSU-8242 monitors revealed peak irradiation temperatures under the design temperature, and the GE-Hitachi monitors revealed peak irradiation temperatures within the design temperature range. The optical dilatometry method measured the peak irradiation temperature of BSU-8242 KGT-3597 to be 330°C, while the resistivity method measured the peak irradiation temperature of BSU-8242 KGT-3591 to be 320°C +/- 20°C. The optical dilatometry method measured the peak irradiation temperatures of the pieces of GE-Hitachi KGT-3336 to be 260°C (for the larger piece) and 220°C (for the smaller piece), while the resistivity method measured the peak irradiation temperature of GE-Hitachi KGT-3341 to be 300°C, with an accuracy range of -50°C to +20°C. Both methods of SiC temperature monitor analysis produced very similar peak irradiation temperatures for each pair of SiC passive monitors from the two experiments, BSU-8242 and GE-Hitachi. The results show dilatometry method to be a reliable and less time-intensive process for determining irradiation temperatures from passive SiC thermometry.

Secure boot, trusted boot and remote attestation for ARM TrustZone-based IoT Nodes

With the extensive application of IoT techniques, IoT devices have become ubiquitous in daily lives. Meanwhile, attacks against IoT devices have emerged to compromise IoT devices by tampering with system pre-installed programs or injecting new malware. To mitigate these attacks, integrity enforcement of IoT systems has been proposed. The integrity of an IoT device system includes load-time integrity and runtime integrity. In this paper, we design an IoT system based on ARM TrustZone to enforce the system integrity. First, we establish the root of trust and propose a hybrid booting approach consisting of both secure boot and trusted boot to enforce the system load-time integrity. Second, we investigate a paging-based process integrity measurement method to measure the NW processes and conduct remote attestation based on the measurement results ensuring the NW runtime process integrity. We implement an IoT prototype system on a NXP i.MX6Q SABRE SD development board to assess its feasibility. Finally, real-world experiment results demonstrate that our prototype introduces negligible performance overhead to the original system.

Segmentation method comparison for residual fiber length measurement across tiled microscopy images

Fiber length distribution (FLD), in part, governs mechanical properties in discontinuous fiber composites, yet manual measurement methods limit the high-throughput characterization needed for materials design optimization. This study compares deep learning segmentation approaches for automated FLD measurement in large-field microscopy, evaluating how method choice affects the microstructural descriptors used in structure-property-processing relationships. A critical challenge is that high-resolution microscopy images (10,000×10,000 pixels) must be tiled for deep learning analysis, fragmenting fibers at boundaries. We demonstrate that segmentation method proves crucial for measurement accuracy. For example, instance segmentation with Slicing Aided Hyper Inference (SAHI) preserves individual fiber integrity across tiles while semantic segmentation prioritizes speed. Comparing against manual measurement of extracted carbon fibers, YOLOv11-SAHI matched manual ground truth (238 μm weighted mean) with 40x speedup (4.5 vs 167 minutes per image). U-Net provides rapid quantification although it is at the cost of reduced accuracy due only reliably measuring stand-alone fibers. Our comparative analysis reveals that instance segmentation with SAHI better preserves length measurements while semantic segmentation prioritizes speed, providing empirical guidance for method selection. The characterization provides essential inputs for mechanical property prediction models and inverse design workflows, accelerating composite materials development cycles.

X-Ray Fluorescence Microscopy: A Method of Measuring Ion Concentrations in the Ear

This technical note describes synchrotron x-ray fluorescence microscopy (XFM) as a method for measuring the concentrations of various elements in cross-sections of the ear at extremely high resolution. This method could be of great importance for addressing many open questions in hearing research. XFM uses synchrotron radiation to evoke emissions from many biologically relevant elements in the tissue. The intensity and wavelength of the emitted radiation provide a fingerprint of the tissue composition that can be used to measure the concentration of the elements in the sampled location. Here, we focus on energies that target biologically-relevant elements of the periodic table between magnesium and zinc. Since a highly focused x-ray beam is used, the spot size is well below 1 mu m and the samples can be scanned at a nanometer lateral resolution. This study shows that measurement of the concentrations of different elements is possible in a mid-modiolar cross-section of a mouse cochlea. Images are presented that indicate potassium and chloride "hot spots" in the spiral ligament and the spiral limbus, providing experimental evidence for the potassium recycling pathway and showing the cochlear structures involved. Scans of a section obtained from the incus, one of the middle ear ossicles, in a developing mouse have shown that zinc is not uniformly distributed This supports the hypothesis that zinc plays a special role in the process of ossification. Although limited by sophisticated sample preparation and sectioning, the method provides ample exciting opportunities, to understand the role of genetics and epigenetics on hearing mechanisms in ontogeny and phylogeny.

W2VPCA: A Machine Learning Method for Measuring Attitudes With Natural Language

Company strategy influences many decisions in freight transportation. Behavioral models of company decision-making therefore could benefit from including strategy variables. However, strategy is difficult to observe and quantify. Attitudinal surveys of company executives can be used to collect measurements of latent strategy to use in quantitative models. However, surveys are costly and burdensome. Text mining methods to collect measurements overcome these issues somewhat, but typically require manual intervention and ignore the context of words, which can be problematic. This study introduces a new machine learning method to generate strategy measurement data from existing big text data. The new method, called W2VPCA, combines Natural Language Processing and Principal Components Analysis. W2VPCA produces measurement data that serve as quantitative indicators of latent strategy in behavioral models. W2VPCA is unsupervised, data-driven, and uses information on word context. We apply W2VPCA to generate measurements of latent strategies using readily available, large-scale text data: annual company reports. The empirical measurements are used successfully to associate two latent strategies, one focusing on distribution and the other on products, with truck fleet and distribution center outsourcing decisions. The main empirical outcome is that the W2VPCA measurements outperform Bag-of-Words measurements in a psychometric analysis of latent firm strategies. While this study focuses on freight behavioral models, W2VPCA may also have applications in behavioral modeling in other domains.

Methods for Measuring Carbon Dioxide Uptake and Permanence: Review and Implications for Macroalgae Aquaculture

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is gaining recognition as a necessary action in addition to emissions reduction to prevent some of the worst effects of climate change. Macroalgae aquaculture has been identified as a potential CDR strategy and significant research investments have been made in this area. This article reviews current methods for monitoring carbon to assess the potential for application in the context of macroalgae aquaculture as a CDR strategy. In total, 382 papers were included in the review and categorized by carbon uptake methods, carbon permanence methods, and comprehensive frameworks for assessing carbon capture. While methods for measuring carbon uptake are well established, methods to assess the permanence of carbon in the natural life cycle of macroalgae and in products following harvest are lacking. To achieve the full benefit of macroalgae cultivation as a climate solution, monitoring, reporting, and verification standards and improved methods for assessing carbon uptake and permanence need to be developed.

Distributed Fiber Optics Measurements of Rock Deformation and Failure in Triaxial Tests

The implementation of distributed strain measurement methods in triaxial and uniaxial tests have demonstrated the development of strain localization, even at early stages. This implies that single point measurement methods are location dependent. The use of distributed methods is required not only to improve the interpreted constitutive parameters obtained from triaxial tests, but also to understand the implications of strain localization in the failure process. Here, this work uses optical fibers in triaxial tests. The developed distributed measurement method was implemented on granite, gabbro, and sandstone samples and tested under different confining pressures, reaching 200 MPa on the granite sample. Using a temporal resolution of 0.25 Hz and 5 mm of spatial resolution, the strain evolution at over 300 locations at the sample surface was measured during testing. When compared to point sensing methods, the use of optical fiber greatly increases the number of measurements at the surface of the sample, and their interpolation provides the entire deformation of the sample surface. In all the tests performed, strain localizations were revealed before failure. A three-dimensional interpretation of a test, combining an optical scan of the sample and the distributed measurements, show good correlation between the fractures and the strain localization.
